1. M: The temperature’s supposed to be 20 today and go down to 12 this evening.

W: Isn’t that a difference of about 8 degrees?

2. W: Do you have any hobbies?

M: I like to paint.

W: What kind of things do you paint?

M: Mainly rivers and mountains.

3. W: Linda speaks English almost as well as an American.

M: Don’t you know her family lived in the U. S. until she was 12 years old? She’s never forgotten her English.

4. W: You’d better fasten your seat belt, sir. We’ll be coming into land soon.

M: Oh, thank you. Landing is the best part of the flight.

5. M: I still haven’t received a letter. Maybe I’ll never find a god job.

W: Yes. They moved in a couple of weeks ago.

M: What are they like?

W: Well, they’re pretty pushy. They went to borrow everything we own.

M: Hm. You’d better keep them at arm’s length, then.

7. M: Our flight has been delayed for two hours. My partners are waiting for me at London Airport.

W: Where do you come from?

M: Beijing. I was at a two-week conference there on Space Technogy.

W: How interesting! I was there with a tour.

M: Really? Which places did you visit?

W: Apart from Beijing, we went to Nanjing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Hangzhou and Guangzhou.

M: Did you enjoy it?

W: Very much. It was one of the most exciting tours I’ve ever made. Was this your first tirp to China?

M: Oh, no, I go almost every year. Unfortunately, it’s always on space-related business, so I’ve only seen the inside of conference rooms and factories. I haven’t had a chance to visit any touring sites.

W: Oh, that’s a great pity!

8. W: Please, please. Can you help me? Someone stole my camera.

M: Calm down, Madam. Now you said your camera was stolen.

W: Yes. It was a Sony DF Super.

M: Color?

W: Silver Grey.

M: And how much was it worth?

W: I only bought it last week. It cost 500 pounds.

M: Right. Where was it stolen?

W: In the city center, outside Pizza Hut and Hampton Avenue.

M: What time was this?

W: About 2:30.

M: And did you get a look at whoever stole it?

W: It was a young man, maybe around 18, with short dark hair and glasses. He was wearing a red T-shirt.

M: And were there any other people?

W: Lots of people were there. Oh, the ice-cream seller. He was standing on the corner.

M: OK. An ice-cream seller. What’s your name?

W: Mary Smith.

M: Ok, Ms Smith. That’s all we can do now. we’ll phone you if we have any news.

W: Ok, then. Thank you very much.

9. M: Excuse me, are you a college student?

W: Yes, I am. What about you?

M: Me, too. Forgive my asking you, but do you have to take a part-time job in the holidays?

W: Not really. My parents are fairly well off, so I get money from my father.

M: You’re lucky, aren’t you?

W: I think so. What about you? Are your parents wealthy?

M: No, certainly not.

W: Do you work during the holidays?

M: Well, last Christmas I did for two weeks as a postman and a door-to-door salesman. Then in the summer I spent several weeks fruit picking, and I do a bit of baby-sitting.

W: Can you get enough money to finish your education by taking part-time jobs?

M: Of course not. But I’m a top student and I can get a scholarship from the college.

W: Where do you live then?

M: I share a flat with two other boys. It’s not large but fairly tidy, and the most important point is that the rent is quite low.

W: Sounds not bad. Uh, this is my phone number. Call me if you have any problems.

M: Thanks a lot.

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated. He found his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, may I ask you a question?” the man nodded his head. “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”“That’s none of your business.” The man said angrily. “I just want to know. Please tell me!” pleaded the boy. “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.” Hearing that, the boy lowered his head. Then he looked up at this father and said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $10?”

The father got very angry, “If you want to borrow some money just to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, get into your room and go to bed.” The little boy quietly went in. The man sat down, getting angrier. After about an hour, the man had calmed down, thinking: May be there was something he really needed to buy and he really didn’t ask for money very often.

The man went into the little boy’s room “Are you asleep, son?”He asked. “No daddy.”replied the boy. “Sorry, maybe I was too hard on you just now,” said the man, “Here’s the $10 you asked for.”

The boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh, thank you daddy!”Then, from under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled-up bills. On seeing that, the man lost his temper again. “Why do you

want more money if you already have some?” the father cried out.

“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. “Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”
