Here are some of the best fall fairs from New England states.

Connecticut: Durham Fair

Dates: September 22-25

The 98th Annual Durham Fair might not be Connecticut's oldest (that honor goes to the Four Town Fair), but it is the state ' s largest. And it has a special focus on kids, making it well worth the two-hour drive-from Boston. The Durham Fair even has a mini-fairground designed especially for children that features activities like a pedal tractor pull and all sorts of games, plus a stage with little animals and magic shows.

Maine: Fryeburg Fair

Dates: October 2-9

The Fryeburg Fair is the farthest away from Boston. but that doesn ' t stop people from traveling from all over with their kids to experience one of New England ' s finest fall fairs. The fair has some unique spms that celebrate what makes Maine special, like Woodsmen's Field Day with an exciting competition featuring log-rolling, axe-throwing, and tree felling. The fair has all kinds of farm animals, from draft horses to camels.

Massachusetts: Topsfield Fair

Dates: September 30-October 10

Probably the most well-known fair on the list for Bostonians is the Topsfield Fair, which takes place in our backyard. The origins of this fair go back nearly 200 years ago and it's truly a classic fall agricultural fair. Topsfield has everything from the rides for children to many farm animals, like pigs, goats, cows, chickens and rabbits.

New Hampshire: Sandwich Fair

Dates: October 8-10

Two hours north of Boston, you'II find the Sandwich Fair. Saturday at the fair is Children ' s Day, which includes a kid ' s pedal tractor pull and Mo the Clown. Sunday is Family Day, where you ' ll find a miniature horse demo and the Grand Street Parade. While you're at the fair, hike nearby West Rattlesnake or check out some of the other things to do near Lake Winnipesaukee.

On the first day of school, my assignment was to substitute for a kindergarten teacher. Why was I substituting? Mercer County, West Virginia, had hired me two and a half months earlier. Soon after my arrival, I was informed that we had a financial deficit (+~) of two million dollars, which had to be solved by the end of the year. I immediately engaged everyone in brainstorming about how to solve the problem. One idea that we adopted was that administrators ) would be substitute teachers at least one day a month.

The day started to go downhill when the third child stepped into the classroom and started to cry for his' mother. While I turned to comfort him, others arrived and each one seemed to require 110 percent of my attention.

I succeeded in getting 23 of the 28 children to tell me their names so I could give them name tags (4T, . 4-). By the end of the day, only about a dozen name tags were still being worn. That didn ' t seem to matter; most of these little people did not respond to their names anyway. My opening line to the whole group was something crazy like, "Let's all get in a circle." It immediately became obvious that most of these children did not know what a circle was, much less how to get into one. As an alternative, somehow I was able to get all but one girl to sit on the carpet.

As I scrambled to find something productive to do, it occurred to me that I could read to them. Even that did not go smoothly. Children interrupted my reading with their own unrelated stories of whatever popped into their heads, with several children talking at the same time. A few adventurous explorers simply ignored my reading and wandered around the room. I must have looked cross-eyed trying to keep everyone in my sight.

I didn't know how that day ended. But I still remember that when the

day was finally over, I was exhausted.

Our eyes tear up for various reasons. The most common are tears that are continuously being released to keep eyes slightly wet. Then there are reflex (&_~+h+J) tears that are shed (171) when eyes are exposed to things like dust or onion juice. And there are emotional tears pouring out when one is experiencing extreme happiness or sorrow.

While all tears are made up of enzymes, antibodies and oils mixed with salt water, the composition of each kind is unique. In a previous study performed on reflex and emotional tears, scientists discovered that the former contained primarily water while the latter included several chemicals, including one that helps reduce pain.

Thus, it would make sense that the tears consisting of the same chemicals would look identical even under the careful examination of a microscope. However, as Dutch photographer Maurice Mikkers recently discovered, it is not the case.

The photographer, who said he wanted to relate scientific knowledge to the . "real world", began by inviting friends who were willing to shed some tears for him. The volunteers could eat hot peppers, stare at a fan, cut onions or think of something that would cause tears ofjoy or sadness.

Maurice obtained each precious tear with the help of a tiny pipe and put them onto a microscope slide. The photographer'then patiently waited for the tears to crystallize (j/b aag ) before recording them with his camera. The images described beautiful and delicate structures that appeared as fragile as snowflakes (Gl-/). However, that was not the only feature they shared with the snow particles. They were also all unique. The differences can be due to the fact that each tear crystallizes slightly differently, leading to different shapes and formations.

Although Maurice's experiment did not uncover the similarities in the tears.within the same category that he had hoped for, he is enthusiastic about that. He plans to continue obtaining tear images using a higher quality microscope and also dreams about enlisting volunteers that include world leaders. Why? He wants to show that even the most powerful men and women are just like the rest of us – humanl!

It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?”I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”
