Every autumn, as families across the United States get ready to send their kids to college, the economics of higher education receive renewed attention. College is expensive and becoming more so in the U. S. The situation raises two questions: Why does it cost so much, and how can students and their families afford it?

Several studies published in the past few weeks reflect on these questions. The findings provide comfort to poor families.

First, it appears that only the minority actually pay the "high price". A study by the

US Education Department's National Center for Education Statistics found that 55 percent of college students last year received some forms of help--scholarships, loans(贷款)or jobs.

Other factors are also at work. The government has increased the size of its grants (补助金)to lower-income students. Grants, unlike loans, don't have to he repaid and are awarded only to college students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree.

At the same time, most colleges are spending more on undergraduate education than they are collecting in tuition fees. A study, which is part of the Williams College Project on the Economics of Higher Education, reaches the conclusion that on average colleges “subsidize (赞助)”their students. The results of these studies, however, leave unanswered the questions of whether educational costs are higher than they need to be. Some experts argue that much of the college cost results from educational competition for fame, students and facilities.

This puts upward pressure on tuition, hut many colleges feel that good fame will enable them to attract students even if they charge them more.

Therefore, until something important changes in the marketplace, costs seem likely to continue rising. And American families will continue to beat down the doors of the high price "college in the end.

41. From the fourth paragraph of the passage we can conclude that _____.

A.American families earn only a little money every year

B.American families pay little attention to education

C.American students often have to stop their studies

A.to find a good job and make money

B.to borrow money from the banks

C.to ask for grants

D.to borrow money from friends

43. It can be inferred that in America _______.

A.famous colleges only accept rich students.

B.famous colleges charge their students more money

C.the government spends little money on education

D.families often break the doors of colleges

44. The writer of this passage seems to hold the opinion that _______.

A.college fees rise too fast for poor families.

B.poor people should borrow money from banks

C.poor people don’t need to send their children to college

D.colleges should get more money to improve themselves

B

The age of gilded youth is over. Today's under-thirties are the first generation for a century who can expect a lower living standard than their parents.

When they leave work late in the evening they will be more likely to return to a small rented flat than to a house of their own. When, eventually, they retire it will be on pensions far lower in real terms than those of their immediate forebears.

The findings are revealed in a study of the way the ageing of Britain's population is affecting different generations.

Anthea Tinker, professor of social gerontology(老人医院) at King's College London, who carried out much of the work, said the growth of the proportion(比例)of people over 50 had reversed the traditional flow of wealth from older to younger generations.

"Today's older middle-aged and elderly are becoming the new winners," she said."They made relatively small contributions in tax but now make relatively big claims on the welfare system. Generations born in the last three to four decades face the prospect(n.前途,前景) of handing over more than a third of their lifetime's earnings to care for them"。

The surging(急剧膨胀)number of older people, many living alone, has also increased demand for property and pushed up house prices. While previous generations found it easy to raise a mortgage, today's under-thirties have to live with their parents or rent. If they can afford to buy a home it is more likely to be a flat than a house.

Laura Lenox-Conyngham, 28, grew up in a large house and her mother did not need to work. Unlike her wealthy parents, she graduated with student and postgraduate loan debts of £13, 000. She now earns about £20,000 a year, preparing food to be photographed for magazines. Her home is a one-bedroom flat in central London and she sublets the lounge sofa-bed to her brother.

"My father took pity and paid off my student debts," she said."But I still have no pension and no chance of buying a property for at least a couple of years—and then it will be something small in a bad area.My only hope is the traditional one of meeting a rich man."

Tinker's research reveals Lenox-Conyngham is representative of many young professionals, especially in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol.

45.Why are today's older middle-aged and elderly becoming the new winners?

A.Because they made relatively small contributions in tax, but younger generation will possibly hand over more than a third of their lifetime's earnings for the care of them.

B.Because they contributed a lot in tax and now can claim much on the welfare system.

C.Because they made small contributions, but now can make money easily.

D.Because they outnumber younger generation and enjoy more privileges in the present

society.

46.Which factor pushed up house prices?

A.Many young men, who live alone, have increased demand for houses.

B.Many young men need to rent more houses.

C.It is easy to apply for a mortgage for young generation.

D.The number of older people, many of whom live alone, becomes bigger and bigger.

47. In what way does Laura Lenox-Conyngham make her living?

A.By taking photographs for magazines.

B.By marrying a rich man.

C.By subletting the lounge sofa-bed to her brother.

D.By preparing food for photographs for some magazines.

48. We can conclude from the passage that _______ .

A.today's under-thirties are leading a miserable life in Britain

B.Laura Lenox-Conyngham's attitude to work and life represents that of many young professionals in Britain

C.life can get harder for under-thirties in Britain

D.elders enjoy extremely high living standard in Britain

The period of engagement is the time between the marriage proposal and the wedding ceremony. Two people agree to marry when they decide to spend their lives together.

The man usually gives the woman a diamond engagement ring? That tradition is said to have started when an Austrian man gave a diamond ring to the woman he wanted to marry. The diamond represented beauty. He placed it on the third finger of her left hand.He chose that finger because it was thought that a blood vessel in that finger went directly to the heart. Today, we know that this is not true. Y et the tradition continues.

Americans generally are engaged for a period of about one year if they are planning a wedding ceremony and party. During the time, friends of the bride may hold a party at which women friends and family members give the bride gifts that she will need as a wife. These could include cooking equipment or new clothing.

Friends of the man who is getting married may have a bachelor party for him. This usually takes place the night before the wedding. Only men are invited to the bachelor party.

During the marriage ceremony, the bride and her would-be husband usually exchange gold rings that represent the idea that their union will continue forever. The wife often wears both the wedding ring and engagement ring on the same finger. The

husband wears his ring on the third finger of his left hand.

Many people say the purpose of the engagement period is to permit enough time to plan the wedding .But the main purpose is to let enough time pass so the two people are sure they want to marry each other. Either person may decide to break the engagement. If this happens, the woman usually returns the ring to the man; they also return any wedding gifts they have received.

49. What was the diamond ring said to represent?

A.Beauty. B.Loyalty.l3% C.Luck. D.Durability.

50. Why did the Austrian man place the diamond ring on the third finger of the left hand of his would-be wife?

A.He wanted to follow the tradition of his country.

B.He believed that it symbolized an everlasting marriage.

C.It was through that a blood vessel in that finger led directly to the heart.

D.It was supposed that the diamond on that finger would bring good luck.

51. What is the chief advantage of having the engagement period?

A.The two people can learn about each other’s likes and dislikes.

B.The two people can have time to decide if they are a good match.

C.The two people can have time to shop for their new home.

D.The two people can earn enough money for their wedding.

Hong Kong, major commercial center for Asia, and with a population which has grown at an alarming rate to over 5 million, is a city highly dependent on mass (大量的, 大规模的) transit of all sorts, both local and long distance. An ordinary Hong Kong worker or businessman, going about his daily activities, simply must use transportation at one time or another.

Because Hong Kong is in two parts, Kowloon, on the mainland side, and Hong Kong, the island, with Hong Kong's harbor in between Hong Kong's mass transit systems, in addition to going over land they must also cross water.

Going from home to work, or going shopping from one side of the harbor to the other, the Hong Kong resident has three choices. One way is to take a bus which will cross the harbor through an under water traffic tunnel moving slowly through bumper- to-bumper (一辆接一辆) traffic.Another way is by ferry boat , a pleasant ride which crosses the harbor in from seven to fifteen minutes.

But by far the fastest way of crossing the harbor is the newly built underground electric railway, the Hong Kong Metro(地铁). If one gets on the train in the Central

District, the commercial area of Hong Kong on the island side, he can speed across the harbor in an astonishing three minutes. On the other side of the harbor the railway continues, snaking back and forth through the outlying districts of Kowloon, allowing one to get off a short distance from his destination.

The story of the Metro is an encouraging one for supporters of mass transit. Although building the system was certainly a challenging task, the Japanese firm hired to construct it did so in record time. Construction got underway in 1979 and it was completed in 1980.

For the average commuter (一般持月票往返两地的乘客) the system has only one disadvantage; it is more expensive than by bus or ferry. One can ride the bus across the harbor for half as much or he can ride the ferry across for less than one-fifth as much. 52. Hong Kong public transportation extends ________.

A.over hills and valleys B.across land and water

C.through mountains D.throughout the Kowloon area

53. Crossing the harbor by train is ________.

A.by far the most economical methods B.the most pleasant method

C.the least pleasant method D.the fastest method

54. The business area on the island side of Hong Kong is referred to as ________.

A.Kowloon B.the Central District

C.the Hong Kong Metro D.downtown Hong Kong

55. The underground railway ________.

A.winds through Kowloon B.ends when it reaches Kowloon

C.snakes across the harbor D.circles Kowloon

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only abut one in two hundred is affected in this manner. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman.

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything the shades of green --- a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these ar e used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also

have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

56. According to the passage, with the help of the cones, we can_______.

A. tell different shapes

B. see in a weak light

C. kill mosquitoes

D. tell orange from yellow

57. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by a woman?

A. Women are more careful.

B. There are fewer color-blind women.

C. Women are fonder of driving than men.

D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.

58. Which of the following statements about the color-blind is true?

A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing colors.

B. None of them can see deep red.

C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

D. All of them see everything in shades of green.

59. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a ______.

A. red light

B. yellow light

C. blue light

D. green light .

[1]One out of many important things for the whole family to do is to have dinner together. Researchers began reporting the benefits of family dinner about a decade ago, focusing mainly on how it affects children. Studies show that those families who eat dinner at least 3 or 4 times a week together, benefit in many ways.

[2]Eating together helps families achieve open communication and build stronger and healthier relationships. Children have better grades at school and are better adjusted as teens and adults, and the entire family enjoys healthier nutrition. For many families, eating dinner together proves to be good and effective way to reduce the risk of youth rates of addiction, and helps to raise healthier children. It is also a great time to share the events of the day, discuss news and ideas and just be together and enjoy each other's company.

[3]During dinner time parents have better opportunity to show that they are the prior to their children. Sitting at the same table and sharing meals is where and when parents can find out more about their children's school performance, daily activities and attitudes toward life. When parents have all this information they can better direct their kids toward positive things in life. They also have better chance to reduce the possibility that children will get involved with alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs.

[4]However, family researchers say that the benefits of family dinner by no means can be considered as automatic. Parents can sit down to dinner with their kids every day

and achieve nothing. _______________ if there is too much arguing going on, if there is no meaningful conversation or, what is even worse, if there is just plain silence during gathering.

【书面表达答案】

Failure is the Mother of Success

In one way of thinking, failure is what often happens. For some objective or subjective reasons, we often have to face failure in a complex society. No one can avoid failure in one or another aspect of daily life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. It makes us think a lot. We learn the lessons and accumulate the experience, and then we try to get access to the possible solution. Failure can become treasures. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed

before he found the right way to make one.

In my opinion, failure isn’t always a bad thing. We will ha ve a more realistic view about ourselves and the world around us. As people often say, failure is the mother of success. A temporary loser does not necessarily mean a permanent loser. Grasping opportunity, everyone can succeed with his or her efforts.
