Lying on my stomach with my camera in front of me, I’ve been watching a nearby stream for hours, waiting.

Yes! A 380-pound lioness steps from the trees and heads toward the stream. She crouches down to drink. She’s close to me—no more than 50 yards away. She stands up and begins to walk toward me, not knowing I’m there.

When she is just about 20 yards away, I move my camera slightly. I don’t want to shock or panic her. She freezes for a moment, and continues toward me—which was not really the reaction I wanted!

If I stand up and yell, will she leave? Maybe, maybe not. If I stand up and run, will she chase me? Probably. So I decide to stay put.

Surprisingly, she lies down, posing like a statue in front of me. This makes me feel very small and humble. Then she rolls over and looks at me upside down! She seems a little puzzled and appears to be trying to figure me out—Hmm, are you edible? You don’t look dangerous. I think you’re OK.

Breathe slowly, I remind myself, even though my heart is pounding. I carefully back up my tripod just a bit to where I can focus and shoot the picture.

Suddenly—so fast that it startles me—she leaps up. In a flash, she b ounds away. I’m left overwhelmed with emotion—the encounter felt like a gift from the forest. Getting this photograph took a long time. I spent two years waiting for a permit to track the extremely rare Asiatic lions in the Gir Forest of India. Then I spent three months on foot searching for them. There are only about 300 of these endangered lions left.

Perhaps all the waiting in the forest gave the lioness time to get used to me. I tried not to intrude on her life. My reward? A moment I’ll never forget.

24.Which of the following can best describe the feeling of the author when the lioness comes

near?

A. Relaxed and calm.

B. Bored and puzzled.

C. Anxious but proud.

D. Frightened but excited.

25. When the lioness discovers the author, she ________.

A. poses for a picture.

B. stays and then goes away.

C. tries to attack him.

D. recognizes the author.

26. Which of the following about Wilson is true according to the passage?

A. The author used to live in the forest.

B. It was illegal to take photos of the lioness.

C. The author made great efforts to shoot the lions.

D. The lioness said hello to the author in a special way.

27. What do you think is the purpose of the writing?

A. To share an experience with the readers.

B. To tell readers of the dangers in the forest.

C. To introduce a kind lioness.

D. To congratulate himself on his narrow escape.

C

As the cost of attending university has soared over the last two decades, a frank and vigorous debate is emerging over who should pay for the cost of higher education. I am proud to be in the small minority of students who “earn as they learn” and absorb the cost of their own university education in spite of the many obstacles.

As for the remaining majority, collectively, they claim that they have no capacity to pay for college. I think it’s more a matter of them simply not wanting to pay or contribute. During college I consistently endured comments from peers with scholarships and loans, and peers who had new cars and expensive apartments, who would ask me, eyes bulging, “Y ou mean your parents didn’t help you at all?”“How did you pay for tuition?”My response was simple: “I worked.”They would look at me blankly, as though I had told them I’d gone to the moon.

Sometimes, I did feel a little sorry for myself, especially when I compared myself to wealthy students. I once asked another student if she worked. “Oh, no!” she said, startled. “I go to school full-time.” She was only taking 13 credit hours, and yet was “too busy” to work. She went on to explain that her parents paid for everything and provided her with every necessity, and many luxuries too!

Truthfully, I was a little envious of her easy life as I took 18 credit hours so that I could graduate within four years. Besides, I was working 25 hours a week so I could pay tuition without future loan debt. And here’s something amazing: I pulled through A’s and was at the top of my class!

I am particularly proud that, in choosing this path of self-support, I have relieved my parents of the burden of my university education. Furthermore, by taking care of myself, without their assistance, I have given them the satisfaction of knowing that they successfully completed the task of raising me into adulthood.

28. What does the underlined word “startled” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. envious

B. admiring

C. surprised

D. sorry

29. What does the author want to show with the example of the girl student from a wealthy family?

A. He was envious of the girl’s easy life.

B. Working part-time may help one prioritize their tasks.

C. Working part-time may help one get all A’s in their study.

D. He was sorry that his own parents were not rich.

30. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph?

A. To criticize those who do not work part-time at college.

B. To complain about the hardship of working while studying.

C. To call on other students to work part-time while studying.

D. To argue that the “earn-as-you-learn” approach is a sure way to happiness.

31. Which of the following might serve as the title of this passage?

A. How to win scholarships?

B. Do you support yourself?

C. Earn as you learn?

D. Who should pay for tuition?

D

Prehistoric people may have hunted and killed other members of their own species and eaten them, but probably not for food. That is what a new study written by James Cole of the University of Brighton in England says.

Cole studied nine places where fossils have been found and where researchers have found evidence of cannibalism(同类相食). Such signs include cutting marks on the bones. Five of the sites had Neanderthal fossils, the remains of earlier human ancestors. Two sites had fossils of prehistoric members of our own species and the others had fossils from much earlier human ancestors.

Cole estimated how many calories each of the bodies at each site had. He used earlier studies that found eating an average-sized modern-day human could provide up to 144,000 calories. He then made his estimates, based on the ages of the bodies at the sites. The researcher found that the hunters would not get as much energy from the humans as they would from one large animal -- like a mammoth, a woolly rhino or a bear. So, Cole asked, why would the early humans hunt and kill their own species?

"You're dealing with an animal that is as smart as you are, as resourceful as you are, and can fight back in the way you fight them," Cole noted. He says our ancestors may have eaten members of their species who had died because they did not have to be hunted. But he says cannibalism probably took place for reasons other than the need for food. He said it could have happened after times of violence or to defend territory.

In an email, Paola Villa of the University of Colorado Museum in Boulder said the new study "does not change our general understanding of human cannibalism." But Palmira Saladie, of the

Catalan Institute for Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution, said Cole's study "will undoubtedly be key in the interpretation of new sites (and) the reevaluation of old interpretations."

In an email, she wrote that, to understand why our ancestors sometimes ate each other, "we still have a long way to go."

32.From Paragraph 2, we can know that _________.

A. evidence that our own species ate each other can be found in all the nine places.

B. more sites had fossils from earlier human ancestors than from our own species.

C. Cole found enough evidence from the sites that had Neanderthal fossils.

D. The nine places were initially discovered by Cole before he did this research.

33.Which might be the reason why prehistoric people ate each other?

A. Flesh from human bodies is as nutritious as any large animals.

B. When they fought, our ancestors ate their enemies to defend themselves.

C. Compared to animals, killing the members of their species would be easier for our ancestors.

D. Food problem might be the major reason for cannibalism.

34. Cole conducted his research into cannibalism mainly by means of __________.

A. Consultation.

B. Experiments.

C. Assumption.

D. Comparison.

35. Which word can best describe Cole’s new study according to the passage?

A. Revolutionary.

B. Unimportant.

C. Believable.

D. Mistaken.
