阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Greeting Gesture —Bowing is the traditional form for both greeting and departing. Western and Korean male friends usually greet with both a slight bow and shaking hands. When shaking hands, both hands are sometimes used. Women usually do not shake hands, especially with men, but usually just nod lightly. The senior person offers to shake hands first, but the junior person bows first.

Avoid hugging and kissing when greeting. Long direct eye contact is considered impolite. When saying good-bye, the traditional gesture is the bow.

Touching Gestures

Generally speaking, the Koreans are not a touching society. So avoid touching or any long form of body contact.

You seldom see public display of affection. On the other hand, you may note people of the same sex walking hand-in-hand, which is simply a gesture of friendship. Don't worry about a bit of pushing in stores or when groups board public buses or trains. Apologies are neither offered nor expected.

Beckoning Gestures

The open hand or the middle finger is used for pointing: To beckon (招手) someone, the palm (手掌) faces downward and the fingers are moved. Using the arm and hand up, with palm toward the face, is used only for calling dogs or children.

Other Gestures

Respect is always shown to elderly people, so it is common to stand up when a person, especially an elderly man enters the room. However, an elder may not give up a seat for a young boy. Men generally have priority (特权) in Korea: go through a door first, walk ahead of women, and women may help them with their coats.

Chuck McCarthy, a young actor from Los Angeles, was in need of a second job to pay his bills. Then he thought of a way to supplement his income. He became a people walker. At first, Chuck McCarthy considered becoming a dog walker to earn some extra cash, but soon he realized that the job required more than walking dogs on a leash (链条). However, walking people didn't require much when they were out on walks. Chuck realized there was money to be made if he walked people around Los Angeles instead.

It might sound like a joke, but the People Walker, as he calls himself, is very serious about his new job. For $7 per mile, he offers to walk with his clients (客户) around Los Angeles. He listens to their problems and encourages them, or simply makes conversation. Sometimes, he just offers them a sense of security (安全). Chuck doesn't look like the kind of guy you'd want to be angry with.

Chuck's services are aimed at people who don't feel safe when walking alone in some areas, and those who are afraid that people might see them walking by themselves and think that they have no friends. “I wear my The People Walker shirt upon request,” McCarthy says. However, he admits some people are a bit uncomfortable with this policy, as they don't necessarily want everyone to know that they're being walked.

So far, Chuck McCarthy has already had another five people walkers employed. They work in areas, like downtown L.A., Hollywood, Eagle Rock, or Fairfax. Once he posted signs around the city, his phone started ringing and more requests were coming. While he hopes that his acting career

will pick up soon, in the meantime Chuck is very happy with his people walking business.

Why do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity? Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.

The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的) than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough time.

Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous have no impact on whether study participants are likely to live longer. Those who are more self-disciplined, for instance, are no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas have no relationship with long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.

Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.

Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother's personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we're adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.

Personality isn't destiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn't just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.

Most of us line up a large number of times during our lives. Think about it. Banks. Restaurants. Doctors. Waiting lines are such a thorn in our sides at popular destinations (目的地) —Disney World, the Empire State Building — that many of us are willing to pay to avoid lines.

Culture has much to do with how we handle waiting lines. The British are the best people in the world at waiting in lines. I've never seen a people less concerned with lines than the British.

If you've been to Wimbledon you know what I mean. There are no online ticket sales for this fortnight of tennis. You queue up for hours, often a halfday or more with 8,000 others on a golf course near the stadium, suffering whatever rain, wind or sun.

It is an unwritten but ever present rule at Wimbledon that you never talk about or even admit that the queue exists. You'll hear and participate in every conversation imaginable while waiting. It's not really possible to jump or break-in a queue at Wimbledon because of the stewards and the time-dated stamps they hand out, but it's considered bad behavior anywhere by the British.

Some places such as restaurants in Canada and in the States are getting wise. The host or

hostess greets you, and says almost apologetically (道歉地). “Sorry, but it will be about 45 minutes!”Almost always you'll be seated in just 20 to 30 minutes. It's called managing_expectations. But, now you're very happy as if you had something to do with getting a table earlier.

Finally, technology promises to save some queuing time. In the years ahead, stores will adopt Apple's methods, with every salesperson capable of taking payments. Then the lines will disappear.

With age, perhaps, comes wisdom. I do whatever I can to avoid activities where queues are quite common. But you can't always avoid lines, so I make the best of them. I usually start conversations with total strangers in a queue ... at the very least you open yourself up to an opportunity for an engaging conversation. Queues, like life, have a lot to do with attitudes.

语篇解读:本文是议论文。作者在文中叙述了个别国家对于“排队等候”的态度,并表明了自己对此的观点和态度。

12.Why does the author say that waiting lines are a thorn in our sides?

A.Lining up makes us hurt.

B.We have to pay to avoid lines.

C.We spend most of our life queuing.

D.Waiting lines are unavoidable in our life.

13.While queuing in Wimbledon, ________.

A.you will be fined if you break in

B.everybody is used to waiting long

C.people prove the existence of queues

D.the waiting time depends on the weather

解析:选B推理判断题。由第二段和第四段“It is an unwritten but ever present rule at Wimbledon that you never talk about or even admit that the queue exists”可知,在Wimbledon,甚至人们都看不到“队伍”的存在,这里的人们都已经习惯了排队等候。

14.What does the underlined part “managing expectations” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Reducing waiting times at queue lines.

B.Having high expectations for customers.

C.Trying to live up to customers' expectations.

D.Letting customers wait shorter than they expected.

解析:选D词义猜测题。由第五段可知,在加拿大和美国的一些餐馆,服务生会告诉人们一个比实际等待时间要长的时间,这样顾客会早于他们期待的时间落座,这被称为“管理期待”。

15.What is the author's attitude towards lines?

A.Annoyed.B.Unclear.

C.Positive. D.Indifferent.

Are you expecting better results in your life? Do you want to achieve more in your career and relationships? __16__ Here I'd like to share something you should change in your life to get what you want.

Change your priorities (优先顺序).

This is important if you want to live a balanced life. Many people are successful in their career but don't have good relationships with their companions or families because of wrong priorities. They put things like money and reputation above their relationships. Don't let it happen to you. __17__

Change your motivation.

Motivation is the reason why we do things. __18__ You can significantly change the way you do things simply by changing your motivation.

The way to change your motivation is to upgrade your motivation to higher levels. For example, if your motivation to work is money, you can upgrade it to helping others.

Change your habits.

Is there any bad habit that holds you back? __19__ For instance, perhaps you have the habit of rising late. But — since many people agree that early morning is the most productive time — that means that you lose the most productive time of the day. You can get better results simply by replacing the old habit with a new habit of rising early.

__20__

Your inputs determine your outputs. There is no way you can get high-quality outputs if you feed your mind with low-quality inputs. So watch your inputs carefully. What programs do you watch on TV? What books, magazines, or blogs do you read? Get rid of the low-quality inputs and replace them with high-quality ones.

A.Change your inputs.

B.Change your outputs.

C.It gives us the power to move and work.

D.If so, we must change the way we do things.

17.选E根据“Change your priorities(优先顺序).”标题中的priorities和这一标题下内容的中心词relationships及设空前的“They put things like money and reputation above their relationships. Don't let it happen to you.”可知,本段建议改变你的优先顺序,不要让金钱和名誉之类的事情凌驾于与家人和朋友的关系之上,故E项符合语境。

18.选C根据“Change your motivation.”标题中的motivation可知,这一标题下的内容强调内在动力,故C项“它赋予你前进和工作的力量”符合语境。

19.选F根据小标题“Change your habits.”及设空前的“Is there any bad habit that holds you back?”可知,这一标题下的内容强调坏习惯的改正,由此可知,F项符合语境,“If the answer is yes”恰好回答了前句的问题。

20.选A本空为最后一段的小标题,观察前面的小标题格式可知,A、B两项符合;根据本段中的“So watch your inputs carefully.”及“Get rid of the low-quality inputs and replace them with high-quality ones.”可知,本段强调的是inputs,故选A项。

Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow. Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful. Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what’s more, I am able to better understand the author’s ideas. In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.

人教版新课标高中英语选修7课文原文

人教版新课标高中英语选修7课文原文 Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as

A Couch Potato Forty-three-year-old Brian Blakey from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day. When I wake up I don't get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children's programmes and old movies until about half-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film – they're showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o'clock. At nine thirty, if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch off the TV at about two o'clock. I never watch TV all night. I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don't go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks round in a circle. Of course, I couldn't live this lifestyle without a good wife. She's not here now because she's working, but she always makes my meals. We haven't got much money, you know, but we're happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here's the remote control. You've got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great! A Workaholic Thirty-six-year-old Bob Black is sitting at his desk and working his way through his paperwork. I normally wake up about five minutes before my alarm clock goes off. As soon as I hear my alarm clock, I jump out of my bed. It takes me less than fifteen minutes to wash, get changed, have breakfast, leave home and get on a bus. I am always the first person to get to the office. The mornings are always very busy and the afternoons are even busier! Meetings and phone calls take up a large part of the day. Every minute

语篇提能 阅读理解 A Lobsters (龙虾) can be found throughout the world's oceans, with the exception of the north and south polar regions. Different types of lobster choose different areas to live. Many lobsters live in shallow water in the coastal areas around islands. One group of lobsters, called deep-sea lobsters, lives in the cold, deep sea. When it comes to predators (捕食者), humans have to be placed first on the list thanks to a multi-billion dollar fishing industry. In the oceans lobsters face threats from a range of fish and sea mammals. Atlantic Cod Atlantic cod are found throughout the Atlantic Ocean at depths of between 200 and 440 feet. Small cod are primarily bottom feeders. Fully-grown cod will eat pretty much anything they can swallow whole including lobsters. Summer Flounder The summer flounder is a flat fish. What is unique about the fish is that both its eyes are on one side of its body. They stay close to the sea beds in the Atlantic waters off the coast of North America. They are effective predators that search for food on the sea floor. The flounder has sharp teeth capable of crushing (粉碎) small lobsters. Harbor Seals Found in Arctic and sub-arctic waters in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the harbor seals rest on sandy beaches and take to the water to hunt. Seals have a varied diet, eating a range of fish. They also eat lobsters. Wolffish The wolffish is found in coastal waters on both sides of the North
