He said he had been standing in the wind all the morning.

Before I worked in the factory, I had been working as a secretary in the local government.

"The man had been visiting your office several times before you arrived," Tom said to me.

She told me that she had been writing letters since breakfast.

I never thought he had been doing that kind of thing to you.

The Greens were watching a football match on TV.

The Greens watched a football match on TV last night.

I have been fixing the bridge all this morning.

I have fixed the fridge.

Where is he working at present?

Where does he work?

We were working from two to four yesterday afternoon.

We work in that factory.

1. The crazy fans __ __ patiently for two hours, and they would wait till the movie star arrived.

A. were waiting

B. had been waiting

C. had waited

D. would wait

根据所提供的情景“and they would wait till the movie star arrived”表明动作还会持续下去,所以要用过去完成进行时。

例2. He ___ __ photos along the lake before he saw a boy fall into the water.

A. had been taking

B. have been taking

C. had taken

D. have taken

答案:A。

例3.Tom __ __ in the library every night over the last three months.

A.works

B.worked

C.has been working

D.had been working

根据时间状语over the last three months可知,本句用现在完成进行时。

On Monday mornings it usually __ __ me an hour to drive to work although the actual distance is only 20 miles.

A.takes

B.is taking

C.took

D.will take

Since the time humankind started gardening, we __ __ to make our environment more beautiful.

A. try

B. have been trying

C. are trying

D. will try

The problem might be worse than we expect. Maybe we don’t lik e ourselves without realizing it. Here is a simple checklist: Is there anything you don’t like about yourself from these lists?

Your past: Maybe you have made mistakes in the past which you feel bad about. 2 . Even if that happened in distant past, your subconscious mind still has a reason not to like yourself.

Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about whether it is necessary for middle school students to bring mobile phones to school.

The majority of the students think that it is more convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and classmates if they have mobile phones. What’s more,it’s fashionabl e now. However, most teachers think that middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. It is a waste of time for students to play games and send text messages to each other using mobile phones. It can also cause the students to envy with each. If they need to make a call, they can use public phones on the campus.

In my opinion, following a fashion trend is understandable, but as middle school students, we should throw ourselves heart and soul into studies.

Yours truly,

Li Ming

Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow. Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful. Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what’s more, I am able to better understand the author’s ideas. In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.

6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance(15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually replaced those held in the Middle Ages. People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism(late 19h to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal, from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris. The Impressionists were the first painters to work outdoors. They were eager to show how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of day. However, because natural light changes so quickly, the Impressionists had to paint quickly. Their paintings were not as detailed as those of earlier painters. At first, many people disliked this style of painting and became very angry about it. They said that the painters were careless and their paintings were ridiculous. Modern Art(29th century to today) At the time they were created, the Impressionist paintings were controversial, but today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call "modern art". This is because the
