Active Listening & Speaking I Script: Hi, my name is Rebecca Darnell, workforce service specialist with Contra Costa County, and today we’re going to discuss how to choose a career based on your personality. The first step is to really understand yourself and your own personality. Sometimes that’s easier said than done. There are a lot of different tools that you can utilize in order to really get a clear view or picture of your personality and your personality traits. A lot of times, our own self-assessments are not always as accurate as we think they are, so it’s important to get a clear picture of what types of things best describe you and your personality traits. They may be as simple as being an extrovert, which means that you are very social and enjoy being around people, versus an introvert, which would mean that you prefer to be more to yourself and in solitary situations. These types of personality traits are extremely important in determining what kind of career would be best for you because to be successful, you need to really be comfortable with yourself in the type of work that you’re doing. So just for an example, if you were to take a personality test and it determined that you are an extrovert, then it would be a good idea for you to look at jobs or different employment opportunities in social settings, potentially retail, or if you are to be a clerk or in a different job environment that allows you to interact with people and work in a team environment, and actually have a partnership with people where your work combined with theirs to make an end product. If that’s not something that you feel comfortable with, then you would want to explore other types of work. Possibly if you’re more of an introvert, you would maybe look at something along the lines of truck driving where you spend most of your time alone and you rely solely on your own skills and your own time frames and you really set your own schedule. So it’s important to take a look at how you fit into the job that you’re interested in because the happier you are and the better it fits with you, the more success you will have in your job search and in finding a job that’s going to make you happy. Notes 1. end product: 最终产品,制成品 2. time frame: 时间范围,期限 3. fit into: 适应 4. Bush left the White House in 2009, he largely left the spotlight. However last year he worked alongside volunteers in Zambia to renovate a clinic that specializes in treating cervical cancer. Like other former presidents, Mr. Bush uses his fame to draw attention to issues, but says he prefers not to call attention to his own work.

Be as specific as you can when you complain ,make a request ,or offer praise. 3. When stressed by fatigue or your own insecurities ,imagine you and your partner in a foxhole ,surrounded by danger.Instead of striking out at your partner ,find a way to protect the partnership! 4. When you feel "distant ," talk about it with your partner. 5. Be assured that partners in all marriages sometimes get tired, irritable ,or distracted. Work together to understand each other. 6. Respect each other.Leave if danger exists. Find professional help if physical ,sexual ,emotional ,or verbal abuse occurs. 7. Fight to "understand ," not to "win. But inmarriage ,success resides more in "lose-lose" solutions. Out of these ,both parties can win. For in the love configuration ,losing gives a gift that always returns. The issues that people argue over most in marriage ,such as how to spend money ,often aren't the real ones. The key issue is: who is going to be in control? When I was younger,my need to control arose out of fear,a lack of trust ,insecurity. The day I finally realized I needn't to control my wife-that ,indeed ,I ought not to control her ,that I couldn't control her ,and that if I try to ,I would destroy our marriage - was the day our marriage began. What is it we want most from a marriage? To love and be loved. To be happy and secure .To grow to discover A love relationship is the garden in which we plant ,cultivate and harvest the most precious of crops ,our own self, and in which our spouse is provided the same rich soil in which to bloom. We cannot obtain what we want unless our partner also gets what he or she wants. So remember: if you want to feel loved and respected ,give up control. LECTURE AUDIOSCRIPTS UNIT 1 What’s in a Name? TEACHER: Good morning, everybody. Good morning, Felipe, Monica, Theo, and I can't remember your name. STUDENT 1: Patricia. TEACHER: Patricia, right, Patricia. Those are all beautiful names, and that's our topic today-names. Names are a culture universal. This means everyone uses names. A person's name can tell us a bit about a person's family. Today, we’ll begin by looking at first names and how people choose names for their children. And then we'll talk about family names, and look at the different categories of family names. Although the scope of the lecture today is English-language names, we can use the same approach, you know, to look at names from any culture. Let's take a brief look at first, or given names. There are several ways parents choose the first name for their child. The first way is by family history. Parents may choose a name because it is passed from generation to generation; for example, the first born son might be named after his father or grandfather. Although family names are also passed to daughters, it is usually as a middle name. Adding "junior" or "the second" for example, William Parker the se conds only done with boys', not with girls’names. The second way parents choose a name is after a family member or friend who has died recently, or after someone "they admire, like a well-known leader or a famous musician. Although most English first names mean something, for example, "Richard" means powerful and “Ann" means grace, nowadays meaning is not the main reason people select their baby's name. The third way is to provide a "push" for the child. Parents want to choose a name that sounds very "successful." A strong name might help them in the business world, for example. Or they might choose a name that works for either gender, like Taylor or Terry. So, given these three methods, what is the

Outside view Julie My name's Julie Dearden, and I'm the Director of International Programmes here at Hertford College. Eugene My name's Eugene Berger, I studied here in Oxford for four years er, studying modern languages at Somerville College. Julie Oh, there are many Oxford traditions. Oxford is a very old university, the oldest English-speaking university in the, in the world. And so there are many traditions which are associated with the colleges, with the times of the year, and with sport, and with eating, for example. Eugene Each college is very different um, from um, the others, and it has its own character. Some colleges are very conservative, and some are much more liberal and have a tradition of um, kind of liberal politics. But there are also some specific traditions. Julie Formal Hall is when we all eat together here in college, the professors and the students. Usually it takes places at seven o'clock in the evening, and the professors sit on high table which is the table over here, and the students sit on common table, which are the tables here. But everybody eats together. It's a very beautiful evening because there are, there's a special meal and we eat by candlelight. Eugene I think er, the traditions that make Oxford so unique are firstly the Oxford Union and er, secondly, May Day. The Oxford Union being a debating society where speakers come from all around the world to address the students and even allow themselves to be questioned by the students, making it a very interesting forum. Julie My favourite is er, May Day. And May Day is the first day of May, and we have a tradition called May Morning, and on May Morning everybody gets up very early and the students have a celebration. There is a choir which sings on top of the tower at Magdalen College and all the people of the town and all the students go to listen to the singing. So it's very nice. Eugene The tradition that er, was most important to me was probably Summer Eights. I was a rower. And Summer Eights is a rowing competition, held in May in the summer term. And in this competition, each college is trying to improve its place which it won the previous year and gradually work its way up the river. Julie When the students take exams, they must go to a special building and it's called Examination Schools. And also they must wear a special uniform, so they wear E.gown like mine, a black gown, and they wear a white shirt, arid the men wear a white tie and black trousers. The women wear a white shirt and a black skirt or black trousers. And they must wear this uniform, which has a Latin name - sub fuse — and they must wear this uniform in order to take their

全新版大学英语听说教程第一册听力原文 Unit 1 Part B Talking about Studying English Hello, my name is Yang Weiping. I'm a freshman at PekingUniversity and I'm majoring in chemistry. At college we have to study a foreign language. I choose English because I like listening to English programs on the radio and TV. I also like British and American pop songs. Some day I hope to visit Britain and the United States. I started learning English several years ago and I'm getting better at it. My favorite activity is listening, especially listening to songs and stories. My big problem is, however, speaking. I feel nervous whenever I speak. And I never seem to know what to say when people talk to me. But I've decided to overcome my shyness and learn to speak English by speaking as much as I can. Hi, my name is Virginia Wang. I'm a library science major at the NationalUniversity of Singapore. In our country, English is important. It is one of the official languages and you have to be fluent to English to get a good job. I've been studying English since high school. I'm good at reading because I like learning about new things and new ideas. There are so many books and articles written in English. Our textbooks at the university are in English, too. I know writing is also very important, but I find it rally difficult. When I graduate from the university I would like a job in the city library where I can read all kinds of new books. Unit 2 Part B How to Improve Your Conversation Skills To speak to people in a foreign language requires courage and a willingness to make errors. Some people are so afraid of making mistakes that they never open their mouths. And that's the biggest mistake of all. Now if you have courage and are ready to make a few errors, what do you say? First of all, you have to open the conversation. Finding an appropriate topic is half the battle. Some topics, such as the weather and news, work well. But others, such as age, money or people's appearance do not. The following are some good ways to open a conversation. Weather –It sure is cold today, isn't it? News –Did you hear about that terrible forest fire? A conversation in a foreign language doesn't always go smoothly. Sometimes your partner talks too fast and you find it difficult to follow. Not to worry, though. You can always ask your partner to repeat what he has said or to speak more slowly. For example, “Excuse me, but could you say that again? I didn't catch it.”Or “Could you speak more slowly, please?”At the end of a conversation you need to find a way to close it in a polite way. “Well, I really need to be going,”or “It was nice talking to you”are frequently used by people to end a
