Chapter I Introduction

1.1 Definition of Interpretation

Interpretation has been existed for more than two thousand years, which could be traced back to early human society (Deming Mei, 2011). At that time, primitive tribes were isolated to each other and had their economic and cultural activities respectively. However, due to the necessity of development of economy, interpretation emerged.

Pochhacker claims that interpreting is a form of translation in which a first and final rendition in another language is produced on the basis of a one-time presentation of an utterance in a source language. Deming Mei believes that interpretation is an action that translates information from one language to another language. During the process, information should be expressed quickly and accurately

There are many forms of escort interpretation , such as simultaneous interpretation, alternating interpretation, sight interpretation.

Simultaneous interpretation is that interpreter translates source language to target-language, while the source-language is speaking continuously. Interpreter only has few seconds to think before translating. This kind of interpretation is often used in occasions like meetings, seminars and tutorials (Deming Mei, 2011).

Alternating interpretation means that the interpreter translates both two languages to each other at the same time (Deming Mei, 2011). It is widely used in conservations.

Sight interpretation is the combination of translation and interpretation. The interpreter renders the written source language to target language (Deming Mei, 2011). It is very useful when it comes to documents.
