V The Renaissance Period
The Renaissance marks a transition from the medieval to the modern world .Generally, it refers to the period between the 14th and mid-17th centuries.It frist started in Italy, with the flowering of painting, sculpture and literature. From Italy the movement went to embrace the rest of Europe.The Renaissance, which means rebirth or revival,is actually a movement stimulated by a series of historical events, such as the rediscovery of ancient Roman and Greek culture , the new discoveries in geography and astrology, the religious reformation and the economic expansion. The Renaissance, therefore, in essence, is a historical period in which the European humanist thinkers and scholars made attempts to get rid of those old feudalist idears in medieval Europe, to introduce new idears that expressed the interests of the rising bourgroisie, and to recover the purity of the early church from the corruption of the Roman Catholic Church
The Victorian Period
Chronologically the Victorian period roughly coincides with the reign of Queen Victoria who ruled over England from 1836 to 1901.The period has been generally regarded as one of the most glorious in the history.
During the next twenty years, England settled down to a time prosperity and relative stability. With the Industrial Revolution in full swing, the nation was well ahead of others in development. The spectability and material progress. People as a whole were trying to live up to a national spirit of earnestness, respectability, modesty and domesticity, with the Queen herself as the epitiome of such virtues. Common sense and moral propriety, which were ignored by the romanticists, again became the predomiant preccupation in literary works.
Victorian literature, as a product of its age, naturally took on its quality of magnitude and diversity. It was many-side and complex, and reflected both romantically andrealistically the great changes that were going on in people life and thought. Great writers and great works abounded.
Victorian literature, in general,truthfully represents the reality and spirit of the age. The high-spiried vitality, the down-to -earth earnestness, the good-natured humor and unbounded imagination are all unprecedented. In almost every genre it paved the way for the coming centugy, where its spirits, values and experiments are to witness their bumper harvest.
The difference between The Renaissance Period and The Victorian Period
The Renaissance was slow in reaching England not only because of England separation from the Continent but also because of its domestic unrest. The century and a half following the death of Chaucer is the most volcanic period of English history. The war-like nobles seized the power of England and turned it into self-destryction.
