My doorbell rings. On the step, I find the elderly Chinese lady, small and slight, holding the hand of a little boy. In her other hand, she holds a paper carrier bag.

I know this lady. It is not her first visit. She is the boy’s grandmother, and her daughter bought the ho use next door last October.

Her daughter, Nicole, speaks fluent English. But she is now in Shanghai, and her parents are here with the little boy. Nicole has obviously told her mother that I am having heart surgery soon, so her mother has decided I need more nutrients.

I know what is inside the bag—a thermos with hot soup and a stainless-steel container with rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp (虾), sometimes with a kind of pancake. This has become an almost-daily practice.

Communication betw een us is somewhat affected by the fact that she doesn’t spea k English and all I can say in Chinese is hello. Once, she brought an iPad as well as the food. She pointed to the screen, which displayed a message from her daughter telling me that her mother wanted to know if the food was all right and whether it was too salty. I am not used to iPads, so she indicated I should go with her to her house. Then, she handed the iPad to her husband and almost immediately I found myself looking at Nicole in Shanghai a nd discussing her mother’s cooking and salt intake. Instantly, tears filled my eyes.

“Your mother just can’t be bringing me meals like this all the time,” I insisted. “I can hardly do dishes in return.”

“Oh, no, Lucy.” Nicole said. “Mum doesn’t like western food. Don’t worry about it; she has to cook for the three o f them anyway, and she wants to do it.”

The doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar brown paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to me.

I am now working on some more Chinese words —it’s th e least I can do after such display of kindness.

“Thank you” is, of course, the first one. Somehow, it seems inadequate.

25.Why does the elderly Chinese lady visit Lucy regularly?

A. She learns to speak English from Lucy.

B. She teaches Lucy to cook Chinese food.

C. She cares about Lucy’s state of health.

D. She wants to make friends with Lucy.

26. What’s the purpose of Nicole’s mum taking an iPad to Lucy’s home?

A. To show Lucy a film.

B. To communicate with Lucy.

C. To ask Lucy how to use it.

D. To teach Lucy how to cook.

27. What does Lucy mainly want to express in this passage?

A. Her thanks to the Chinese family.

B. Her preference for the Chinese food.

C. Her love of the advanced technology.

D. Her affection for the Chinese language.

C

The “24 solar terms” was firstly used in China. It was created tho usands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agriculture. Ancient Chinese people used it to guide agriculture production, special climate signs and even

healthy living tips. Last year, the 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO’s world intangible cul tural heritage list. Now, it has been brought to life thanks to a creative designer from Southwest China’s Guizhou province.

On the eve of this year’s Qingming Festival, Shi Changhong released(发布) his version of re-produced and pack-aged characters for eac h solar term in the form of “moving art” of gifs (动画). Since their first release on Zccol on March 29, the gifs have won great praise among the general public and quickly swept social media with millions of hits during the festival period.

To maximize publicity, Shi released his work in three forms: video, cartoon and picture, while, the background sounds add to the brilliance.

“When I watch the short video, I can strongly feel the Chinese-style elements(元素) hidden in them. And it is really cool to refresh Chinese traditional culture in such a unique way.” WeChat user Xiao Feifei said.

“It is really a comfort to me to see so many people like my latest work. To be honest, it would really surprise me if the work does not awaken a sensation among Chinese people. The 24 solar items is a concept that sums up the essence(精髓) of Chinese wisdom. However, only a small percentage of people know all the names or the correct order of those terms. My intention i s to increase Chinese people’s self awareness to learn more about our traditional fine culture. Actually, the 24 solar i tems work is only a part of my whole design program ‘Charm China’, which I started over a year ago.” Shi told China Daily.

28.What do you t hink the underlined word “Zccol” refers to?

A.A magazine.

B. A website.

C. A radio broadcast.

D. A daily newspaper.

29. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To introduce a creative designer.

B. To introduce the origin of the 24 solar terms.

C. To introduce a design program “Charm China”.

D. To introduce the 24 solar items work.

30. What can we know from the text?

A. The background sounds of the work make the video more attractive.

B. It really surprised Shi Changhong to see so many people like his latest work.

C. Most old people know all the names of the correct order of the 24 solar terms.

D. The 24 solar it ems work by Shi Changhong was added to UNESCO’s heritage list.

31. Which part of the newspaper does the text probably belong to?

A. Travel.

B. Business.

When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they’re usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure?Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.

Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the shade of taller trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full-sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits.

Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases local wildlife habitat. Native birds nest

and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating(迁徙) birds rest there.

Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers(化肥) and pesticides(杀虫剂) are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, but then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink.

Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as “shade grown”and “bird friendly.”Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we’re paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it’s worth it.

32.Which opinion does the author probably agree with?

A. Pesticides should be forbidden in coffee planting.

B. Farmers should change the places to grow coffee.

C. Shade-grown coffee should be supported.

D. People should buy full-sun coffee.

33. Compared with the traditional method, what advantage does the full-sun method have?

A. It can protect the ecosystem.

B. It can promote people’s health.

C. It can provide more nests for birds.

D. It can increase the production of coffee.

34. How do farmers get more land to grow full-sun coffee?

A. They cut down trees.

B. They move to other countries.

C. They turn grassland into farmland.

D. They buy more land from other farmers.

35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. Why plant Full- Sun coffee?

B. Why buy Shade-Grown coffee?

C. How does Shade-Grown coffee affect the health?

D. How does Full-Sun coffee damage the ecosystem?

Text 1

W: Hey, how did you do on the exam?

M: Ah, I got an 82. It’s OK, I guess. But I thought I’d get at least an 85.

Text 2

W: If you scare me like that again, I’ll yell and the neighbors will hear.

M: I’m sorry. It was too good to pass up. You were just sitting there, and I thought it would be funny to throw the cat on you.

Text 3

W: When will you be home?

M: Around three.

W: OK. I’ll need the car after that. I’m going to the movies with Sharon.

M: Oh. I was hoping to take you out to dinner.

Text 4

W: Airport, please. I’m running a little late. So just take the fastest way, even if it’s not the most direct.

M: Sure, but there is a lot of traffic everywhere today because of the football game.

Text 5

M: I’m still wo ndering whether we should get another credit card.

W: Isn’t that just another bill to pa y?

M: It could be. But we don’t have to use it a lot. I just want to build up our credit scores. They’re not as high as they should be, and the only way to get a home loan is to have really good credit.

Text 6

W: We’re nearly there. Will we be allowed to v isit all the ships, Peter? The space station and aircraft equipment, as well as the others?

M: Yes, I expect so. We shall see most of them.

W: Good! Visiting spaceship s is always exciting. But remember, we’ve got work to do. We’ve got a story to write and photographs to take.

M: Will we be allowed to take photographs?

W: Yes. I think so. And there’ll be a chance to ask questions.

Text 7

W: May I help you?

M: Yes. I’d li ke to book three seats to Calgary Canada on a flight leaving sometime before next Sunday.

W: Economy class?

M: Yes.

W: One-way or round trip?

M: One-way.

W: There aren’t any direct flights, sir. You will have to change in Vancouver.

M: That’s all right.

W: There is a Canadian Airlines Flight 30 leaving Beijing next Friday at 10:00 am. It has three seats available. Will that be all right?

M: That’s fine.

W: Your name, please?

M: B-a-s-i-l, Basil. How much is the ticket?

W: $580 for one.

Text 8

M: Oh, no. Is it almost 7:00 am? Why didn’t my alarm work?

W: What’s wrong? Your class starts at 8:00 am. You have plenty of time, don’t you?

M: No, today is my school field trip. I need to be at school by 7:15 am.

W: Oh, yeah, that’s right. You asked me to pack your l unch box last night.

M: Can you drive me there right now, Mom? I would be late if I took the bus.

W: Sorry, sweetie. I haven’t taken a shower or gotten dressed. I need at least 20 minutes.

M: No way. I will be in big trouble.

W: Oh. Look out the window! Seems like Mrs. Anderson will drive her son, Billy, to school right now. How about you go with them? Billy is your best friend. I’m sure Mrs. Anderson wouldn’t mind taking you with them, right? M: You’re brilliant, Mom.

Text 9

M: How do you usually get to work in the morning?

W: I try to ride my bike most of the time. Of course, when I’m running late, I take the subway.

M: I always seem to be five or ten minutes late for everything. I drive to work every day, so if the traffic is bad, I have to think of a new way to apologize to my boss for being late.

W: Does your boss yell at you if yo u’re late?

M: No, not really. He knows that I live far away. I stay late whenever I don’t make it on time in the morning, and it probably helps that I earn a fair amount of money for the company year after year.

W: Have you ever considered moving into the city to be closer to your job?

M: To be honest, I would rather change jobs than houses! My wife loves our house, especially since she works from home. Our kids are in great schools. And on the weekends, there are a million things for us to do as a family. W: It does sound nice. For me, though, I love living in the city. There are so many cultural activities, and I love not having to drive.

M: Yeah, driving is pretty stressful sometimes.

W: I think it’s also easier to live in the city when you don’t have kids. If I were a mom, I’d probably live closer to

you.

M: Well, you and Timothy might want to think about getting started with that…

W: You sound just like my mother-in-law!

Text 10

Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve traveled all the way from England, and it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States! This is the first stop on my book tour. I’m off to Australia next! Before I take any questions, let me tell you a bit about myself. My new novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, was recently published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend, Queenie Hennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in 2012. It was almost chosen for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc.
