Giraffes Can’t Dance

Gerald was a tall giraffe whose neck was long and slim, but his knees were awfully bandy and his legs were rather thin.

He was a very good at standing still and munching shoots off trees, but when he tried to run around he buckled at the knees.

Now every year in Africa they hold the Jungle Dance, where every single animal turn up to skip and prance. And this year when the day arrived poor Gerald felt so sad, because when it came to dancing he was really very bad.

Gerald dimply froze up, he was rooted to the spot. “They?re tight,”

he thought, “I?m useless, I feel like such a clot.”

So he crept off from the dancefloor and he started walking home, he?d never felt so sad before so sad and so alone.

Then he found a little clearing and he looked up at the sky, “The m oon can be so beautiful,” he whispered with a sign.

“Excuse me!” coughed a cricket who?d seen Gerald earlier on, “but sometimes when you?re different you just need a different song.”

“Listen to the swaying grass and listen to the trees, to me the sweete st music is those branches in the breeze.” “So imagine that lovely

moon is playing just for you, everything makes music if you really want it to.”

With that, the cricket smiled and picked up his violin, then Gerald felt his body do the most amazing thing.

His hooves had started shuffling making circles on the grand, his neck was gently swaying and his tail was swishing round.

He threw his arms out sideways and he swung them everywhere, then he did a backwards somersault and leapt up in the air.

Gerald felt so wonderful his mouth was open wide, “I am dancing!

Yes, I?m dancing! I AM DANCING!” Gerald cried.

Then one by one each animal who?d been there at the dance arrived while Gerald boogied on and watched him quite entranced.

They shouted, “It?s a mi racle! We must be in a dream, Gerald?s the best dancer that we?ve ever never seen.”

“How is it you can dance like that? Please, Gerald, tell us now.” But Gerald simply twizzled round and finish with a bow.

Then he raised his head and looked up at the moon and stars above.

“We all can dance,” he said, “When we find music that we love.”

小贴士:读书技巧

有人问我,同样在大学时代,你是怎么读了那么多书籍呢,其实这个问题,虽然有些惭愧,不过我确实有些话要说:有一门学问叫“阅读学”,简单明了,如名字所说,就是教人怎么读书的——我也把我自己的一些读书经验加进去,都是些非常实用的东西,希望这篇文章对大学生们有益吧

一(读书速度:如果你读书时眼睛是一个字一个字盯着看,那是显然读不下去的,只要一小会你的读书欲望就消失得无影无踪。你读书时的速度要快,一眼能看一句话,甚至一行字,乃至所谓的“一目十行”。不用惊讶,一目十行似地看书并不意味着没有效率,相反看书过慢者才是真正的效率低下者。有个美国人出了本建立阅读学的书,叫这种快速浏览“检视阅读”,极力称是很有效的读书方法,我深深认同。我曾经用了四个小时时间读完陆遥的《平凡的世界》四部,事后与一个看

了十几天的同学比较,我记忆的情节和对书的理解远比另一位同学好,而他是所谓非常仔细阅读的那种。

当然,检视阅读是必须学会,练会的技巧,但不代表不需要详细阅读。当在读书时遇到特别好的段落或特别必要的段落,可以把速度放到最慢,反复地读,详细地读,甚至如果有必要就把它记忆在头脑之中,对于其他段落采取检视阅读的手段。这里面还有一个问题,在读书中遇到不懂的地方怎么办,答案是你把它略过去不用管它,因为这样的地方通常是学科内比较困难的东西,对于你一个外行来说不是很必要掌握。当然也存在另一种情况,就是你不懂的这个地方很重要,这时你只能放慢整体速度对不懂的部分进行详细阅读了。

那么有人还会质疑,这样读书,不是把书糟蹋了吗,其实,一本书中有30%的精华就不错了,或者我说,你能理解30%就可以了,这30%约等于80%。当你快速阅读的时候,你脑子中总会留下一些印象,那些印象性的东西,就是将深刻印在你脑子中的知识。因为,只有你感兴趣的东西,你的思维才会接受,才会理解,而这部分东西也常常就是该书籍的精华。不管你读得怎样快,你脑子中一直存在的疑问,也会在读到某个时候迎刃而解——这与速度无关,与书中是否有你需要的东西有关。如果有的话,你读得再快,答案也是跑不掉的,这就是关

键所在。

其实,我想大家肯定听过有所谓的快速阅读培训班或培训书籍的事,声称3分钟能读一本几百页的书。其实这说法部分是真的,他教你的方法就是快速检视阅读——他的方法是让你把一页书当成图形输入进你脑子中,我曾经多次尝试,的确有时候可以做到,不过需要超常规地注意力,很费心神,不太实际应用。但这说法部分是假的,所谓3分钟读完夸大其辞,是有意的虚假宣传。但不管怎么样,有这么个事在,更证实了人的阅读速度是可以很快的,只是平时我们想不到。

PS:读得慢,读得“仔细”,很多时候等同于“读不下去”。那么快速读书,即使你理解得少又怎么样呢,你说呢,

不过,量变终将引起质变,所以快速阅读习惯的养成,是个必须!

二(读书顺序:

很多同学一明白读书的好处之后,就拿过来大部头的书开始读,结果没过一会就读不下去了。这很正常,如果每个人都能一下子看下去就都成了超人了,这种方法显然不智。

那么究竟该如何读书呢,这需要一种策略,简单说就是选好顺序。一般来说,读某一学科书时最好先看这一学科的发展史,了解历史上这个学科是什么样子的。这可是大有好处的,因为每个学科的发展,都是从简单到复杂,从谬误到真理,从一个流派到众多流派,而这个学科的学科史恰恰表现的就是这些。而读史是很轻松的,在舒畅的氛围中读完学科的发展史,就基本上对学科有了理性的认识了。这时根据你的兴趣所在或逻辑顺序,你就可以进入到这个学科中了。

读完学科史之后,就要选取理论书籍了,作为一个该学科的初学者,要选取该学科初级理论书籍——很多时候你有这个初级水平就可以了,除非你想深入。现在新出的书有很多很人性化的,他在书中穿插了很多故事,一边讲故事一边讲理论,读者很容易接受(本书就想达到这个目的),而且这些讲的理论都是实用性很高的东西,值得关注。另外你在选书时要看清“……入门”“教你……”“从零学起”字样,你都可以选看,因为这些东西都适合你入门使用。

如果你入了门,对这个科目有了浓厚兴趣,就要进入深入一点的阅读了。这时候,你可以按着标准教程一步一步学习。不过这里我想提醒大家的书,除了标准教程值得看外,其他各流派的书也值得你看,这可以有效丰富你的思维。

这里我需要特别指出的是:除非你想特别深入学习该学科,否则关于该学科大家名家写的书就不需要看了。这些人写的书非常难懂,不适合初级层次的读者阅

读。如果很必要看一点原著,那你不妨找一本关于原著的解析书籍或其他人做注释的书籍。在哲学书籍阅读时尤其如此,我曾读尼采的“查拉图斯特拉如是说”,连续几天读不懂其中一段话的意思,疑为天书;后来读后人的解析,对尼采的思想才有了充分的认识,可是还读不懂他的书——读懂他们写的书的任务还是交给专业人士吧。

三(读书的其他方面

1.同时拥有三本书,两本比较枯燥的,一本特别感兴趣的,轮换读书;

2.有必要在大型图书馆办借阅证,能找到你想找的书并把握时代潮流;

3.给自己读书创造最良好的环境,比如适当的灯光或一杯咖啡;

4.当你读了一个学科书后,与这个专业的专业人士进行沟通交流;

5.如果你上的是你根本不愿上或对你毫无意义的课,不如用这时间读书;

6.读书遵循实用主义原则;

7.虽然有兴趣或动力等,但读书还会是很枯燥的,要有良好的耐心;

8.不要急功近利,想要读到什么就应用什么。要耐心等候读书在你内心内化的过程,然后等待哪一天才用得上。

9.各个学科的书都值得读;不过如果你的兴趣不够广泛,就读你兴趣之内的书。把你喜欢的那类书都读读,比如说同学科内的各种思想,各个流派,各个年代,很有益处。
