My First Day of School

Fear started taking over, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, hoping America would help my future.

On the first day, with fear, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Everyone’s eyes were on me as I entered the room. Without paying attention to them, I went straight to the teacher and ask this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes,” his voice comforted me a little. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I chose the seat closest to the door. In India we assigned (指定的)seats. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image (彰像)produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we didn't use the technology we had. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.

Since it was my first day, I was confused which hallway touse, but I managed to get to my classes without asking anyone, I wasquite sure when I would have lunch. When the lunch bell rang, I headed for the cafe. I felt lucky because we didn't have this in India. Every confusion seemed like an obstacle (障碍)I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I got on my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn't so bad.

As time passed that year, I developed some friendships started to love my school. The teachers had a fun way of making hard things so easy that a three-year-old could do them. In India the teachers had a more strict way of saying things. We also had much longer school days in India —7 a.m. to 5:30 pm — while in America school was 7:30 to 2:30. The main difference I found in America is the amount I learned each day. Because of these educational opportunities I feel I am the luckiest person in whole world.

Kids Speak Up

In an online poll(投票),TIME FOR KIDS and https://www.360docs.net/doc/9318380181.html, asked kids how they are getting along with their parents. Here’s what they told us.

Getting Along and Having Fun

About two out of three kids said they get along very well with theirparents. About four out of five told us they have fun with theirparents. But that doesn’t mean they never disagree. In fact, mostkids reported arguing with their parents sometimes.

“It’s common to disagree and argue,” says D'Arcy Lyness, achild psychologist (心理学家).“But it’s also important to learn howto do so respectfully ” About half of the kids said they are doing that. When they disagree with their parents, they say they have adiscussion calmly.

But two out of five kids said arguments always involve shouting at each other. Lyness points out that shouting never helps. “Speak up, and let your parents know your ideas” she advises. "But be patient. Don’t use a raised, angry voice.”

Not surprisingly: three out of four kids admitted (承认)to lying at times. Many said they lie to avoid getting in trouble or disappointing their parents. According to Lyness, lying isn’t just wrong. It can actually get bad results. Telling the truth builds trust. "When parents can trust you: they are more likely to give you more freedom.” she says.

A Changing Relationship

Kids ages 12 to 14 not only said they lie more, but they also reported having less fun, feeling less close, and not getting along as well with their parents.

According to Lyness, those feelings are not uncommon. As kidsgrow up, they have more disagreements or arguments with theirparents. But it doesn't have to be that way. "Kids and parents getalong differently at different times of the journey of life/' she says.As kids grow and change, it is important for everybody to adapt (适应).“There’s a dance of ways that you act with

others and getalong,” she points out. “Then there’s a change, and it’s a differentdance.” Change is normal, she stresses.

Share this story with your family. You may find that you have alot to talk about.

49. According to the poll how many kids get along very well with their parents?

A. About 4/5.

Travelling with your belongs on your back, or backpacking is self-planned budget ( 预算)touring using low-cost transport, and often going on foot.

Backpackers don’t carry suitcases or stay in pricey hotels. Instead, they walk around with backpacks filled with everything they need: ready to sleep under the stars if necessary. With their limited budget, they need to choose lodgings (住宿) and transport based on an old saying — the lower the price, the better.

The lure (吸引力)of adventure has made backpacking a popular travel style among young people and students who are seldom owners of fat wallets. They prefer exploring a place by themselves, with only a printed map, or a smart phone on hand.

"A package tour may suit a family’s needs, but it’s not my cup of tea/1 says Betty Lam, who went backpacking in New Zealand with three friends last summer. “I want to explore a place according to my choice, my timetable and myself.”

Were there any particularly memorable events on the trip?

"Once? the train to Auckland was put off and two of our groupwere hungry, so they left their backpacks with us and went to a nearby shop to buy something to eat. I still remember the scene with Tammy and me running flat out to catch the train, carrying four huge backpacks. The other

two were racing behind us as they'd panicked when they saw the train getting ready to pull away from the station. I held the train door open while Tammy was shouting. “Quick —jump in!” Susie came in head first with June landing on the top of her like a sack of potatoes! It was so funny!"

So was the trip worth all the effort?

“Definitely. True, we had a few quarrels (争吵);we have different interests, and it wasn't easy to please everybody- But we managed to reach a compromise (妥协)every time. Travelling with friends helps you learn about getting on with people and working together. All of us had gained a lot by the end of the holiday —the four of us had become really good buddies.”

What should backpackers always carry with them?

Betty laughs — "not too much! Comfortable walking shoes are important. A raincoat is necessary and bring some practical clothes.”

So, is that everything to bear in mind?

"Well, yes and no, because you can’t prepare enough. You need much information about where you're going to stay, transport, food, etc. Most importantly, you must have insurance (保险)一just in case your money, passport or backpack get stolen, or you get sick. Take time planning and you'll have fun safely.”

53. What do backpackers usually do?

A. Stay in pricey hotels.

B. Face a lot of dangers.

C. Spend much money.

D. Choose cheap transport.

54. Which of the following statements about Betty is true?

A. Betty preferred travelling with her family on holidays.

B. The friendship improved as a result of their adventures.

C. Only half of Betty’s group caught the train to Auckland

D. Betty toured New Zealand with backpackers she met there.

55. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

A. To give us some advice on backpacking.

B. To tell us about Betty5s travelling story.

C. To introduce a hot travel style, backpacking.

D. To encourage us to travel with less money.

Crazy about Selfies

Since the 2014 Oscars ceremony selfie (自拍)of Bradley Cooper stormed the Internet, it seems that every one shows great interest. And now people are sharing even their most private moments. TV star Kim Kardashian could be called “the queen of the selfie”. She’s turned hundreds of her selfies into a book — at every possible moment, in all poses.

If Kardashian is the queen5 then you could say Barack Obama is the king. But though Kardashian has nothing to lose by sharing too much, the same can’t be said of the US president. Politicians have to be careful with selfies. The photo he took at the funeral(葬礼)of Nelson Mandela divided public opinions. Some felt it made him look like one of us — glad to record a moment with his “mates”. Others felt the head of state behaved like a crazy teenage r.

Unfortunately for the US congressman (国会议员)Anthony Weiner, his habit of sending his private selfies to women killed his political career (事业).

Being crazy about selfies can also harm your health. ToddFassler from California ended up in hospital after he found a snake—he tried to take a selfie with it. The animal wasn't interested in the idea and bit him.

Why do we take so many selfies? Dr Terri Apter from Cambridge University, told the Daily Telegraph: “We all like the idea of being in control of our im age and getting attention, being part of the culture. There’s celebrity (名人)culture —unless you’re being noticed, you're nobody. You have to get enough attention and show your life is amazing, even if it isn't.”

The word selfie was Oxford Dictionaries7 word of the year in 2013. But many believe it started much earlier in 1839 as Robert Cornelius, a chemist from Philadelphia, uncovered the lens(镜头), ran into the shot for a minute before running back to cover the lens again. These days, you don’t

need to run for a photo anymore and soon, you don't even have to spread your arms. Now you are even able to take a selfie by drone (无人机)! Fix your camera onto it: and it will follow your every move. Does it sound exciting to you?

61. What could Kim Kardashian be called?

62. Do politicians have to be very careful with selfies?

63. What happened when Todd Fassler tried to take a selfie with a snake?

64. According to the passage, why do the celebrities take selfies?

65. Do you think the selfie is good? Why?

However, when it came time to find the kittens homes, no one knew where Jack would end up. That’s when I got an e-mail from my friend. All she asked was “Do you still want one of the kittens?
