TEXT A

Every evening, some part of the British Commonwealth hears the chimes of Big Ben, largest of the bells in the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster. The tower is popularly called Big Ben, but it is the great bell which really is Big Ben. It is this bell which chimes out the quarter hours to the people of London. For Britons at sea or living in distant lands, the sound of Big Ben is still a link with home, for the chimes are broadcast each evening by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Big Ben has been chiming out the quarter hours now for over a century. It started chiming on June 11, 1859.

At that time, Parliament could n’t decide what to name the bell. A light-hearted member of Parliament called attention, in a speech, to stout Sir Benjamin Hall, Queen Victoria’s Chief Lord of the Woods and Forests.

“Call it Big Ben,” said the speaker, and the name stuck.

Big Ben is 9 feet in diameter, 7 feet 6 inches tall, and the thickness where the hammer strikes is 8.75 inches.

The clock that regulates the chiming of Big Ben keeps good time. In 1939, the Royal Astronomer made a 290-day check on the performance of the clock. He found that during this test the margin of error was less than two-tenths of a second in 24 hours on 93 days and greater than one second only on 16 of the 290 days.

There was an unexpected slight error on August 12, 1945 and fear swept throughout the Ministry of Works. On that dark day, the clock was five minutes slow. A flock of birds had rested on the minute hand.

1. Aside from popular usage, Big Ben is really the __________.

A) clock tower of the Palace of Westminster

B) great bell in the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster

C) exclusive radio signal of the BBC

D) both A and B

2. The year 1959 was the __________.

A) 59th anniversary of Big Ben C) last year Big Ben was heard

B) 100th anniversary of Big Ben D) year in which Big Ben was restored

3. Big Ben is __________.

A) 18 feet in radius C) 8.75 feet tall

B) 7 feet 6 inches in diameter D) 9 feet in radius

4. In 1939, the Royal Astronomer found that the clock that regulates the chiming of Big Ben

__________.

A) was usually very inaccurate

B) lost 24hours in 290 days

C) had a very small margin of error most of the time

D) no longer kept good time due to war damage

5. In the Royal Astronomer’s 290-day check, the clock’s margin of error was __________.

A) less than one-tenth of a second every day C) greater than one second on 16 days

B) five minutes a week D) 16 seconds a day.

TEXT B

When we think of creative people the names that probably spring to mind are those of men such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Pablo Picasso, i.e. great artists, inventors and scientists—a selected and exceptionally gifted body of men with rare talent and genius. The tendency to regard creativity and imaginative thinking as the exclusive of a lucky few disregards the creative and imaginative aspects inherent in the solution of many of the tasks we regularly have to face- the discovery and development of new methods and techniques, the improvement of old methods, existing inventions and products.

Everyone has creative ability to some extent. Creative thinking involves posing oneself a problem and then originating or inventing a solution along new and unconventional lines. Is involves drawing new analogies, discovering new combinations, and/ or new applications of things that are already known. It follows, then, that a creative person will exhibit great intellectual curiosity and imagination. He will be alert observant with a great store of information which he will be able to sort and combine, in the solution of problem. He will be emotionally receptive to new and unconventional ideas and will be less interested in facts than in their implication. Most important of all, he will be able to communicate uninhibitedly and will not be too concerned about other peop le’s reaction to his apparently “crazy” notions. People called the Wright brothers mad but it did not stop them from becoming the first men to construct and fly a heavier-than-air craft.

6. The author believes that creative thinking __________.

A) is only possessed by great artists C) is needed in the solution of many

problems

C) requires rare talent and genius D) belongs to a luck few

7. In order to solve scientific problems, people __________.

A) should not be afraid of what others think C) must possess crazy notions

B) should be mad D) should have inhibitions

8. Creative thinking involves __________.

A) drawing new pictures of old things

B) observing the actions of great people

C) finding a problem and originating a solution

D) discovering new emotions

9. A creative person must look at facts __________.

A) for their face-value C) and remember them

B) for what they imply D) which are less interesting

10. Th e work “unconventional” (line 2, Para. 2) probably means __________.

A) not ordinary C) unacceptable

B) not political D) not creative

TEXT C

The great advance in rocket theory 40 years ago showed that liquid-fuel rockets were far superior in every respect to the skyrocket with its weak solid fuel, the only kind of rocket then known. However, during the last decade, large solid-fuel rockets with solid fuels about as

powerful as liquid fuels have made their appearance, and it is a favorite layman’s (门外汉的) question to inquire which one is “better”. The question is meaningless; one might as well ask whether a gasoline or diesel engine is “better”. It all depends on the purpose. A liquid-fuel rocket is complicated, but has the advantage that it can be controlled beautifully. The burning of the rocket engine can be stopped completely: it can be reignited when desired. In addition, the thrust can be made to vary by adjusting the speed of the fuel pumps. A solid-fuel rocket, on the other hand, is rather simple in construction, though hard to build when a really large size is desired. But once you have a solid-fuel rocket, it is ready for action at very short notice. A liquid-fuel rocket has to be fueled first and cannot be held in readiness for very long after it has been fueled. However, once a solid-fuel rocket has been reignited, it will keep burning. It cannot be stopped and reignited whenever desired (it could conceivably be stopped and reignited after a pre-calculated time of burning has elapse D) and its thrust cannot be varied. Because a solid-fuel rocket can be kept ready for a long time, most military missiles employ solid fuels, but manned space flight needs the fine adjustments that can only be provided by liquid fuels. It may be added that a liquid-fuel rocket is an expensive device; a large solid-fuel rocket is, by comparison, cheap. But the solid fuel, pound by pound, cost about 10 times as much as the liquid fuel. So you have, on the one hand, an expensive rocket with a cheap fuel and on the other hand a comparatively cheap rocket with an expensive fuel.

11. The author feels that a comparison of liquid-fuel rockets and solid-fuel rockets shows that

__________

A) neither type is very economical C) each type has certain advantages

B) the liquid-fuel rocket is better D) the solid-fuel rocket is better

12. Solid-fuel rockets are expensive to operate because of their __________.

A) size C) burning time

B) fuel D) complicated engines

13. Which of the following statements is NOT the characteristic of liquid-fuel rockets?

A) The fuel is cheap. C) They are cheap to build.

B) They can be stopped and reignited. D) They must be used soon after fueling.

14. When a liquid-fuel rocket is used, the burning of the rocket engine __________.

A) cannot be controlled easily C) cannot be stopped

B) will keep burning D) can be stopped completely

15. Which of the following statements is true?

A) A solid-fuel rocket is more complicated in construction than a liquid-fuel one.

B) A solid-fuel rocket is simpler in construction than a liquid-fuel one.

C) A liquid-fuel rocket is an expensive device with an expensive fuel.

D) A solid-fuel rocket is a cheap device with a cheap fuel.

Exercise 1: Translate the following sentence into Chinese.(30%) The dominant purpose in starting the public enterprises had been public good and profit motive was secondary; however, of late the scenario has changed. With the liberalisation of markets the public undertakings are in direct competition with the private players and have to have profit motive in mind. If not, there have been criticisms by industry on the unequal treatment meted out to the private players. Here it is important to note the definition of "enterprise" under the Competition Act. It makes no distinction between a private and a public enterprise/undertaking. In fact it even includes a department of the Government which does not perform a "sovereign function". Functionally, the public undertakings have been broadly classified into four heads: ?Financial Institutions, such as Life Insurance Corporation of India, Reserve Bank of India, Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation Ltd, Film Finance Corporation Ltd, Unit Trust of India, Industrial Reconstruction Bank, etc. ?Promotional and Development Undertakings, such as Rehabilitation Housing Corporation Ltd, National Research Development Corporation Ltd, Food Corporation of India, Central Warehousing Corporation, National Small Industries Corporation Ltd, etc. ?Commercial and Industrial Undertakings, such as State Trading Corporation, Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd, Indian Airlines Corporation, Air India, etc. ?Public Utilities are those undertakings which render certain essential services to the people, like transportation, electricity, communications, energy, etc. The objective of such undertakings is to provide services to the community economically and efficiently and making profit is not the primary aim.

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.
