(4)When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs,

newspapers, or to the Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife, because of their highly developed senses. Drops in air pressure produce an effect on small animals in many ways. Mice and deer are good weather indicators . People who spend a lot of time outdoors have observed that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around. Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains.

Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a pressure drop in many ways. For example, some birds become irritable and will fight over a piece of bread. Other birds chirp (作唧唧声)and sing just before a storm. It seems that they

33

know they won't get another chance for an hour or two. Birds also seek safe places before a storm. You will sometimes see birds settling in trees or gathering together on a wire close to a building. Pre-storm low pressure makes the air so thin that birds have difficulty flying.

It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime, rather than during the periods in spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see this. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying ahead of a storm.

By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather.

(4)Boys are not naturally better at maths than girls, and any difference in test scores is

because of nurture rather than nature, researchers suggested today.

According to new research published in the journal Science, the "gender gap" in maths, long thought to exist between girls and boys, disappears in societies that treat both sexes equally. When girls have equal access to education and other opportunities they do just as well as boys in maths tests.

Globally, boys tend to outperform girls in maths (on average girls score 10.5 points lower than boys )but in more "gender equal societies" such as Iceland, Sweden and Norway, girls scored as well as boys or better. For example, the maths gender gap almost disappeared in Sweden, while in Turkey girls scored 23 points below boys in maths.

Average girls' scores improved as equality improved and the number of girls reaching the highest levels of performance also increased, the researchers found. In Britain, boys progressed only slightly better than female classmates.

34

The research also found a striking gender gap in reading skills. In every country girls perform better than boys in reading but in countries that treat both sexes equally, girls do even better.

On average, girls have reading scores that are 32.7 points higher than those of boys (6.6% higher than the average scores for boys ). In Turkey, this amounts to 25.1 points higher, and in Iceland, girls score 61.0 points higher.

Sapienza said, "Our research indicates that in more gender equal societies, girls will gain an absolute advantage relative to boys."

(4)"Which of you did this? " our father asked the three of us with a sharp voice.

My elder brother, sister and I all stared down at the floor on which was a child's handwriting in chalk. I was frightened, and the only words came from my mouth were, "Not me, Dad." It wasn't that I was a bad kid, but the look on my dad's face made me feel cold.

Father had a way about him when I was a child that made me afraid of him but it gave me my limits (限)to what I could and could not do. He loved all of us and we respected him. I wanted to please him. of course. Maybe that's why I held back the truth that day.

He disappeared for minutes and came back with a piece of paper and a pencil and said, "I want each of you to write exactly what you see on the floor." I was not a foolish kid, though. So when my dad compared the handwriting. he still couldn't tell which one of us did it.

"Since none of you seemed to have done it, you all get a spanking, " said my father angrily. What? ! The last thing I wanted was a spanking!

"I did it, " someone said and I was sure it wasn't me.

35

I looked around and saw my sister come forward. By that time, I had already figured out why my sister took the rap for it. She was my protector, though she was only three years older than me. And she would rather take the pain herself than see me get punished.

We all joked about it now, including my sister. When I think back to that day, I know I learned the value of a sister who would do anything for me. And I'm glad to say that I will do the same for her.

(4)Have you ever wondered why people drive on a different side of the road? It might seem

bizarre that UK drivers stay on the left, but they're not the only ones. Around 35 percent of the world population does the same, including people in Ireland, Japan, and some Caribbean islands.

Originally, almost everybody traveled on the left side of the road. However, their way of transport was quite different from today: Think about four legs instead of four wheels. For Medieval swordsmen (剑士)on horseback, it made sense to keep to the left to have their right arms closer to their enemies. Getting on or off was also easier from the left side of the horses,

36

and safer done by the side of the road than in the centre.

So why did people stop traveling on the left? Things changed in the late 1700s when large wagons pulled by several pairs of horses were used to transport farm products in France and the United States. In the absence of a driver's seat inside the wagon, the driver sat behind the left horse, with his right arm free to use his whip (鞭子)to keep the horses moving. Since he was sitting on the left, he wanted other wagons to pass on his left, so he kept to the right side of the road.

The British Govemment refused to give up their left-hand driving ways, and in 1773introduced the General Highways Act, which encouraged driving on the left. This was later made law thanks to The Highway Act of 1835.

When Henry Ford showed his Model T in 1908, the driver's seat was on the left, meaning that cars would have to drive on the right hand side of the road to allow front and back passengers to exit the car onto the roadside. However, British drivers remain on the left, and this is highly unlikely to change.

A.Funny.

B.Strange.

C.Wrong.

D.Difficult.

What does the underlined word "bizarre" in the first paragraph mean?

(1)A.B.C.D.Why did swordsmen riding horses travel on the left in the past?

Because it was easier to carry goods.

Because it was safer to keep to the left.

Because it was more convenient to fight.

Because it was necessary for controlling the horse.

(2)A.The sitting position.

B.The road conditions.

C.The number of horses.

D.The products in the wagons.

What made drivers of large wagons travel on the right?

(3)A.To make other cars to pass on his left.

B.To offer convenience to the driver.

C.To ensure the safety of the driver.

D.To let passengers get off safely.

Why did Henry Ford's Model T have to run on the right?
