Harrow School

When Churchill visited Harrow on October 29 to hear the traditional songs again, he discovered that an additional verse had been added to one of them. It ran:

"Not less we praise in darker days

The leader of our nation,

And Churchill's name shall win acclaim

From each new generation.

For you have power in danger's hour

Our freedom to defend, Sir!

Though long the fight we know that right

Will triumph in the end, Sir!

1. Almost a year has passed since I came down here at your Head Master's kind invitation in order to cheer myself and cheer the hearts of a few of my friends by singing some of our own songs. The ten months that have passed have seen very terrible catastrophic events in the world - ups and downs, misfortunes - but can anyone sitting here this afternoon, this October afternoon,

not feel deeply thankful for what has happened in the time that has passed and for the very great improvement in the position of our country and of our home? Why, when I was here last time we were quite alone, desperately alone, and we had been so for five or six months. We were poorly armed. We are not so poorly armed today; but then we were very poorly armed. We had the unmeasured menace of the enemy and their air attack still beating upon us, and you yourselves had had experience of this attack; and I expect you are beginning to feel impatient that there has been this long lull with nothing particular turning up!

2. But we must learn to be equally good at what is short and sharp and what is long and tough. It is generally said that the British are often better at the last. They do not expect

to move from crisis to crisis; they do not always expect that each day will bring up some noble chance of war; but when they very slowly make up their minds that the thing has to be done and the job put through and finished, then, even if it takes months - if it takes years - they do it.

3. Another lesson I think we may take, just throwing our minds back to our meeting

here ten months ago and now, is that appearances are often very deceptive, and as Kipling well says, we must "…meet with Triumph and Disaster. And treat those two impostors just the same."

4. You cannot tell from appearances how things will go. Sometimes imagination makes things out far worse than they are; yet without imagination not much can be done. Those people who are imaginative see many more dangers than perhaps exist; certainly many more than will happen; but then they must also pray to be given that extra courage to carry this far-reaching imagination. But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period - I am addressing myself to the School - surely from this period of ten months this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy. We stood all alone a year ago, and to many countries it seemed that our account was closed, we were finished. All this tradition of ours, our songs, our School

history, this part of the history of this country, were gone and finished and liquidated.

5. Very different is the mood today. Britain, other nations thought, had drawn a sponge across her slate. But instead our country stood in the gap. There was no flinching and no thought of giving in; and by what seemed almost a miracle to those outside these Islands, though we ourselves never doubted it, we now find ourselves in a position where I say that we can be sure that we have only to persevere to conquer.

6. You sang here a verse of a School Song: you sang that extra verse written in my honour, which I was very greatly complimented by and which you have repeated today. But there is one word in it I want to alter - I wanted to do so last year, but I did not venture to. It is the line: "Not less we praise in darker days."

7. I have obtained the Head Master's permission to alter darker to sterner. "Not less we praise in sterner days."

8. Do not let us speak of darker days: let us speak rather of sterner days. These are not dark days; these are great days - the

greatest days our country has ever lived; and we must all thank God that we have been allowed, each of us according to our stations, to play a part in making these days memorable in the history of our race.

===============================

The speech was made 29 October 1941 to the boys at Harrow School. “Never, never,

in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.'' The full speech is contained in "The Unrelenting Struggle" (London:Cassell and Boston:Little Brown 1942, and is found on pages 274-76 of the English edition). It may also be found in "The Complete Speeches of Winston S. Churchill," edited by Robert Rhodes James (NY:Bowker and London:Chelsea House 1974).

===============================

On October 29, 1941, United Kingdom (Great Britain) Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited Harrow School to hear the

traditional songs he had sung there as a youth, as well as to speak to the students. This became one of his most quoted speeches, due to distortions that evolved about what he actually said.

The myth is that Churchill stood before the students and said, "Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give in. Never give in. Never give in. Never give in." Then he sat down. In reality, he made a complete speech that included words similar to what are often quoted. Also, some believe he said, "Never give up." That too is incorrect.

Study on Layout Optimization of Passenger Station based on Multi-objective Planning Abstract—This paper study on the optimal layout of passenger station and the basic principle of selection location. There are both quantitative index and qualitative index existing in the evaluation indexes of the layout of passenger station. To unify the evaluation indexes, this paper establishes a multi-objective planning optimization model of the layout of passenger station, by using the basic idea of multi-objective planning and introducing the effect of targets of the evaluation indexes. In Nanning railway terminal for example, four evaluation indexes: construction investment、operation cost in railway terminal、cost of passenger trip and the other social benefits are determined. Calculate respectively all effect of targets of the evaluation indexes and then determine the optimal scheme of the layout of passenger station in Nanning railway hub by the total effect of targets after being weighted. Keywords-component; multi-objective; passenger station; Layout Optimization In the past, paying much attention to improving line carrying capacity and neglecting the carrying capacity of hubs or stations in China leaded to the shortage of passenger capacity and the difficulty in meeting the demand of transport market. At present, China is in the primary stage of high-speed railway construction. High-speed railway being introduced into existing railway terminal will break the transport pattern of existing railway hub and will dramatically change the original railway hub transportation structure、transportation operation mode and transportation path. It is an important question in railway terminal planning to reasonably determine the locations and the number of the high-speed passenger stations in hub and optimize the layout of passenger stations in terminal. I Layout Optimization model of Passenger Station in railway hub A. Layout of passenger station in railway hub and basic principle of selection location (1)For human-oriented, make the trip distance and time of passenger from the starting point to passenger station shortest、the travel cost lowest、the riding most convenient and reduce the passenger transfer or make it more convenient. 英语演讲稿篇2Never, Never Give Up Never, Never Give Up We often hear people say, “Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination. A person who believes in them will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up. One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel discouraged and should try again. Besides, if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow as people. Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes only if we make a new effort. If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted. Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us

Unit 1 Never Give In, Never, Never, Never KEY TO EXERCISES Text comprehension I. Decide which of the following best states the speaker's purpose. B II. Judge, according to the text, whether the following statements are true or false. 1. T (Refer to the last sentence of Paragraph 1.) 2. T (Refer to Paragraph 2.) 3. F (Refer to Paragraph 4. Imaginative people sometimes are pessimistic, as they see things far worse than they are and foresee more dangers than there will be.) 4. F (Refer to Paragraph 5. But to their surprise, Britain stood the ordeal and this miracle changed the view of those nations.) 5. T (Refer to Paragraph 8.) III. A nswer the following questions. 1. Refer to Paragraph 2. Because he understands that the war is long and tough: it is not to end in months but in years. He tells the people there that however long the war lasts, the final victory belongs to Britain. But at the same time he makes it clear that not every day is an opportunity to take action: they have yet to wait and persevere. 2. Refer to Paragraph 3. Because he thinks that both Triumph and Disaster are deceptive in that people can make things out far worse than they really are when they have a disaster and they can lose their vigilance when they are in triumph. 3. When Britain came under the heavy air attacks by Germany, many other nations thought that Britain was finished. As the country stood the ordeal to their great surprise, those nations changed their view. 4. Refer to Paragraph 7. Because he has a strong conviction of victory. The two terms have different implications. When used in the text to refer to the days of war, "darker days" emphasizes the dark/negative side of the event and shows the user's pessimism. "Sterner days", though identical in its reference, suggests optimism and pride in having the chance to rise to the challenge. 5. Refer to Paragraph 8. Yes, I do. By paying a visit to Harrow School and making a speech there, Churchill not only encouraged the audience of his speech but the British people in general to continue to fight rather than surrender to their enemy.
