第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

A

I remember my mother as a strong woman. She came to America when she was 12-old enough to remember her language, she achieved scores and grades high enough to be admitted to Duke University. With a degree in computer science, she finally became the manager of a company in New York. My mother could give fluent speeches, say “wolves” correctly.

It was my mother who always stressed the importance of language. From the time I was born, I was read to. I would fa ll asleep to the sounds of my parents' voices, whether it was my dad’s softly accented, or my mother’s clear English. The flow of language was unbroken, and whether in Chinese or English, the stream of communication flowed through our house.

One October morning in sixth grade, after my mother had left to catch the train to the city, I left the house for the bus stop. I was surprised when I saw our car, the door hanging open. As I drew closer, I saw my mother lying on the ground.

In the hospital, it was hard to believe that the lady who lay before me was my mom. My mother could not remember my name. As the leaves changed colors, it became clear that the stroke had created a wall between my mother’s mind and mouth Her mind was not any less clear, but the words she spoke were not what she meant.

The battle my mother faced taught me the importance of language. Without it, identity does not exist; relationships cannot be formed; stories cannot be told; directions cannot be given, and knowing anything about anyone is impossible. Without language, communication cannot take place. Without language, one cannot express the beauty of a sunset or the kindness of a stranger. The world would pass us by in silence.

The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and for the environment. Those findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.

There are ways to solve this diet-health-environment problem. But they will require a change in eating habits, And what we eat can be a product of culture, personal taste, price and ease.

David Tilman is a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota. In the study, he examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. Mr Tilman noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earning rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.

The Western diet is high in refined, or processed, sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. “The excess, let us say, in the 15 richest nations of the world, right now is on the order of about 400 or 500 extra calories a day that are eaten beyond what people need, and that lead people to gain weight.”

David Tilman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. “Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these same health impacts, and in some cases if you are Asian, you have them more severely.”

And a diet bad for human beings, it seems, is also bad for the environment, As the world’s population grows, experts say, more forests and tropical areas will become farmlands for crops or grasslands for grazing cattle. These areas will be needed to meet the increasing demand for food.

“We are likely to have more greenhouse gas released in the future from agriculture because of this dietary shift than all the greenhouse gas that right now comes out of all forms of transportation. ”

Mr Tilman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health “a trilemma”. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.

28. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the report?

A. Different cultures may cause different eating habits,

B. Population increase is likely to lead some people to accept the Western diet.

C. Western foods will probably make more people overweight.

D. The Western diet is unhealthy because it is high in vitamins and proteins.

29. What can we learn from the report?

A. The Western diet does less harm to the health of Asians.

B. More greenhouse gas has been given off from agriculture.

C. Western eating habits are responsible for some diseases like cancer.

D. Nearly all people in developed countries consume more calories than needed.

30. The underlined word “trilemma” in the last paragraph means .

A. a relation to be maintained

B. an opinion causing an argument

C. a decision to be made

D. a problem offering a difficult choice

31. What does this report mainly tell us?

A. What people eat does influence their health.

B. Our change in diet will lead to global climate warming.

C. The Western diet is bad for environment as well as for human beings.

D. Industrialization considerably shortens the lifespan of the world people.

D

In recent years many countries have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied. But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes the worker's life more enjoyable, it doesn't actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, then, variety is not an important factor.

Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated machinery. Thus while freedom of choice may be important, there is usually very little that can be done to create it.

Another important consideration is how much each worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines .so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem that not only is degree of worker contribution an important factor, but it is also one we can do something about.

To what extent does more money lead to great productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them.

32. According to the author, what advantage do varied jobs bring?

A. They increase productivity enormously.

B. They reduce boredom among workers.

C. They bring out the best in workers.

D. They relieve workers' difficulties.

33. What can we clearly see from the passage?

A. It’s practical to allow more freedom in a modern factory.

B. It's necessary to have a large number of workers.

C. It's important to raise workers’ sense of contribution.

D. It’s diff icult to have more production lines.

34. The passage seems to suggest that ________.

A. more money leads to demands for shorter working hours

B. more money does not automatically create higher productivity

C. workers like more money better than more interesting jobs

D. workers expect to have both more money and more interesting jobs

35.What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. How to enrich workers'1ife.

B. How to make workers more productive.

C. How to shorten working hours.

D. How to decrease dullness in a factory.

“Over the past three decades, people have s tarted eating out more than ever before and purchasing more prepared foods at the grocery store, which tend to contain more fat, salt and sugar than their home-made foods,” noted US healthy living website SparkPeople.

37 It encourages us to value the time we spend preparing, sharing and consuming food, as a recent USA Today article put it. It all started in 1986 with the efforts of Slow Food’s founding father, Italian activist Carlo Petrini, who wanted to bring back food varieties and flavors that had gone dark in the face of industrialization. 38 Now, his idea is almost the mainstream.

Starting at the table, the movement promotes an unhurried way of life founded on the idea that everyone has a right to cooking pleasure, and that everyone must als o take responsibility to “protect the heritage (遗产) of food, tradition and culture that make this celebration of the senses possible”, wrote The Phnom Penh Post.

“39 It means turning down the speed at which we eat and increasing the amount of time we spend dining together with other people,” Althea anecosky, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, told The Huffington Post. “40 Dinner table conversations keep families together,” noted the Belgian non-profit organization Greenfudge.

A. It is a way to bring back the social togetherness of yesterday.

B. It seems that we have adapted our foods to our fast-paced lives.

C. So, the Slow Food Movement has occurred against this fast-food trend.

D. Slow Food doesn’t necessarily mean food that tak es a long time to cook.

E. It is based on the idea that we should spend as much time as possible on cooking.

F. It’s not only the food itself but also the time we spend dining together that matters.

G. At that time, he asked people to follow a more sustainable (可持续的) living model.

a young girl called Vanessa. Vanessa had dif ficulty walking and couldn’t speak at that time. We 40 sat on the floor for our music lessons. We all like a song, which was a call and response song where

I sang the call and the students clapped twice while singing the repeat, "Oh, yes!" We probably 41 that song during every class, Vanessa and I clapping together. She never said or sang a word. One day late in the school year, when the song was finished, Vanessa turned around, looked at me directly

in the eye, clapped her tiny hands twice and 42 the words "Oh, yes!" I opened my mouth 43 and for that moment I was the one who couldn’t speak . Through music, we had made an excellent 44 .

Several years later, I met Vanessa in the street in town. She waved to me with a big smile on her face and then clapped her hands twice, copying the song we had performed so many times. This precious little girl, 45 her connection with music, left a(n) 46 on me that will last forever. Every child has the ability to learn and grow. It is up to us as 47 to discover the way to reach each and every one of our students. We all must find each child’s light.

Three boys and three girls boarded a bus to Lauderdale, Florida, dreaming of golden beaches. When the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice Vingo, who sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit.

Deep into the night, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson Restaurant, and everybody got off except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder perhaps he was a sea captain, a runaway from his wife, an old soldier going home.

Shortly after a snack, they went back to the bus and one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.

After a while, slowly and painfully, he told his story. He had been in prison in New York for the past four years. Last week he was released from imprisonment and now going home.

“When in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said. “I told her that I was going to be away a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, she could just forget me; I’d understand. We used to live in Brunswick, and there’s a big oak tree just as you come into town. Last week, I wrote her again. I told her that if she’d take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I’d get off and come home. If she didn’t want me, forget it and I’d go on through.”

She told the others, and soon all of them were in it, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and crying, doing small dances of joy. The oak tree was covered with yellow handkerchiefs, 20 of them, 30 of them, maybe hundreds, a tree that stood like small flags of welcome flying in the wind. As the young people shouted, Vingo rose and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.

Parents might tell older children to “Act your age”. But some researchers say that is what persons from thirteen to nineteen years old are doing. While teenagers can look all grown up, studies have shown that their brains are still developing. How much this explains their behavior, though, is a subject of debate.

Jay Giedd of America’s National Institutes of Health is a leader in this area of research. Doctor Giedd has been studying a group of young people since 1991. They visit him every two years for imaging tests of their brains. He says considerable development continues in young people from the teenage years into the twenties.

A part of the brain called the dorsal-lateral prefrontal cortex appears especially undeveloped in teenagers. Researchers believe that this area controls judgment and consideration of risk. So, its underdevelopment may explain why young people seem more willing to take risks like driving too fast.

Laurence Steinberg is a psychology professor at Temple University in Philadelphia. He says stronger laws and stronger parental control are needed to protect teens from themselves. That includes raising the age for driving. He says research shows that teenage brains are not fully equipped to control behavior.

Other researchers, however, say there is not enough evidence to make a strong case for such findings. Psychologist Robert Epstein is a visiting scholar at the University of California in San Diego. Mr. Epstein notes that teen behavior differs from culture to culture. He says behavior depends for the most part on socialization. He believes that teenagers will demonstrate(表明) better, safer behavior if they spend more time with adults, and are treated more like them.

But is that always true? Mike Males works at the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice in San Francisco. He suggests that all of this talk lately about brainless teens could be an attempt to take away attention from the reality. Writing in the New York Times, he says it is middle-aged adults whose behavior has worsened. In his words, if grown-ups really have superior brains, why don’t we act as if we do?

61. If your parents ask you to act your age, they really mean to advise that you __________.

A. behave yourself

B. take care of yourself

C. make yourself at home

D. do everything on your own

62. Why do young people seem more willing to take adventures?

A. Because they can all look grown up in that way.

B. Because their dorsal-lateral prefrontal cortex appears undeveloped.

C. Because some researchers have been studying and encouraging them.

D. Because stronger laws and stronger parental control protect them

63. Which of the following is TRUE about teenagers?

A. Their brains have almost stopped developing.

B. Their cultures have influenced their behavior more or less.

C. The behavior of brainless teens has drawn a lot more attention.

D. Staying more often with adults makes things even worse.

64. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that Mike Males _______.

A. agrees with what Robert Epstein says

B. keeps silent about the subject of debate

C. is a leader in this area of research

D. has the opinion of his own

65. The passage is written mainly to tell people that __________.

A. development continues in young people from the teens into the twenties

B. teenagers’ behavior differs from culture to culture

C. there is still a debate between researchers about people’s behaviors

D. the talk about brainless teens could take away attention from governments

Quickly ask yourself What did you eat today? Now tell me how you actually feel. If you’re c omplaining of stress, anxiety, depression, aches and pains, foggy thinking, or just a general lack of energy, a new medical theory will blow your mind. The chances are that those disease-like symptoms are all the result of what’s called hidden food allergies(过敏反应).

This is what en Drew found out when he was lucky enough to be recommended to medical practitioner Dr. Patel. Patel is considered something of a genius, and has been called a modern day Louis Pasteur. You’ve heard of him, of course—Pasteur figured out how to keep milk from getting spoiled. Dr. Patel is like a Louis Pasteur for keeping your body from getting spoiled from chronic(慢性的) diseases.

“Foggy thinking, slightly constipated(便秘的), heart pain,…you name it. It’s part of getting old,” you say. “It’s just stress.” Most of the body’s immune defenses are all located in your stomach, so when you have a hidden food allergy and you expose yourself to harmful foods, your defenses malfunction(故障) and disease-carrying bacteria take over. Had you not eaten that one food you were allergic to for breakfast, you would never have got sick.

Together, Dr Patel and en Drew have developed the Reverse My Disease program, which claims it can bulletproof your body against diseases like arthritis(关节炎), Alzheimer’s, diab etes, heart disease and cancers. Y ou won’t need a prescription and there isn’t any kind of medical procedure involved. There’s no medical jargon, no complicated diet to do. What it does do is claim to tell you how to hack your body’s natural defense system.

Dr. Patel has remained under the radar of the entire medical establishment because his ideas are so threatening to doctors who don’t want you to stop being sick enough for them to write you prescriptions. Those doctor visits cost you, so check out Reverse My Disease if you want to prevent disease by learning how to eat food that won’t harm your body.

66. We can learn from the passage that Louis Pasteur ________.

A. made great contributions to keeping human body from getting spoiled from chronic diseases.

B. has developed the Reverse My Disease program with Dr. Patel.

C. recommended en Drew to Dr. Patel.

D. might be a great scientist who did research on bacteria.

67. According to en Drew and Dr. Patel, people get slightly constipated and have heart pain because

_______.

A. they are getting old.

B. their immune defenses are all located in your stomach.

C. they don’t eat the right food.

D. they are involved in a medical procedure.

68. What does the underlined word “bulletproof” most probably mean?

A. damage

B. defend

C. diagnose

D. demand

69. What can we know from the passage?

A. Once you get sick or depressed, you should go to the doctor for a prescription.

B. Y ou can find a prescription or a complicated diet from the Reverse My Disease program.

C. Exposing yourself to harmful foods causes problems to your defense system.

D. Reverse My Disease program has been well-accepted by doctors.

70. What is the author’s attitude towards Reverse My Disease?

A. Unconcerned.

B. Supportive.

C. Cautious.

D. Negative

Part IV Writing (45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Bora Bora---- The Romantic Island

Simply said, Bora Bora is the most beautiful island in the world. Pora Pora ----the ancient name, meaning “first born”, came from legends describing this as the first island to rise. Although the first letter “B”does not exist in the Tahitian language, when Captain Cook first heard the name he mistook the softened sound of “P” for “B” and called the island Bora Bora.

Bora Bora often reminds people of images of a heaven on earth. For this reason, travelling to Bora Bora is popular with honeymooners and anyone who wishes to be surrounded by amazing beauty. Bora Bora is a destination that is small enough to explore in a few days. However, because of the island’s friendly people and fun activities, you might be willing to extend your plan of Bora Bora journey for weeks.

The landscape consists of a mountainous centre that is completely surrounded by a lagoon(环礁湖,濒海湖),which is then surrounded by a coral reef. These natural features make Bora Bora perfect for diving. The central feature of Bora Bora is Mount Otemanu, a huge rock that stands 2,379 feet tall.

Your Bora Bora vacations won’t be complete if you don’t visit the beaches and lagoons. Perhaps one of the best known features of Bora Bora is its white sand beaches. The most popular beach is Point Matira, located at the southern end of the island. The beach stretches for over two miles and is lined with palm trees.

There is more to do on Bora Bora vacations than lie on the beach. Hiking is an activity that Bora Bora’s 7,000 residents as well as Bora Bora travel enthusiasts, enjoy. If you’re up for a challenge, take the route from Vaitape to the top of Mount Otemanu. If you’re an inexperienced hiker, you might need the help of a guide.

Bora Bora---- The Romantic Island

Directions Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

The disease Ebola is spreading in West Africa. The situation frightens both local citizens and travelers.

There is no vaccine or special treatment. It is difficult to stop Ebola from spreading. It moves easily from person to person. The disease strikes its victims through direct contact with the blood or other fluids from the body of an infected person.

The bodies of victims still contain the virus days after they die. Local traditions and burial and funeral customs also make the sickness hard to control.Doctors say it is important to identify an Ebola case early to prevent others from becoming infected. Patients suffer from high body temperature, bleeding and diarrhea(腹泻).

Only a few prevention measures exist. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. suggest staying away from countries with confirmed Ebola cases. People at increased threat include those working in animal research, health care workers and others caring for patients in the community.

In the past, cases of Ebola have been confirmed in the Republic of the Congo, C?te d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Sudan, and Uganda.

Doctors advise careful protective measures if you must go to an area where Ebola exists.

If Ebola has been identified directly around you, the C.D.C. and W.H.O. strongly suggest wearing protective clothing. Cover your face and hands. Goggles can protect the eyes. Try to remove Ebola germs with cleaners that fight infection.

Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech to day is “Do trust us—a generation born in the 90s”.

Living in an environment full of fierce competition, we, a generation born in the 90s, are faced with more problems in entering higher schools and getting employed. Under these circumstances, we are develo ping our special manners and values, which has raised people’s concern.

They worry we care too much about ourselves and are unwilling to cooperate with others, which makes it hard for us to achieve success in whatever we do. Besides, they consider us as lacking in perseverance, and this is what it takes to do any job well. Without it, we may easily give up in time of difficulty. They are also concerned that we are so eager to win instant fame that we follow fashion blindly, which will in turn ruin our values and future.

However, we, a generation born in the 90s, have our own advantages despite some weaknesses. Firstly, we have the courage to meet challenges and take risks, which helps realize our dreams. In addition, we are quick-minded and creative. We can do our work more efficiently. Of course, we still need to learn more from those experienced. Please do trust us!

Thank you for your listening!
