Dear daughter,

You are a wonderful person and your mother and I think the world of you. It will not be long before you leave home to make your way in the world. Can I please give you some friendly advice? Here are some things that you should never do.

1. Never Look Down Upon Yourself

You are great and able to achieve great things so believe in yourself. When things go badly, never stop believing. Some girls get upset, blame themselves and lose self-esteem (自尊). All kinds of problems can follow.

2. Never Get Obsessed (迷恋) With Your appearance.

We think you look great (though some of the clothes you wear worry us!). Please be happy with the person you are and the body you have. Eat reasonably, take exercise and be healthy. Some girls show too much concern about losing weight or getting the perfect shape. You look fine.

3. Never Forget Your Personal Safety.

Never put yourself at serious risk. This means that you cannot trust people until you really know them and that sometimes you have to avoid things that look like fun. Never get drunk or take drugs. Unluckily there are some bad people out there and it is best not to take risks.

4. Never Give Less Than Your Best.

We are very proud of what you have achieved so far. You should be proud to o. Keep doing well. Keep trying your hardest at everything you do. No one can ask for more than that.

5. Apart form that, please keep in mind that your parents love you.

Whatever happens in life, your family will still be your family. Whatever difficulties you meet with, you can always talk to us and we will try to help. We are here for you.

Researchers found that a “name pronunciation effect” played an important role in how people were perceived (感知) by others. They concluded that the easier a

person’s name was to say, th e better their success was in the workplace and the quicker career advancement (提升) they enjoyed. Their study also found that a simple name improved people’s ability to make new friends.

Dr. Simon Laham, who led the study, said people with simple names were generally judged more positively (积极地). “The effect is not because of the length of a nam e or how foreign-sounding or unusual it is, but rather how easy it is to pronounce,” he said.

In their study the team studied the way names can influence a person’s impressions and decision making. They looked at lots of names of 500 university student volunteers from British, Asian, and European backgrounds and a field of 500 lawyers in America. The team found that people with more pronounceable names were more likely to achieve success. They found that American lawyers with easier sounding names got career advancement faster within their law firms (公司). Names including Sherman, Jenk ins, Benson, and Angus ranked among the easiest to pronounce, while Farquharson and Loughnane and European names such as Leszczynska were found to be difficult to pronounce. They concluded that a simple name was the key to success.

Dr. Laham said the results could have important implications (意义) for how managers dealt with bias(偏见). “It’s important to treat the biases that shape our choices and judgments about others,” he said. “It may help remove bias, leading to fairer, more objective treatment of others.”

5. What factor of a name plays the key role in deciding its effect?

A. The length of the name.

B. The pronunciation of the name.

C. The meaning of the name.

D. Whether the name is unusual or not.

6. The underlined part “pronounceable names” in Para. 3 refers to names that______.

A. can be pronounced without difficulty

B. can’t be pronounced easily

C. sound like foreign names

D. can be spelled easily

7. Which of the following would Dr. Laham most probably agree with?

A. People should use simple names to avoid biases.

B. Foreign names are considered to be hard to pronounce.

C. The name effect can be found only in English-speaking countries.

D. The study can help people treat those with hard-to-say names more fairly.

8. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Having an easy-to-say name will help you get quicker career advancement.

B. People with hard-to-say names should struggle for fairer treatment.

C. People with hard-to-say names should avoid unfair treatment from others.

D. The importance of changing hard-to-say names to easy-to-say ones.

A While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who, and different relationships between their classmates, I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports. When I was young, my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with the title of boyfriend. It's indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex(异性). In my opinion, even though some high school relationship might continue after graduation, the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim (微小的) that there really is not a point to it. Firstly you have to think about such a question----whether it is possible to hurt both of you, or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date(约会) if you hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic (浪漫的). While these are nice to have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives. The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly advise we should deal with it in a proper way and follow our teachers’ advice if necessary. 21. The author writes this passage probably for_ to read. A. high school students B. school teachers C. parents and teachers D. married couples 22. Between the opposite sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be__ than that of being boy/girl friends. A. weaker B. safer C. slimmer D. stronger 23. How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students? A. Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic. B. Studying is far more important than dating in school C. In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage D. Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family 24. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph might refer to_ . A. the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school B. advice given by both teachers and parents C. the pressure from school lessons and sports D. the relationship between students of opposite sexes B “Let’s go Dutch, shall we?” Jim said after a dinner to his friends in a restaurant. What does Jim mean? Long ago, there was a kind of dinner called Dutch treat. At a Dutch treat, the invited guests were expected to pay for their own share of the food and drink. Now, Dutch treat means when friends go out to have fun, each person pays his or her own share. There are many other expressions related with “Dutch” in American English. However, most of them were first used in England in the 17th century. At that time, the British and the Dutch were war enemies. So when British people talked about something wrong or bad, they would like to use the word “Dutch”. A common expression heard a few years ago was in Dutch. A friend may tell you, “You are in Dutch.
