IV. Reading Comprehension (35%)

(A)

Every reader of this passage must spend the whole of his waking life looking at things. Looking, like breathing, is natural; we do it without noticing it. Looking is passive—but seeing is active. Once you start seeing things you really begin to wake up. People who see things which others have only looked at, and draw conclusions from what they see, can add to man’s knowledge and help progress.

Someone recently discovered a place where metal had been worked continuously longer than any where else in England. He ―saw‖ a wall in the Forest of Dean. Thousands of people must have looked at it without really seeing it, but this man noticed that among the usual stones of that place were bits and pieces of a different color; they also felt different to the hand. A closer sight showed that these pieces had been left behind in the fires of ancient people who had melted rocks to get metals. Looking around, he found more and more information, until the history of what men had done at that place over tens of centuries was known.

In 1789 the U.S. government passed a law which said that the land of the American Indians could never be taken from them without their agreement. One hundred years later, however, the Indians only had a very small part of the land that originally belonged to them. How did this great injustice (不公正) occur?

After 1812 white settlers began to move west across North America. At first, the settlers and

the Indians lived in peace. However, the number of settlers increased greatly every year, and slowly the Indians began to see the white settlers as a danger to their survival. To feed themselves, the settlers killed more and more wild animals. The Indians, who depended on these animals for food, had to struggle against starvation. The settlers also brought with them many diseases which were common in white society, but which were new for the Indians. Great numbers of Indians became sick and died. Between 1843 and 1854 the Indian population in one area of the country went down from 100,000 to 30,000.

More land was needed for the increasing number of white settlers. In Washington, the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared. The old promises to the Indians were broken; the government began to move groups of Indians from their original homelands to other poorer parts of the country. Some Indians reacted angrily and violently to this treatment. They began to attack white settlers, and the Indian war began. For 30 years, until the late 1880s, different groups of Indians fought against the injustices of the white man. They had a few famous successes, but the result of the struggle was never in doubt. There were too many white soldiers, and they were too powerful. Many Indians were killed; the survivors were moved from their homelands to different areas of the country. It was a terrible chapter in the history of a country that promised freedom and equality to everyone.

out

nature.

nineteenth century.

C.Between 1843 and 1854 about 70,000 Indians were killed in the battle.

D.The whites carried serious diseases into where the Indians lived.

75. It is implied in the passage that _________.

A.the Indians had many great successes in the Indians wars

B.the Indians had no doubt that they would win the wars

C.after the war the Indians stayed where they were before

D.the Indians were too weak to win the struggle

76. What is the writer’s opinion about the treatment that the Indians received from the U.S. government?

A.He believed that the government always respected the rights of the Indians.

B.He believed that the government can’t be criticized for its treatment to theIndians.

Do you want to watch a hot movie while chatting with your friend on the phone, or shop with your mobile while on a train? The ongoing construction of a new telecommunication service will make these things reality, very soon.

It is reported that China is to issue its first licence for the commercial use of third generation telecommunication technology early next year.

The so-called 3G technology will enable mobile phone users to enjoy high-speed Internet-based services. It will help increase mobility in many areas of our life.

Nowadays, many mobile phones also allow you to send e-mails or read the latest stories on the Internet, but their services are limited by their transporting speed, which is only 10 kilobytes per second. But 3G will enable you to connect to the Internet with a speed of up to 2 megabytes per second, a thousand times faster than what you use now.

If recent mobile technology is like riding a bike on a country road, then 3G will make you fly on the information highway. For example, a mobile phone with 3G technology will enable you to download a three minutes’ MP3 song within two minutes. But at the moment, it will take you up to an hour to do this with your mobile phone.

In the near future, we’ll expect high-speed access to the Internet, entertainment, information and electronic commerce services wherever we are – not just at our computers or television sets.

In the UK and many other European countries where 3G services have been around since 2003, 3G has already become a part of modern business life. Nowadays, employees are able to spend some of their working hours at home. The new technology allows the emergency services to provide a video link with a hospital or doctor for patients who need special care.

77. What are the strength of the so-called 3G technology?

A. It enables mobile phone users to enjoy Internet-based services

B. It can enable you to download MP3songs.

C. A 3G mobile phone can transport information much faster than what we use now.

D. 3G technology will offer you high-speed access to the Internet wherever there is a computer.

78. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A. It is impossible for us to listen to MP3 music with our current mobile phone.

B. Thanks to 3G phones, European employees needn’t always travel to work .

C. 3G mobile phone enables you to watch a hot movie while chatting.

D. The new technology allows a doctor to examine a patient through a video link.

79. Which sentence can best describe the picture?

A. 3G will make you fly on the information highway.

B. 3G will help increase mobility in many areas of our lives.

C. 3G has already become a part of modern business.

D. 3G will enable you connect to the internet with a speed of 2 megabytes per second.

Self-confidence is of great importance to us. We can achieve nothing without it.

Madam Curie once said, ―Life is not easy for any one of us. We must work, and above all we must believe in ourselves.‖ With self-confidence supporting her, Madam Curie discovered the element radium and made great contributions to the world. And this is true of many other scientists.

However, in our daily life there are many people who often complain that they lack the ability to do things well, but as a matter of fact, what they lack most is self-confidence. So anyone, no matter what he does, should have faith in himself. Only by having the rig ht attitude towards one’s own ability and holding up faith in himself can he have the courage to work on and finally succeed.

A It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. 36.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Lady, are you rich? B.A story of Thanksgiving Day C.Don't forget how rich you are D.Does cups and saucers match well? 37.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.The girl thought the writer was rich just because she wanted to make the writer happy. B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive. C.If cups and saucers match well, they are a best pair even though cheap.

For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. (A) Once just a science fiction idea, VR has now become more accessible than ever. (25) _________ (wear) a pair of VR goggles connected to your computer and you can experience a lot of things without stepping out of the room. From climbing (26) _________ (high) mountain in the world to flying a spacecraft, the things you can experience with VR are limitless. This new 'reality ' is starting to takeover China. The Report on Chinese VR Users' Behavior was released on March 18 during the 12th TFC Global Mobile Game Conference & Intelligent Entertainment Expo held in Beijing. The report is based on a survey of 5,626 people, (27) _________ (age) between 15 and 39, from across the country. It shows that up to 68.5 percent of people have heard of or are interested in VR products. But surprisingly, it isn't new technology that has made VR so popular. 'VR has been (28) _________ for many years, but it will stick this time because there's enough computer power and the price will just keep going down,' Todd Richmond, a VR group member with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in the US, told USA Today. VR (29) _________ (expect) to change various different fields. For example, VR could be used to train pilots and miners before they had to actually risk their lives in highly dangerous working environments, or to treat patients with acrophobia(恐高症)by making them think they were standing on top of a high building. 'If you have perfect virtual reality, (30) _________ you'll be able to simulate everything that a human can experience or imagine experiencing,it's hard to imagine where you go from there,' Palmer Luckey, 23 inventor of the Oculus VR goggles, told NPR. But the technology is still far from perfect. Users report experiencing motion sickness, headaches and other discomfort while wearing VR goggles. Also, (31) _________ more and more tools are flooding the market, the software that runs VR games and simulators has yet to catch up with all the new advancements. It could take (32) _________ while for VR to be widely accepted. When every new technology is first introduced, the technology (33) _________ is the driving force. But for it to really blend into people's lives, meeting basic and practical needs should be the main aim. (B) It has become the talk of the town: A stranger allegedly attacked a woman in a Beijing hotel at night on April 3. The man is said to have clutched her by the neck and attempted to drag her into the elevator. Lodgers passed by, but no one tried to intervene until one woman did. Her actions are believed to (34) _________ (save) the victim from whatever was going to happen to her. The incident has pushed the risks of solo traveling into the spotlight. Online forums like Sina Weibo (35) _________ (flood) with advice for how women (36) _________ protect themselves

2019届上海市各高中名校高三英语题型分类专题汇编--阅读理解B篇--老师版(带答案已校对珍藏版)

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
