School life in the UK

Going to a British high school for one year(1)was a very enjoyable and exciting experience(2)or me. I was very happy with(3)the school hours in Britain because school starts(4)around 9 a.m. and ends(6)about 3:30 p.m. This means(6)I could get up an hour later than usual(7)as schools in China begin before 8 a.m.

On(8)the first day, all students went to attend (9) assembly. I sat next to a girl whose name was Diane. We soon became best friends. During assembly, the headmaster told us about the rules of the school. He also told us that the best way to (10) earn respect(11)from the school was to work hard and achieve(12)high grades. This sounded like (13)my school in China.

I had many teachers in the past year and they each taught only one subject. Mr. Heywood was my class teacher. My favorite teacher was Miss Burke. She was the teacher who taught us English Literature. In our class there were 29 students. This is about the average (14) size for British schools. We had to move to different classrooms for different classes. We also had different students in some classes, so it (15) was difficult to remember all the faces and names.

I found the homework was not as heavy as what (16) I used to (17)get in my old school, but it was

a bit (18) challenging (19) for me at first because all the homework was in English. I felt lucky as all my teachers were very helpful and I enjoyed all my subjects: English, History, English Literature, Computer Science, Maths, Science, PE, Art, Cooking and French.

My English improved (20) a lot as I used English every day and spend (21)an hour each day reading English books in the library. I usually went to the Computer Club at lunchtime, so I could e-mail my family and friends back home for free. I also had an extra (22) French class on Tuesday evenings. Cooking was really fun as I learned how to (23) buy, prepare (24) and cook food. At the end of term we held a class party and we all had to cook something. I was glad that all my classmates enjoyed the cake that I made.

Students at school have to study Maths, English and Science, but can drop (25) some subjects if they don’t like them, for example (26) , History, French and Art. They can choose other subjects like Woodwork, Computer Science or Languages such as Spanish and German. In woodwork class I made a small table. Though (27) it didn’t look like a table when it was finished, I still liked it very much.

I missed(28) Chinese food a lot at lunchtime. British food is very different. British people eat a lot of desserts after their main meal. After lunch, we usually played on the school field. Sometimes (29) I played football with the boys. Sometimes I just relaxed under a tree or sat on the glass.

I was very lucky to experience this different way of life. And I really hope (30) that someday I can go back and study in Manchester again.

Project Starting a new school club

We have a radio club in our school. It is great because it is run (1) by the students for the school. I am lucky as I am one of the hosts.

It was started two years ago as CD players were not allowed (2) in school. One day, I just began thinking about music for everyone, so I asked the headmaster if music could be played during break time. He approved (3) the idea, and two years later I am the oldest student member of the radio club.

Our club is much more than just music. Every morning we tell students about the weather and recent news, plus some special messages that the teachers want us to broadcast.

During exam time we have a special programme that tells the students the things they should or shouldn’t do for preparati on. At the end of the school year, many students who are graduating use our club to give messages to their close friends and teachers.

When parents come to visit the school and talk to the teachers in the evening, we always play songs sung by students, and we also give special messages to inform the parents of events such as outing and school plays.

I am graduating soon, I shall miss the radio club, but I know that it will continue without me. (Kate Jones)

Our school club ‘Poets of the Next Generation’ was started by our English teacher Mr Owen. We meet on the last Friday of every month to talk about poems and poets that we like. When we meet,

we first select (4) poems that we love, and then read them out loud. We do this in a group and listen to each other talking about poems in our group meetings.

When I attended the first meeting, I was required (5) to write a poem and I have to read it out to the group. It was a little scary at first, but everyone was so nice and friendly that (6) I soon stopped worrying. I once read a poem about nature in our school garden. I choose an old tree and circled everyone around it before I read. The group said it was one of the best poems they had heard. ( Bob Shaw)

Unit 2

Home alone

Act one

Mom and Dad arrive back from vacation a day earlier than expected. The curtains are closed and the living room is dark when Morn and Dad enter.

Dad: It's so nice to be home!

Mom: Yes, I can't wait to surprise the boys!

Suddenly a door opens and a soccer ball flies through the room. Eric runs in after it, followed by a big dog, walking very slowly,

Eric: Mom! Dad! You're back early! (looking around room, sounding frightened ) But, but ... you weren't supposed to come home until tomorrow!

The dog slowly walks to Mom and Dad.

Mom: (bending to touch dog) Eric, he's so tired and hungry! (looking at table) The money with which you were to buy dog food is gone, but Spot looks so hungry! What did you do with the money we left?

Dad: And look at this room--trash all over the place! Where is your brother? (shouting angrily) Daniel!

Daniel: (running into room) Morn, Dad, I can explain ...

Dad opens the curtains and light comes into the room. The room is a mess, with pizza boxes on the floor and dirty dishes in the sink. There are pieces of garbage and waste paper around the trash can.

Morn and Dad both turn towards Daniel.

Dad: (sounding very angry) Listen to me young man--remember the day when we left you in charge? We thought you could act like an adult! I don't know the reason why the house is so

dirty ...

Morn: Daniel, we thought you were an adult, a person from whom we could expect good decisions ...

Dad: Whom we could trust! This is not a family where bad behavior goes unpunished and you ...

Daniel: (shouting) Stop shouting at me. I'm still a teenager! Why is everything always my fault?

Daniel runs into his bedroom and slams the door: Morn and Dad look at each other as lights go out.

End of act one

Act two, scene one

Daniel and Eric's bedroom. Eric sits on his bed looking at Daniel, who has his arms crossed and looks angry.

Daniel: They never even gave me a chance to explain, I hate them!

Eric: You don't hate them. I can tell them what happened. Then they won't be mad anymore.

Daniel: No, don't tell them anything. They didn't trust me. They don't deserve to know the truth. Let them think what they want.

Eric: But Daniel, if they knew that Spot was ill and we used the money to take him to the vet ...

Daniel: And that we spent all of yesterday waiting there for him and that is why we had no time to clean the house ... but no Eric, why didn't they ask me what happened instead of shouting at me?

Act two, scene two

Mom: Do you think we were too hard on Daniel? Perhaps something happened ... maybe we should go and ask him.

Dad: Maybe, but now that he has been so rude to us, I feel like we have to punish him or he

won't respect us.

Mom: Oh, why does this have to be so difficult?

End of act two

Project Writing an advice letter

Many people in families become upset with each other over small problems. Small problems can become big ones, however, if they are not discussed and dealt with early on. What would you do if you were an advice columnist and received the following letters?

Dear Mr. Zhu,

I am Writing to your magazine's 'Teenagers Now' column to ask for some help with

my16-year-old son. At the moment, he refuses to do almost everything his mother and I ask him to do. He is our only child and we treat him very well. His grandparents buy him many things, and

yet he is still rude to us. He refuses to spend time with us or do as we tell him. Sometimes he acts as though he doesn't even love us at all.

Recently he has been refusing to do his homework, and instead insists on wasting his time watching DVDs and listening to foreign music. I cannot understand this music, but I don't like it. He also spends too much time in Internet cafes, where he either plays games or chats online. He is wasting valuable time during this important period in his life!

What am I to do? At present, to prevent upsetting his mother with an argument, I am allowing him his freedom. However, I am worried that if I keep allowing him to do what he wants, he may fail at school, or worse.

How can I help my son without harming our relationship?

Yours sincerely,

Zhenhua

Dear Mr. Zhu,

I read your magazine every month and I love your 'Teenagers Now' column. I myself am a teenager, almost 17, and have some problems at home that I hope you can help me with.

Mainly, the problem is my father. Whenever I want to do something or suggest an idea, such as a restaurant we can go to for dinner, he doesn't listen to me. Whenever I try to talk to him he just shouts at me. When I refuse to listen to him, he shouts at me and the two of us fight like crazy.

He and my mother always make me do things I don't like such as playing the piano and learning Japanese. Then, when I have some spare time and want to be alone, they call me selfish and unloving!

My father gets very angry when I play foreign music. Also, every time I watch a DVD he sends me to bed or tells me to spend more time studying. He has even forbidden me from meeting my friends online at the Internet cafes!

I love him a lot, but I don't understand why he will not respect the things I want to do. He was once a teenager--he should understand me better than he does.

Yours truly,

Liu We/

Dear Zhou Ling,

Things change so quickly! l’m now in hospital recovering from liver failure. I regret taking those weight-loss pills. They contain a harmful chemical that caused my liver to fail. The doctor told me that 1 would die if I couldn't get a new liver. My mother is too old for such a long operation.I thought I was going to die.

Then the doctor found that someone in your country, whose name is Li Dong, was an exact match for me.he donated more than half of his liver to save my life.I was very lucky, wasn't I?

I’m feeling better now.I follow my doctor's advice and exercise for at least half an hour every day (but I seldom go to the gym!), and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. People should look after their bodies. My mother is right:don't damage your health for a slim and attractive figure. It isn't worth it.We shouldn't be ashamed of the way we look, should we?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Love,

Amy

Dear Amy,

My computer was broken so I couldn't read your two e-mails until today.I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. But I’m glad you're feeling better and are recovering.I'm amazed that in China someone's liver matched yours! This is really a touching story --- a stranger who donated part of his liver to a girl he doesn't even know !

You're right. We shouldn't be embarrassed about our weight.I think you look great as you are,and you're a wonderful person.I know that the pressure to stay slim is a problem, especially for an actress. However, your mother knows best:nothing is more important than health.

It's the same in China---many people, some of whom are not overweight at all,are always going on diets or taking weight-loss pills, which are often dangerous I hope they can learn from your story.

Love,

Zhou Ling

Project

The truth is,the diet and lifestyle of teenagers are often a headache to adults. But, the good news is that you can feel better, look better and have more energy if you eat the right food and exercise regularly.

Healthy eating along with regular exercise is the only way to become fit.Diets just don’t work in the long term, yet 19% of the teenagers say they have tried dieting and skipping meals to

control their weight! If you take in the correct number of calories and exercise regularly, you will lose weight, keep fit,and feel great.

During your teenage years, it is important to give your body the energy it needs. If you skip meals, you don't get enough calories, and then you feel tired.By the way, ‘calorie’ is just another word for energy.Teenage girls need about 2,200 calories a day and boys need a bit more---doctors suggest 2,800 for teenage boys.50%of your calories should come from rice, bread, vegetables and fruit. You also need to drink a lot of water, 6 to 8 glasses a day.Water helps keep your system clean.Drinking enough water will improve your skin and give you healthy hair.

Exercise is something that can help to make you look good, feel good and be healthy.Experts suggest that teenagers spend at least 30 minutes exercising, five times a week. That is easy to do! Walking and riding your bike count, and so do school sports.Often, teenagers give up on sport, saying they have no time left after their studies. Many teenagers are surprised to learn that when you exercise, your body produces some chemicals that make you feel relaxed and increase your ability to concentrate when you study. These chemicals can even help you sleep better at night!

A good amount of sleep every night is also important for your health. When you sleep, your body prepares you for the day to come.Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. As a matter of fact, loss of sleep can make you look tired, and even cause you to put on weight.

If you follow the suggestions above, you will look and feel much better in no time at all!

Unit 1 Reading

Boy missing, police puzzled

Police in America have stepped up their search for a fifteen-year-old boy who went missing three days ago in Dover, New Hampshire. This interest has received great interest due to reports of alie n visit around the time the boy disappointed.

Justin Foster, a high school student, was last seen Friday night. That evening at 8p.m.,Justin went to play baseball with two friends, who both say Justin went home after the game。Witnesses also say they saw Justin walking towards his house at 10.45p.m.Justin’s sister, Kelly, ag ed nine, says she heard her brother return home at about 11p.m.

‘I was getting ready for bed ’Kelly said. ‘Justin went straight to his room. I didn't see him, but I h eard him put on his favorite CD. I went to bed, and was woken up around midnight by a bright lig ht outside my window.’

At first, the young girl thought it was the light of the full moon, but then she realized that it was moving and coming closer.

‘I pulled back the curtains and saw a large spaceship flying outside. It had blue lights all around i t, and there were many windows. Standing inside were lots of strange creatures with white skin an d large black eyes. I was frightened! ’

Kelly said that the spaceship then moved around to the side of the house, towards her brother’s b edroom. ‘There was a flash of light and I heard Justin shout, and then the UFO just disappeared. I haven't seen Justin since. I'm sure the aliens took him. ’ Kelly then ran and woke up her mother. However, since Mrs. Foster thought that Justin was spending the night with a friend, she assumed t hat Kelly was having a bad dream, and sent her back to bed. Mr. Foster was working that night on his road construction job, and was not home when these events occurred. When Justin did not sho w up for lunch the next day, Mrs. Foster became worried and told her husband to call the police. Some people in Dover also say that they saw aliens that night. ‘It’s happened to me! ‘said Mrs. M avis Wood. ‘The aliens took me aboard the UFO so that they could do research on me. Luckily, the y retuned me home without any injuries. The whole experience was terrible! I haven't been sleepin g well since I returned home. I think Justin was taken away by them, too. ’

When asked about the possibility that Justin was taken by aliens, Detective Sam Peterson, who h as taken charge of the case, told journalists, ‘Sometimes people make up such amazing stories. Th ere's really no hard evidence that aliens took him. So, while we have not dismissed the idea, we ar e looking into other possibilities as well.

Unit 1 Reading The Amazon rainforest: a natural treasure Welcome to the jungle, a huge sea of green alive with the sounds of animals. This is the Amazon rainforest. As the largest rainforest in the world, it plays a significant role in maintaining the fine balance of the Earth's ecosystem. The Amazon rainforest crosses into eight countries, including Brazil and Peru, and one overseas region of France, all on the South American continent. With an area of around 6 million square kilometres , the Amazon rainforest is more than half the size of China. The Amazon River, from which the rainforest gets its name, is close to 6,400 kilometres in length-roughly 100 kilometres longer than the Yangtze River. On its journey from the mountains to the ocean, the river supports many different ecosystems. They give this area the richest biodiversity on the Earth: one in ten known species in the world can be found here. Of the 390,000 plant species known to us, more than 40,000 can be found in the Amazon. This tall and ancient brazil nut tree produces nuts that we can eat; these water lilies are big enough to lie down on. The forest's different levels support an unbelievable variety of wildlife. At the bottom, there is a system of roots beneath the ground. Above that is the mass of leaf litter on the dark forest floor. The nextlevel is made up of shorter plants with large leaves. Then there are the towering ancient hardwoods, and finally the tops of the tallest trees many metres above the ground. Each level of the forest forms its own little world, home to different kinds of living things. More than 1,300 species of birds and over 400 species of mammals hide among the jungle's plant life. This jaguar is one example. It has a yellowish-brown coat with black spots. While a significant number of jaguars survive here, they are only one on at least 87 species, including frogs. These frogs, in turn, feed on insects which eat leaves and fruit. When a jaguar dies, a tiny army of microorganisms helps break down its body and return the nutrients to the earth.

新牛津译林版选修三unit1 Reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The 7 Habits—An Overview We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.—Aristotle Our character, basically,is a composite of our habits.“Sow a thought, reap an action;sow an action, reap a habit;sow a habit, reap a character;sow a character, reap a destiny,”the maxim goes. Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness... or ineffectiveness. As Horace Mann, the great educator, once said, “Habits are like a cable. We weave a strand of it every day and soon it cannot be broken.” I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression.I know they can be broken. Habits can be learned and unlearned. But I also know it isn't a quick fix.It involves a process and a tremendous commitment. Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo ll were transfixed as we saw the first men walk on the moon and return to earth.Superlatives such as “fantastic” and “incredible” were inadequate to describe those eventful days. But to get there, those astronauts literally had to break out of the tremendous gravity pull of the earth.More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half a million miles. Habits, too, have tremendous gravity pull—more than most people realize or would admit. Breaking deeply imbedded habitual tendencies such as procrastination, impatience, criticalness, or selfishness that violate basic principles of human effectiveness involves more than a little willpower and a few minor changes in our lives.“Lift-off”takes a tremendous effort, but once we break out of the gravity pull, our freedom takes on a whole new dimension. Like any natural force, the gravity pull can work with us or against us. The gravity pull of some of our habits may currently be keeping us from going where we want to go.But it is also the gravity pull that keeps our world together, that keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force, and if we use it effectively, we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the cohesiveness and order
