Before Alaska became part of the U.S., it had been owned by Russia. Trading posts and small settlements were scattered along the coast. The rest of land was left unexplored. The Russians were mainly interested in the wealth of furs from the vast herds of seals they found there.

By the mid-1800’s, most of the seal herds had been wiped out, and Russia no longer wanted to keep Alaska. William Seward, Secretary of State for President Johnson, believed the United States should buy Alaska from Russia. President Johnson wasn’t so sure it was a wise way to spend U.S. money, but he agreed to let Seward discuss it with the Russians. Acting quickly, Seward made a deal. On March 30, 1867, he signed an agreement for the U.S. to pay seven million dollars for the land.

Many people thought it was a foolish waste of America’s money. They called the deal “Seward’s folly”. Then gold was discovered in Alaska and public o pinion changed quickly.

Seward did not live to see the true value of Alaska. He died in 1872, five years after making the purchase (购买). Each year, Alaska’s natural resources have brought in many times the $7,000,000 paid for it. Natural gas, coal, oil, lumber, seafood and other minerals, besides the gold first found, have made it a valuable addition to the United States. In 1959, Alaska became the 49th state of the United States.

How long you live has a lot to do with your environment and lifestyle, but exceptional(特别的)long life may have even more to do with your genes. For the first time, researchers have discovered a genetic recipe(基因谱)that accurately predicts who may live to 100 and beyond. Analysis shows that 90% of the participants who lived to 100 had at least one of the signature genetic clusters(标志基因组). Dr. Thomas Perls at the Boston University School of Medicine said, “We realize this is a complex genetic puzzle. There is a long way for us to go to understand how the integration(融合)of these genes—not just with themselves but with environmental factors—is playing a role in this long life puzzle.”

Perls has studied many factors that contribute to long life, and he is the first to acknowledge that living longer isn’t likely to be simply a matter of genes. His pre vious work has shown, for example, that among most elderly people who live into their 70s and 80s, about 70% can owe their long life to environmental factors such as not smoking; eating a healthy, low-fat, low-calorie diet; and remaining socially engaged and mentally active throughout life.

It seems clear that those who live extremely long are benefiting from a special DNA. In fact, Perls believes that the older a person gets, the more likely it is that his or her genes are contributing to those extended years.

60. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 2?

A. Most long-living people have special long-life-related genes.

B. Ninety percent of the participants lived to 100 years of age.

C. All the long-living people have only one signature genetic cluster.

D. Scientists know how the integration of the genes helps people live long.

61. Perls may most likely agree that .

A. most people living extremely long benefit from not smoking

B. living longer just depends on certain genetic recipes

C. environmental factors play an important role in long-living

D. being mentally active has nothing to do with living an old age

62. Which of the following is FALSE according to the text?

A. Remaining socially engaged helps a person to live long.

B. A genetic recipe can accurately predict who may live to 100 and beyond.

C. Perls is the first to think living longer is just a matter of genes.

D. The older he gets, the more likely the genes contribute to his extended years.

63. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Genes May Predict Who Lives to 100

B. Environment And Genes

C. Genes, the Secret of Long Living

D. Lifestyle And Genes

New technology links the world as never before. Our planet has shrunk. It’s now a “global village” where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communications equipment is greatly increased by foreign language skills.

Deeply involved with this new technology is a kind of modern businesspeople who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support domestic business efforts.

Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks.

The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being “out of sight and out of mind.” He or she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company’s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his or her ability to manage back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language issues are becoming more and more common.

Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets. English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn’t generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal.

The employee posted abroad who speaks the country’s language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negotiations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. The employee at the home office who can communicate well with foreign customers over the telephone or by fax machine is an obvious asset to the firm.

64. With the increased use of high-tech communications equipment, businesspeople ________.

A. are eager to work overseas

B. have to get familiar with modern technology

C. are gaining more economic benefits from domestic operations

D. are attaching more importance to their overseas business

65. According to the passage, what is an important consideration of international corporations in employing people today?

A. Ability to speak the customer’s language.

B. Connections with businesses overseas.

C. Technical know-how.

D. Business experience.

66. The advantage of employees having foreign language skills is that they can ________.

A. fast-forward their proposals to headquarters

B. better control the whole negotiation process

C. easily make friends with businesspeople abroad

D. easily find new approaches to meet market needs

D

While waiting to pick up a friend at an airport in Portland,Oregon,I had one of those life-changing experiences that you hear other people talk about-the kind that happens to youunexpectedly. To me,this happened and was only two feet away from me.

Locating my friend among the passengers,I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.

First he walked to his youngest son (maybe 6 years old)as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug.As they separated enough to look in each other's face,I heard the father say,“It's so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!”His son smiled somewhat shyly, and replied softly,"Me,too,Dad!”

Then the man stood up,gazed in to the eyes of his oldest son(maybe 9 or 10)and while cupping his son's face in his hands said,“You're alre ady quite a young man. I love you very much,Zach!” They too hugged a most loving, tender hug.

While this was happening,a baby girl(perhaps one or one-and-a-half-year old)was squirming (扭动)excitedly in her mother's arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said,“Hi .baby girl!”as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking

her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.

After several moments,he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared,“I've saved the best for last!”and went to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed.“I love you so much!”They stared into each other's eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands,

For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn't possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally attentive I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm's length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable,as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask,"Wow!How long have you two been married?”

"Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.”he replied, without breaking his gaze froth his lovely wife's face. "Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me,still beaming his joyous smile.“Two whole days!”

Two days?I was stunned.I had assumed he'd been gone for at least several weeks-if not months.I know my expression betrayed me.“I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!” The man suddenly stopped smiling.

He looked me straight in the eye,and with forcefulness that burned right into my soul,he told me something that left me a different person,“Don't hope, friend…decide!” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said,"God bless!”

With that,he and his family turned and walked away together. I was still watching that exceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked,“What are you looking at?”Without hesitating, and with a curious sense of certainty,

I replied,"My future!”

67. Which word could best describe the baby girl?

A. Quiet.

B. Innocent.

C. Naughty.

A. The family became the writer's friends.

B. The writer decided to look for a wife.

C. The writer's family will get more love from him.

D. The writer will tell his friend the story immediately they meet.

69.Which paragraph in this story best shows the love of the couple?

A. Paragraph 4.

B. Paragraph 5.

C. Paragraph 6.

D. Paragraph 7.

70. Why does the writer think his airport experience is life-changing?

A. Because he came across a most loving family.

C. Because he thought it was really a unique experience.

D. Because the family he met with had a strange power over him.

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Get over self-consciousness

Ever got stressed out because you weren’t sure what you’d say at that morning meeting?Worried about what you’d look like after squeezing into last year's bathing suit?Uneasy to speak to a stranger in the street when you wanted to ask the way?Afraid of making a mistake in class? All these show that you are self-conscious.

Self-consciousness--the action of easily feeling nervous in public because of shyness-keeps us fighting the battle to control our self-image.But always worrying about our shortcomings, unavoidably traps us in embarrassment and shame. You feel that you are a loser or a failure, unsuccessful at your career or in your life.

The difference between embarrassment and shame is slight but significant, and the distinction is extremely important for building a protective covering of self-respect.When we introduce one of our friends to a colleague and forget his or her name,it's an embarrassing blow to our image, because we think others are viewing us in a negative light. If there are enough embarrassing moments,we begin viewing ourselves badly, then our self-image breaks down and we feel that heavy weight of shame.

Creating a strong support of success in our lives is one way to end the terrible trap of embarrassment and shame.Successfully completing a difficult project at work builds confidence and leads to future success.Similarly,a satisfying relationship is a prideful accomplishment and helps motivate us to seek other such connections, and make us feel unembarrassed and unashamed and, even feel successful.

But how do we take that first brave step away from self-consciousness in order to feel like (and at last become)a success?Kill the situations that will lead to shame before they become a threat, advises David Allyn,Ph.D.,a Harvard-trained social scientist and visiting scholar at Columbia University’s Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy. His book,1 Can't Believe 1 .lust Bid That, includes a few pointers:

Be on time. Punctuality creates self-discipline and impresses both others and yourself. It’sa healthy habit that keeps you calm about the clock.

Stick to the facts. You’re bound to get caught lying,so why bother?Lies just set you up with unnecessary opportunities to feel ashamed.

Cut the gossip. Comments made behind your back hurt and make you angry, and don't forget how you feel about those who talked about you.Don't get involved in any meaningless talk where chances to realize a dream or accomplish an aim might be missed.

Keep your word.It feels good to be considered reliable,so honor your word no matter what the reasons are for disregarding them.Remember,a promise is a promise.

Recover gracefully(优雅地)to avoid the feeling of shame. If the damage is already done and you find yourself at the tail end of an embarrassing situation, you can still avoid that feeling of shame by recovering gracefully.Don’t attack in defense or lie to cover your tracks-you’11 just end up feeling worse and likely complicate a relationship that doesn't need complicating.Try laughing it off or explaining why you made the mistake. Also, don't leave a social situation simply to avoid the people you made a mishap(小事故;小错误)in front of-avoidance will leave you feeling further ashamed and separated from others.

Remember:people tend to forget others’ mistakes and worry about their own.

高三英语周练1

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A. In New Mexico. B. In the Caribbean. C. In Australia. D. In China.

高三英语下学期周练试题复习班

河北省定州市2017届高三英语下学期周练试题(复习班,4.9) 一、阅读理解 As has been all too apparent in recent days at Balcombe, few issues cause greater concern than energy policy. Many village communities feel their countryside is being ruined by the power-producing machines of wind farms; yet they never take "direct action", even though the planning laws put them at a severe disadvantage. And the generous subsidies (财政补贴) , which encourage the expansion of wind power, are not favorable to the village communities and set landowners in conflict with other residents (居民) . Those who disagree with the rapid expansion of wind farms state that the damage they cause is out of proportion(比例) to the benefits they bring, because their energy output cannot match that of the carbon-based power stations they are supposed to replace. Supporters insist that wind must be part of a mix of renewables, nuclear and carbon, and that the country is committed to meeting EU ( European Union) targets for non-carbon energy generation. Against this background, the fact that there is an argument within the Government over whether to publish an official report on wind farms' impact on the countryside becomes even more extraordinary. The two parties in the coalition (联合) government are in disagreement over what it should say. We have some advice for the two parties: publish the report, and let the country be the judge. Even if it contains evidence that wind farms are harmful, it will hardly be a pleasant surprise to people who do not like them. Equally, supporters must argue their case by acknowledging the concerns and explaining why they are either misplaced or worthy of much attention. The suggestion that further negotiations are to take place to produce an "acceptable" report suggests that the politics of coalition government are doing the country harm in a certain way. Given the sensitivities involved, all the information should be available so that people can reach their own conclusions, rather than being left with the suspicion (猜疑)that facts are being replaced by political beliefs.
