Although man has known asbestos(石棉) for many hundreds of years, it was not until 160 years ago that it was mined for the first time on the North American continent. H. W. Johns, owner of a New York City Supply Shop for roofers(盖屋顶的人), was responsible for(对…负责) the

opening of that first mine.

Mr. Johns was given a piece of asbestos which had been found in Italy. He experimented with the material and then showed its surprising powers to his customers. After putting on a pair of asbestos gloves, which looked much like ordinary work gloves, he took red-hot coals from the fireplace and played with them in his hands. How astonished the customers were to discover that he was not burned at all. You can well imagine that he had increasing business in asbestos roofing materials. However, because it was very expensive to transport (carry) them from Italy to the United States, Mr. Johns sent out a young scientist to seek a source nearer home. This young man

found great vein(岩脉), in the province of Quebec in Canada.

Ever since 1881 Quebec has led the world in the production of this unusual mineral, which is made up of magnesium, silicon, iron, and oxygen. When it is mined, the asbestos is heavy, just as you would expect a mineral to be. When it is separated, a strange thing happens; the rock breaks

down into fine, soft, soapy fibres(纤维).

Scientists do not know why the rock can be separated easily into threads(线), but they have

found thousands of users of this fireproof(防火的)material, of the so-called “cloth of stone”. 56.Which title best expresses the main idea of this passage?

A.show the need for more scientists

C.increase the sales of asbestos

D.present facts about asbestos

B

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge. It is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.

Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about US. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.

The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.

It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a

tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it do esn’t mean it’s true.

The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍)yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!

Ros Langfod:

Before moving in with my husban d Gavin, I’d always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year.Every so often I try to go on a diet… I’m really good in a few days, then end up having the children’s leftovers or eating happily chocolate—my weakness.I’d like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children

and home.I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

72 Wait until the meal is done and all the food trays(盘子)have been collected .It’s hard for passengers to stand up to let you pass when they still have their food trays. And when using the bathroom .always clean up after yourself ---the next user will be grateful !

Keep your body ----and your possessions ----to yourself as much as possible so as not to crowd your in-flight seatmate(s).Share the armrest , especially on a long flight .Also, be careful not to kick or push on the seat in front of you.

If you are traveling with someone and want to chat, keep your voices low. 74 People can still hear through your headphones if the volume is too high.

When exiting the plane, if others are having trouble with their carry-on luggage .help them if you can.If you can’t help ,wait patiently, and don’t push past people to get off the airplane. On your flight ,remember the golden rule: 75

Dear Mr. Smith,

I’m very much glad to hear that your international shopping center will build non-smoking supermarket. In my opinion, it is a good idea to do so, for it can not only help the smokers to smoke less, and it can also do good to other customers’ health. Since you had given up selling cigarettes, the customers don’t like smoking are sure to support you. In addition, smoke in the shopping center may cause fire, which is very dangerous to both your possession and the safety of the customers. In a word, the non-smoking supermarket will not effect your business. To the contrary, it will help you attract more customers who want to keep health.

Best wishes!
