一、阅读理解

1.阅读理解

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true.

Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).

Don't argue (争辩) with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can't express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.

Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.

Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.

Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.

A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

"Look, my brother," said the gardener. "I will give you an apple tree, the best from my garden, and you, and your children, and your children's children will enjoy it."

Then the gardener called his workmen and ordered them to take up the tree and carry it to his brother's farm. They did so, and the next morning the farmer began to wonder where he should plant it.

If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into a clever person.

A team of scientists from Ohio State University did experiments on 33 volunteers who were getting better from heart disease after operations. They found those volunteers who exercised while listening to Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons did much better on language ability tests than without music. It is also used in medical fields for patients who have had head hurts because of its moderate tempo (舒缓的节拍).

“Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nerve (神经) system and these changes may imp rove the learning ability of people with heart disease,” said the psychologist Charles Emery, who led the study. “And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together,” he added.

The volunteers said they felt better emotionally and physically after exercising with or without music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have proved that music can be good for health and education. It helps reduce stress and sadness, encourage relaxation or sleep, wake up the body and improve memory and thoughts.

Scientists have been studying the results of exercise to music on learning and understanding since the early 1950s. A study showed that students who listened to Mozart's violin pieces and

The boy's bike had a broken wheel. Mick sent a post(帖子) on Facebook, asking his friends if they had the needed part. One friend saw the post and gave away two used bikes. Mick took parts from each to build a new set of wheels for the boy.

Soon after, Mick repaired a bike for the boy's brother and fixed one for his sister. Word spread, and during the year, he had fixed up lots of bikes for local kids whose parents were not able to afford new ones.

"People are throwing away bikes day and night," says Mick.

Mick puts the bikes and bike parts in his garage. "I take off the good tires or the handlebars or the seats and use them," he says.

Up to now, the bike man has repaired hundreds of bikes and given away nearly 700 newly repaired bikes. They're free, but the kids must agree on two things: They have to learn how to put waste things to good use and they have to try their best to study in school.

A small robot may help children who are ill in hospital or at home. These children may feel lonely without their friends or classmates. The robot takes their places at school. Through the robot, the children can hear their teachers and friends.

The robot is called AV1. A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot. Dolva explains how the robot AV1 works. She says from home, children use a tablet or phone to start the robot. Then they use the same device to control the robot's movements. At school, the robot becomes their eyes, ears and voice.

"So, it sits at the child's desk in the classroom and the child uses a tablet or a phone to start it and control its movements and talks through it. So it's the eyes, the ears and the voice at school." The robot is equipped with speakers, microphones and cameras that make communication easy. AV1 is large and looks like a human for a reason. When you enter my home for the first time, you will always be impressed with a small and white envelope(信封). No name, no address. It has hung on our Christmas tree for about 10 years.

It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. He didn't hate the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial(商业的) way of it, spending too much on the usual Christmas gifts, such as rushing into a store to buy a tie for Uncle Harry.

Knowing he felt this way, I decided not to buy the usual gifts, such as shirts and sweaters. I reached for something special for Mike. The idea came in an unusual way.

Our son Kevin, 12, was wrestling(摔跤) at the school. Before Christmas there was a match against a team helped by a city church, mostly poor kids. As the match began, I was surprised to see the other team wrestling only wearing the old clothes because they couldn't afford the wrestling uniforms, while our boys in their blue and gold uniforms. Of course, we ended up with beating them.

Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly," I wish just one of them could have won. In fact, they could if they had worn the uniforms. They have talent for wrestling, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them."

Mike loved kids-all kids and he knew them, having trained kids football and baseball. At that time, I thought of the idea for the gift.

That afternoon, I went to a store and bought some wrestling uniforms and sent them to the city church for the kids without leaving my name.

On Christmas Eve, I put the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and telling him that this was his gift from me. His smile was the greatest thing about Christmas that year and the next years.

You see, we lost Mike now. But every Christmas Eve I would put an envelope on the tree, and in the morning, three more joined it. Each of our children had secretly put an envelope on the tree for their dad.

That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter (笑声)Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day," says Dr. Kataria. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it worked!
