3.1 化合作用中的原子和离子

1. 分子化合物和离子化合物

当两种或更多种原子化合时它们即会形成分子。(一个分子是一个纯物质的最小微粒,它具有纯物质的组成和性质,并且不能单独存在)。自然界一些元素的存在形式是双原子分子(一个分子由两个原子组成)或者多原子分子(由两个以上原子组成)。我们把由分子组成的化合物称为分子化合物。当一个原子获得一个或者多个电子时它就获得了一个或多个负电荷并被认为是一个阴离子(anion, ['?nai?n])。当一个原子失去一个或多个电子时它就获得一个或多个正电荷而被认为是一个阳离子(cation, ['k?tai?n])。一个离子化合物(如NaCl)由正离子和负离子(Na+和Cl–)通过电荷吸引作用结合在一起。一个离子化合物的化学式给出了离子的比率(ratio, ['rei?i?u]),但是单个的分子通常是不存在的。

Most earthquakes are causally related to compressional stress or tensional stress built up at the margins of the huge moving lithospheric plates that make up the Earth’s surface.The immediate cause of most shallow earthquakes is the sudden release of stress along a fault,or fracture in the Earth’s crust resulting in moving of the opposing blocks of rock past one another.These movements cause vibrations to pass through and around the Earth in wave form,just as ripples are generated when a pebble is dropped into water.V olcanic eruption,rockfalls,landslides,and explosions can also cause a quake,but most of these are of only local extent. 6 Evidence from radiometric dating indicates that the Earth is about 4,570 million years old.Geologists have divided Earth’s history into a series of time intervals.These time intervals are not equal in length like the hours in a day.Instead the time intervals are variable in length.Different spans of time on the time scale are usually delimited by major geological or paleontological events,such as varying rock type or fossils within the strata and mass extinctions.For example,the boundary between the Cretaceous period and the Paleogene period is defined by the first appearance of animals with hard parts.
