Part III Reading Comprehension(45minutes,25points)

Section A

Directions:In this section.,there are four passages followed by question.s or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers A,B,C and D.Choose the best answer an.d mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.

Passage One

An unidentified wit once said,"laugh, and the world laughs with you.Snore, and you sleep alone."Yet snoring is far from a laughing matter,as those unfortunates with good hearing, who are rightly subjected to the sounds of the snoring disorder, will testify.

It has been estimated that one of eight Americans snores:this means that there are approximately21million people-women as well as men-who render an unpleasant sound when they are asleep. And assuming that each snorer disturbs the sleep of at least one other person,it necessarily follows that there are21million unhappy listeners. While a sleeping person breathes,

either in or out, several structures in his nose and throat generate the snoring. The sounds, coming

from the soft palate and other soft structures of the throat, are caused by vibratory responses to inflowing and outflowing air. When the soft tissues of the mouth and throat come close to the lining

of the throat, the vibrations that occur are caused by the position of the tongue. In short, the noise

made by snoring can be compared to the noise when breezes flutter a flag on a pole. The frequency

of the vribrations depends on the size, density, and elasticity of the affected tissues and on the force

of the air flow.Although it is usually the process of in haling or exhaling through the mouth that

cause snoring, short snores come from the nose of an open-mouthed sleeper. In all fairness to

snorers, however,it should be emphasized that snoring is an involuntary out which stops as the offender is awakened.

21.The snoring is caused by

A.the soft palate and other structures of the throat

B.the inflowing and outflowing air through the nose

C.the inflowing and outflowing air through mouth

D.the vibrations as a result of the inflowing and outflowing air

22.If a person produces short snores, most probably he has.

A.a soft palate

B.a big nose

C.an open mouth

D.a small throat

23.The author's attitude towards the snorers is

A.objective

B.subjective

C.sympathetic

D.annoyed

Passage Two

Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life.Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity(长寿)boost seems

to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in1858by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers(鳏夫)were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers.Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man's life and two to a woman's.The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.

Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate.Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart.Likewise.,a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn't smoke. There's a flip side, however,as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse's death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems.Even so,the odds favour marriage. In a30-years study of more than 10,000people,Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects.

So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors,health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological(生理的)mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life.People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.

A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live t0100.The ultimate social network is still being mapped out,but Christakis says:"People are interconnected,

so their health is interconnected."

24.William Farr's study and other studies show that_.

A.social life provides an effective cure for illness

B.being sociable helps improve one's quality of life

C.women benefit more than men from marriage

D.marriage contributes a great deal to longevity

25.Linda Waite's studies support the idea that_.

A.older men should quit smoking to stay healthy

B.marriage can help make up for ill health

C.the married are happier than the unmarried

D.unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life

26.It can be inferred from the context that the"flip side"(Line5,Para.2)refers to

A.the disadvantages of being married

B.the emotional problems arising from marriage

C.the responsibility of taking care of one's family

D.the consequence of a broken marriage

27.What does the author say about social networks?

A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage.

B.They help develop people's community spirit.

C.They provide timely support for those in need.

D.They help relieve people of their life's burdens.

28.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.It's important that we develop a social network when young.

B.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.

C.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.

D.We should share our social networks with each other.

Rescuers have found the bodies of over130people killed in two ferry disasters in Bangladesh.

The accidents happened during a storm that hit the country on April21.Hundreds more are missing or feared dead.

The two ferries sank in different rivers near the capital city of Dhaka as strong winds and rain

hit the South Asian country. The government has since banned all ferries and other boats from travelling at night during the April-May stormy season.

One of the ferries,MV Mitali, was carrying far more people than it was supposed to.About400 passengers fitted into a space made for just300,police said the second ferry carried about100 passengers."The number of deaths is certain to rise,"said an official in charge of the rescue work.

"No one really knows how many people were on board or how many of them survived."Ferries in Bangladesh don't always keep passenger lists, making it difficult to determine the exact number of

people on board.Besides the ferry accidents,at least40people were killed and400injured by lightning strikes, falling houses and trees and the sinking of small boats.

Storms are common this time of year in Bangladesh,as are boating accidents.Ferry disasters

take away hundreds of lives every year in a nation of130million people.Officials blame these river accidents on a lack of safety measures, too many passengers in boats and not enough checks on weather conditions.Ferries are a common means of transport in Bangladesh. It is a country covered

by about230rivers.Some20,000ferries use the nation's waterways(水路)every year.And many

Passage Four

In general, our society is becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic(官僚主

义的)management in which man becomes a small, well~oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages,well-ventilated factories and piped music, and by psychologists and "human-relations"experts;yet all this oiling does not alter the fact that man has become powerless,

that he does not wholeheartedly participate in his work and that he is bored with it.In fact, the blue

and the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management.

The worker and employee are anxious, not only because they might find themselves out of a job;they are anxious also because they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction or interest in life.

They live and die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings.

Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious.Their lives are no less empty than

.. those of their subordinates. They are even more insecure m some respects. They are in a highly competitive race.To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of

self-respect.When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the

tight mixture of submissiveness and independence. From that moment on they are tested again and again by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge

their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as

good as or better than one's fellow competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness.

Am I suggesting that we should return to the pre-industrial mode of production or to nineteenth-century"free enterprise"capitalism?Certainly not.Problems are never solved by returning to a

stage which one has already outgrown.I suggest transforming our social system from a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maximal production and consumption are ends in themselves into a humanist industrialism in which man and full development of his potentialities-

those of love and of reason-are the aims of all social arrangements.Production and consumption should serve only as means to this end,and should be prevented from ruling man.

35.By"a well-oiled cog in the machinery"the author intends to render the idea that man is

A.a necessary part of the society though each individual's function is negligible

B.working in complete harmony with the rest of the society

C.an unimpmtant part in comparison with the rest of the society, though functioning smoothly

D.a humble component of the society, especially when working smoothly

36.The real cause of the anxiety of the workers and employees is that.

A.they are likely to lose their jobs

B.they have no genuine satisfaction or interest in life

C.they are faced with the fundamental realities of human existence

D.they are deprived of their individuality and independence

37.From the passage we can infer that real happiness of life belongs to those_.

A.who are at the bottom of the society

B.who are higher up in their social status

C.who prove better than their fellow-competitors

D.who could keep far away from this competitive world

38.To solve the present social problems the author suggests that we should.

A.resort to the production mode of our ancestors

B.offer higher wages to the workers and employees

C.enable man to fully develop his potentialities

D.take the fundamental realities for granted

39.The author's attitude towards industrialism might best be summarized as one of.

A.approval

B.dissatisfaction

C.suspicion

D.tolerance

40.Which is not true in the following sentence?

A.We should return to the pre-industrial mode of production.

B.They are anxious because they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction.

C.Should be prevented from ruling man.

D.Enable man to fully develop his potentialities.

Section B

Psychologists warn that plastic surgery can lead to an identity crisis, among other psychological issues. If you were a fan of the MTV reality series The Hills, you'll remember the complete physical transformation of Heidi Montag. In mere months, she went from a petite(矮小),natural beauty from Colorado to resembling some sort of blonde Barbie as a result of multiple facial and body reconstructive surgeries that she didn't even attempt to hide from the public. What's worse is that she

was in her early20s at the time.

We all figured that deep psychological issues were at the root of Montag's shocking procedure list, and now, according to a number of U.S.psychologists,we can safely assume that she may also

be suffering from an identity crisis.

Psychologist Paul Lorene tells the Daily Mail that most patients undergo cosmetic surgery for the wrong reasons, wanting to look similar to a particular model or actor."They have this glorified

picture of this perfect identity,"he says, and this can lead to deep psychological problems when the patients discover the identity they were after isn't actually perfect.

Often people don't realize the attachments they have to their facial features until they alter them

with surgery.Perhaps you always hated your large nose, but whether you liked it or not,it was a

pafl of you for your life thus far.If you have surgery to make it smaller,it is reasonable to believe

that your self identity could suffer if you end up feeling disconnected from your own face that is now unfamiliar.

Do you think cosmetic surgeries can cause identity crisis?

Comment l:

The image that people see in the mirror and take for granted actually runs deeper. After

appearance-altering surgery, some patients come to realize"that imperfection is actually part of their identity".

Comment2:

The identity crisis exists long before the surgery takes place. If you don't get plastic surgery you will still have an identity crisis.I have identity crisis every morning when I look in the mirror. When

did l get older? And where the hell is my hair?

Comment3:

To quote American Judge Judy,"Beauty fades, dumb is forever."

Comment4:

When you look in the mirror and don't recognize yourself, then you have an identity crisis. Really, these studies and articles of this sort are stating the obvious.

41.The main idea of the quoted blog is that.

A.some people undergo facial surgery for wrong reasons

B.the patients will eventually find facial surgeries unsatisfying

C.plastic surgery can cause a loss of self identity

D.people's facial features are important for their self identity

42.According to the blog,Heidi Montag.

A.was ugly before she received reconstructive surgeries

B.is suffering from a serious identity crisis now

C.has changed drastically after the reconstructive surgeries

D.was reluctant to show her greatly-changed beauty in public

Paper One

Part I Dialogue Communication

Section A

Dialogue One

under the weather“不在状态”,run-down“崩溃,疲倦”。

get over“克服”。

因此,本题B(我上周感冒很严重)是正确答案。

Dialogue Two

Section B

Security or Privacy

In recent years, security cameras are installed in public places for the purpose of preventing

and combating crimes. This phenomenon has sparked many debates. Most people welcome it and believe these cameras play a positive role in maintaining people's security, while still some others

think installing cameras threaten people's privacy rights.

Those supporters maintain that installing cameras in public places, especially some key sites,

can provide law enforcement agencies with criminal evidence. Moreover, they say that installation of cameras is a good deterrent to those with intentions of crimes. However, those protesting this practice claim that the government shouldn't sacrifice millions of citizens'privacy rights only for monitoring probably nonexistent crimes.

As to me,I prefer the former opinion. In my opinion,As far as public security situation is concerned, the installation of security cameras is quite necessary to maintaining citizens'security.

On the other hand, people needn't feel uncomfonable for being monitored by a camera in public places since everything we do outside can be seen by some other people. To conclude, the advantages of installing cameras in public places much outweigh its disadvantages.

Part III Reading Comprehension (25 points) Section A Directions: In this section, there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet. Passage One Sometimes a race is not enough. Sometimes a runner just wants to go further. That’s what happened to Dennis Martin and Brooke Curran. Martin, 68, a retired detective form New York City, took up running after his first wife died. Curran, 46, a philanthropist(慈善家)from Alexandria, started running to get out of the house and collect her thoughts. Both she and Martin got good at running but felt the desire to do more. “The more I trained, the better I got,” Curran said,” but I would cross the finish line with no sense of accomplishment.”Eventually , they worked up to running marathons(马拉松)(and longer races) in other countries, on other countries. Now both have achieved a notable -and increasingly less rate- milestone; running the 26.2-mile race on all seven continents. They are part of a phenomenon that has grown out of the running culture in the past two decades, at the intersection of athleticism and leisure: “runcations,”which combine distance running with travel to exotic places. There trips, as expensive as they are physically challenging ,are a growing and competitive market in the travel industry. “In the beginning, running was enough,” said Steen Albrechtsen, a press manager. The classic marathon was the ultimate goal, then came the super marathons, like London and New York. But when 90,000 people a year can take that challenge, it is no longer e xciting and adventurous .Hence, the search for new adventures began.”“No one could ever have imagined that running would become the lifestyle activity that it is today,”said Thom Gilligan, founder and president of Boston-based Marathon Tours and Travel. Gilligan, who has been in business since 1979, is partly responsible for the seven-continent phenomenon.

Passage Two According to a study, intellectual activities make people eat more than when just resting. This has shed new light on brain food. This finding might also help explain the obesity epidemic of a society in which people often sit. Researchers split 14 university student volunteers into three groups for a 45-minute session of either relaxing in a sitting position, reading and summarizing a text, or completing a series of memory, attention, and alert tests on the computer. After the sessions, the participants were invited to eat as much as they pleased. Though the study involved a very small number of participants, the results were stark. The students who had done the computer tests downed 253 more calories or 29.4 percent more than the couch potatoes. Those who had summarized a text consumed 203 more calories than the resting group. Blood samples taken before, during, and after revealed that intellectual work cause much bigger fluctuations in glucose (葡萄糖) levels than rest periods, perhaps owing to the stress of thinking. The researchers figure the body reacts to these fluctuations by demanding food to restore glucose-the brain’s fuel. Glucose is converted by the body from carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and is supplied to the brain via the bloodstream. The brain cannot make glucose and so needs a constant supply. Brain cells need twice as much energy as other cells in the body. Without exercise to balance the added intake, however, such “brain food” is probably not smart. Various studies in animals have shown that consuming fewer calories overall leads to sharper brains and longer life, and most researchers agree that the findings apply, in general, to humans. And, of course, eating more can make you fat. “Caloric overcompensation following intell ectual work, combined with the fact that we are less physically active when doing intellectual tasks, could contribute to the obesity epidemic currently observed in industrialized countries,” said lead researcher Jean-Philippe Chaput at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada. “This is a factor that should not be ignored, considering that more and more people hold jobs of an intellectual nature,” the researcher concluded. 37. The passage mainly tells us that . A. consuming fewer calories can lead to sharper brains B. thinking consumed more calories than resting C. resting more can make people fat D. brain cells need more energy than other cells in the body
