A Pyment Greater Than Money 比金钱更重要的东西1A Pyment Greater Than Money 比金钱更重要的东西When I was 14 , I earned money in the summer by mowing lawns , and I got to know people by the flowers I had to remember not to cut down , by the things stuck in the ground on purpose or by the things lost in the grass . I also learned something about my neighbors in Louisville , Ky. , by their preferred method of payment : by the job , the month -- or not at all .在十四岁的时候,我利用暑假时间给人割杂草挣点零花钱,通过这个机会,我接触了形形色色的人,有的人告诉我割草时不许伤害园子里的花,有的人故意给地里插些东西,有的人在园子的草地上丢了东西。

我还通过付款方式了解了我肯塔基州路易维尔的邻居们,他们有的按照工作量付钱,有的按月付,有的干脆不给钱。

2Mr Ballou fell into the last category , and he always had a reason. One day he had nothing smaller than a fifty . On another he was flat-out of checks ; on another he was simply not home when I knocked on his door . Still , except for the money , he was a nice enough old guy , always waving or tipping his hat when he'd seen me from a distance . I figured him for a thin retirement check , maybe an injury that kept him doing his own yardwork . I kept a running total , but didn't worry about the amount too much . Grass was grass , and the little that was Mr Ballou's didn't take long to trim.巴卢先生属于最后一种人,而且他总是有不付钱的借口。

The Glorious Messiness of EnglishRobert MacNeil 1 The story of our English language is typically one of massive stealing from other languages. That is why English today has an estimated vocabulary of over one million words, while other major languages have far fewer.英语中绚丽多彩的杂乱无章现象罗伯特·麦克尼尔我们的英语的历史是典型的大量窃取其它语言的历史。

2 French, for example, has only about 75,000 words, and that includes English expressions like snack bar and hit parade. The French, however, do not like borrowing foreign words because they think it corrupts their language. The government tries to ban words from English and declares that Walkman is not desirable; so they invent a word, balladeur, which French kids are supposed to say instead -- but they don't.例如,法语只有约75,000个单词,其中还包括像snack bar(快餐店)和hit parade(流行唱片目录)这样的英语词汇。

Unit 7 Related Information
The majority of fresh water is held in ice (glaciers and polar ice caps) and a large proportion also lies too far underground to be exploitable. The amount of fresh water directly available is less than 1% of the total water in the Earth System. While the atmosphere does not hold a large proportion of Earth’s fresh water at any one time, huge amounts of water are continually cycling through this reservoir on very rapid timescales. The cycling of water through the atmosphere is essential to renew the fresh water resources on which all life depends.

Americans use their cars even for very short distances such as going to the neighborhood store to buy some groceries. The average householdowns two cars, trucks or sport vehicles and one in four owns three or more. Ninety percent of Americans drive to get where they need to go, reporting an averageof 87 minutes a day behind the wheel. For car commuters, it’s an average of 100 minutes. Cities like Atlanta, San Bernardino and Riverside, Calif., have difficult commutes as theresult of city sprawl. In Atlanta, 12.7% of commuters spend more than an hour getting to work, and in the “Inland Empire〞, which includes San Bernardino and Riverside, 15% of commuters take more than an hour to get to the office.About a third can be classified as aggressive drivers. Six in ten concede they sometimes go well over the speed limit. Sixty-two percent occasionally get frustrated behind the wheel, more than four in ten get angry and two in ten sometimes boil into road rage. And nothing fuels driver anger like getting stuck in a traffic jam.Anyway, the road still offers more freedom than frustration. Three quarters of Americans say driving often gives them a sense of independence, and nearly half say it’s often relaxing. Four in ten love their cars — not just like them, but love them.1 Explanation of Difficult Sentences1. (Para. 2) Taking pictures of funny road signs while traveling is a favorite pastime for many travelers. Analysis: The gerund phrase beginning with taking is the subject of the sentence, in which while travelling (= while they are travelling) serves as the time adverbial of the verb taking.Translation:旅行过程中拍一些滑稽有趣的路牌对很多旅行者来说都是一大消遣乐事。
