2.重视一词多义的现象
在进行英译汉时，译者必须弄懂英语句子结构后，选出关键 词最佳的词义。英谚云：“We know a word by the company it keeps.”又云：“Each word when used in a new context is a new .”因此，语境对多义词的重要性再怎么强调都不为过。如：
（3） He ground his cigarette in the ashtray. ［误译］ 他把烟放在烟灰缸里。
［正译］ 他把烟碾熄在烟灰缸里。
［解释］ 句中ground为grind的过去式，不能看作是“把……放在 （地）上”的ground. （4） She is at home on the subject. ［误译］ 她在家研究这一科目。

• In the business world, letters are used to handle routine matters, to establish credit, to adjust complaints, etc. A letter is often the evidence of an arrangement or a contract, therefore, it must be written with care. • A business letter, by definition, is a letter written in formal language, usually used when writing from one business organization to another, or for correspondence between such organizations and their customers, clients and other external parties.

• 6.3 公示语翻译的要求
公示语翻译的要求有以下几点：
1. 注重文化差异。 2. 分析语境，正确把握“译、雅译或不译”的原则。
考虑到不同国度、不同国情，公示语的翻译应遵循 “译、雅译或不译”的原则。像商店招牌、街头路牌等含 有指示意义的公示语我们一般直接翻译，而对于那些提示、 限制、强制性的公示语则要借鉴跨文化交际理论，遵循 Peter Newmark 的交际翻译方法进行“有效”、“优雅” 的翻译。
2. 流畅自然。 3. 表达清晰严谨。
在公证书中，有时为了体现法律文件的严谨精确， 文中会使用各种附加语、修饰语和复杂紧凑的复合句，以 避免表述不清或不严密。在翻译时要理解公证书拟定的原 本用意，抓住重要的信息和中心含义，再借用译入语的各 种语言手段再现法律文体的严谨性。
4. 格式要规范。 公证书的文字中总是采用纪实和确认的行文方式，
证书、证明中常出现各种结构严谨的套语，如：汉语中常用的 “特此证明”或“兹证明”在英语中常译作This is 译的要求有以下几点：
1. 措辞准确。 涉外公证涉及的内容比较繁杂，因而公证书中会出
现不同的术语。因此，译者要对公证书中与术语相关的概 念理解清楚，翻译时措辞要准确。此外，公证书的行文力 求准确从而限制了同义代换的可能性，译者应在译文中不 厌其烦地重复使用同一术语，以使概念表达得更为精确。

• 6.1 证书和证明翻译的特点
证书和证明的翻译具有以下几个特点： 1. 翻译完整。
证书证件的语言内容从首部的证书证件名称、编号等到正文（包 括备注、发证说明等）再到尾部的出证机构、签发、承办人员、出证 日期、出证机构公章等无一遗漏都要翻译出来。 2. 明确达意，简明得体。
证书是证明相关人员能力、资格、权力、责任关系的文件，具有 一定的法律效力，语言严谨规范、措辞准确，在翻译时也要保证准确 无误、顺达明了。证明一般篇幅简短，在翻译时要简洁明了、措辞得 当。 3. 进行必要的格式和语序调整。
英汉语的证书格式规范有很大差异，在翻译时要根据目的语的要 求进行必要的调整。如：英语的资格证书文字内容往往是单行排列的， 而汉语则没有这样的要求。 4. 恰当使用套语。
如“不得自带酒水”和“严禁喧哗”分别翻译为： Consumption of our foods only 和Please keep silent。 3. 力求通俗易懂、简洁明了。
在翻译公示语时，应力求做到通顺易懂、清晰直接、 规范自然，以排除译入语读者在阅读和交际上的困难。
如：问讯处——Information，严禁吸烟——No smoking，减速——Slow，打折销售——On Sales，退 房——Check-out，请排队等候—Please line up 等。
