airplanes,in airports and hotels. These laptops connect peopleto their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want.Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake,a 110yearold college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use emails to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home,in a fastfood restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities,is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar than desktop computer. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet but also libraries and other resources.State highereducation officials are studying how laptops can help students.State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities. At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said,“Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window of the world. They can see everything and do everything.”1.The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to________.A.use for their schoolworkB.access the InternetC.work at homeD.connect them Unit 4 Warming Up & Reading阅读理解AElizabeth Blackwell was born on February 3, 1821 in Bristol, England. Her father was a rich sugar businessman at the time. Because her parents thought boys and girls should be equal, Elizabeth received the same education as her brothers. In 1832, her father’s business was destroyed by fire, so her family moved to New York City. But her father’s business there failed. Then in 1837, the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Not long after, her father died. After her father’s de ath, Elizabeth, at the age of 16, had to go to work. When she was 24, she visited her dying friend Mary. Her friend said, “You’re young and strong; you should become a doctor. ”That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. But she knew this was what she was going to do.After several rejections from medical schools, she finally was accepted by Geneva Medical College. By studying hard, she graduated successfully in 1849.After graduating from medical school, she went to Paris to learn more about medicine. She wanted to be a surgeon, but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea. When she returned to America in 1851, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. In 1857, Elizabeth and her sister, also a doctor, along with another woman doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children. Besides, she also set up the first medical school for women in 1868, where she taught the women students about disease prevention. It was the first time that the idea of preventing disease was t aught in a medical school.Elizabeth Blackwell started the British National Health Society in 1871, which helped people learn how to stay healthy. It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie Troy toAlbany on the Hudson River. It joined the Great Lakes with theAtlantic Ocean. The canal served as a route over which industrialgoods could flow into the west, and materials could pour into theeast. The Erie Canal helped New York develop into the nation’s largest city. The building of the canal was paid for entirely by the state of New York. It cost $7, 143,789, but it soon gained its price many times over. Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(过运河费)were stopped, the state collected $121, 461, 891.For a hundred years before the Erie was built, people had been talking about a canal which could join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. Those who were against the canal laughingly called it “Clinton’s Ditch(沟)”. 人教版高中英语选修六课后阅读训练13.【Unit 4 Period 1】及答案解析

人教版高中英语选修六课后阅读训练13.【Unit 4 Period 1】及答案解析Ⅰ. 阅读理解AGlobal warming is the process of earth’s atmosphere heating up. Over the last 100 years, the average temperature ofearth’s atmosphere has gone up 1 degree Fahrenheit. The weather has not changed exactly the same way in every area of the planet. But scientists think that the rise in average temperature is already affecting the earth’s climate. Many scientists now believe that global warming is caused by cutting down trees, producing more trash, and polluting the environment and so on. Many scientists believe that the biggest cause of global warming is new human technologies that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is not new. Certain gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, make it hard for he at energy to go into space. In the past, the climate didn’t change much because nature produced just the right amount of greenhouse gases to deal with it. Today, most scientists are pretty sure that the rising temperature can’t be blamed on nature. Ever si nce the industrial revolution in the 1700s, humans have relied on machines for daily life. And many of those machines give off a lot of greenhouse gases. An increase in the release of greenhouse gases from human activities is throwing nature off balance. The climate is a very complicated thing, but many scientists agree that the rising atmospheric temperature has already damaged the environment. Sheets of ice, called glaciers, are melting in Antarctica and other parts of the globe. As glaciers break off and melt into the oceans, they are adding warm water to the oceans and causing the sea level to rise.Over the past 100 years, the sea level has risen 6~8 inches around the world. That means land along the coasts is beginning to disappear under water. Bigger and warmer oceans are also adding to other weather problems caused by pollution in the atmosphere. Some places have received more rain, others have had bigger storms and a few areas in the world have experienced unusual droughts.【语篇概述】本文主要讲述了全球变暖的原因及影响。

B.Benefit.C.Share. D.Endanger.4.Which of the following best shows how the plan would work?5.What serious problems might the plan cause according to the passage?A.Earth might be moved too far away and man might be frozen to death.B.The comet might hit Earth and man might lose the moon.C.The comet might hit Jupiter or Saturn and never return to Earth.D.Earth’s working life might be greatly shortened.dissolve v.溶解生义:v.解散;解除;终止Their marriage was dissolved in 2009.他们于2009年解除了婚姻关系。
