But owing to the constant presence of air currents，arranging both the dust and vapour in strata of varying extent and density，and of high or low clouds which both absorb and reflect the light in varying degrees，we see produced all those wondrous combinations of tints and those gorgeous ever-changing colours which are a constant source of admiration and delight to all who have the advantage of an uninterrupted view to the west and who are accustomed to watch for those not infrequent exhibitions of nature‘s kaleidoscopic colour painting. With every change in the altitude of the sun the display changes its character；and most of all when it has sunk below the horizon，and owing to the more favourable angles a larger quantity of the coloured light is reflected toward us，Especially when there is a certain amount of cloud is this the case. 汉语可说“阻止某人做某事”，但英语习惯上不能说prevent sb to do sth，遇此情况可改说prevent sb (from) doing sth或prevent sb’s doing sth。
如：■我们一定要防止疾病蔓延。
误：We must prevent the disease to spread.
正：We must prevent the disease (from) spreading.
■大雨使他不能来。
误：The rain prevented him to come.
正：The rain prevented his (from) coming.
正：The rain prevented his coming.
asleep的用法习惯
一、习惯上只用作表语
是表语形容词，所以一般不能单独放在名词前作定语:
正：The baby is asleep. 这婴儿是睡着的。
误：Look at the asleep baby.
正：Look at the sleeping baby. 瞧这个睡觉的婴儿。
注：asleep 虽不能单独放在名词前作前位定语，但有时却可放在名词后作后置定语，另外若它本身受到状语修饰，则也可以放在名词前作定语。
如：
Who is that fast asleep boy? 那个熟睡的孩子是谁?
The boy asleep over there is my nephew. 睡在那儿的那个孩子是我侄儿。
二、习惯搭配问题
汉语的“睡得很熟”，英语习惯上用fast [sound] asleep, 而不说very (much, very much) asleep。
如：
You will be fast [sound] asleep by the time we get home. 等我们到家时，你会睡得很熟了。
Don’t wake her up —she is fast [sound] asleep. 别吵醒她，她睡得正香。
三、惯用习语
fall asleep 是习语，意为“入睡”。
如：
She fell asleep during the meeting. 开会时她睡着了。
He fell asleep (while) watching TV. 他在看电视时睡着了。
be late for还是be late with
be late后是搭配介词for还是with?请看下面这一道题：
“You went late _______ the stadium yesterday evening, didn’t you?”“Yes, my wife was a little late _______ the supper.”

B. for, with
C. for, for
D. at, for
【陷阱】容易误选B 或D。
【分析】答案应选A。
第一空填to 比较好理解，因为此处的late为副词，用以修饰go to the stadium 中的动词go;而第二句的with 则是许多同学不容易想到的，相反，更多
地可能是想到for，现将两者区别如下：be late for表示做某事迟到，而be late with 表示做某事做晚了(=be late in doing sth)。
比较：
We were late for dinner. 我们吃饭迟到了。
We were late with dinner [=in having dinner]. 我们吃饭吃得迟。
句中my wife was a little late with the supper 的意思是“我妻子准备晚饭稍迟了一点”。
你知道如何用英语有示汉语的“身体”吗?许多同学一想到“身体”两字，很可能只会联想到英语中的body。
但事实上，汉语中说的“身体”有时可以用body来表示，有时是不能用body来表示的。
具体说来，应注意以下几点：
一、表示相对于精神(mind, spirit, soul)的“身体”，可用body 来表示。
如：
You can imprison my body but not my mind. 你可以禁锢我的身体但不能禁锢我的精神。
His body is old but his mind is young. 他身体虽然老了，但心还很年轻。
注：要表示汉语中的“身心”，英语通常说成body and mind，其词序可以颠倒，即也可说成mind and body。
如：
The girl is pure in body and mind. 这姑娘身心纯洁。
He feels weary in body and mind. 他感到身心疲劳。
She is sound in body and mind [mind and body]. 她身心健康。
另外注意，body and soul也可连用构成习语，不过其意不是“身心”，而是“全心全意地”“完完全全地”，在句中用作副词。
如：
He loves her body and soul. 他真心实意爱她。
He does his work body and soul. 他全心全意地工作。
二、侧重指躯体、躯干等的“身体”，也可用body 表示。
如：
My body was all aches and pains. 我浑身疼痛。
He wore clothes to keep his body warm. 他穿衣服以暖和身子。
He was badly burned on the face and body. 他的脸部和身上都严重烧伤。
Aspirin is quickly absorbed by [into] the body. 阿司匹林很快被身体吸收了。
The body quickly adjusts (itself) to changes in temperature. 身体迅速(自行)调节以适应气温的变化。
三、表示健康状况的“身体”，一般不能直接用body, 可改用其他说法(如用health, healthy, fit, well 等)。
如：
He is in good health. / He is healthy. 他身体健康。
Keep healthy, study well and work well. 身体好，学习好，工作好。
What matters most is good health. 最要紧的是有个好的身体。
You should pay more attention to your health. 你要更注意身体。
If you took more exercise, you might feel healthier. 如果你多锻炼，你可能会感到身体更好。
I do a lot of walking, which keeps me fit. 我经常走很多路，这使我保持身体健康。
If you were in better health, we’d have let you go with us. 你要是身体好一点，我们就让你和我们一道去了。
注：有些汉语中的“身体”，在英语中无需用特定的词来表达，可考虑将其隐在一定的上下文中。
如：
Take care of yourselves. 希望你们注意身体。
How do you feel? / How are you feeling? 你身体感觉怎么样?
How have you been keeping? 你的身体一向如何?
I’ll look in this evening to see how she is. 我今晚去探望她一下，看她身体如何。
