How to create a Virtual Ethernet AdapterPrerequisites:To create a Virtual Ethernet Adapter (VEA), you need to have a logical partition created in advance, which could be either a VIOS partition or an AIX/Linux partition.To create a VEA, follow these steps.1.Log onto the HMC web console with valid user id and password.2.From the navigation, expand Systems Management -> Servers -> Name_of_Server.All existing logical partitions are listed in the content panel on the right side.3.Select the logical partition on which you want to create the VEA, and click Configuration-> Manage Profiles from its content menu.4.In the Managed Profiles window, select the profile on which you want to create the VEAand click Edit.5.In the Virtual Adapaters panel in the Logical Partition Profile Properties window,click Actions -> Create -> Ethernet Adapter.6.Input the corresponding values in the Adapter ID and the VLAN ID fields, espeically theVLAN ID that should be the same as the one you planned for the SEA, and select the option of "This adapter is required for partition activation" and "Access external network".Note: The Adapter ID will usually be a value assigned automatically.7.Click OK to complete the creation of the virtual ethernet adapter. The created VEA shouldbe listed in the Virtual Adapters panel.How to create a Shared Ethernet Adapter and configure its TCP/IPPrerequisites:To create a Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA), you need to have the following components be set up correctly:• A Physical Ethernet Adapter as backend WITHOUT IP address set <PEAN> .• A Virtual Ethernet Adapter is defined in the VIOS' profile <VEAN> . For how to createa VEA, refer to the steps at the begining of the document.• A valid internal VLAN ID is specified: <VLANID>To verify the corresponding physical and virtual ethernet adapter, follow these steps.1.Activate the VIOS if it's not in the Running status.2.Log onto it with its administrator id, such as padmin.3.Issue the List Device command, which is shown below, to check if the virtual ethernetadapter is listed. In this scenario, we created an ent5 as the virtual ethernet adapter.> lsdev -virtual4.Issue the List Device command, which is shown below, to check if the physical ethernetadapter that will be used to create the SEA is listed. In this scenario, we select the ent3 as the physical ethernet adapter.> lsdev -type adapterAs for the valid internal VLAN ID, in this scenario, we specify 1 as the ID, which is PVID=1.To create a SEA is a process to create a virtual device in VIOS, which can be done by issuing the following command.$ mkvdev -sea <PEAN> -vadapter <VEAN> -default <VEAN> -defaultid <VLANID>In this scenario, we want to create a Shared Ethernet Adapter on top of a virtual adapter ent5 using PVID 1 and the physical adapter ent3 as backend. Thus, the command is as below. $ mkvdev -sea ent3 -vadapter ent5 -default ent5 -defaultid 1If the command is completed successfully, you will get a similar message as follows.ent6 Availableen6et6You can issue the following command to check its existence.> lsdev -type adapterAfter the creation of the SEA, we also need to configure its TCP/IP to make it work as expected. In this case, because the SEA device is ent6, the associated interface is then en6.•SubnetMask is the subnet mask address you defined for your subnet.•Gateway is the gateway address you defined for your subnet.•NameServerAddress is the address of your domain name server.•DomainName is the domain of your network.In this scenario, the command will be as follows.$ mktcpip -hostname prva90 -inetaddr 9.125.53.90 -interface en6 -netmask255.255.255.0 -gateway 9.125.53.1 -nsrvaddr 10.0.0.250 -nsrvdomain -startWith the created SEA, client partitons(LPARs) under the VIOS, which have virtual adapters that use the same PVID as the SEA does, are now supposed to be able to access network. Notes:1.For those virtual adapters, they can be either created before the creation of the SEA orcreated after it, as long as they use the same PVID.2.You might need to configure the corresponding TCP/IP in the operating system that islocated in the LPAR to make the OS be able to access network.How to use Link Aggregation to combine several physical ethernet adapters to provide network access for LPARsDescription:To assign separated physical ethernet adapter to various LPARs adds complexity to the administration work. Also, there might be possibe to cause resource shortage, which is that there are not enough physical ethernet adapters. To solve these problems, we can use the Link Aggregation technology to combine limited PEA and provide unified network access to all client partitions under the same VIOS.In the following scenario, we will combine three PEAs that are ent7, ent8, and ent9 as a link aggregation device. Noted that these PEAs are required to connect to the same switch!Detailed steps:1. Check if the required attributes of these three PEAs are the same by using the command below.$ lsdev -dev Name_of_device -attrIf not, use the chdev command to change them to the desired ones.$ chdev -dev Name_of_device -attr media_speed=Auto_Negotiation jumbo_frames=yes2. On the VIOS, issue the following command to create a link aggregation device. $ mkvdev -lnagg ent7 ent8 ent9ent10 Availableen10et10Using the command below, you can see that those three PEAs are added adapters of the link aggregation device.$ lsdev -dev ent10 -attr3.
