As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby's point of view.Mothers, doctors and nurses alike have no idea of where a baby's blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth. It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a fourhourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clockwatching schedule was Dr Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I've never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldn't follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks.Well, at last we have copperbottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8, their IQ (智商) scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample (样本) of 10,419 children born in the early 1990s, taking account of parental education, family income, a child's sex and age, the mother's health and feeding style. These results don't surprise me. Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no account of sinking blood sugar levels.I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeding practices.16. According to Paragraph 2, one reason why a baby cries is that it feels ________.A.sick B.upset C.sleepy D.hungry17. What does the author think about Dr King?A.He is strict.B.He is unkind.C.He has the wrong idea.D.He sets a timetable for mothers.18. The word copperbottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to________.A.basic B.reliable C.surprising D.interesting19. What does the research tell us about feeding a baby on demand?A.The baby will sleep well.B.The baby will have its brain harmed.C.The baby will have a low blood sugar level.D.The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8.20. The author supports feeding the baby ________.A.in the nightB.every four hoursC.whenever it wants foodD.according to its blood sugar levelBIf you're a male and you're reading this, congratulations: you're a survivor. According to statistics, you're more than twice as likely to die of skin cancer than a woman, and nine times more likely to die of AIDS. Assuming you make it to the end of your natural term, about 78 years for men in Australia, you'll die on average five years before a woman. There're many reasons for this—typically, men take more risks than women and are more likely to drink and smoke—but perhaps more importantly, men don't go to the doctor.“Men aren't seeing doctors as often as they should,” says Dr Gullotta. “This is particularly so for the over40s, when diseases tend to strike.”Gullotta says a healthy man should visit the doctor every year or two. For those over 45, it should be at least once a year. Two months ago Gullotta saw a 50yearold man who had delayed doing anything about his smoker's cough for a year.“When I finally saw him it had already spread and he has since died from lung cancer,” he says. “Earl ier detection and treatment may not have cured him, but it would have prolonged(延长) his life.”According to a recent survey, 95%of women aged between 15 and early 40s see a doctor once a year, compared to 70% of men in the same age group.“A lot of men think they're invincible (不可战胜的),” Gullotta says. “They only come in when a friend drops dead on the golf course and they think, ‘Geez,_if_it_could_happen_to_him,…’”Then there's the ostrich approach. “Some men are scared of what might be thereand would rather not know,” says Dr Ross Cartmill.“Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies,” Cartmill says. He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive checkups.Regular checkups for men would inevitably place strain on the public purse, Cartmill says. “But prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the diseases. Besides, the ultimate cost far greater; it's called premature death.”21.Why does the author congratulate his male readers at the beginning of the passage?A.They are more likely to survive serious diseases today.B.Their average life span has been considerably extended.C.They have lived long enough to read this article.D.They are sure to enjoy a longer and happier life.22.What is the most important reason that men die five years earlier on average than women according to the passage?A.Men drink and smoke much more than women.B.Men don't seek medical care as often as women.C.Men aren't as cautious as women in face of danger.D.Men are more likely to suffer from fatal diseases.23.Which of the following best completes the underlined sentence “Geez, if it could happen to him,…” (Para. 8)?A.it could happen to me, tooB.I should avoid playing golfC.I should consider myself luckyD.it would be a big misfortune24.What does Dr Ross Cartmill mean by “the ostrich approach” (Para. 9)?A.A casual attitude towards one's health conditions.B.A new therapy for certain psychological problems.C.Refusal to get medical treatment for fear of the pain involved.D.Unwillingness to find out about one's disease because of fear.25.What does Cartmill say about regular checkups for men?A.They may increase public expenses.B.They will save money in the long run.C.They may cause psychological strains on men.D.They will enable men to live as long as women.答案课时作业(二十八)Ⅰ.母亲因癌症晚期不幸去世使作者感到无比悲伤,在文中作者追忆母亲的伟大和母亲对自己的影响。

own.So far,I have a master’s degree and the coolest job ever as a physician assistant. But instead of waking up in a pretty apartment,I hear the early-morning sound of my parents making coffee downstairs. At 27,I still live with my parents, and I love it.My decision to live at home was not one of absolute necessity. As a physician assistant,I make a good salary and would be able to live on my own comfortably if I needed to do so.By the time I finished graduate school,I had had a $150,000 debt from both undergraduate and graduate education. With several of these loans earning a 7.9% interest rate,my father calculated that my loans were increasing by $15 a day in interest alone. At this rate,it would take me 30 years to pay off my studentloans, with much of the payment going straight to interest. At last,I decided to live with my parents.Beyond the endless supply of home-cooked meals, the best thing about moving back home is that I am not alone.Several of my physician assistant friends are in the same boat as I am—we are all highly educated,white-collar employees who live at home. Our co-workers in the medical field think it is a great idea because many of them are facing the same Scratching an itch can make it worse and now scientists know why.Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis have discovered that scratching causes the brain to produce a chemical called serotonin(血清素),which makes the itching more intense(强烈的).Scientists have long known that scratching causes a mild sensation(感知) of pain in your skin.2. Yet pain signals that travel to your brain relieve the itching only temporarily. The problem, says researcher Zhou-Feng Chen,is that when the brain receives those pain signals,it produces serotonin to help control the pain. When serotonin travels along the spinal cord(脊髓),it can“jump tracks,”moving from pain-sensing nerve cells to those that influence itch intensity.3.Although Chen conducted his study on mice, the same annoying cycle of itching and scratching is thought to occur in humans.4. Not exactly, says Chen.Serotonin is a neurotransmitter(神经传递介质).It is involved in growth, aging, and moodregulation.Blocking serotonin would have far-reaching effects throughout thebody,Chen explains. The researchers are looking for other ways to break the cycle so they can help people with itchy conditions. One possibility:Affecting the communication between serotonin and the nerve cells that transmit the itchy sensation.5.A.Try to resist scratching it.B.Until then, try not to scratch!C.This pain masks the itchy feeling.D.The result:The itch will be more and stronger.E.So can blocking serotonin make you itch-free?F.If the itch is really bothering you, talk to your doctor.G.Scientists discover why scratching an itch can make it worse.Ⅲ.书面表达假设你是新华中学学生会主席李华,你校将在下周五下午两点到五点在学校礼堂举行主题为“学会感恩”的英语演讲竞赛。

练案[28]选修六Unit 3 A healthy lifeⅠ.阅读理解A(2022·石家庄二中月考) You know the saying “You’re as young as you feel.” Well, there may be some truth in that, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspecti v es on Psychological Science. In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4,421 men found that those who became bald at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heat disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2,017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes.” the researchers wrote. The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children earlier, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis (假说) that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it”. While the mechanism (机制) remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and set in motion a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health.”文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。

Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet. For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year.Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult. The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed. While teachers are holidaying in the UK,many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning. In setting out its plans for a fiveterm year,Nottingham City Council(委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a twoweek break. We believe this will give real “down time” for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning. We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.36.The passage is probably written by ________.A.an experienced teacher B.a working parentC.an inspired student D.a city council member37.The underlined word “they” in the second paragra ph refers to “________”.A.environments B.holidaysC.wages D.benefits38.It is suggested in the passage that the summer break be reduced to ________.A.2 weeks B.4.5 weeksC.5 weeks D.6 weeks39.The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students ________.A.obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costsB.get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in schoolC.benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environmentD.have more school days to receive free school meals40.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.working parents can enjoy a fiveweek break to care for their children B.the suggested plans for a fiveterm school year can hardly be carried out C.the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real “d own time”D.some school staff will say “No” to the plans for a shorter summer holiday参考答案课时作业(二十八)Ⅰ.1.B 考查介词。
