But when a storm dumped up to 3 feet of snow on western Maine, a harsh learning experience turned into a crash course in winter survival. Reported missing from their scheduled meeting place in Gilead at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the eight students and two teachers were not found until 11 a.m. yesterday [Monday], after a pilot spotted the group moving in rugged snow-blanketed area. The discovery followed an unsuccessful ground search by volunteers on snowshoes. After the group was reported missing Sunday, volunteers hiked 3 miles into the woods to look for the students. The five-hour effort turned up nothing and the decision was made to wait until yesterday morning to also canvass the area by air. A Maine Warden Service pilot lifted off and spotted the group close to their intended trail at about11 a.m. Strong airflow prevented him from descending toward the hikers but the group clearly recognized the plane as part of a search team. “They waved at the plane. They laid down, spread out, and waved,” said Mark Latti, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service. “The pilot then guided a search party into their location.” 68.Before yesterday, the three-day weekend hike was supposed to be a _____.A. fun and relaxing excursionB. ridiculous course requirementC. crash course for wilderness survivalD. challenging learning experience 69.The underlined word “canvass” in paragraph 4 probably means _____.A. intrudeB. searchC. harvestD. exploit 70.Which of the following is in the correct order? D. The search party went into the woods by air, and saved the students out. ( C ) Being less than perfectly well-dressed in a business setting can result in a feeling of great discomfort that may well require treatment to eliminate. And the sad truth is that “clothing mismatches” on the job can ruin the day of the person who is wearing the inappropriate attire(着装)—and the people with whom he or she comes in contact. Offices vary when it comes to dress codes. Some businesses have very high standards for their employees and set strict guidelines for office attire, while others maintain a more relaxed attitude. However, it is always important to remember that no matter what your company’s attitude is regarding what you wear, you are working in a business environment and you should dress properly. Certain items may be more appropriate for evening wear than for a business meeting, just as shorts and a T-shirt are better suited for the beach than for an office environment. Your attire should reflect both your environment and your position. A senior vice president has a different image to maintain than that of a secretary or sales assistant. Like it or not, you will be judged by your personal appearance. This is never more apparent than on “dress-down days”, when what you wear can say more about you than any business suit ever could. In fact, people will pay more attention to what you wear on dress-down days than on “business professional ” days. Thus, when dressing in “business casual” clothes, try to put some good taste into your wardrobe choices, recognize that the “real” definition of business casual is to dress just one notch(等级) down from what you would normally wear of business-professional attire days. Remember, there are borders between your career and our social life. You should dress one way for play and another way when you mean business. Always ask yourself where you are going and how other people will be dressed when you get there. Is the final destination the opera, the beach, or the office? Dress properly and you will discover the truth in the principle that clothes make the man—and the woman. When in doubt, always misjudge on the side of dressing slightly more traditionally than the situation demands. 72. What is the passage mainly about? A. How to dress properly in a business setting. B. A president of a company should dress differently from a secretary or sales assistant. C. The differences between professional and casual dress. D. Improper dress will make a person feel uncomfortable. 73. Which of the following statements is true? A. Every company has strict rules regarding office dress. B. You can wear whatever you like if your company doesn’t have high standards for dressing. C. You should dress according to the business setting even when there are no fixed rules. D. In companies with relaxed rules on office dress, you can’t spot a manager among others. 74. Which statement best describes “dress-down days”? A. On dress-down days, you can wear whatever you like. B. People’s clothes on dress-down days don’t receive much attention. C. We can’t judge a person’s taste by his clothes on dress-down days. D. People are usually more careful about what they wear on dress-down days than on other occasions. 75. Which of the following is NOT the rule offered in the passage with regard to business dress? A. Remember to ask others for advice when you are not sure about what to dress. B. Think about how other guests will wear if you are invited to a dinner. C. For a business meeting and a concert, you should dress differently. D. Dress a bit traditionally if you are not sure about proper dress for a certain occasion. Section C Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need. A. The comparison between renewable energy and nuclear energy B. The benefits and risks of using nuclear energy C. The reason for keeping nuclear power D. The panic caused by the leak of radiation E. The main energy source and its problems F. An ideal energy and the proportion it accounts for 76. One of the consequences of the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan on 11 March was, of course, a leak of radiation at the Fukushima nuclear power station on the country’s east coast. Soon afterwards, all the people living within twenty kilometres of the plant were told to leave because of the danger from the radiation. 77. The pros and cons of nuclear power always come up in debates about how the world should produce the energy it needs. Those who think the risks are too great can obviously use Chernobyl and now Fukushima in their argument, while also pointing out that nuclear waste stays radioactive for hundreds of years, and asking what might happen if terrorists ever chose to attack a nuclear power plant. Those who support nuclear power point out that a very small amount of nuclear fuel can create a huge amount of energy, and that unlike the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas, nuclear power stations don’t contribute to global warming by pushing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. 78. Most of the world’s energy currently comes from fossil fuels, but this can’t go on forever. As well as the problem of global warming there is the simple fact that the Earth has a limited amount of these resources. They will eventually run out although there is a lot of disagreement about when that might be. 79. Apart from nuclear power, which currently provides less than 10% of the world’s energy, the other alternative is energy from renewable sources. These include hydropower, biofuels (made mostly from crops), wind power and solar power, and together they currently provide around 15% of the world’s energy. Some scientists think renewable energy is the great hope for the future not only because it won’t run out but also because it is less risky than nuclear power and produces far fewer greenhouse gases than burning fossil fuels. 80. Other scientists, however, believe we will never produce enough renewable energy to fill the gap when fossil fuels begin to run out. That is why, even while watching the very worrying events in Japan, they argue that nuclear power will always have to be part of the solution to the world’s energy problems. Section D Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Frogs, toads and salamanders usually make us think of green, slimy little monsters. These monsters actually belong to a very special class of animals called the amphibians. Amphibians can live both onland and in the water. They commonly inhabit ponds, rivers, marshes and other wetlands. Today, amphibians are becoming extinct very quickly from all the six continents where they are found. More than 25 countries are reporting sharp drops in the populations of amphibians. In some places, embryos (胚胎) are dying; in others, adults are missing. Why are they dying off? Scientists blame human interference. Industrial waste and toxic gases given out by factories, manufacturing plants and cars are steadily poisoning the breeding grounds of amphibians. Chemicals such as sulphur dioxide rise high into the atmosphere and mix with rain. This makes the rain acidic and thus kills off delicate amphibian embryos. More rare species of amphibians are already gone. Costa Rica's Golden toads have not been seen since 1989. The Australian Gastric Brooding frogs are extinct. Leopard frog numbers are dropping in the Rocky Mountains. Leopard frogs live in the wetland regions in these areas. The wetlands are being drained to make way for highways, industry and new housing. Another threat to the amphibians is the increased ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet rays come from the sun and are extremely harmful to living things. They can cause skin cancer in humans. Luckily for us, ultraviolet rays are blocked by a thick layer of ozone above the earth's atmosphere. Ozone is a special kind of oxygen which absorbs ultraviolet radiation. Now, the ozone layer is being destroyed by chemicals called CFC's which are given off by factories. A hole in the ozone layer was discovered over Antarctica in the late 1980’s. As a result, more ultraviolet rays are reaching the earth and more amphibians are dying. Just as the emergence of new infectious diseases such as Bird Flu are a threat to human and animal populations across the world, amphibian species are also facing their most significant threat from a little understood disease. A chytrid fungus is understood to be of the major causes of frog death across the world. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS) 81._____________________________________indicate that amphibians are dying out quickly. 82.What’s the destructive force of acid rain? _________________________________________________________________________. 83.The ozone layer protects people by _____________________________________________. 84.List at least two major factors that lead to the extinction of amphibians. _________________________________________________________________________. 第II卷 (共45分) . Translation Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets. 85. 听到要放假的消息,我们都很兴奋。

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Beat the Burglar Don‘t invite crime—take basic, sensible precautions. Your house and property are valuable and must be properly protected. When you buy a lock, you buy time—and this is the one thing a burglar can‘t afford. Most thieves are casual opportunists to whom the best deterrents are delay and noise which could mean discovery. When you leave it –lock it!First of all, fit security locks to all doors and windows and a safety chain on the front door. Secondly, use them! And use them every time you go out, even if it‘s only for a short time. If you have any ladders or tools, don‘t leave them lying about in the garden, lock them away or at least immobilise them.Don‘t rely on ―safe‖ or ―secret‖ places for keys and valuables –nine times out of ten, they are the first place a thief will look. When you move house .…..When you move into a new house, even if it is fitted with security locks, change them. You don‘t know who may have duplicate keys. When you are new to a district, you are particularly vulnerable. Never let anyone that you don‘t know into your house. An official-looking cap is not enough, ask for proof of identity and look at it carefully—if you are still not satisfied, don‘t let the person in.Valuables need special protectionReally valuable items such as jewellery, should be given special protection –preferably by leaving them with your bank. But a small security safe, properly installed, should protect you against all but the most determined burglar. It is also most important to maintain an up-to-date list of valuables and their descriptions. In the case of fine art, paintings, ceramics or jewellery, color photographs can sometimes be of assistance to the police should you be unfortunate enough to have them stolen. Enter the details on the back of the pictures. But don‘t keep such documents in your house, keep them at the bank or with your insurance company.Going on holiday?Don‘t advertise the fact that your home is empty. Do remember to cancel the milk and newspapers and also to draw curtains back. Don‘t leave notes for tradesmen and try not to talk about your holidays and future plans loudly in public.Operate a‖Good Neighbour‖scheme to ensure that mail is taken in, the house checked regularly and that lights are put on. If you plan to be away for a long time, make sure that your lawn is cut.Call at your local police station and tell them you are going away. Make sure that they know who has your spare key and how you can be contacted in case of trouble.Especially at holiday time, don‘t leave cash or valuables in the house –take them with you or lodge them with the bank.65. According to the document which is issued by the Metropolitan Police, London, which of thefollowing does not belong to valuables?A. jewelleryB. fine artC. newspapersD. paintings66. The word duplicate in When you move house ….is closest in meaning to______.A. originalB. copyC. copperD. delicate67. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?A. Call at your local police station and tell them you are going away.B. Do remember to cancel the milk and newspapers when you are going on holiday.C. When you move into a new house, you must change security locks.D. Do leave any ladders or tools lying about in your garden.68. The document tells the residents how to _______.A.deal with their personal properties properlyB.invite anyone that you don‘t know into your houseC.advertise the fact that your house is emptyD.keep valuable items at home(B)The inhabitants of the earth are divided not only by race, nation, religion or ideology, but also, in a sense, by their position in time. Examining the present population of the globe, we find a tiny group who still live, hunting and food-foraging, as men did millions of years ago. Others, the vast majority of mankind, depend not on bear-hunting or berry-picking, but on agriculture. They live, in many aspects, as their ancestors did centuries ago. These two groups taken together compose perhaps 70 percent of all living human beings. They are the people of the past.By contrast, somewhat more than 25 percent of the earth‘s population can be found in the industrialized societies. They lead modern lives. They are products of the first half of the twentieth century, moulded by mechanization and mass education, brought up with lingering memories of their own country‘s agricultural past. They are, in fact, the people of the present. The remaining 2 or 3 percent of the world‘s population, however, are no longer people of either the past or the present. For within the main centers of technological and cultural change, in Santa Monica, California and Cambridge, Massachusetts, in New York and London, and Tokyo, are millions of men and women who can already be said to be living in the way of life of the future. Trend-makers often without being aware of it, they live today as millions will live tomorrow. And while they account for only a few percent of the global population today, they already form an international nation of the future in our midst. They are the advance agents of men, the earliest citizens of the world-wide super-industrial society now in the throes of(正在做) birth. What makes them different from the rest of mankind? Certainly, they are richer, better educated, more mobile than the majority of the human race. They also live longer. But what specifically marks the people of the future is the fact that they are already caught up in a new, stepped-up pace of life. They ―live faster‖ than the people around them.69. The main argument in this passage is that ______.A a small percent of the world‘s population is already ―living in the future‖B.the majority should see what the future will be likeC.the new ―pace of life‖ is actually nothing newD.however we live, we must all face an increased pace of life70. The ― people of the present‖ here refers to those who ______.A.rely on their county‘s agricultural pastB.spend their time examining different racesC.have been shaped by industrialization and mass educationD.are constantly trying to change life as they see it71. From what the author says, ―trend-makers‖ are people who ______.A.live in large cities all over the worldB.dream about the futureC.set the pattern of life for the futureD.make changes in culture and technology(C)For several days I (Jane Eyre) saw little of Mr. Rochester. In the morning he seemed much occupied with business, and in the afternoon gentlemen from the neighourhood called and sometimes stayed to dine with him. When his foot was well enough, he rode out a great deal.During this time, all my knowledge of him was limited to occasional meetings about the house, when he would sometimes pass me coldly, and sometimes bow and smile. His changes of manner did not offend me, because I saw that I had nothing to do with the cause of them. One evening, several days later, I was invited to talk to Mr. Rochester after dinner. He was sitting in his armchair, and looked not quite so severe, and much less gloomy. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were bright, probably with wine. As I was looking at him, he suddenly turned, and asked me, ―Do you think I‘m handsome, Miss Eyre?‖The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realized it: ‗No, sir.‖―Ah, you really are unusual! You are a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude.‖―Sir, I‘m sorry. I should have said that beauty doesn‘t matter, or something like that,‖―N o, you shouldn‘t! I see, you criticize my appearance, and then you stab(刺)me in the back! You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you. But perhaps I go too fast. Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance(抵消)your few good points.I thought to myself that he might have too. He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly, ―Y es, you‘re right. I have plenty of faults. I went the wrong way when I was twenty-one, and have never found the right path again. I might have been very different. I might have been as good as you, and perhaps wiser. I am not a bad man, take my word for it, but I have done wrong. It wasn‘t my character, but circumstances which were to blame. Why do I tell you all this? Because you‘re the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to, because you‘re sympathetic and give them hope.‖It seemed he had quite a lot to talk to me. He didn‘t seem to like to finish the talk quickly, as was the case for the first time.―Don‘t be afraid of me, Miss Eyre.‖ He continued. ―Y ou don‘t relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood school has had on you. But in time you will be more natural with me, and laugh, and speak freely. You‘re like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you‘ll fly very high. Good night.‖72. At the beginning Miss Eyre 's impressions of Mr. Rochester were all EXCEPT _______.A. busyB. sociableC. friendlyD. changeable73. Why did Mr. Rochester say" . . . and then you stab me in the back!" (in para. 7)?A. Because Jane had intended to kill him with a knife.B. Because Jane had intended to be more critical.C. Because Jane had regretted having talked to him.D. Because Jane had said something else to correct herself.74. From what Mr. Rochester told Miss Eyre, we can conclude that he wanted to _______.A. tell her all his troublesB. tell her his life experienceC. change her opinion of himD. change his circumstances75. At the end of the passage, Mr. Rochester sounded_______.A. rudeB. coldC. friendlyD. encouragingSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76.An Iowa high school counselor gets a call from a parent protesting the ―C ‖ her child receivedon an assignment. ―The parent argued every point in the essay, ‖recalls the counselor, who soon realized whythe mother was so disappointed about my grade. ―It became apparent that she‘d written it. ‖77. a priority at their school, but only 25%described their experience working with parents as ―very satisfying.‖ When asked to choose me biggest challenge they fac e, 31% of them quoted involving parents and communicating with them as their top choice. 73% of new teachers said too many parents treat schools and teachers as enemies.78. At a time when competition is rising and resources are limited, when battles over testing force schools to adjust their priorities, when cell phones and e-mail speed up the information flow and all kinds of private ghosts and public quarrels slip into the parent-teacher conference, it‘s harder for both sides to step back and breathe deeply and look at the goals they share.79 Everyone says the parent-teacher conference should be pleasant, civilized, a kind of dialogue where parents and teachers build partnership. But what most teachers feel, and certainly what all parents feel, is anxiety and panic.80. When a teacher asks parents to be partners, he or she doesn't necessarily mean Mom or Dad should be camping in the classroom. Research shows that though students benefit modestly from having parents involved at school, what happens at home matters much more. According to research based on the National Education Longitudinal Study, a sample of nearly 25,000 eighth graders, among four main areas of parental involvement(home discussion, home supervision. school communication, and school participation), home discussion was the most strongly related.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, "Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience."How right they were. Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends."Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, "I can do it!" when others shout, "No, you can't."It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn't let up on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping. We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant's delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age.At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. Music, for Casals, was a medicine that made life a never ending adventure. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, " Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer, I believe, lies in the word itself. "Enthusiasm" comes from the Greek and means "God within." And what is God within is but an abiding sense of love -- proper love of self (self-acceptance) and, from that, love of others.Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a part-time avocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons, the executive who handcrafts furniture.Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended bouts of depression that had plagued her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, "I am tempted to call Layton a genius." Elizabeth has rediscovered her enthusiasm. We can't afford to waste tears on "might-have-been." We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after "what-can-be."We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses -- finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS.)81. What is this passage mainly about?82. "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm," means we can achieve nothing.83. ―God within‖( in para.8 ) means .84. The last sentence (in para.10) We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after"what-can-be." means .

While that remains subpar, economists believe activity will 47 even stronger in the final three months of the year. The ISM 48 of new orders rose to its highest level since April, and the export index also improved, although modestly."That should keep some momentum going," said Sean Incremona, an economist at 4Cast in New York. We use cars, buses or trains to get to work; our children are 54 to schools; elevators and lifts have replaced conventional stairs in shopping centers, offices and apartment blocks. Washing machines, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and electric mowers all reduce the effort required to 55 a clean and tidy home. Almost one third of adults spend over ten hours sitting down every day, 56 up to a staggering of average 32years and four months over a lifetime. 57 surprising, then, that researchers 58 this lifestyle for our weight gain.Of course, our diets have changed, too, 59 the fact is that we consume fewer calories now than in the 1960s. The document tells the residents how to .A. deal with their personal properties properlyB. invite anyone that you don't know into your houseC. advertise the fact that your house is emptyD. keep valuable items at home(B)The inhabitants of the earth are divided not only by race, nation, religion or ideology, but also, in a sense, by their position in time. These two groups taken together compose perhaps 70 percent of all living human beings; They are the people of the past.By contrast, somewhat more than 25 percent of the earth's population can be found in the industrialized societies. They lead modern lives. They are products of the first half of the twentieth century, moulded by mechanization and mass education, brought up with lingering memories of their own country's agricultural past. They are, in fact, the people of the present. The remaining 2 or 3 percent of the world's population, however, are no longer people of either the past or the present. They are the advance agents of men, the earliest citizens of the world-wide super-industrial society now in the throes (正在做) birth. What makes them different from the rest of mankind? Certainly, they are richer, better educated, more mobile than the majority of the human race. They also live longer. But what specifically marks the people of the future is the fact that they are already caught up in a new, stepped-up pace of life. They "live faster" than the people around them.69. The main argument in this passage is that .A. a small percent of the world's population is already "living in the future"B. the majority should see what the future will be likeC. the new "pace of life" is actually nothing newD. however we live, we must all face an increased pace of life70. The "people of the present" here refers to those who .A. rely on their county's agricultural pastB. spend their time examining different racesC. have been shaped by industrialization and mass educationD. are constantly trying to change life as they see it71. From what the author says, "trend-makers" are people who .A. live in large cities all over the worldB. dream about the futureC. set the pattern of life for the futureD. make changes in culture and technology(C)For several days I (Jane Eyre) saw little of Mr. As I was looking at him, he suddenly turned, and asked me, "Do you think I'm handsome, Miss Eyre?"The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realized it: 'No, sir.""Ah, you really are unusual! You are a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude.""Sir, I'm sorry. I should have said that beauty doesn't matter, or something like that,""No, you shouldn't! I see, you criticize my appearance, and then you stab (刺) me in the back! You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you. But perhaps I go too fast. Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance (抵消) your few good points.I thought to myself mat he might have too. He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly, "Yes, you're right. I have plenty of faults. 1 went the wrong way when 1 was twenty-one, and have never found the right path again. I might have been very different. 1 might have been as good as you, and perhaps wiser. I am not a bad man, take my word for it, but I have done wrong. It wasn't my character, but circumstances which were to blame. Why do I tell you all this? Because you're the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to, because you're sympathetic and give them hope."It seemed he had quite a lot to talk to me. He didn't seem to like to finish the talk quickly, as was the case for the first time."Don't be afraid of me, Miss Eyre." He continued. "You don't relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood school has had on you. But in time you will be more natural with me, and laugh, and speak freely. You're like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you'll fly very high. Good night."72. At the beginning Miss Eyre's impressions of Mr. Rochester were all EXCEPT .A. busyB. sociableC. friendlyD. changeable73. Why did Mr. Rochester say" ... and then you stab me in the back!" (in para.7)?A. Because Jane had intended to kill him with a knife.B. Because Jane had intended to be more critical.C. Because Jane had regretted having talked to him.D. Because Jane had said something else to correct herself.74. From what Mr. Rochester told Miss Eyre, we can conclude that he wanted to .A. Tell her all his troublesB. tell her his life experienceC. change her opinion of himD. change his circumstances75. At the end of the passage, Mr. Rochester sounded .A. rudeB. coldC. friendlyD. encouragingSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76.An Iowa high school counselor gets a call from a parent protesting the "C" her child received on an assignment 'The parent argued every point in the essay, "recalls the counselor, who soon realized why themother was so disappointed about my grade, 'it became apparent that she'd written it."77. In a survey, 90% of new teachers agreed that involving parents in their children's education is a priority at their school, but only 25% described their experience working with parents as "very satisfying." When asked to choose me biggest challenge they face, 31 % of them quoted involving parents and communicating with them as their top choice. 73 % of new teachers said too many parents treat schools and teachers as enemies.78. At a time when competition is rising and resources are limited, when battles over testing force schools to adjust their priorities, when cell phones and e-mail speed up the information flow and all kinds of private ghosts and public quarrels slip into the parent-teacher conference, it's harder for both sides to step back and breathe deeply and look at the goals they share.79. Everyone says the parent-teacher conference should be pleasant, civilized, a kind of dialogue where parents and teachers build partnership. But what most teachers feel, and certainly what all parents feel, is anxiety and panic:80. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Years ago, when 1 started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, "Barbara, be enthusiastic! It is the inner voice that whispers, "I can do it!" when others shout, "No, you cant."It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote," Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer, I believe, lies in the word itself. "Enthusiasm" comes from the Greek and means "God within." And what is God within is but an abiding sense of love ~ proper love of self (self-acceptance) and, from that, love of others.Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. We can't afford to waste tears on "might-have-been." We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after "what-can-be."We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses ~ finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS.)81.
