Flying cars, human-like robots, interplanetary travel, time travel, and contact with alien life are all fairly normal for science-fiction stories. For this reason, science fiction is usually regarded as an escape from reality and is generally considered to deal with subjects that are far removed from the real issues with which we deal on Earth in 2010.However, I think this line of thinking misses the entire point of science fiction — namely, that these stories portray the potential of humanity under almost any imaginable situation. There have been many stories about astronauts trying to destroy an asteroid that is headed straight for Earth or about scientists planning to colonize another planet because Earth's resources are disappearing. Books and movies about these subjects are often seen as escapist entertainment, and nothing more. However, it is very likely that, one day, an asteroid will be headed straight at Earth. It is also a fact that, eventually, humans will use up all of Earth's resources. When that happens, we will need to think of an alternative plan for survival. When viewed in this light, these stories don't seem so far-fetched.Another reason that science-fiction stories are seen as far removed from our lives is because of the incredibly advanced technology. Think about it, though. Science-fiction stories have been around since the 19th century. The "advanced technology" that amazed readers back then has most become reality—things like airplanes, hands-free telephones, and computers. Who's to say that the unbelievable technology in today's stories won't be tomorrow's reality?Of course science fiction is still fiction. The stories aren't true and they are a wonderful way for people to let theirimaginations run wild. However, history has clearly shown that science fiction has a wonderful ability to come true. We just need a bit of patience and let science catch up to science fiction.41. This style of writing would best be described as _______.A. expositoryB. narrativeC. argumentativeD. descriptive42. Which of the following best sums up the author's main point?A. Science fiction is usually regarded as an escape from reality.B. Science-fiction stories have been around since the 19th century.C. At least, it didn't make sense to me.It seemed like every few minutes there was a(n) and something would blow up for noapparent reason. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.I have had just about enough of being treated like a second-class citizen, simply because I happen to be that put-upon member of society---- a customer. The more I go into shops and hotels, banks and post offices, railway stations, airports and the like, the more I’m convinced that things are being run solely to suit the firm, the system, or the union. There seems to be a deceptive new motto for so-called “service”organization---- Staff Before Service. How often, for example, have you queued for what seems like hours at the post office or the supermarket because there weren’t enough staff on duty to man all the service grilles or checkout counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to hire cashiers and counter staff. Yet supermarket, hinting darkly at higher prices, claim that uncovering all their cash registers at any one time would increase overheads. And the post office says we cannot expect all their service grillesto be occupied “at times when demand is low”.It’s the same with hotels. Because waiters and kitchen staff must finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is cut short. As for us guests, we just have to put up with it. There’s also the nonsense of so many friendly hotel night porters having been thrown out of their jobs in the interests of “efficiency”and replaced by coin-guzzling machines which dispense everything from lager to laxatives. No to mention the creeping threat of the tea-making kit in your room: a kettle with a mixed collection of tea bags, plastic milk cartons and lump sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw tea bag? I don’t, especially when I am paying for “service”.Can it be stopped, this erosion of service, this growing attitude that the customer is always a nuisance? I fervently hope so because it’s happening, sadly, in all walks of life. Our only hope is to hammer home our indignation whenever and wherever we can and, if all else fails, bring back into practice that other, older slogan---- and Take Our Custom Elsewhere.21.The writer feels that nowadays a customer is ___________.A.the recipient of privileged treatmentB.unworthy of proper considerationC.classified by society as superiorD.the victim of modern organization22.The author argues that the quality of service is changing because ________.A.the customers’ demands have changedB.the staff receive more consideration than the customersC.the customers’ needs have increasedD.the staff are less considerate than their employers23.According to the writer, long queues at counters are caused by ________.A.difficulties in recruiting staffB.inadequate staffing arrangementsC.staff being made redundantck of cooperation staff24.Service organizations claim that keeping the checkout counters manned wouldresult in ____.A. a rise in the price for providing servicesB.demands by cashiers for more moneyC.insignificant benefits for the customersD.the need to purchase expensive equipment25.The disappearance of old-style hotel porters can be attributed to the fact that_______.A.few people are willing to do this type of workB.machines are more reliable than human beingsC.the personal touch is appreciated less nowadaysD.automation has provided cheaper alternativesPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Psychologists take opposing views of how external rewards, from warm praise to cold cash, affect motivation and creativity. Behaviorists, who study the relation between actions and their consequences, argue that rewards can improve performance at work and school. cognitive researchers, who study various aspects of mental life, maintain that rewards often destroy creativity by encouraging dependence on approval and gifts from others. The latter view has gained many supporters, especially among educators. But the careful use of small monetary rewards sparks creativity in grade-school children, suggesting that properly presented inducements indeed aid inventiveness, according to a study in the June Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.“If kids know they’re working for a reward and can focus on a relatively challenging task, they show the most creativity,”says Robert Eisenberger of the University of Delaware in Newark. “But it’s easy to kill creativity by giving rewards for poor performance or creating too much anticipation for rewards.” A teacher who continually draws attention to rewards or who hands out high grades for ordinary achievement ends up with uninspired students, Eisenberger holds. As an example of the latter point, he notes growing efforts at major universities to tighten grading standards and restore failing grades. In earlier grades, the use of so-called token economies, in which students handle challenging problems and receive performance-based points toward valued rewards, shows promise in raising effort and creativity, the Delaware psychologist claims.26. Psychologists are divided with regard to their attitude toward ________.A.the choice between spiritual encouragement and monetary rewardsB.the amount of monetary rewards for students’ creativityC.the study of relationship between actions and their consequencesD.the effects of external rewards on students’ performance27.What is the response of many educators to external rewards for their students?A. These four young men were just doing what they want to do—play music and not work. They changed pop music by singing about the least understood emotion—love.Originally, the Beatles started with John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison. It was only when they were already performing as the Beatles in1962 that Ringo Starr joined.Ringo took the place of Pete Best as drummer when the groups were performing at the Cavern—a famous Liverpool club in a 19-century building. The reaction of the crowd was not positive. “We want Pete”, the fans cried out when Ringo started to play. He was soon to feel welcome, though, when less than three months later, in December 1962, the group’s first hit record, Love Me Do, got into the charts.Just three months after that, Please Me reached number one. It was followed by many other hits and suddenly the Beatles were superstars. They had a great effect on teenage girls. They shouted about love, their songs were strong and youthful and it was exciting when they sang. The Beatles were also relaxed about their lives. When asked how long they would be popular, McCartney said: “We never used to think much about the future. But then everyone said, “How long will it last?” So you start thinking about it. But there’s no answer. It remains to be seen.”The impression of living for the present, of being happy and carefree and going through life without effort was a large part of the attraction of early Beatles.31.Please Me is a song about ______.A.workB.loveC.the city of LiverpoolD.the understanding of emotions32.The word “originally” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.A.fortunatelyB.for exampleC.at firstD.one after another33.When Ringo joined the Beatles as a drummer, ________.A.many teenage girls love to see himB.they were already superstars with a few hitsC.he failed to perform as well as othersD.those fans did not accepts him34.It can be seen from the passage that the Beatles, while doing their music, _____.A.were sure they would remain popularB.did not know too much about their futureC.worked hard to make sure they would succeedD.cared very much about other people’s opinions35.The pronoun “it” in “ how long will it last” refers to ________.A.the popularity of the BeatlesB.people’s memory of the BeatlesC.the number one songD.the Beatles’s stay in LiverpoolPassage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. As one climbs the ladder of success, education plays a most important role. General Electric understands this importance and through its publications(出版物)attempts to answer questions young people who try to climb the ladder commonly raise: Why should I work? Why should I stick to my studies? Why should I study English? Why should I read?Even those students who have to leave school and find work can advance --- if they keep on learning, and make up for the advantages missed by leaving school. The person, however, who sticks to his studies and prepares himself for a particular skill starts out on the job with an advantage over the school dropout. When a person is being interviewed (面试) for a job, he is almost always asked: What subjects did you take? How well did you do in them? For a person’s school record and his attitude toward education usually shows what he will do on the job.Work is the meat and potatoes of the meal of life. But more than these, satisfying work makes a person know that he is worthwhile. The work that a student does both inside and outside the classroom prepares him for his career. Good school marks, healthy involvement in activities after class, and summer or part-time work experience make an unbeatable student record. The ability to express ideas in writing and in speaking heads the list of requirements for success. A good command of English and knowledge of good literature (文学) are marks of an educated person. What a person writes and what he says determines in part how fast he can climb up the success ladder.Reading is our most important means of learning; we gain information by reading and by being able to understand what we read. Self-education is largely reading. Reading puts us “in the know,” and we can listen wisely and hold our own in speaking. Almost all that is worth knowing is in the words, and the more of these words we put into our minds, the more our mind can hold.36.
