Papers
The ancient Romans celebrated a holiday for lovers more than 2,000 years ago. As part of the celebration, girls wrote their names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container. Boys reached into the container and pulled out the name of a girl. That girl became his girlfriend or sweetheart for a year.

Speaking of Flower
• Do you know the language of flowers? Each kind of flower has a unique meaning. When you give flowers to somebody, you are telling them something, even if you do not speak a word. Take pink carnations for example. There is a story that tells of Mary, the mother of Jesus, crying for her son as he carried the cross. Pink carnations grew from where her tears fell on the ground, and became the symbol of a mother's love. People often give roses to the people they love, but different colors have different meanings. For example, white roses are a symbol of innocence. Red roses mean deep love, and pink roses are for happiness. As for yellow roses, they mean envy, so always be careful which color you choose. You just might be sending the wrong message!

Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? The history of Valentine's Day is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers ①in secret. ②When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine ③fell in love with a young girl — his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still ④in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure.Valentine's Day is not a public holiday. Government offices, stores, schools and other organizations are open as usual. Public transit systems run on their regular schedule. Restaurants may be busier than usual as many people go out for an evening with their spouse or partner. Valentine's Day is also a very popular date for weddings. The most common Valentine's Day symbols are the heart, particularly in reds and pinks, and picturesor models of Cupid. Cupid is usually portrayed as a small winged figure with a bow and arrow. In mythology, he uses his arrow to strike the hearts of people. People who have fallen in love are sometimes said to be struck by Cupid's arrow.

Now, we usually celebrate the Saint Valentine’s Day and the Chinese Valentine’s Day. So today I will introduce the origin of the two days.
First, the Saint Valentine’s Day, The origins of Valentine's Day are not known for sure. One of the most accepted, is that it originated from St. Valentine, the Roman who was earlier jailed and then martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., after which the day became a symbol for lovers' celebrations. Another more romantic tale says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Gradually, St. Valentine became the guardian saint of lovers and February 14 became the day for exchanging love messages around the world.
Second, the origin of Chinese Valentine’s Day, Chinese Valentine's Day is on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar. A love story for this day is about the 7th daughter of Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherd. It is said that Cowherd from the mundane world and Weaving-Maid from heaven loved each other. They were separated by the Milky Way at the order of the Queen Mother of the Western Heaven, and were permitted to meet only once a year. Cowherd and Weaving-Maid became the stars Altair and Vega. They would meet on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month every year, with the magpies making a bridge to help them cross the Milky Way.
Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. Then how we celebrate the Valentine’s Day?
In china, for man: flowers or chocolate (in a red, heart-shaped box) to their girlfriends or wives. The most classic form is sending Roses.
Sometimes they put their love message in a heart –shaped box, perfume, jewelry or a picture with a Heart and Cupid armed with bow and arrow to express love.
For women: They can send a funny card, along with small gifts to their boyfriends.
Many couples arrange romantic dinners by candle light or a big meal for this occasion. While Some couples prefer to traveling or taking some special exercise on the day or just go shopping on Valentine’s Day.
Love is one of the most beautiful feelings. It is an essential part of life, whether ancient or modern- it is never out of season. I wish all the people in the world find their true love. That’s all, thank you!。
