Nature vs Nurture

“Nature”vs “Nurture”With the improvement of civilization, an increasing number of studies are interested about what factors shape human characteristics and behaviors while this topic has sustained for many centuries since the origin of philosophy. There is numerous evidence that both environmental and genetic factors play an important role in human personality. This essay aims to discuss the relationship between nature and nurture and point out how biological inheritance and environment strongly influence on individuals.Dockery and Reiss (1999) argue that some human temperament, especially appeared in early stages of an individual’s life, are the performances of their inherited characteristics. Perhaps genes is the only difference between the babies who have not influenced by circumstances so that their disparate performances are from nature. Furthermore, the different types of human talents are offered by heredity such as arts, logic and sports. According to Beckett (2002), genes provide human opportunities to be excellent and professional in some fields, while part of human may achieve and maximize their potential once they have it. For instance, NBA is the most highest stage of basketball games that the players can earn wealth, reputation and attention. However, most of them have unusual abilities of speed, balance and power, thus inherited characteristics have enormously contributed to their success . Moreover, Apicella, Dreber and Campbel (2008) concluded that high levels of the hormone testosterone, which decide by genes, makes males to be more predisposed to make risky decisions. This evidence is a support of the view that genes affect people’s decisions, behaviors and temperaments. Consequently, nature plays an important role in the individual’s behaviors, attributes and characteristics. In addition, Beckett (2002) points out that our different appearance is because of genetic diversity such as hair color, eyes color and facial features. For example, Asian might has single eyelid while most of European has double eyelids.By contrast, environmental factors possibly are more significant than genetic factor in human growth. For example, Wilson(cited in Chance,2009) described that there has low per capita murder with governmental control and lower population density. Human tend to be more aggressive when there are more competitions, oppression and discrimination. In addition, people do not realize the difference between right and wrong as long as they do not have concept about morality and law. However, our blood do not contain the knowledge about what is civilization and humanity, thus the people who is lack of experience and education may make irreparable mistake of their own life. To some extent, life experiences and environmental factors finally replace the genes to shape our behaviors and characteristics. For instance, when people use violence to protect their homeland and family during the war, they are considered to be national heroes. But if they achieve their own aims through violent method, they would be known as shameless criminal. In others word, inherited characteristics decide which method we tend to use while the culture and morality define our behaviors’ quality. Human more likely employ the method which can provide sense of identity. Furthermore, Guo (2005) described that the twins with 100 percent similar inherited characteristics will have different traits because of environmental conditions such as lifestyle and diet. For instance, the height of 18 to 28 years old generation of Chinese has increased almost 10 cm from their parents generation. This change was the result of abundant food such as more milk. Meanwhile, countless teenager become myope under the high pressure of study.Nevertheless, Chance (2009) believe that heredity and experience cannot be separated while both of them have contribution on unique individual. For example, most of successful people perfectly combine the intrinsic potential and hardworking. They stimulate their potential with insistent practice and spirit of never give up. There is a quotation from Thomas Edison (1847-1931) that “reference, prudence as your brother and hope as your sentry”, which has supported this opinion. In conclusion, inherited characteristics play a major role at least for three parts of an individual which are early stages temperament, individual potential and personal appearance. However, the environment influence all aspects of human growth. Thus our own life experience and world view is the reason of why we are unique existence. Make an analogy to architecture, “nature”like the foundation while “nurture” is all the process of building construction.Bibliography:1-Dockery,M.and Reiss,M.(1999).Behaviour.Cambridge:Cambridge University Press2--Beckett,C.(2002).Human Growth and Development.London:Sage.3-Dreber A, Campbell B, Gray PB, Hoffman M, Little AC (November 2008). Therefore, before proceeding to the essay outline, you should familiarize yourself with an understanding of nature vs. nurture. So, let us just discuss nature vs. nurture deeply.Understanding Nature vs. NurtureNatureNature is all about those characteristics that are inherited from genes or from your parents.Nature contributes to the personality through genetics such as:Brain activationNature and behaviourNurtureNurture is about those characteristics which develops from experiences and environment. Nurture contributes to the personality through influences such as:Parental relationshipsEnvironment and cultureNature vs. Nurture DebateNature vs. Nurture is a debate about whether behaviour, personality and human culture caused by nature or nurture. In this debate nature id defined as the genetic and hormone based behaviour, while nurture is defined as the experience and environment.History of the Nature vs. Nurture DebateThis debate is mainly about the effect of the genes on human personalities. In the 1960s, the people influence theory of behaviourism. The founder of behaviourism was John Watson. It claimed that human behaviours are acquired through conditioning. His experiment was successful in the beginning but failure at the end. Because he ignored the important genetic factors, his ideas got criticised.Factors affecting mental health of natureNature is the important factor in the development of health problems. For example- depression, bipolar etc.We cannot denied the important genetic factors. The development of mental illness is not entirely genetic. For e.g. In the case of identical twin, if one develops the condition than there will be 50% chance of developing the same condition in the other twin.Factors affecting mental health of nurtureThere are certain genetic factors which may create problem for particular illness. The condition will not develop with less severity. In addition, the habits of parents, friends contribute to the development of an addiction.Nature vs Nurture in childrenThe influences of nature vs nurture in children are:In Terms of PersonalityInfluence of the parents–The habits of a child and that of a parent is similar in many ways. The child usually follows his parent’s habits. They should spend quality time with their children’s. This suggests that the bonding between theparent and a child is not from the birth. But the parents interact with their children by birth. It is clear that parents must make sure that they create secure environment. An effect of nature-As we all know that personality development is a lifelong process. Nature use the genetic coding to help in the development and it impart some positive and the negative traits to an individual. The children develop their personality or bent towards certain behaviour which parents doesn’t indicate. In such situation, nature is at play in developing ch ild’s personality. In terms of IntelligenceNature–The individual’s ability to achieve greatness indicates the reason of being successful because of their parent’s intelligence. As a result the development in the early skillsshows that child was “born smart”. In this psychologists are mainly involving in two areas. Firstly, it includes the intelligence of an individual. Secondly, other use to develop and refine the existing intelligence assessments.Nurture–It includes the child’s educational background and how his parents have raised him. The credit of the child’s success goes to the school system. Applications of nature and nurtureNatureDrug therapies treat the behavioural and psychological problems. It can also use to treat the depression.NurtureYou can adopt your environment influences, if your behaviour is liable and optimistic. For e.g. if you want to help others then you should have a positive attitude towards life.Nature and Nurture characteristicsAn individual tends to change the responses in other people. The characteristics are:Temperament– It is the way a young child acts and responds to different situations. They refer to the behavioural changes which do not occur due to parenting or caregiving. With a little understanding, parents can avoid frustration in their children and themselves.Natural Differences– Every child is different from each other. So, it’s also obvious that theiradaption habits also differ. Some finish their task early as compared to others. As a parent, you must ensure that they are handling it with care and quality.Nurturing Success– The important points for the caregivers areFirstly, you can’t change the temperamental traits.Secondly, you should be prepared to deal difficult aspects of your child’s behaviour. Either you create the conflict or help them to have positive emotional and social behaviours.Gender Differences: Nature vs. NurtureReaction of the people differs from boys and girls. This happens due to the expectation of masculine and feminine characteristics. Gender differences is an ongoing debate and the main reasons behind this is the social and biological differences.Evolutionary PsychologyThe evolutionary psychology refers to the differences between the gender and sexuality because of evolution. This results in the strategies of differentiating between the men and women for success. This theory helps in obtaining the reproductive skills and the generational success of the genes passed on from the one generation to the other.Factors of genes and genderGenes plays an important role in differentiating the physical looks of males and females. However genes and chromosomes contains the differences that can lead to the physical features that can appear abnormal. Genes depicts the correlation between the indi vidual’s genders.Cognitive Social Learning TheoryIn this theory the people learn from one another through observing, modelling etc. It also creates the bridge between the cognitive and behaviourist theories. People do not learn the new behaviour individually, they learn through the success or failure. Albert Bandura’s stated this theory. He explains that how the children’s learn in social environments by observing the behaviours of others. He observed that the adults are acting aggressively. They got thepunishment after acting like this. He notices that children’s are not imitating the aggressive behaviour as compared to the adults.Nature vs. Nurture case studiesTwin studyFrancis Galton was the first person who did this study. This study reveals that genes play important role in the development of certain personality characteristics. In this, 80% of identical twins feel closer to each other as compared to their friends.Adoption studyTo evaluate genetic and environmental influences you design Adoption study. Thisstudy provide some challenges related to the adoption. It has increased the privacy laws and concerns related to the biological parents. Recent changes in adoption study has occurred by combining the techniques and data of adoptees.Nature and Nurture in psychologyThe nature vs. nurture debate is oldest issue in psychology. The branches of psychology often take one approach from the other approach. Biology and environment both play an important role in the scientific world. They give more priority to their feelings rather than others.CholericThey are born leader, dynamic and active; independent and self-sufficient; seek the practical solutions to problems; and move quickly to action.Similarly, the philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau theorised that people were born essentially good. Over the years, research done on this controversy and at the end everyone agrees that both nature and nurture play important role in human development.Genes and behaviourThe genes are unable to assess the roles played by genetic factor in an individual’s behaviour. Scientists are able to develop the screening test and then diagnose the children shortly after birth. From the genetic point of view, physical traits such as color of a person’s hair haver higher heritable traits than behaviour.MAJOR PARTS OF NATURE AND NURTUREThe parts of nature and nurture are:GENES AND SUCCESSPeople are born with talent, which results in the specialisation at an early stage. The relative importance of natural talent and training is a frequent topic of discussion when people try to explain different levels of ability in, for example, sport, art or music.Obviously, education systems are based on the belief that all children can effectively be taught to acquire different skills, including those associated with sport, art or music. So from our own school experience, we can find plenty of evidence to support the view that a child can acquire these skills with continued teaching and guided practice. However, some people believe that innate talent is what differentiates a person who has been trained to play a sport or an instrument, from those who become good players. In other words, there is more to the skill than a learned technique, and this extra talent cannot be taught, no matter how good the teacher or how frequently a child practices.I personally think that some people do have talents that are probably inherited via their genes. Such talents can give individuals a facility for certain skills that allow them to excel, while more hard-working students never manage to reach a comparable level. But, as with all questions of nature versus nurture, they are not mutually exclusive. Goodmusicians or artists and exceptional sports stars have probably succeeded because of both good training and natural talent. Without the natural talent, continuous training would be neither attractive nor productive, and without the training, the child would not learn how to exploit and develop their talent. In conclusion, I agree that any child can be taught particular skills, but to be really good in areas such as music, art or sport, then some natural talent is required.(281 words)。

剑桥英语5雅思考官范文(大作文+小作文)

剑5 1-1The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The graph shows the increase in the ageing population in Japen, Sweden and the USA. It indicates that the percentage of elderly people in all three countries is expected to increase to almost 25% of the respective populations by the year 2040.In 1940 the proportion of people aged 65 or more stood at only 5% in Japan, approximately 7% in Sweden and 9% in the USA. However, while the figuresfor the Western countries grew to about 15% in around 1990, the figure for Japan dipped to only 2.5% for much of this period, before rising to almost 5% again at the present time.In spite of some fluctuation in the expected percentage, the proportion of older people will probably continue to increase in the next two decades in the three countries. A more dramatic rise is predicted between 2030 and 2040 in Japan, by which time it is though that the proportion of elderly people will be similar in the three countries.剑5 2-2In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.It is quite common these days for young people in many countries to have a break from studying after graduating from high school. The trend is not restricted to rich students who have the money to travel, but is also evident among poorer students who choose to work and become economically independent for a period of time. The reasons for this trend may involve the recognition that a young adult who passes directly from school to university is rather restricted in terms of general knowledge and experience of the world. By contrast, those who have spent some time earning a living or traveling to other places, have a broader view of life and better personal resources to draw on. They tend to be more independent, which is a very important factor in academic study and research, as well as giving them an advantage in terms of coping with the challenges ofstudent life. However, there are certainly dangers in taking time off at that important age. Young adult may end up never returning to their studies or finding it difficult to re-adapt to an academic environment. They may think that it is better to continue in a particular job, or to do something completely different from a university course. But overall, I think this is less likely today, when academic qualifications are essential for getting a reasonable career. My view is that young people should be encouraged to broaden their horizons. That is the best way for them to get a clear perspective of what they are hoping to do with their lives and why. Students with such a perspective are usually the most effective and motivated ones and taking a year off may be the best way to gain this.剑5 3-1The map below is of the town of Garlsdon. A new supermarket (S) is planned for the town. The map shows two possible sites for the supermarket.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The map shows two proposed locations for a new supermarker for the town of Garlsdon. The first potential location(S1) is outside the town itself, and is sited just off the main road to the town of Hindon, lying 12 kms to the north-west. This site in the countryside and so would be able to accommodate a lot of car parking. This would make it accessible to shoppers from both Hindon and Garlsdon who could travel by car. As it is also close to the railway line linking the two towns to Cransdon (25 km to the south-east), a potentially large number of shoppers would also be able to travel by train. In contrast, the suggested location, S2, is right in the town centre, which would be good for local residents. Theoretically the store could be accessed by road or rail from the surrounding towns, including Bransdon, but as the central area is a no-traffic zone, car would be unable to park and access would be difficult.Overall, neither site is appropriate for all the towns, but for customers in Cransdon, Hindon and Garisdon, the out-of-town site (S1) would probably offer more advantages.剑5 4-2Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any experiences we may have in our life.Which do you consider to be the major influence?Today the way we consider human psychology and mental development is heavily influenced by the genetic sciences. We now understand the importance of inherited characteristics more than ever before. Yet we are still unable to decide whether an individual’s personality and development are more influenced by genetic factors (nature) or by the environment(nurture).Research, relating to identical twins, has highlighted how significant inherited characteristics can be for an individual’s life. But whether these characteristics are able to develop within the personality of an individual surely depends onwhether the circumstances allow such a development. It seems that the experiences we have in life are so unpredictable and so powerful, that they can boost or over-ride other influences, and there seems to be plenty of research finding to confirm this.My own view is that there is no one major influence in a person’s life. Instead, the traits we inherit from our parents and the situations and experiences that we encounter in life are constantly interacting. It is the interaction of the two that shapes a person’s personality and dictates how that personality develops. It this were not true, then we would be able to predict the behaviour and character of a person from the moment they were born.In conclusion, I do not think that either nature or nurture is the major influence on a person, but that both have powerful effects. How these factors interact is still unknown today and they remain largely unpredictable in a person’s life.。
