At first, we were very much against the idea because of the noise. “It’s better than watching television or playing computer games in my free time, “Ben argued, “and it’ll keep me out of trouble.” In the end we gave in. “All right,” we said, “but you must consider the rest of the family and the neighbors when you play.”That was just the beginning. Because drums are not the easiest instruments to move, the other members of Ben’s band started appearing at our home with their guitars and other electrical equipment. And so, for several hours a week, the house shakes to the noise of their instruments and their teenage singing. At least Ben’s hobby (爱好) has been good for our health: whenever the bandstart practising, my husband and I go out for a long walk. And I must admitthat, although their music may sound a little strange, they are a friendlyand polite group of young men. I cannot judge their musical skill—after allI didn’t expect my parents’ generation ( 一代人 ) to like the same musicas I did when I was a teenager—but they do play in local clubs for youngpeople at the same time each week. Our main worry is that they won’t spend enough time on their schoolworkbecause of their musical activities, though this hasn’t happened yet. I amalways stressing ( 强调) to Ben how important his studies are. Standing desks have become common across Silicon Valley, offering health benefits to those willing to work on their feet. However, due to their high price, they have failed to catch on until now. Recently, Ikea has brought out Bekant convertible(可变换的) standing desk that can become a normal desk at the touch of a button. The $500 adjustable desk can transform from a standard desk to a standing one, and Ikea hopes it could make the standing desk mainstream.Experts say that changing from a seated to a standing desk can improve productivity. Similar desks have become a common sight at tech firms such as Google, where some employees have even installed treadmill (跑步机) and bicycle desks. The desk is not the first "convertible" on the market. As early as 2013, Stir Kinect brought out an adjustable desk. The $3,890 Stir Kinect desk has a motor to raise and lower itself, changing it into a standing desk or a traditional desk. The desk can even be programmed to move up and down slightly, making it appear to take a gentle breath to remind the user to change their positions. To move between sitting and standing positions, owners simply double tap on the screen. The desk can learn the user's preferences over time and suggest the best seating position. The Stir Kinect desk was created by a team of ex-Apple and Disney engineers. It has a built-in touch screen to control and track movement, and can tell users exactly how many calories they burn by standing during their working day. It also has devices containing power points and USB ports for charging phones, to keep cables hidden."Ikea's height-adjustable desk is great for opening up the lower end of the market, " said JP Labrosse, founder and CEO of Stir.(1)What is the text mainly about?A. Ikea has brought out an adjustable standing desk.B. Silicon Valley offered health benefits to officials.C. Google formed their tech firms to design bicycle desks.D. But she is not alone. Many people have this eating disorder. In the beginning of her story, Kessa is a normal 15-year-old. She is good at many things, especially dancing. She has danced for many years and loves it. One day her dance teacher tells her to continue eating right, but maybe lose a few pounds. Once Kessa hears this, she takes things too far. Instead of cutting down on snacks and junk food, she decides not to eat at all. She does not eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner. She begins losing weight and becomes slimmer (更加苗条的)and slimmer. But she loses weight to a point where she is unhealthy. As her poor eating habits continue, her parents start getting as much help as possible to cure (治疗)their beautiful daughter. But for strong-willed kids like I was, none of these methods were effective.Like many kids, I wasn’t bad; I was bored. Fortunately, my father realized this fairly early on and developed a new form of “discipline(原则)” that produced immediate results and long-term positive effects.Looking back as an adult, my father’s method of making me read theencyclopedia (百科全书)whenever I did something wrong was the best thing he could have done.He would tell me a topic and say, “Learn about the aardvark(土豚)and I’m going to test you shortly after.” It was punishment in the sense that I was forced to。
