国际音标一般来说有广义和狭义之分。
广义上的国际音标并不是指我们学习英语的过程中所见到的音标，而是指IPA音标（The International Phonetic Alphabet），即(广义)国际音标，有一百多个符号。
狭义上的国际音标就是指英语国际音标，更狭义的是指DJ音标。
由于它用来标注英语的发音，一般都把它叫做英语国际音标，后来在国内干脆简称国际音标。
DJ音标和KK音标都是(广义)国际音标中的一种。
(广义)国际音标，是设计来标注国际各种语言的发音的，很多语言学家把(广义)国际音标做局部修改以标记他们所研究的语言，所以国际音标也有很多种。
