1If someone asks me what is important when I am interviewing candidates for a job, I will answer without hesitation, personal quality and qualifications. In my opinion, whether my business team can fulfill a task splendidly or not, it depends on the teamwork, and the staff with good personal quality are very helpful for me to build a harmony and friendly atmosphere for the team, so they can work more happily and efficiently in such a comfortable atmosphere. It is the key to create a great business team. Then qualifications are the basic to ensure the power of my business team. I must pick up the most capable ones among the hundreds of candidates. However, I will not only focus on what a high educational degree the candidates get, I prefer someone who is more experienced. That is why I think personal quality and qualifications are important when I am interviewing candidates for a job. Do you agree with me?3What is important when you are making a job application? Let me introduce some strategies to you. There is an old saying that “Know your enemy and know yourself”. So the first thing you have to do is to know everything about the company, such as the founder, the history, the culture and so on. If you know these well and express to the interviewers, they will feel your great interest and strong eagerness to the job. Also, you should prepare for questions while you are doing some research for the company. The interviewers may raise many questions, they want to get some information from your answer. At last, they make their decisions according to your performance. How can you perform well? First, keep smiling all the time, second, be relax and take it easy, third, answer the questions clearly but not slowly, last, show your confidence in your answer.Remember and practice, you will get the job.2When we are planning a career, we must consider lots of factors, such as qualifications, future trends, policy, economical development and so on. Among these, I think qualifications and future trends are the most important. From my point of view, the higher your qualifications are, the greater your career will be. We have competition always in every position, we have to work hard to strengthen ourselves. For example, there are more and more college student graduating from universities, when we make the same job application that the number of person the company hires is limited, you won’t have priority unless your qualification is better than others. On the other hand, some people always try their best all the time, but they don’t know which direction they should go towards. As a result, they waste too much time and hard work. Knowing the future trends well is meaningful for us to realize which direction suits us so that we can cost less time to achieve more. In summary, planning a career towards a right direction with your high qualifications, you will succeed.5Firstly, appropriate media is the key to advertise your products or service. Why? There are two simple reasons. One is only when your products or service are known by everyone, can they sell well; the other, the media you choose to advertise your products or service must be acceptable to the potential customers, that is what appropriate media means. Nowadays, there are more and more media available to the sellers with the development of information technology, such as TV, newspaper, website, blog and so on. Internet is playing a more and more important role in the fieldof product advertisement. Secondly, competition is an objective factor to force you to make your products or service better and better to meet the need of the customers, a new product ,which is competitive and creative , will be more famous and popular than those ordinary ones. It can help you beat your rivals at last. So appropriate media and competition are important when advertising a product or service.对话:4.A: Good morning, B.B: Good morning. How is everything?A: Not so good. There is a problem waiting for me.B: What is the matter?A: A group of guests from Great Britain are coming to visit our company next week. It’s our duty to give them an impressive trip.A: You are right.B: But you don’t have much time to prepare for the schedule.A: So I am very nervous now.B: Just take it easy, let me help you.A: It is very kind of you to do so. Do you have any good ideas?B: In my experience, the foreigners always are interested in our cultures. They feel curious of everything they see in China. They want to know and even want to have a try when they meet something that they never hear about before.A: Yes, I do agree with you.B: So you can introduce something distinctive to them, such as food, handicrafts, custom and so on.A: Well, your words remind me that next Wednesday is the Dragon Boat Festival, That should be included in our schedule, I can invite our foreign guests to the Pearl River to watch the dragon-boat racing. They must be very excited to enjoy this traditional festival with us.B: That is a great idea.A: During watching the race, I should tell them the origin of the festival and something about the great poet, Qu Yuan, when the race finishes, we can have some traditional food and then visit the Pearl River in the night by ship together.B: No schedule is better than yours. You are so considerate.A: I think out this schedule thanks to your tips.B: However, there are some cultural differences need to be considered.A: Like what?B: For example, the foreigners think shaking hands is polite, they even hug and kiss when they meet their friends. Different countries express their friendliness in different ways, we must consider it.A: I see, I will ask some of my foreign friends to make it clear soon.B: Ok, good luck to you.A: Thank you very much!B: It’s my pleasure.A: See you next week.B: See you.5.A: Good morning, B.B: Good morning. How is everything?A: Not so good. There is a problem waiting for me.B: What is the matter?A: Our company is considering choosing a venue for product presentation. I’ve been asked to make recommendations about what basic requirements the venue has to meet.B: That is really a problem. You must consider lots of factors to ensure that the product presentation can make a difference.A: You are right.B: But you don’t have much time to prepare for it.A: So I am very nervous now.B: Just take it easy, let me help you.A: It is very kind of you to do so. Do you have any good ideas?B: In my experience, there are several factors you have to consider seriously.A: Would you like to tell me in details?B: Of course. The first is the popularity of the venue. As we all know, when performing a product presentation, the more people know the venue, the more successful the presentation will be. Isn’t it?A: Yes. I do agree with you.B: Second, the transportation should be convenient so that the presentation can make more people be willing to come.A: Yes. If the transportation is always crowded, people won’t come because they don’t want to waste their time on the traffic jam. According to what you say, the venue had better be located in the downtown.B: Certainly. Third, what facilities the venue should provide, you must make it clear. A: We need a large stage and 200 seats.B: It will be better if there is a big screen, we can display our product on it.A: Great, I should note them down and then contact with the venue now.B: As soon as possible.A: I appreciate of your help very much.B: It is my pleasure.A: I have to go now. See you tomorrow.B:See you.2.A: Good morning, B.B: Good morning. How is everything?A: Not so good. There is a problem waiting for me.B: What is the matter?A: Our company has launched a new medicine into market and now decides to increase sales. I have been asked for my views about how to promote the product. B: That is really a problem.A: Do you have any good ideas?B: In my experience, people always only buy famous medicine because of the quality. So the first thing we have to do is advertisement.A: Yes, we can advertise the new medicine by TV program, newspaper or radio.B: Second, we should tell people every detail about the new medicine, such as what is it made of, how does it make, which disease it can cure of and so on. In this way, we can set people’s heart at rest with reliable quality.A: It is a great idea. In my opinion, we can also sell the medicine at a lower price at the beginning of the launch.B: If so, our company will not benefit as we expect.A: Maybe you are right in a short period. But it is very useful to attract people by means of lowering the price. When most people know the medicine and are willing to buy it, we can raise the price reasonably.B: You are so smart. However, I want to add another good way. We can give the costumers some promotional gifts when they buy the new product the first time.A: what promotional gifts can be offered and what are the cost and quality of promotional gifts?B: We can offer some little things such as towels, cups and so on. By the way, we can contact some factories to produce in a big scale, so the gift will be good-quality and cost less.A: It is great, I will tell my boss all of these.B: He must be very surprised.A: Thanks for your help!B: You are welcome.。

Never for one minute did he look at the world or at people, except in relation to himself. A Clear Conscience
The whole village soon learnt that a large sum of money had been lost. Sam Benton, the local butcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savings to the post office. Sam was sure that the wallet must have been found by one of the villagers, but it was not returned to him. Three months passed, and then one morning, Sam found his wallet outside his front door. It had been wrapped up in newspaper and it contained half the money he had lost, together with a note which said: “A thief, yes, but only 50 per cent a thief!”Two months later, some more money was sent to Sam with another note: “Only 25 per cent a thief now!” In time, all Sam’s money was paid back in this way. The last note said: “I am 100 per cent honest now!”

英语专业专八口语考试2008年真题2008年12月考题Task One: Interpreting from English into ChineseDirections: Please do not do interpreting when you listen to the speech this time.A Toast by an American Professor at a Farewell Banquet for Foreign TeachersGood evening, ladies and gentlemen:I know that it will be hard to keep everyone’s attention while such a fine buffet awaits us, so I’ll attempt to be very brief. On behalf of the foreign teachers at Nanping University, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff of Nanping University, especially the Foreign Affairs Office staff and our colleagues in our various departments, for all the ways you’ve assisted us during the 2007-2008 academic year and made us feel at home.I know that it’s not always easy to host foreign teachers. Because we’re strangers in China, we inevitably wind up creating a lot of extra work for all of you. Unlike Chinese teachers, we require a lot of orientation and assistance when we first arrive, and you’re called on to do everything from guiding us to the local department store to helping us get our computers set up. Then, as the semester starts, you have to answer endless questions about our courses and how we fit into the educational program here—questions that Chinese teachers wouldn’t need to ask. Of course, on top of all this are all the extra things you do to host us while we’re in China—celebrating Chinese holidays with us, taking us to visit interesting scenic sites, and introducing us to China’s find food tradition. Then at the end of theacademic year, many of us leave, and you have to get through the whole process again with the next new group of foreign teachers. Yet, year after year, you do all of this with diligence and grace. So tonight we wish to thank you for all the wonderful ways you host us—such as providing this fine banquet tonight. We also want to express our gratitude for the 100,000 yuan upgrade of our internet services that you paid for this year. However, we especially want to thank you for the many little things—and not so little things—that you do every day to help us in our lives here.May I propose a toast to Nanping University and to all of the people who make this a great place to live and work. When you listen this time, begin interpreting when you heara beep.1.On behalf of the foreign teachers at Nanping University, I want to take this opportunity to thankall of the staff of Nanping University, especially the Foreign Affairs Office staff and our colleagues in our various departments, for all the ways you’ve assisted us during the 2007-2008 academic year and made us feel at home.2.Unlike Chinese teachers, we require a lot of orientation and assistance when we first arrive, andyou’re call ed on to do everything from guiding us to the local department store to helping us get our computers set up.3.Of course, on top of all this are all the extra things you do to host us while we’re inChina—celebrating Chinese holidays with us, taking us to visit interesting scenic sites, and introducing us to China’s find food tradition.4.Then at the end of the academic year, many of us leave, andyou have to get through the wholeprocess again with the next new group of foreign teachers. And first among themselves, Mr Blind-man the Foreman, said, I see clearly that this man is an Heretick. Then said Mr Nogood, Away with such a fellow from the earth. Ay, said Mr Malice, for I hate the very looks of him. Then said Mr Love-lust, I could never endure him. Nor I, said Mr Live-loose, for he would always be condemning my way. Hang him, hang him, said Mr Heady. A sorry Scrub, said Mr High-mind. My heart riseth against him, said Mr Enmity. He is a Rogue, said Mr Lyar. Hanging is too good for him, said Mr Cruelty. Let us dispatch him out of the way, said Mr Hate-light. Then said Mr Implacable, Might I have all the world given me, I could not be reconciled to him; therefore let us forthwith bring him in guilty of death. And so they did; therefore he was presently condemned to be had from the place where he was, to the place from whence he came, and there to be put to the most cruel death that could be invented. They therefore brought him out, to do with him according to their Law; and first they Scourged him, then they Buffeted him, then they Lanced his flesh with Knives; after that they Stoned him with stones, then pricked him with their Swords; and last of all they burned him to ashes at the Stake. Thus came Faithful to his end.Now I saw that there stood behind the multitude a Chariot and a couple of Horses, waiting for Faithful, who (so soon as his adversaries had dispatched him) was taken up into it, and straitway was carried up through the Clouds, with sound of Trumpet, the nearest way to the Coelestial Gate.Brave Faithful, bravely done in word and deed; Judge, Witnesses, and Jury have, instead Of overcoming thee, but shewn their rage: When they are Dead, thou'lt Live from age to age.But as for Christian, he had some respite, and was remanded back to prison; so he there remained for a space: But he that over-rules all things, having the power of their rage in his own hand, so wrought it about, that Christian for that time escaped them, and went his way. And as he went he sang, saying,Well Faithful, thou hast faithfully profestUnto thy Lord; with whom thou shalt be blest,When faithless ones, with all their vain delights,Are crying out under their hellish plights:Sing, Faithful, sing, and let thy name survive; For though they kill'd thee, thou art yet alive. Now I saw in my Dream, that Christian went not forth alone, for there was one whose name was Hopeful, (being made so by the beholding of Christian and Faithful in their words and behaviour, in their sufferings at the Fair) who joined himself unto him, and entering into a brotherly covenant, told him that he would be his Companion. Thus one died to make Testimony to the Truth, and another rises out of his ashes to be a Companion with Christian in his pilgrimage. This Hopeful also told Christian, that there were many more of the men in the Fair that would take their time and follow after.专Questions: Fill in the blanks with one word for each. To die—to sleep—No more; and by a sleep to say we endThe heartache, and the thousand natural shocksThat flesh is heir to. ’Tis a consummationDevoutly to be wish’d. To die—to sleep. To sleep—Perchance to dream: ay, there ’s the rub! For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,Must give us pause. Who would fardels bear,To grunt and sweat under a weary life,But that the dread of something after death—The undiscover’d country, from whose bournNo traveller returns—puzzles the will,And makes us rather bear those ills we haveThan fly to others that we know not of?Thus conscience does make cowards of us all, 课And thus the native hue of resolutionIs sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,And enterprises of great pitch and momentWith this regard their currents turn awryAnd lose the name of action.Questions: Answer the following questions briefly. Thou know'st that this cannot be saidkaA sin, nor shame, or loss of maidenhead ;Yet this enjoys before it woo,And pampered swells with one blood made of two, And this, alas ! is more than we would do.Oh stay, three lives in one flea spare,Where we almost, nay more than married are. This flea is you and I, and thisOur marriage bed, and marriage temple is; Though parents grudge, and you, we are met, And cloistered in these living walls of jet. Though use make you apt to kill me,Let not to that self-murder added be,And sacrilege, three sins in killing three. Cruel and sudden, hast thou sincePurpled thy nail in blood of innocence? Wherein could this flea guilty be,Except in that drop which it sucked from thee? Yet thou triumph'st, and say'st that thouFind'st not thyself nor me the weaker now ;'Tis true ; then learn how false fears be :Just so much honour, when thou yield'st to me,Will waste, as this flea's death took life from thee.Questions:Fill in the blanks with one word for each. ( 8%, two scores for each blank)John Donne was the founder of the _______ school of poetry. The poem was written by him, entitled ______ _____.In the poem, the poet uses a strange image “_____ ______”.“_____ _____” is compared to “Our marriage bed”.Passage 5Of StudiesStudies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment, and disposition of business. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience; for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need proyning by study; and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments and the meaner sort of books; else distilled books are like common distilled waters, flashy things. Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not. Histories make men wise; poets, witty; the mathematics, subtile; natural philosophy, deep; moral, grave; logic and rhetoric, able to contend. Abeunt studia in mores. Nay, there is no stond or impediment in the wit but may be wrought out by fit studies; like as diseases of the body may have appropriate exercises. Bowling is good for the stone and reins; shooting for the lungs and breast; gentle walking for the stomach; riding for the head; and the like. So if a man's wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics; for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again. If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the schoolmen, for they are Cymini sectors. If he be not apt to beat over matters and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another, let him study the lawyers' cases. So every defect of the mind may have a special receipt.Questions: Fill in the blanks with only one word. ( 8%, two scores for each blank)“ in discourse” means in ________.“able to contend” means able to ______.“ simple men” means _______men.“ in the wit” means in the _______.五、综合论述:从5个问题中任选3个论述(3题,每题15分,共45分)1. Reading and Comprehension (40%)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A) ,B) ,C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:America is the land of the automobile. This country has only 6 percent of the world's population but 46 percent of the world's cars. Right now, there are 97 million privately owned cars consuming 75 billion gallons of gasoline and traveling an estimated 1,000 billion miles a year. The figures also affirm something we know every time we refill our gasoline tank. The automobile is a very thirsty piece of technology. Of the total petroleum supply in the UnitedStates, 30 percent goes to satisfy that thirst. Every year for each passenger car, about 800 gallons of gasoline are consumed.Other aspects of the automobile are worth reminding of here. It takes a great deal of energy to manufacture one automobile. We also expend energy in the process of shipping cars from factories to showrooms, displaying them for sale and making replacement parts for repairs. About two gallons of gasoline are consumed in the process of making every ten gallons that are pumped into an automobile's gas tank.Building highways and parking lots has used up much of our land. It has been estimated that we have paved over 21,000 square miles of this country's surface, most of it to accommodate the automobile. The automobile is also the largest contributor to our nation's air pollution problem.Apart from the great impact that would occur if everyone seriously practised conservation, one should stop and think about his own casual use of the automobile. There are numerous situations where better planning and awareness could really make a difference in energy savings and dollars. Because the automobile uses the largest percentage of energy in an average American family's energy budget and almost half of the dollars, the impetus for saving is tremendous.1. According to the author, most people realize that ____.A) other sources of energy must be foundB) great efforts have been made to solve the energy problemC) the automobile uses large amounts of gasolineD) it is the automobile that causes the energy problem2. Most people do not realize that ____.A) the manufacture of the automobile requires much energyB) gasoline is more expensive than home-heating oilC) oil resources could some day run outD) the automobile is a thirsty machine3. According to the passage, the automobile uses much of our energy and____.A) gasoline B) petroleumC) highways D) land4. The author implies that____.A) small cars use energy efficientlyB) anti-pollution devices on cars are not effectiveC) Americans have to import a great quantity of gasoline each yearD) Americans waste energy5. The best title for the passage should be _____.A) Automobile—America’s Thirsty MachineB) Energy ProblemC) Importance of Energy ConservationD) Automobile and Energy ProblemQuestions 6 to10 are based on the following passage:Over 60 million persons in the United States own a credit card, which has had the effect of increasing consumption possibilities for households by allowing them to make heavy purchases without giving up a single dollar and coin for them. In fact, thousands of dollars of merchandise, ranging from autos, clothing, to electrical appliances are purchased by buyers through the credit card. Credit cards have also been of significant importance to the national economy. Businessmen have been encouraged to expand plant and equipment and hire additional personnel to meet theheavy demand for their products. The tendency of employment and income would be to rise significantly.Unfortunately, the ease with which buyers can increase their purchase with credit cards have caused them to overlook the additional costs. Purchases on credit cards are postponed payments. Buy-now-and-pay-later encourages buyers to use credit cards extensively. Since the buyer is in effect borrowing money for a specific purpose, he must expect to pay an interest charge. Interest is the price of using money over a long period of time. A close analysis of the use of credit cards for heavy purchases will show that the buyer has added to the cost of making these purchases. It must also be kept in mind that unpaid monthly balances means added interest charges. Furthermore, the use of credit cards will add to the cost of the product since the shopkeeper does not receive the money at the time of purchase. Shopkeeper might add on the cost of handling credit cards to the bill.6. This passage is mainly concerned with____.A) the cashless economyB) the cost of making payments by credit cardsC) the advantages of credit cardsD) the necessity of using credit cards7. According to the passage ,which of the following is NOT true about the use of credit cards?A) It affects the level of employment and income.B) It is significant to the national economy.C) It stimulates people to buy more.D) It makes purchasing more complicated.8. When a buyer makes a purchase by credit cards, the problem encountered by him is______.A) the changing tendency of interest ratesB) the rise of the price of productsC) the rise in insurance rates when credit cards are lostD) the added cost of a product9. Interest charges for the use of credit cards reflect____.A) the cost of owning a credit cardB) the unpaid balance of a monthly billC) the shopkeeper's cost of handling credit cardsD) the price of using money for a long period of time10. The author of the passage implies that____.A) credit cards tend to raise interest chargesB) buyers should not use credit cards at allC) buyers should make purchases with credit cards cautiouslyD) the use of credit cards reduces the consumption possibilitiesQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights radio televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for millions of years. Scientists are discovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity. All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses, which can be recorded in an electrocardiogram, and a doctor can study it to determine how well the heart is working. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small--often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have becomeso specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, the effects can be astonishing. The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it lives (An electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.). As many as fourfifths of all the cells in the electric eel's body are specialized for generating electricity ,and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to the length of its body.11. What is the main idea of the passage?A) Electric eels are dangerous.B) Biology and electricity appear to be closely related.C) People would be at a loss without electricity.D) Scientists still have much to discover about electricity.12. The author mentions all of the following as a result of a power failure except that ____.A) refrigerated food items may go badB) traffic lights do not workC) cars run slowly in the streetsD) People must rely on candlelight13. Why does the author mention electric eels?A) To warn the reader to keep away from them.B) To compare their voltage to that used in houses.C) To give an example of a living electrical generator.D) To describe a new source of electrical power.14. How many volts of electricity can an electric eel emit?A) 1,000. B) 800.C) 200. D) 120.15. It can be inferred that the longer an eel is, the_____.A) more beneficial it will be to scienceB) more powerful its electrical charge will beC) easier it will be to findD) tougher it will be to eatQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:If it were only necessary to decide whether to teach elementary science to everyone on a mass basis or to find the gifted few and take them as far as they can go, our task would be fairly simple. The public school system, however, has no such choice, for the jobs must be carried on at the same time. Because we depend so heavily upon science and technology for our progress, we must produce specialists in many fields. Because we live in a democratic nation, whose citizens make the policies for the nation, large numbers of us must be educated to understand, to support ,and when necessary ,to judge the work of experts. The public school must educate both producers and users of scientific services. In education, there should be a good balance among the branches of knowledge that contribute to effective thinking and wise judgement. Such balance is defeated by too much emphasis on any one field. This question of balance involves not only the relation of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the arts but also relative emphases among the natural sciences themselves.Similarly, we must have a balance between current and classical knowledge. The attention of the public is continually drawn to the discovery of new knowledge; these should not be allowed to turn our attention away from the sound ,established materials that form the basis of courses for beginners.16. According to the first paragraph, the task of education is fairly complicated because_____.A) the current public school system is too complex to be understoodB) the public school has no choice of what to teachC) it is difficult to choose what to teach in public schoolsD) the educators have to take care of both ordinary and gifted students17. The word "defeated" in paragraph 2 most probably means_____.A) broken B) destroyedC) beaten D) damaged18. Which of the following is NOT included in the passage?A) We depend much on science and technology for our progress.B) The educators are required to lay emphasis on some particular field.C) A democratic nation needs a lot of well-educated citizens.D) Elementary science should be taught on a mass basis in public schools.19. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A) Most people take great interest in classical knowledge.B) Classical knowledge is more popular than current knowledge.C) Sufficient attention should be given to basic knowledge.D) The attention of the public should not be drawn to new knowledge.20. The passage centers on_____.A) the balance in educationB) the importance of educationC)the balance among different branches of knowledgeD) the balance between basic and new knowledge三、英汉互译 (2篇,每篇10分,共20分)A. English-Chinese TranslationDirections: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET.(10 points,10%)The 1960s saw the great civil rights movement whose goals were to end segregation(种族隔离)laws completely and fight for the equal rights for the colored people. Many American blacks began to have a new mood. They declared that "black is beautiful",and the black community showed signs of unprecedentedself confidence.(1)Equally important, many black leaders began to disclaim fullintegrations into the American mainstream as the goal of the black minority. (2)Instead, they argued, blacks ought to coexist with other groups in a plural society containing different and distinctive communities living in mutual respect. The elimination of legal barriers to advancement has been a major gain for the blacks, but institutionalized discrimination is still rife. Housing, in particular, remains highly segregated: the great majority of blacks continue to live in neighborhoods that are overwhelmingly black, and most whites live in neighborhoods that are overwhelmingly white.(3)Busing and other programs aimed at integrating the schools have had some impact in inner city areas but have made virtually no difference to the segregation that exists between the predominantly black urban centers and the predominantly white suburbs and small towns that surround them. Median family income of blacks rose from 230 in 1960to 142 in 1977,but the median income of white families rose at least as fast, and the income gap between the two groups has widened in recent years.(4)A major source of this differential is the fact that blacks tend to be barred from positions of authority over other workers, and are restricted instead to lower paying jobs further down the work place hierarchy. This factor aloneaccounts for about a third of the total black white income gap.(5)Race relations between black and white still leave much to be desired, although there is unmistakable evidence of some improvements in attitudes. However, there is a sharp divergence between the races on the question of how much progress has been made in ending discrimination. The majority of whites believe that there has been a lot of progress in getting rid of discrimination, but more than half of the blacks felt that there has not been much real change. Only less than 20%of the whites believe that many blacks miss out on jobs and promotion in their city becauseof discrimination. Many blacks are still pessimistic about progress in race relations.B. He said, “Daughter, I’m going down to the train to meet the Reverend, and I’ve roasted two ducks and left them there for him in the other room. Don’t you touch them!” The daughter said, “No, I won’t touch them.” So her papa went to the train to meet the Reverend, and the girl began to taste the ducks. The ducks tasted so good that she kept on tasting them until she had eaten them all up, every bit of them. After the old man came back, he didn’t even look in the place where he had left the ducks. He went directly into the other room to sharpen his knife on the oilstone so he could carve the ducks. The preacher was sitting in the room with the girl. She knew that her papa was going to punish her, and she started crying and shedding tears. The preacher asked, “What is the matter with you, girl?”She said, “Papa has this one bad fault: He invites preachers to his house and goes to sharpen his knife to cut off both their ears.”And the Reverend asked, “What is that you say, daugher?”The girl said, “Yes, Papa invites preachers here all the time and cuts off both their ears.” The preacher said, “Daughter, hand me my hat. Quick!” The girl gave him his hat and he ran out of the door quickly.
