Title: A Comparative Analysis of Chinese and Indian Wedding CustomsWeddings are a universal celebration of love and union, yet each culture brings its unique flavors and traditions to this momentous occasion. The weddings in China and India, two ancient and vibrant civilizations, are particularly rich in symbolism and ceremony. This essay delves into the fascinating contrasts between Chinese and Indian wedding customs, highlighting their similarities and differences.Let's begin with the preliminaries. In both cultures, weddings are preceded by a period of intense preparation, involving the selection of a auspicious date, the invitation of guests, and the decoration of the venue. However, the specific rituals and beliefs surrounding these preparations vary. In China, for instance, the date is often chosen based on the zodiac compatibility of the bride and groom, while in India, astrological charts are consulted to ensure a harmonious union.Moving on to the attire, both cultures have their own distinctive styles. Chinese weddings often feature the bride in a traditional red qipao or cheongsam, symbolizing luck and prosperity. The groom, on the other hand, wears a suit or traditional Mao suit, reflecting a blend of modernity andtradition. In contrast, Indian weddings are renowned for their vibrant colors and intricate details. The bride typically wears a lehenga choli, a vibrant ensemble consisting of a skirt, blouse, and matching veil, often adorned with intricate embroidery and jewelry. The groom wears a sherwani, a long, tailored coat, often in a matching color to the bride's attire. The ceremony itself offers a fascinating contrast. Chinese weddings typically follow a set order of events, including the giving of gifts, the exchange of vows, and the toasting of the newlyweds. There is often a strong emphasis on family and community, with extended families playing pivotal roles in the ceremony. In India, weddings are often grander affairs, with elaborate rituals and traditions that can span several days. The ceremony itself is often divided into several parts, including the baraat (the groom's procession to the wedding venue), the pheras (the circling of the sacred fire), and the saptapadi (the seven steps representing the seven vows).Food also plays a significant role in both weddings. Chinese weddings feature a banquet of delicious dishes, often reflecting the regional cuisine of the bride and groom. The menu is carefully chosen to symbolize prosperity, fertility, and union. Indian weddings, on the other hand, are renowned for theirfeasts, often featuring a variety of curries, rice dishes, and sweetmeats. The preparation of these dishes is often a community effort, with relatives and friends pitching in to create a celebration that is both delicious and heartwarming.Another notable difference lies in the role of music and dance. Chinese weddings often have live bands or DJs playing traditional and modern music, creating a festive atmosphere. Dance performances, while not as common, can be a highlight of the reception. In India, music and dance are integral to the wedding celebrations. From the vibrant drum beats of the baraat to the graceful dances of the bride and groom, music and dance are used to express joy and celebrate the union of two families.Lastly, we come to the post-wedding traditions. In China, the newlyweds often visit relatives and friends after the wedding, receiving their blessings and gifts. There may also be a series of smaller gatherings and celebrations in the following days and weeks. In India, the post-wedding period is marked by a honeymoon and the gradual settlement into married life. There are also various rites and rituals that the couple may undertake to ensure a prosperous and harmonious married life.In conclusion, Chinese and Indian weddings, while sharingthe universal theme of love and union, are distinctly shaped by their respective cultures and traditions. From the attire and ceremony to the food and music, each culture brings its own unique flavors and symbols to this momentous occasion. As globalization continues to blur cultural boundaries, it is perhaps more important than ever to cherish and celebrate these differences, allowing each culture to shine in its own unique way.。

中外婚姻差异英语作文Title: Cultural Differences in Marriage Between Chinese and Western Cultures。

Marriage is a sacred institution that varies significantly across different cultures. When comparing Chinese and Western marriages, one can observe distinctive customs, traditions, and societal norms that shape the dynamics of relationships. This essay explores the disparities between Chinese and Western marriages, focusing on aspects such as family involvement, gender roles, and wedding ceremonies.Family Involvement:In Chinese culture, family plays a central role in the process of marriage. Parents often take an active role in arranging marriages or exerting influence on theirchildren's choice of partners. Filial piety, a fundamental Confucian value, emphasizes respect and obedience toparents' wishes. As a result, Chinese couples may face pressure to marry someone approved by their families, and the decision-making process often involves considering familial expectations and preferences. On the contrary, Western marriages typically prioritize individual autonomy and personal choice. While familial support and approval are valued, the ultimate decision to marry rests with the individuals involved. Western couples have more freedom to choose their partners based on compatibility, love, and shared values, rather than solely on familial considerations. This independence in decision-making can lead to greater personal fulfillment but may also result in strained family relationships if parents disapprove of the chosen partner.Gender Roles:Another significant difference between Chinese and Western marriages lies in gender roles and expectations within the relationship. Traditional Chinese gender roles are often more rigid, with distinct expectations for menand women. Historically, men have been viewed as the primary breadwinners and decision-makers, while women are expected to prioritize family duties and domestic responsibilities. In Western societies, there has been a gradual shift towards more egalitarian gender roles within marriages. Women have gained greater independence and opportunitiesfor education and employment, leading to a more balanced division of household labor and decision-making responsibilities. Modern Western marriages often prioritize equality and mutual respect between partners, with both individuals contributing to financial support and decision-making processes.Wedding Ceremonies:Wedding ceremonies in Chinese and Western cultures also differ in their customs and traditions. Chinese weddings are often steeped in centuries-old rituals and symbolism, reflecting cultural beliefs and values. Traditional Chinese weddings may include customs such as the exchange ofbetrothal gifts, the tea ceremony, and the use of auspicious colors like red and gold. These ceremonies serve to honor ancestors, bring blessings upon the couple, and symbolize the union of two families.Western wedding ceremonies vary widely depending on cultural and religious backgrounds, but they often emphasize personalization and individual expression. Couples have the freedom to tailor their weddings toreflect their unique personalities and preferences. Western weddings may include customs such as exchanging vows, exchanging rings, and hosting receptions with music, dancing, and elaborate decorations. The emphasis is often on celebrating love and commitment in the presence of family and friends. In conclusion, the institution of marriage manifests differently in Chinese and Western cultures due to variations in familial involvement, gender roles, and wedding traditions. While Chinese marriages tend to be influenced by familial expectations and adhere totraditional gender norms, Western marriages prioritizeindividual choice, equality, and personal expression. Understanding these cultural differences is crucial for fostering cross-cultural awareness and respecting diverse perspectives on love and marriage.。

On Differences of the Marriage Concept betweenChinese and AmericanIntroductionTraced back to primitive society, there is the so-called marriage. It is the law of nature that opposites attract makes the mammals live and multiply. Therefore, marriage is a normal and necessary social phenomenon. Because of the different social environment, the human concept of marriage and the mode of combination are also different. The culture of China and America is different, especially the concept of marriage. The United States is a cross-cultural social group and it is composed of many cultural groups of society. The Americans’ mentality are characterized by freedom love, independent and the fondness of exploring, adventuring and enterprising; While we Chinese mentality mainly is a kind of care and the consciousness of compassion. It is based on the two different points of view that people's understanding of marriage is different. About the marriage, someone vividly metaphor: "for the Chinese, marriage is more like a commercial activity, so called management marriage; for Americans, marriage is more like playing house, full of freedom. So there are much differences of marriage concept between China and America.Chapter One the Differences Reflected in the Marriage Concept Between Chinese and American Ancient and modern, the human natures are the same; they all have desires, joys, sorrows and the psychology of love and hate. But due to the differences of geographical environment, historical background, development process and other aspects, each nation and has its features. The differences may reflect in many aspects, such as the ways of choosing mates, wedding ceremony and so on.1.1 the Ways of Choosing Mates1.1.1 the Chinese Way of Choosing MatesSince ancient times, “be matched for marriage” is the ways of choosing mates in China, which means both sides are well-matched in social and economic status. The idea is so ingrained in China. Although, since the reform and opening, with the development of economy and the deepening of the communication between Chinese and western culture, the younger generation is no longer subject to the constraints of China's traditional thought and they are freedom to choose their mates, most of people can not get rid of the constraint of society and family. If free love to choose the mates, first of all, they must be approved by their parents. If there is big disparity between two family conditions, parents will not agree. If the man’s family condition is poor, her parents will never agree too. As a popular saying “The economic base determines the superstructure”. Only well material base can provide a stable life. No matter in rural or city, getting married is a large expense. As we all know, nowadays people are getting more and more reality. House is the precondition. If one man has house and car, he must be admired by many people. Before long, there is a hot debate inmicro blog, which talks about how much it spends when a man gets married. The result shows it is very common that men married a daughter-in-law can spend hundreds of thousands. In a famous dating show, "if you are the one”, one female guest said, "she would rather cry in a BMW, than smile on the bicycle”. According to the internet, it reflects the current state of mind of many women. The TV plays series “The naked marriage age" reflects the reality of modern marriage: firstly, to get parents recognition; secondly, arrangement of pregnant plan; thirdly, solving financial difficulties. Besides, refusing the lure of the outside city and achieving the unity on the concept of life. This is all sorts of problems after 80s.1.1.2 the American Way of Choosing MatesThe freedom to choose mates is the dominant concept in America. Because Americans have the characteristic of personalities. For love and mating, young Americans are completely based on their fondness. In America, men and women who in love care more about whether they are suitable, namely whether are fit in characters. They do not care about each other's family background, education level, and even religion. Parents will not interfere with their children but give their blessing. Marriage-seeking ad often can be seen in newspapers and magazines that, Chinese men list their accomplishments: degree, occupation, economic status, and so on. While American men list is their hobbies and characteristics. Because the American is looking for a partner, one that has similar tastes and interests, one that have mutual affinity. Americans do not care much about other's appearance, stature and age. A beautiful Chinese woman was marry to an American, she jokingly asked her husband if he felt a little proud when took her out to meet his friends, he asks why, when he was told the reason, he became more puzzled. He said that I marry you not because what you are so call "good condition", but feel that we share common interest and pursue a similar life. He also said certainly that you are beautiful, but why others envyme? This reflects the American way of choosing mates according to ones disposition and hobby, without caring too much about each other's family background, appearance and economic conditions.1.2 the Attitude Toward Marriage1.2.1 the Chinese Attitude Toward MarriageOne of the main reasons resulted in different way of choosing mates between Chinese and American is that they have significant difference on their attitude toward marriage. Chinese people pay attention to interpersonal relation of interdependence, marriage is absolutely not the simple combination of two individuals. Parents help their sons to marry daughter-in-law, which superficially hope that his son can soon organize his own family, but actually it is for the whole family. In the ancient times, marriage is an important event among families. Even the relatives of many generations would be involved in. Undoubtedly , the newly married couple would worship the ancestors as soon as they enter in the family. Recently, a popular topic "the feeling of happiness”, although most people living standards have improved, the feeling of happiness fell instead. Marriage directly affect the feeling of happiness. Chinese people treat marriage like a Chinese man for a woman; they have no equal point of view. According to a sample survey of the Tianjin women's federation, 81.7% of people treat the children as an important factor to maintain marriage. From that, we can definitely say that the marriage of Chinese people is for others, as the marriage is mainly for carrying on ancestral line, serving for the old, which is seen as the obligation and responsibility of the family. Besides, Chinese women are the most patience women in the world. The thinking of “Marriage woman likes the water which is puling out.” They think after marriage they already an individual; and need to solve her problem by her self. Chinese people have better tolerance is also because they love to pin their desire toachieve in the next generation. Having this hope, to bear an unhappy relationship in a marriage, is not a big deal any more.Of course, with the development of the society, more and more people, especially young people gradually get rid of the bondage of some traditional concepts. They no longer simply think that marriage is just for carrying on ancestral line. For them, marriage is not only a kind of family obl igation but the personal right. What’s more, as a member of society, they have the inexorable right to be responsible for their own life and future.1.2.2 the Americans Attitude Towards MarriageAmerica is a young country, which consists of many parts of the world and many immigrants. Until now there is still a large number of immigrants enter the country every year. They have a strong personal struggle and competitive consciousness. The diversity of American culture and social environment make many people to accept such life creed: Every man for himself and God for us all; every man is the architect of his own fortune. They think marriage is a combination of two individuals, as long as both sides reach the legal age to married, the third party has no rights to intervene. Americans are independent and reality, very few people marry for forming a family. In American’s character, equality plays a significant role. The realization of being equality is deep in every American’s heart. Compared with Chinese people, they have less ability to tolerate the partner. They never oppress their affection. They know it very clear that as an individual, they have rights to gain equality, even in spiritual or marital. They think more highly of the romance in marriage, they have higher expectation of the quality of their life. They would not to bear in marriage. The main purpose is to find a lasting heterosexual life partner, so that they can satisfy themselves in physical, psychological and social communication. So they must choose a congenial people. They consider that marriage is one of their individual rights but not the obligation; it is a kind of form rather than a responsibility. When asked what is thepurpose of marriage, three-quarters of Americans said that it is the "mutual happiness and fulfillment" of adults rather than "birth and raising children”. They think that love is the guarantee to maintain a lasting marriage.1.3 the Wedding Ceremony1.3.1 Jollification - Chinese WeddingTraditional Chinese weddings are always filled with red things to bring auspicious blessings and respects. And even wedding customs reflect traditions from Chinese philosophy. The Chinese regard the color red as the symbol of happiness, success, luck, faith and growth. They like red very much, which comes from worship of the Sun. In traditional Chinese weddings, there are double Xi characters in red, red scarves, red flowers and the bride wears a red coat. The wedding ceremony shows harmony between nature and people. A marriage is not only a merger of the couple; traditionally, it symbolizes the merger of two families. So the wedding ceremony should reflect the holiness of marriage, drawing the attention of relatives and friends. There is harmony between nature and the people inside. Inviting relatives and friends to the wedding symbolizes the formality and the relationships between people. During a marriage, two families become in-laws. The ceremony reflects the importance and family status of the parents. After the ceremony, the bride and the groom usually burn money and food as offerings to the gods. As the fire consumes the offerings accompanied by the sound of firecrackers, god accepts the gift, indicating that there is harmony between nature and people. The sound of musical instruments in the wedding is usually loud to express the voice of the people. The sound should be loud enough to let nature know, and it also demonstrates the importance of the marriage. The food the bride eats has cultural significance in traditional weddings; the bride usually has red dates, peanuts, longans and melon seeds. The meaning is evident in theChinese pronunciation of these four foods. When they are said together, it sounds like "Have a baby soon."1.3.2 Solemn – American Wedding CeremonyIt all begins with engagement. Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her. Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there's still room for American individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors in a scenic spot. A few even have the ceremony while skydiving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue." The groom wears a formal suit or tuxedo. Several close friends participate in the ceremony as attendants, including the best man and the maid of honor. As the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health." Finally the minister announces the big moment: "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"At the wedding reception, the bride and groom greet their guests. Then they cut the wedding cake and feed each other a bite. Guests mingle while enjoying cake, punch and other treats. Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Tradition says that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry.1.4 the Attitude Toward Divorce1.4.1 Chinese Attitude Toward DivorceWith the development of economy, more and more people have found their position in society and they have their own career. As a result of the social competition pressure, the time of communication between the couples seem to be less and less. Day after day they are alienated. Besides, under the influence of western culture, ultimately, they go their separate ways unavoidably. Thus the divorce rate is on the rise. But for Chinese people, once they are married, they will go through the hard time together and their love will be everlasting. China is a humane society, and where humanness there is warmth. Apart from working, people can make an appointment with two or three of their friends to the teahouse or cafe, chatting and drinking, how happy and emotional appeal they are. When having happy things, they happy together. Instead, when having unhappy things they concern and care for each other. This relationship, even if not together is mutual induction. In Chinese society, the interpersonal communication is unobstructed, thus couple quarreled caused by emotional stress can easily relax from other interpersonal communication. Such as when couples quarrelling, the wife can go back her parent’s home, resting for a day or two, or to find a good friend pouring out their feelings. The husband can chat with friends in the tea house. Over a period of time, they go back to home. The couples are easy to reconciliation. Even though they do not restore to the previous state, under the pressure of the society, they are ashamed to divorce.1.4.2 American Attitude Toward DivorceAs is known to all, the United States is a country of high divorce rate. We can often hear the reports about some public figures for the second time, even for the third time dressed in a wedding dress going into the church. Why Americans are so casual toward divorce? Why appear this kind of social phenomenon? From the analysis, we know that the American mentality belongs to a “wonder” type: inquiry, creative, and progress. Amer ica isa multicultural country, Americans advocate personal freedom and self-reliance. Personal major problem do not rely on the help of relatives and friends, but directly depend on the government. As a result of the American social system, the interpersonal do not depend on each other so much, so, the emotional communication between people is reduced to a minimum. But marriage is a kind of emotional life, which, quarrels or arguments are inevitable. In the United States, the emotional communication between people is more limited, marital conflict is not easy to get guidance. When accumulating over a long period, it easily causes a rift and emotional trauma. According to the latest statistics show that about 60% of all marriages end in divorce in the United States. Only 20% of the second or third married couples will be happy. 80% married again and again, which ends in divorce. More than one million children saw their parents' divorce every year. Among babies that born this year, half of the parents will divorce before their children 18 years old. Although divorce is very necessary, but the high divorce rate reflects the certain social issues.Chapter Two the Origin of the Difference The social system of China and America is different, thus it is inevitable that there are different concept of marriage. However everything has its origins. There are many causes of the different marriage concept between China and America. Such as historical background, economic development, religious beliefs, social values and so on.2.1 the Comparison of Historical OriginChina is a nation with 5000 years history, the feudal society last for twenty-three thousand years. The traditional Confucian culture has deep influence on ancient marriage and family. Under the influe nce of Confucian culture’s thought of "grand unification", the fusion of two families is not simply a couple combination, but the process of the whole family participate in. In ancient times, men do farm work while women engage in weaving. These ethical ideas have been influencing until today. "The parents arranged for their children’s marriage" is the way of choosing mates that lasts for thousands of years.America is a young county consists of many different immigrants coming from all over the world; it is a newly developed federal republic country only with two hundred years of history. It’s characterized by multi-ethnic, multi-culture, relative open economic and cultural degree, democracy and freedom. Since the establishments of American, this kind of concept have been penetrated into the minds of Americans, such as, dependence, equality, fraternity, the personal achievement and material wealth, accordingly their marriage concept seems to be more free, open and equal.2.2 the Comparison of Religious BeliefBuddhism has introduced into China for one thousand years, people believe that theremust be "Buddha” control their destines. Buddhism is contrary to the laws that “a man should get married on coming age, and so should a girl”. It does not advocate marri age, but typical “throwing up families and being monks”In many western countries, especially in Britain and the United States, people believe in Christianity, most of them are pious Christian. Christians consider that the harmony between men and women is fundamental. Men and women should kind to each other, love each other and promote each other. The marriage of the Christian mode is: God will decide, for personal interest’s combination, loyal and love to each other forever. The different religious ideology, thus be bound to the difference in the marriage.2.3 the Comparison of Economic Development and Social EthosSince the reform and opening, with the development of economy and the deepening of the communication between Chinese culture and western culture, the younger generation is no longer subject to the constraints of China's traditional thought; they have the chance to choose mates. Many young people began to free love, but when thinking of getting married, most would choose “suitable". The economic co ndition is the first condition of women in choosing a mate. China is still a developing country, the central and western regions are still poor areas. So, many people tread marriage as a springboard, if one marry to rich families, it would be like rebirth.America is characterized by the higher economic level, a short history and absence of the influence of the feudal remnants. Therefore, it could early carry into the industrial revolution. Just because of above factors, the economical status seems more equal. When choosing mates, generally, they do not care about family background, education degree, paying more attention to the fact that if they have similar tastes and interests.2.4 Chinese Collectivism and American Individualism MarriageValuesChina is a culture group that treats collectivism as the core values, and personal interests should obey collective interests. It pays attention to cultivate a harmonious, tolerant of interpersonal relations. The behaviors of Chinese families’ ideas often treat the ir own collective interests as the center.China is influenced by Confucianism, family members are not completely equal, and marriage is a significant impact to both husband and wife. In China, marriage is no longer belonging to personal problems; it contains morality, responsibility, sense of honor and so on. Chinese people are proud of modest and oppose to overly expose their selves. Therefore, Chinese culture reflects the characteristics of community which are not allowed to put personal values take precedence over group interests. In China, marry a person is married him all the sum of social relations. The essence of our traditional marriage concept is: family first and personal happiness insignificantly. Under this traditional idea influence, for thousands of years, numerous people give up a lifetime of love and happiness in order to get peace of mind and self comfort. The small family certainly gives way to the collective.Americans advocate independence and freedom, its unique culture origin forms the values of independent thinking, rights and equal idea. The America emphasizes individual equality, independent development and right consciousness, which advocates personal values take precedence over group interests. In American society, the mainstream view is the family is always more important than work.Chapter Three the Influence of the Different MarriageConceptIn recent years, with the rapid development of economy, great changes have taken place in young men and women's concept of marriage; the traditional view of marriage and love have faced unprecedented challenges. Whether the concept of marriage is positive or not, directly related to the people’s mental health, study and work, which affects the overall quality of young people and the overall level of development, affecting the national quality and social development in the future.3.1 the Influence of Marriage Concept in ChinaWith the rapid development of economy and society, people's living standard are improved greatly, Hedonism of western capitalist culture has had a huge impact on our daily life. Meanwhile the idea of money worship, individualism and other decadent ideas also have quickly spread in the society which causes great impacts on traditional concept and marriage concept. Nowadays, people become more and more reality, when choosing mates, they care much about one’s economic condition.Money can't buy you love, but in modern China it can bring you the pick of 50,000 of China's prettiest girls after one of the country's largest online dating agencies held a competition to find the perfect match for 18 of its dollar-millionaire members. Earlier this year one female contestant on a television dating show caused an online outcry when she flippantly remarked that she would "rather be crying in the backseat of BMW than smiling on the back of a bicycle"。

Let's delve into the fascinating differences that define this unique bond.Firstly, the concept of arranged marriages, a staple in many Eastern societies, stands in stark contrast to the Western preference for love matches. In my "chatgpt" world, families often play a significant role in selecting a partner, reflecting the strong family ties and cultural values. In contrast, in the West, individuals often have more say in choosing their own life partner, mirroring the individualistic spirit.Secondly, the cultural expectations surrounding marriage vary greatly. In some Eastern cultures, marriageis often seen as a union for procreation and maintaining family honor, while Western marriages often prioritize personal happiness and compatibility. This difference inperspective can lead to negotiations over roles, expectations, and even the frequency of physical intimacy. Then, the role of premarital education and communication is a different game. In my "chatgpt" world, premarital counseling is a common practice, fostering understanding and conflict resolution. In the West, open communication and emotional maturity are crucial for a successful relationship, fostering a more self-expressive bond.Lastly, the celebration of marriage rituals and traditions also differ. From the elaborate Indian weddings to the simple American ceremonies, these rituals serve as a reflection of cultural heritage and often involve intricate rituals and customs. In my world, these traditions are a blend of both, symbolizing the harmonious blend of East and West.In conclusion, the tapestry of中外婚姻差异 is a rich tapestry, woven from the threads of tradition, culture, and personal choice. However, few studies have been made to compare them from the perspective of love view. This paper intends to make a comprehensive comparison between Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Shaoxing opera Butterfly Lovers to show the major differences between Chinese Love View and Western Love View.Butterfly Lovers and Romeo and Juliet are two well-known literary works in the Chinese and Western literatures. These two works share many similarities, for example, eulogy of love, praise of women and anti-feudalism. So at the very beginning of the paper, I will discuss the similarities between two plays from these aspects. The essence of the thesis discusses their differences from the love view, including the following aspects: their attitudes to love, and different aesthetic attitudes. At last, the conclusion introduces the value of the comparison of the two plays.Key words: love view, cultural background, tragedy, comparisonContent (书名斜体)Ⅰ. However, what is love? Although thousands of years have gone, the meaning still remains purely undefined. “Love is the attraction, desire, or affection felt by a person for a person who arouses delight or admiration or tenderness, sympathetic interest or benevo lence……” published in Webster’s Third New International Dictionary of the English Language (1979:1340). Love is a special feeling that involves a strong desire to be with a specific other person. Love is an everlasting theme in the literary works all over the world. Many works, both ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign have been focused on this theme. However, there are some differences between Chinese love view and Western love view. From the ancient times, there are many differences.1.1Ancient Chinese Concept of Love and the Renaissance Era Concept of Love1.1.1 The Formation and Development of the Ancient Concept of LoveIn feudal society, Chinese people generally adopt a prudent, serious and realistic attitude towards love and marriage. This attitude is closely related to the concerned and mutual-dependent social psychology. This attitude is also related to the typical feature of traditional Chinese culture-collectivism. Under the influence of collective ideology, it is required that individuals must be subordinate to the society and younger generation should be obedient to elder generations. It is thus natural that marriage should be decided by parents with the matchmaker going in between, and marriage should comply with the customs of couples coming from families of equal status. As marriage is based on social status, money and customs, there is inevitably a lack of understanding and true love between the groom and the bribe, which is responsible for many tragic marriages. In traditional Chinese tragedies, most of the protagonists adopt a prudent, serious and realistic attitude towards their love and marriage.1.1.2 Western Renaissance Concept of LoveMany people in Western countries adopt romantic and impetuous attitude towards love and marriage. This attitude is related to the typical theme of Western culture-individualism, which emphasizes the rights of individuals. Individualism pertains to societies in which the ties between individual are loose. Everyone is expected to look after himself or herself. Marriage is looked upon as an affair between two loved persons instead between two families, so parents seldom interfere. There is no wonder that Romeo and Juliet develop their love at a tremendous speed. Their attitude to love and marriage is both fanatic and romantic. Just in one day, they fall in love with each other and then make a secret courtship and marriage without caring about the feud. What they care about is their love but nothing. In renaissance period, the thought of humanism influences people. Humanism is a group of philosophies and ethical perspectives which emphasize the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and generally prefers individual thought and evidence (rationalism, empiricism), over established doctrine or faith (fideism). It pays much attention to the individual. This thought also influences their thought on love. They believe love is an emotion between the two persons and it cannot be interfered by others. Humanism leads to the extreme prevalence of individualism. Thus people are indifferent to having a sense of social responsibility and a sense of duty, and the interpersonal relationship is also very cold.Ⅱ.The Butterfly Lovers as an Example to Demonstrate Chinese Views on Love2. 1 The Development and Story of the Butterfly LoversKnown as one of top four folk love stories of ancient China, the story of ButterflyLovers (梁祝) or Love Story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai (internationally famous as The Butterfly Lovers) is as famous as The Story of The Lady White Snake(白蛇传), Story of Mengjianglv(孟姜女) and Story of Niulang and Zhinv(牛郎织女). Among them, the story of Butterfly Lovers is the most famous and influential one and also is the only one that makes the extensive influence throughout the world. This story has more than 1,470 years of history. It is known to every household and undoubtedly is an unsurpassed classic through the ages. From the ancient time to the present, innumerous people were deeply touched by this story. In China, the Story of Liang Shanbo(梁山伯) and Zhu Yingtai(祝英台) is crowned as Oriental Romeo and Juliet. The story of The Butterfly Lovers initially appeared in a book called Jinlouzi(金镂子) in south Dynasty, approximately more than 1400 years ago. Since then, in different dynasties, the relevant stories can be heard easily. In Yuan Dynasty, Bai Renpu(白仁甫) created it into an opera, and became one of Chinese classic operas in history. In 1950s, Chen Gang(陈钢) composed the internationally famous violin concerto themed with Liangzhu, and in 1954, ex-premier Zhou Enlai introduced the movie named The Butterfly Lovers, China’s first colored opera-type artistic movie, to the journalists of the world when he attended at the Geneva Conference, and then this movie based on the love story was widely called Chinese Romeo and Juliet. In a short time, this story becomes internationally famous. The daughter of Mr. Zhu, a rich and influential man in Shangyu(上虞,today under the administration of Shaoxing, Zhejiang province), was Zhu Yingtai. She was a naughty but beautiful girl, and disguised as a man to go to Hangzhou for learning. On her way, he met with a learner named Liang Shanbo from Kuaiji, today’s Shaoxing. They felt like the old friend at the first meeting, and then they became the sworn brother under the willows. Since then, they learnt and lived together in Wangsong Academy of Hangzhou for three years. During their study and life, they helped each other and made a deep affection to each other. Liang Shanbo was too honest to recognize the real identity of Zhu Yingtai. In the meantime, Zhu Yingtai in heart deeply loved Liang Shanbo. Three years later, Zhu Yingtai’s father urged her to come back Zhu Yingtai took the jade-made hanging butterfly object of water fan to her teacher’s wife as the keepsake of matchmaking. On her departure, Liang Shanbo’s eighteen send-offs were the most famous part of whole story and the best show of Liang Shanbo’saffection to Zhu Yingtai. And it is also the classical section of The Butterfly Lovers, a classic of Yue Opera in history of Chinese opera history. On the way to see off Zhu Yingtai, Liang Shanbo was also in confusion though Zhu Yingtai gave him many hints for many times. After he returned and taught by his teacher’s wife, he absolutely knew the real identity of Zhu Yingtai, and he was quite joyful to rush to family of Zhu Yingtai for proposal. Unfortunately, Zhu Yingtai’s father had married Zhu Yingtai to Ma Wencai(马文才), the son of Governor of Shangyu. Liang Shanbo was desperately and sorrowfully had a meeting with Zhu Yingtai. His happiness got away, and from then on, he got depressed and gloomy and several days later he died of the depression and desperation. Hearing of this piece of news, Zhu Yingtai was in large grief. On her wedding day, she begged her father to go to the tomb of Liang Shanbo, otherwise, she never agreed to marry Ma Wencai. Her father had no other choice but agreed her requirement. In the front of the tomb of Zhu Yingtai, she heartbreakingly cried for a long time. Suddenly, the murky sky over a dark earth, and the thunder rumbled and lightening flashed. Subsequently, the tomb opened and Zhu Yingtai jumped into it, the tomb restored to itself. After all ended, two butterflies flied around the tomb, the local people said this couple of butterflies turned from Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai.2 .2 The Butterfly Lovers Ignited the Ancient Chinese Ideal of LoveThe story of The Butterfly Lovers is one of the best works of ancient Chinese folk literature due to its highly thoughtful and artistic content. The story is deeply rooted in the Chinese folk tradition and it is very close to the hearts of the ordinary people. It eulogizes free love, praises women, and spreads the spirit of anti-feudalism. It has been very popular through thousands of years owing to its profound themes. The real and sincere love between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is borne out by their actions, and this has earned them a place among the great lovers of many legends. When Yingtai, who is disguised as a man, meets Shanbo on her way to Hangzhou to pursue knowledge, she has a good impression on him at the first sight. After a further exchange of each other’s personalities, a spontaneous feeling of admiration for him falls into Yingtai’s heart. Shanbo not only has a clean and honest upbringing, he also has a very open and kind personality. So Yingtai agrees with Shanbo’s proposal that they regard each other as brothersand look after each other in school. Then they go together to Hangzhou to study and become close friends. During the three years of study, they helped each other and both do very well in learning. They also have developed a feeling of love toward each other. Yingtai loves Shanbo secretly and she is completely captivated by his excellent character and literary talent. At the same time, Shanbo is also struck with admiration for Yingtai’s brilliance and ingenuity. This is the Ancient Chinese Ideal of Love. The love is prudent, serious and realistic.2. 3 Butterfly Lovers’ Characteristics and the Characteristics of Chines e CultureThe Chinese culture is focused on the harmony between man and nature, which is family-based and pays more attention to the individual responsibilities and obligations. The characteristics of Chinese people are subtle, deep-thinking, focused on human ethnics, having dependent personality awareness. Although Zhu Yingtai is in deep love with Liang Shanbo, she has always been ashamed to express her feeling directly when they are classmates for three years till Eighteen-Li Pavilion. Until that time, she uses words six times to express her love indirectly. At first, she takes great pains to use a variety of metaphor and hint, but Liang Shanbo is very dumb and can not understand. Although she is very angry with him, she is still reluctant to disclose the truth. On the stage, this scene is shown very interesting to the audience; on the other hand, it has lost the best opportunity for the two lovers to make their relationship clear on the plot development. From the process of the plot development in the story, we can see that the two lovers are sober, rational and mature. Their love arises from their getting along with each other from day to night every day. They fall in love after knowing each other.Their characteristic is because China has being a society based on group, serious as a whole, focused on human ethics and the pursuit of the unity between individual and object. It puts emphasis on achieving self-worth from the existence of a whole, having stressing deposit heaven to human desire to artificially suppress their passions and seeing the bole pursuit of love as deviant and depraved behavior, which will be condemned by everyone. Therefore, in defense of their love, the action taken by Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai is passive and powerless.Ⅲ. Romeo and Juliet as an Example to Show the Renaissance Concept of Love3.1 The Sources and Main Content of the Romeo and JulietThe play begins with a large fight between the Capulets and the Montagues, two prestigious families in Verona, Italy. These families have been fighting for quite some time, and the Prince declares that their next public brawl will be punished by death. When the fight is over, Romeo’s cousin Benvolio tries to cheer him of his melancholy. Romeo reveals that he is in love with a woman named Rosaline, but she has chosen to live a life of chastity. Romeo and Benvolio are accidentally invited to their enemy’s party; Benvolio convinces Romeo to go.At the party, Romeo locks eyes with a young woman named Juliet. They instantly fall in love, but they do not realize that their families are mortal enemies. When they realize each other’s identities, they are devastated, but they cannot help the way that they feel. Romeo sneaks into Juliet’s yard after the party and proclaims his love for her. She return s his sentiments and the two decide to marry. The next day, Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar Lawrence; an event witnessed by Juliet’s Nurse and Romeo’s loyal servant, Balthasar. They plan to meet in Juliet’s chambers that night.Romeo visits his best friend Mercutio and his cousin Benvolio but his good mood is cutailed. Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, starts a verbal quarrel with Romeo, which soon turns into a duel with Mercutio. Romeo tries to stop the fight but it is too late: Tybalt kills Mercutio. Romeo, enraged, retaliates by killing Tybalt. Once Romeo realizes the consequences of his actions, he hides at Friar Lawrence’s cell.Friar Lawrence informs Romeo that he has been banished from Verona and will be killed if he stays. The Friar suggests Romeo spend the night with Juliet, then leave for Mantua in the morning. He tells Romeo that he will attempt to settle the Capulet and Montague dispute so Romeo can later return to a united family. Romeo takes his advice, spending one night with Juliet before fleeing Verona.Juliet’s mother, completely unaware of her daughter's secret marriage to Romeo, informs Juliet that she will marry a man named Paris in a few days. Juliet, outraged, refuses tocomply. Her parents tell her that she must marry Paris and the Nurse agrees with them. Juliet asks Friar Lawrence for advice, insisting she would rather die than marry Paris. Fr. Lawrence gives Juliet a potion which will make her appear dead and tells her to take it the night before the wedding. He promises to send word to Romeo - intending the two lovers be reunited in the Capulet vault.Juliet drinks the potion and everybody assumes that she is dead —including Balthasar, who immediately tells Romeo. Friar Lawrence’s letter fails to reach Romeo, so he assumes that his wife is dead. He rushes to Juliet’s tomb and, in deep grief, drinks a vial of poison. Moments later, Juliet wakes to find Romeo dead and kills herself due to grief. Once the families discover what happened, they finally end their bitter feud. Thus the youngsters' deaths bring the families together. Romeo And Juliet is a true tragedy in the literary sense because the families gather sufficient self-knowledge to correct their behaviour but not until it is too late to save the situation.3.2 Humanism Showed in Romeo and JulietThe western culture is people-oriented, paying more attention to the individualism, putting emphasis on human rights and the competition between people, focusing on establishing self-worth through personal struggle and competition. It inspires people’s initiative and creativity. This kind of phenomenon revealed in the literature works that the protagonists in the love story adopt fanatic and impetuous attitude towards love. They love each other in a way as they want and they can give up anything so long as they love each other. They only value their own interests and are indifferent to anything else. What they care about is their love but nothing. The dialogue between Romeo and Juliet clearly expresses this attitude, Juliet: O Romeo, Romeo! Where art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet. Romeo: I take thee at thy word. Call me but love and I’ll be new baptized; Henceforth I never will be Romeo. (Shakespeare, 1984)3.3 Romeo and Juliet, the Characteristics and LimitationsThe characteristics of western people are warm, lively, bold pursuit of worldly life, paying more attention to the enjoyment of life, believing in love at first sight, having a verystrong independent personality and awareness. In Romeo and Juliet, the two lovers express their love with the most direct words and most enthusiastic language and their love is hot and explicit. Seeing Juliet at the ball, Romeo looks her as a pearl from heaven landing on the earth and a representative of beautiful women and he invites her to dance positively. After the ball, Romeo flies through the walls with the love and comes to Juliet’s window to tell he “Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon. It is my lady, O, it is my love!”(Shakespeare, 1984) the monologue of Juliet on a moon night in the garden is also very bold and she promises to entrust her fate to Romeo, willing to follow him to everywhere of the earth. Such a direct, bold and emotional expression is just like a surging flood. However, it also has some limitations. Humanism leads to the extreme prevalence of individualism. Thus people are indifferent to having a sense of social responsibility and a sense of duty, and the interpersonal relationship is also very cold.Ⅳ. The Contrast of the Eastern and Western Views on Love4. 1 The Similarities of the Views on love:The East and the West are willing to die for the pursuit of loveLove is an ever-lasting topic in world literature. In the western country, Romeo and Juliet is one of the world-known love tragedies of Shakespeare. Many people are so familiar with its lines and words that they can even recite them. In China, there is also a best known play of love tragedy- the Butterfly lovers. Although these two stories are in different cultures, they all praises women and they all dare to die for the pursuit of love. It is love that makes the world full of happiness. Both The Butterfly Lovers and Romeo and Juliet eulogize love. And the two plays are added much tragic atmosphere by the death of these two couples of young lovers. In the Butterfly lovers, when knowing Shanbo’s death, Yingtai holds a memorial ceremony for him without taking notice of feudal customs and family rules. When her father compels her to hold wedding ceremony with Ma Wencai, she throws herself into Shanbo’s grave. There, the legend reads that Yingtai’s tears move the God so much that the clouds themselves throw of tears naturally over Yingtai’s grief. Then the earth beneath her cracks open and the miserable Yingtai commits suicide by jumping into the open grave. Miraculously, the young couple is transformed into butterflies. Arising into the sky, they flutter and dance side by side among the flowers and in the sky never to be separated again. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare eulogizes the true love through the action taken by Romeo and Juliet. In the ball scene, Romeo sees Juliet, is attracted by her beauty, and falls in love with her at once. The love is developed between each other, and Juliet also falls in love with Romeo immediately. In the balcony scene, they express their love to each other without taking care of the feud between two families. When Juliet’s father compels her to marry Paris, Juliet decides to accept the Friar’s advice and take his potion. It will make her unconscious before all people from the outward appearance. But Romeo fails to receive Friar Lawrence’s message, so when he sees Juliet’s “dead body”, he thinks that Juliet is “dead” and he drinks the poison without hesitation. After Juliet is awakening, she find that Romeo has died, and then she catches hold of Romeo’s dagger and stabs herself. Romeo and Julie surelyshow as wonderful sincerity to each other.4.2 The differences of the views on love4.2.1 Differences in love attitudesButterfly Lovers: prudent and indirectLiang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai’s attitudes toward love are prudent, serious and realistic. Yingtai has a good impression on Shanbo on her way to Hangzhou, but she does not express he love to him directly. She buries the love in her heart for more than three years. When they study together in Hangzhou, Shanbo devotes himself to taking care of Yingtai. After understanding Shanbo is morally upright and highly educated man, she makes up her mind to marry him. It is at this time that Yingtai asks the teacher’s wife to act as a matchmaker for Shanbo and her.Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai study together for three years at the same school, but they take each other for brothers. Zhu Yingtai does not tell Liang Shanbo that she is a girl. Until their departure at the Eightenn-Li Pavilion, Zhu Yingtai only gives hints to Liang Shanbo and does not tell her real identity directly. Liang Shanbo is much more monotonous. When their love is suppressed by their family backgrounds and the rigid feudal system, the two beloved have no courage to fight for their love and freedom. Although they have the spirit of death for their love, they have no bravery to step out of the ethic and take positive actions. Romeo and Juliet: open and directRomeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight, the feeling between them is very passionate throughout the play. Their love is bold, frank, faithful, which has moving and highly aesthetic significance. They love each other regardless of their family feud and their parents’oppositions. They secretly marry with the help of Friar Laurence. This is also the performance of aspect of western culture- individualism. Traits of western individualism are “I” identity, achievement of personal goals, each person is encouraged to stand out, be unique and express themselves, individual right seen as most important, less distinction between in group and out group, relying or being independent on themselves. Individualism is the core. And in has deep historical foundation in the western countries. Individualism stresses personality and everyone has his own right, equality and freedom. In marriage, the Americansfully embody the characteristics of individualism. As is shown in the play Romeo and Juliet, the lovers pursue their own rights to love he or she loves, have the freedom to marry he or she wants to marry, thus to gain the happiness.4.2.2 Different aesthetic trendButterfly Lovers: restrainedChinese civilization begins with a self-sufficient peasant economy and Chinese people pursue the overall harmony as the extreme beauty and promote the internal development through the morality as the basic characteristic of the values. This feature is conductive to China’s social security for a long time, but it inhibits the struggle of self-personality and the strength of revolting the fate of the Chinese people during the process of the need to create an updated history. Zhu Yingtai, just having the idea that parental orders can not be breached, finds a compromise and agrees on a marriage with Ma Wencai. The ending of throwing herself into the grave and becoming a butterfly is only a helpless choice. With a blood and patriarchal system which imprisons her thoughts, she does not break through the home rules to seek the freedom.Romeo and Juliet: freedomWestern culture has two origins: one is the ancient Greek culture and the other is the Bible. It is well known that ancient Greek though put emphasis on freedom, rationalism, glorification of both body and mind, and a high praise for the dignity and the value of individualism. This kind of thought has had great effect on Western philosophers. Under the role of aesthetic ideas of the individualistic values, the westerners pursue the more respect for oneself, love of life. Meanwhile, the western tragedies express the aesthetic idea of encouraging struggle and this idea has played the promoting role in the development of western society.Romeo, in the first Act of Romeo and Juliet, has been immersed in the love of a girl Rosaline, but in the second Act, he is faithless to his first lover as soon as he sees Juliet. He disregards that she is the daughter of his feud and soon they fall in love in the first sight and marry secretly. Their love is so simple. They even do not consider whether their love is appropriate. Juliet conducts a series of complete resistance and her tragedy is the results ofsome accidental factors rather than her personal reasons.V. ConclusionGoing over Butterfly lovers and the Romeo and Juliet, we are often deeply touched by their beautiful love story and tragic atmosphere. As two world known love tragedies, the two stories share many similarities. Due to different background and their different bringing-up environment, we should also notice the differences between them, thus having a better understanding to the two literature works. In Romeo and Juliet, the young couples are nobles, and they love each other regardless of their family feud. They pursue what they want courageously and love each other freely, trying to pursue their own happiness. By contrast, Chinese is influenced by Confucianism. Thus in Butterfly lovers, the protagonists are ordinary people and they hold a very prudent attitude to their love, following the traditional doctrine well.Bibliography[1] Georgopoulou, X. Contrast of Marriage View between China and WestAbstract:As the ceaseless development that open to the outside world,Chinesepeople come to realize the differences between Chinese Culture and Western Culture can be showed in many aspects, like Marriage View. This essay aims at analysing the major differences between Chinese Marriage View and Western Marriage View by comparing the different standard of spouse selection, the purpose of marriage.Key words:Marriage view, standard of spouse selection;the purpose of marriage Although the typical purpose of every marriage is to show the society that the two people are husband and wife legally, there are a lot of differences between Chinese and Westerners concerning with their marriage view.1.Different standard of spouse selectionFor Chinese, many factors need to be taken into consideration if he or she is choosing a husband or a wife or a husband except for love.He or she need to check whether the one who is going to become his or her spouse has the similar family background, education background and social and economic status with he or she or not. While for westerners, their marriage is based on love and they care less about other things when they are finding a partner. They emphasize more on finding a spouse who has the similar habit and character with them.We can take the marriage of English Prince William and his Princess Kate as example. If William cares much about Kate's family background, she can never become the princess of England. The reason why such a difference exists can be divided into three aspects. From Chinese point of view, to start with ,back Chinese Ancient Time,it is quite normal that parents arrange marriage for their children in which the parents cares much about the family background of their daughter-in-law or son-in-low.This standard is deeply rooted in Chinese people's mind and still plays a important role in modern Chinese society. The next reason need to appeal to the Chinese "concept of the face".The parents and even the daughter or the son may feel losing face if they tell others that their son or daughter marries someone who has lower family background or social and economic status and education background. The Chinese "concept of connection" also plays a big role in making such a choice. For some Chinese, marriage has added value apart from finding a spouse to company themselves. It can broaden their social connection network and benefit them in their life or professions since they can make use of the social network of their spouse's.From the westerner's point of view,we know that because of deeply influenced by the the Renaissance and the Enlightenment Movement, they believe that everyone has the majestic and unassailable right to pursue love and it is morally wrong to marry someone who they do not fond of. In addition, they think highly of individualism and they insist that they can achieve success through their own efforts,so they do not care much whether their spouse or their spouse's familybackground can equip them some advantages in economical aspects or in social status.Apart from that, they think that marriage is just their personal issue,so it has nothing to do with other people and they also do not pay much attention on others' opinion about their marriage.2.The purpose of marriageThere are two basic purposes why two Chinese become husband and wife in the past time. One of the purpose is to combine the advantages of the two family and to expand the relative alliance.Another one is to carry the family line, especially for the bridegroom's family.Although with the development of the Chinese society, more and more people claim that their marriage is on the basis of love.It turns out that some of them go too far and more and more Chinese youth tend to have naked marriage and flash marriage, which is followed by the increasing divorce rate. There is a Chinese saying that of all who lack filial piety, the worst is who has no children.Procreation is a vital factor in a marriage and child is of great help in maintaining a marriage. For sack of the children, some couples will maintain their marriage even though they do not love each other any more, which can be the reason why some Chinese people do not loyal to their marriage and have affairs with others. In westerners' eyes, marriage is the proof of love and a typical sign of romantic relationship. They marry someone because they want to find a life partner and gain physiological and psychological satisfaction. They care much more about their personal need rather than the need or their responsibility of the family.Of course, they do procreation, too, but they just do not think of it as the primary goal of thir marriage. If they do not love each other, they will resort to divorce, because they think it is unjust to keep their marriage just for their children,so it is quite normal to see that an American family is consist of step-parents and step-children.Through analysis,we know that marriage view between China and West is different, especially in the standard of spouse selection and the purpose of marriage. With the accelerate of the process in integration,we are becoming citizens of the global society,we need to know and respect such differences in two cultures.Only in this way,we can adapt to new cultures and reduce the culture shock between different cultures.Reference:Linell Davis.中西文化之鉴---跨文化交际教程.[M].北京:外语教学与研究出版社,1999.。
