If yes, then you can go for environmental engineering and work to make world a better place to live. Environmental engineering is a an interesting thing to do. So, you will surely enjoy your studies. Here, in this article, I am going to tell you almost everything about this field. Following are the points which I will cover:What is environmental engineering?Main works that environmental engineers doWorks of environmental engineerHow to Become an Environmental Engineer?Important Qualities of Environmental EngineersCareers Related to Environmental Engineering So, let’s get started with this Blog post. What is Environmental Engineering?Environmental engineering is a branch of Engineering. It aims to protect the mass from the degrading effects of environment. Anenvironmental engineer tries to improve atmosphere. They work to improve recycling, health, water, and air quality.Environmental Engineering is not a new concept. It is in fashion since the beginning of the civilization. Ancient people also dealt with the challenges of the environment. They made the methods to treat solid waste and sewage. With the rise of industrial revolution air pollution level also increased. Thus, people started to worry about air quality and soil pollution. So by this, we can understand the need for environmental engineering. Environmental engineering helps in developing methods to clean the environment.Joseph Bazalgette was the first Environmental Engineer. He came into this profession in the19th century. He was a chief engineer of London’s metropolitan board of works. Bazalgette got fame for his invention of the sewer system in London. Invention helped in eradicating epidemics and cleansing of river Thames. This idea prompted in his mind after unbearable stench from the Thames. The river got polluted due to sewage discharge in it. Thames was the only source of drinking water for the city. Westminster of evacuated due to the strong smell.Major works that environmental engineers doEnvironmental Engineers work on engineering principles, soil science, biology. With the help of these principles, they make solutions for environmental problems. There are various responsibilities to environmental engineer such as:Preventing the release of hazardous chemicals into the air, water, and soil. This field is a separate environmental discipline. People concern about water, air and soil pollution. Thus, environmental engineering is gaining popularity in recent times. Engineers make every kind of efforts to stop the environmental degradation. So what exactly engineers do to protect the environment? They first detect the presence of pollutants.Once they know, they track them to know the source of origin. When the source of origin of pollutant is known, then it can be reduced. There are various industries who are polluting the environment. Engineers try to find the ways to reduce the pollution coming out through such industries. Knowledge of chemistry, fluid dynamics, and biology help in a great way.As you all know the population is growing day by day. To settle them various actions have been taken. Such actions may have a bad impact on the environment. To tackle such things environmental engineers come up with new ideas regularly. For instance, development of CNG, Gobar gas, solar panels, etc. Such inventions reduce the pollution and keep the environment clean.Works of Environmental EngineersSolid Waste managementHumans are the consumer society. They produce a lot of waste. What all dispose of such as food packaging, broken electronics, excreta comes in waste. Most of the developed countries have efficient waste management techniques. They recycle the solid waste very easily. But developing countries are still facing problems. Lack of technology and awareness are the main causes. Environmental engineers work day and night to provide sufficient ways to dispose of the waste. They are coming up with strategies to curb the problem of waste management.Strategies to reduce wasteCompostingIncinerationLandfillRecyclingWindowcompostingLand-farmingIn-vessel compostingMechanical, biological treatment Mechanical heat treatmentMolten salt oxidationPlasma arc waste disposalPyrolysisRefuse-derived fuelSewage treatmentTunnel composting These are some of the ways to mitigate waste. Engineers are still developing new methods to make life good.Water Supply managementExpanding population has expanding demands. Water is essential to sustain. Every form of life is dependant on water. Freshwater is of vital importance to living. As you know how muchthere is a scarcity of water in society. On the other hand, there are instances of a flood. Both flood or drought put a strain on lives. It affects humans directly and indirectly. Over the last decade, Europe faced both drought and flood. Recently, Cape Town was declared as the zero water country. They faced the biggest crisis in last one decade. Moreover, the government has to pay high charges for clean up operations.Environment engineers are playing a vital role here. They identify the origin of the problem. They develop the tools or machines to fight this issue. Building of canals, irrigation fields, sprinklers are the inventions to protect from droughts. These things help to provide an adequate amount of water.Sewage system, water treatment plants, are some of the ways to tackle the floods and recycle the water for various purposes. Removing waste water is also equally important. If wastewater is out of our houses only then, we can ensure good health. Sources of wastewater at home are- toilets, showers, cloth washing. Production of wastewater is not limited to home only. Industries are also the reason for wastewater. There are many hazardous substances industries produce. If they leak in water, then it could be a sign of danger. So it is necessary to treat wastewater to ensure a healthy supply of water.Air Pollution ManagementYou all are aware of the air pollution. Its a major issue in many countries. to curb this problemvarious countries have started clean air act. There are many countries who are the big polluters. Engineers have developed the ways to fight with the problem of air pollution. Development of CNG, solar panels for cars and homes, are some of the ways to clean the air. Engineers are also coming up with the ways to manage toxic substances. Now the next-next thing that comes in air pollution is a greenhouse effect. Engineers are trying to reduce the output of carbon dioxide gas to limit the temperature rise. Some more duties need to be performed by Environmental EngineersIn the above blog, I have already told you about the duties of an environmental engineer. Let’s have a recap on it in brief. They prepare environmental investigation reports. Review it and take actions to protect the environment.Designing of projects to protect environment. Water treatment plants, air pollution control mechanism.Technical support for environment cleaning projects and taking actions for it.Obtaining data, analysing it and quality-control checks.Monitoring the progress of Environment protection programs.Checking industries to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. How to Become an Environmental EngineerYou must have a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering to be an environmental engineer. Unit 1 Text: What are Environmental Science and Engineering?
环境科学与工程是什么?
We differentiate between social science and natural science in that the former deals with the study of people and how they live together as families, tribes, communities, races, and nations, and the latter deals with the study of nature and the physical world. 我们用来区分社会科学和自然科学的是,前者从事研究人作为家庭、部落、 社区,种族,和国家如何生活在一起的,后者从事自然和物理世界的研究。
The historical focus of study for environmental scientists has been, of course, the natural environment. 历来环境科学家研究的焦点,理所应当是自然环境。 By this, we mean the atmosphere, the land, the water and their inhabitants as differentiated from the built environment.
With qualitative logic we cannot identify what “too high” means—we need quantitative logic to do that.

Unit1 General Introduction to Environmental Science and Engineering Ⅱ

Unit1 General Introduction to Environmental Science and Engineering Ⅱ

General Introduction to EnvironmentalScience andEngineering ⅡEnvironmental engineering:Environmental engineering is the application of science and engineering principles to improve the natural environment (air, water, and/or land resources), to provide healthy water, air, and land for human habitation (house or home) and for other organisms, and to remediate polluted sites. It involves waste water management and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, environmental sustainability, and public health issues as well as a knowledge of environmental engineering law.It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposedconstruction projects.Environmental engineersconducthazardous-waste management studies to evaluate the significance of such hazards, advise on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps.Environmental engineers also design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems as well as addresslocal and worldwideenvironment issues such as the effects of acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources. Atmanyuniversities, Environmental Engineering programs follow either theDepartment of Civil Engineering or The Department of Chemical Engineering atEngineering faculties. Environmental “civil” engineers focus on hydrology, water resources management, bioremediation, and water treatment plant design. Environmental “chemical”engineers, on the other hand, focus on environmental chemistry, advanced air and water treatment technologies and separation processes.Additionally, engineers are more frequently obtaining specialized training in law (J.D.)and are utilizing their technical expertise in the practices of Environmental engineering law.[citation needed].About four percent of environmental engineers go on to obtain Board Certification in their specialty area(s) of environmental engineering (Board Certified Environmental Engineer or BCEE) [].Most jurisdictions also imposelicensing and registration requirements.Development of environmental engineering:Ever since people first recognized that their health and well-being were related to the quality of their environment, they have applied thoughtful principles to attempt to improve the quality of their environment. The ancient Harappan civilization utilized early sewers in some cities. The Romans constructedaqueducts to prevent drought and tocreate a clean, healthful water supply for the metropolis of Rome.In the 15th century,Bavaria created laws restricting the development and degradation of alpine country that constituted the region’s water supply. The field emerged as a separate environmental discipline during the middle third of the 20th century in response to widespread public concern about water and pollution and increasingly extensive environmental quality degradation. However, its roots extend back to early efforts in public health engineering.Modern environmental engineering began in London in the mid-19th century when Joseph Bazalgette designed the first major sewerage system that reduced the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera. The introduction of drinking water treatment and sewage treatment in industrialized countriesreduced waterborne diseases from leading causes of death to rarities. In many cases, as societies grew, actions that were intended to achieve benefits for those societies had longer-term impacts which reduced other environmental qualities. One example is the widespread application of DDT to control agricultural pests in the years following World War Ⅱ. While the agricultural benefits were outstanding and crop yields increased dramatically, thus reducing world hunger substantially, and malaria was controlled better than itever had been, numerous species were brought to the verge of extinction due to the impact of the DDT on their reproductive cycles. The story of DDT as vividly told in Rachel Carson’ s“Silent Spring” is considered to be birth of the modern environmental movement and the dev elopment of the modern field of “environmental engineering”.Conservation movements and laws restricting public actions that would harm the environment have been developed by various societies for millennia.Notable examples are the laws decreeing the construction of sewers in London and Paris in the 19th century and the creation of the U.S. national park system in the early 20th century.Scope of Environmental Engineering:Briefly speaking, the main task of environmental engineers is to protect public health by protecting (from further degradation), preserving (the present condition of), and enhancing the environment. Environmental engineering is the application of science and engineering principles to the environment. Some consider environmental engineering to include the development of sustainable processes. There are several divisions of the field of environmental engineering.Environmentalimpact assessment and mitigation: In this division, engineers and scientists use a systemic identification andevaluation process to assess the potential impacts of a proposed project, plans, programs, policies, or legislative actions upon the physical-chemical, biological, cultural, and socioeconomic components on environmental conditions. They apply scientific and engineering principles to evaluate if there are likely to be any adverse impacts to water quality, air quality, habitat quality, flora and fauna, agricultural capacity, traffic impacts, social impacts, ecological impacts, noise impacts, visual (landscape) impacts, etc. If impacts are expected, they then develop mitigation measures to limit or prevent such impacts. An example of a mitigation measure would be the creation of wetlands in a nearby location to mitigate the filling in of wetlands necessary for a road development if it is not possible to reroute the road. The practice of environmental assessment was initiated on January 1, 1970, the effective date of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in the United States. Since that time, more than 100 developing and developed nations either have planned specific analogous laws or have adoptedprocedure used elsewhere. NEPA is applicable to all federal agencies in the United States.Watersupplyandtreatment:Engineersandscientistsworktosecu rewatersuppliesforpotableandagriculturaluse.Theyevaluatethewaterb alancewithinawatershedanddeterminetheavailablewatersupply, thewaterneededforvariousneedsinthatwatershed, theseasonalcyclesofwaterm ovementthroughthewatershedandtheydevelopsystemstostore, treat,an dconveywaterforvarioususes.Wateristreatedtoachievewaterqualityobj ectivesfortheenduses.Inthecaseofpotablewatersupply, wateristreatedto minimizetheriskofinfectiousdiseasetransmission, theriskofnoninfectio usillness, andtocreateapalatablewaterflavor.Waterdistributionsystems aredesignedandbuilttoprovideadequatewaterpressureandflowratesto meetvariousend-userneedssuchasdomesticuse,firesuppression,andirri gation.Wastewater conveyance and treatment:Mosturbanandmanyruralareasnolongerdischargehumanw astedirectlytothelandthroughouthouse,septic,and/orhoneybucket systems, butratherdepositsuchwasteintowater and conveyitfromhouseholdsviasewersystems. Environmental Ethics

The three are in conflict: Consequentialists believe in the suffering of a few for the benefit of many
i.Biblioteka . the sacrifice of an innocent life to prevent the deaths of others
Environmental Ethics

Categorical imperative

value-laden rules based on the hope that all people would follow the rule Key Point: Universalizability – if an act is acceptable for one it is acceptable for all
While Categorical imperative theorists say that if life is valued all life has to be. Common Question: The little white lie? Do I look good?

Utilitarian – hurts feelings to tell the truth, so why bother

Environmental Ethics

Can Economic Growth and Environmental Protection occur simultaneously?

A Business is in business to make a profit, not usually to protect the environment. Environmental Regulations force them to care!
Environmental Ethics

Deontological theory acts must be judged as good or bad, and you do good for the sake of doing good, for the good itself, regardless of the consequence (Ten Commandments, Just obey)
Environmental Ethics

An ethic –

Common misconception: an ethical person is not a good person or bad person provide a systematic framework for making decisions where values conflict dependent upon the individuals moral value, based on personal ethical system For example: system of ethics to maximize pleasure (hedonist)

Environmental Ethics

Consequentialist ethical theory

(early 1800’s) a.k.a. Utilitarianism maximize pleasure/minimize pain Benefit/Cost Analysis is Utilitarian since money equals happiness (based on hedonism) Don’t believe in rules, the consequences must be weighed against gains
Introduction to Environmental Engineering
Dr. Glass Environmental Ethics
Environmental Ethics
Ethics are discussed by Philosophers, Lawyers, Conservationists etc. “Sustainable Development” - growth that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs
Environmental Ethics

Common Question: The little white lie?

Utilitarian – hurts feelings to tell the truth, so why bother Deontologists – hurting feelings in the short term is better, the trust that is built will be stronger Categorical Imperative theorists – also tell the truth because you wouldn’t want to walk around looking ugly as well, everyone would dress bad

Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) are required by legislature

Prior to design stage Impact on water quality, wetlands, and endangered species Long term ecological damage

Ethics –

Environmental Ethics
Many systems of ethics exist, but the key is that a system must be a defensible one If not, a rational person would abandon and find a better system Three different systems are presented here
