Sclerosis(MS)is a disease in which the patient's immune(免疫的)system attacks the central nervous system. This can lead to numerous physical and mental symptoms,as the disease affects the transmission of electrical signals between the body and the brain. However, the human body, being a flexible, adaptable system, can compensate for some level of damage,so a person with MS can look and feel fine even though the disease is present.Multiple Sclerosis(多发性硬化症)24.Paragraph2_______A.The relapsing form of MSB.The cause of MSC.The primary progressive form of MSE.The development of MSF.The treatment for MS2MS patients can have one of two main varieties of the disease:the relapsing form(复发型)and the primary progressive form.In the relapsing form, the disease progresses in a series of jumps;at times it is in remission(减轻).which means that a person's normal functions return for a period of time before the system goes into relapse and the disease again becomes more active. This is the most common form of MS;80-90%of people have this form of the disease when they are first diagnosed. The relapse-remission cycle can continue for many years.Eventually, however,Ioss of physical and cognitive functions starts to take place and the remissions become less frequent.Multiple Sclerosis(多发性硬化症)25.Paragraph3______B.The cause of MSC.The primary progressive form of MSE.The development of MSF.The treatment for MS3In the primary progressive form of MS,there are no remissions and a continual but steady loss of physical and cognitive functions takes place. This condition affects about10-15%of sufferers at person-provided that a reasonable standard of care is received. In some cases a near-normal life span is possible. (A is B...;A is 11 School Lunch学校午餐Research has shown that over half the children in Britain who take their own lunches to school do not eat properly in the middle o f the day. In Britain schools have to provide meals at lunchtime. Children can choose to bring their own food or have lunch at the school canteen. One shocking finding of this research is that school meals are much healthier than lunches prepared by parents. There are strict st andards for the preparation of school meals, which have to include one portion of fruit and one of vegetables, as well as meat, a da iry item and starchy food like bread or pasta. Lunchboxes examined by researchers contained sweet drinks, crisps and chocolate bars. Children consume twice as much sugar as they should at lunchtime. The research will provide a better understanding of why the percentage of overweight students in Britain has increased in the last decade. Unfortunately, the government cannot criticise parents, but it can remind them of the nutritional value of milk, fruit and vegetables. Small changes in their children's diet can aff ect their future health. Children can easily develop bad eating habits at this age, and parents are the only ones who can prevent it 12 A Powerful Influence There can be no doubt at all that the Internet has made a huge difference to our lives. Parents are worried that children spend too much time playing on the Internet, hardly ever doing anything else in their spare time. Naturally, parents are curious to find out why the Internet is so attractive, and they want to know if it can be harmful for their children. Should parents worry if their child ren are spending that much time staring at their computers?Obviously, if children are bent over their computers for hours, absorbed in some game, instead of doing their homework, then so mething is wrong. Parents and children could decide how much use the child should make of the Internet, and the child should giv e his or her word that00it00won0t interfere with homework. If the child is not holding to this arrangement, the parent can take m ore drastic steps dealing with a child's use of the Internet is not much different from negotiating any other sort of bargain about b ehaviour. Any parent who is seriously alarmed about a child's behaviour should make an appointment to discuss the matter with a teacher. Spending time in front of the screen does not necessarily affect a child's performance at school. Even if a child is absolut ely crazy about using the Internet, he or she is probably just going through a phase, and in a few months there will be something e lse to worry about!13 The Old Gate古老之门In the Middle Ages the vast majority of European cities had walls around them. This was partly for defensive reasons but another factor was the need to keep out anyone regarded as undesirable, like people with contagious diseases. The Old City of London gat es were all demolished by the end of the 18th century. The last of London's gates was removed a century ago, but by a stroke of lu ck, it was never destroyed. This gate is, in actual fact, not called a gate at all; its name is Temple Bar, and it marked the boundary between the Old City of London and Westminster. In 1878 the Council of London took the Bar down, numbered the stones and pu t the gate in storage because its design was unfashionable it was expensive to maintain and it was blocking the traffic. The Temple Bar Trust was set up in the 1970's with the intention of returning the gate home. The aim of the trust is the preservati on of the nation's architectural heritage.Transporting the gate will mean physically pulling it down, stone by stone, removing and rebuilding it near St Paul's Cathedral. Most of the facade of the gate will probably be replaced, though there is a good chance that the basic structure will be sound. The hardest job of all, however, will be to recreate the statues of the monarchs that once stood o n top of the gate.14、Family History 家族史In an age when technology is developing faster than ever before, many people are being attracted to the idea of looking back into t he past. One way they can do this is by investigating their own family history. They can try to find out more about where their fa milies came fromAnd00what they did. This is now a fast0growing hobby, especially in countries with a fairly short history, like Australia and the U nited States. It is one thing to spend some time going through a book on family history and to take the decision to investigate your own family's past. It is quite another to carry out the research work successfully. It is easy to set about it in a disorganised way and cause your self many problems which could have been avoided with a little forward planning. If your own family stories tell you that you are connected with a famous character, whether hero or criminal, do not let this idea t ake over your research. Just treat it as an interesting possibility. A simple system for collecting and storing your information will b e adequate to start with; a more complex one may only get in your way. The most important thing, though, is to get started. Who knows what you might find15 Helen and Martin With a thoughtful sigh, Helen turned away from the window and walked back to her favourite armchair. Would her brother neve r arrive? For a brief moment, she wondered if she really cared that much.Over the years Helen had given up waiting for Martin to take an interest in her. Her feelings for him had gradually weakened unti l now, as she sat waiting for him, she experienced no more than a sister's curiosity to see what had become of her brother. Almost without warning, Martin had lost his job with a busy publishing company after spending the last eight years in New York as a key figure in the US office. Somehow the two of them hadn't bothered to keep in touch and, left alone, Helen had slowly foun d her confidence in her own judgment growing. Ignoring the wishes of her parents, she had left university halfway through her co urse and now, to the astonishment of the whole family, she was gaining a fast-growing reputation in the pages of respected art ma gazines and was actually earning enough to live on from her paintings.Of course, she took no pleasure in Martin's sudden misfortune, but she couldn't help looking forward to her brother's arrival wit h quiet satisfaction at what she had achieved.。

Britain specializes in the gift of talking. The nation doesn't manufacture much of anything. But it has lawyers, stylists and business consultants who earn their living from talk, talk and more talk. The World Foundation think tank1 says the UK's four iconic jobs today are not scientists, engineers, teachers and nurses. Instead, they're hairdressers, celebrities, management consultants and managers. But can all this talking keep the British economy going? The British government thinks it can.

The Making of a Success StoryIKEA is the world's largest furniture retailer, and man behind it is Ingvar Kamprad, one of the world's most successful entrepreneurs . Born in Sweden in 1926 , Kamprad was a natural businessman. As a child , he enjoyed selling things and made small profits from selling matches ,seeds ,and pencils in his community .When Kamprad was 17, his father gave him some money as a reward for his good grades .Naturally he used it to start up a business-IKEA.IKEA's name comes from Kamprad's initials (I.K.)and the place where he grew up (`E` and `A`). Today IKEA is known for its modern , minimalist furniture , but it was not a furniture company in the beginning .Rather, IKEA sold all kind of miscellaneous goods ,Kamprad's ware included anything that he could sell for profits at discounted prices ,including watches ,pens and stockings .IKEA first began to sell furniture through a mail-order catalogue in 1947. The furniture was all designed and made by manufacturers near Kamprad's home. Initial sales were very encouraging , so Kamprad expanded the product line . Furniture was such a successful aspect of the business that IKEA became solely a furniture company in 1951.In 1953 IKEA opend its first showroom in Almhult ,Sweden. IKEA is known today for its spacious stores with furniture in attractive settings ,but in the early 1950s ,people ordered from catalogues ,Thus response to the first showroom was overwhelming:people loved being able to see and try the furniture before buying it . This led to increased sales and the company continued to thrive .By 1955, IKEA was designing all its own furniture .In 1956 Kamprad saw a man disassembling a table to make it easier to transport . Kamprad was inspired .The man had given him a great idea :flat packaging . Flat packaging would mean lower shipping costs for IKEA and lower prices for customers .IKEA tried it and sales soared . The problem was that people had to assemble furniture themselves ,but over time ,evem this grew into an advantage for IKEA . Nowadays ,IKEA is often seen as having connotations of self-sufficiency .This image has done wonders for the company ,leading to better sales and continued expansion.Today there are over 200 stores in 32 countries .Amazingly ,Ingvar Kamprad has managed to keep IKEA a privately-help company .In 2004 he was named the world's richest man , He currently lives in Switzerland and is retied from the day-to-day operations of IKEA. IKEA itself , though ,just keeps on growing.

The Paper Chase"Running a house is lot like running a business." says Stephanie Denton, a professional organizer based in Cincinnati, Ohio, who specializes in both residential and commercial paperwork and record keeping. To get a successful grip on organizing documents, bills, and other materials, Denton suggests the following tips:Create a space in which you can always do your paperwork. This is perhaps the most important element of a successful system. If you can't devote an entire desk to the task, at least invest in a rolling file cart to store active paperwork and a two-drawer file cabinet for family records. Store the rolling file cart wherever it is most convenient and comfortable to do your work. whether that is the kitchen, office, or family room. When in doubt, throw it out, the first step to implementing a workable filling system is to eliminate paper you don't use, don't need, or that you could easily access again elsewhere. Throw out duplicate statements, old catalogs, and all of the coupons, mailings, or offerings you'll never have an opportunity to use or even read.4. Set aside two days a month to pay bills, if a monthly due date doesn't fit into your cycle, call up the creditor and suggest a more convenient date, keep two manila folders at thefront of your system for current bills — one to correspond with each bill-paying day — and file all incoming bills. Keep a list in the front of each folder of what needs to be paid in case the invoice never arrives or gets misplaces. Think of your filling system not as a rigid tool, but as a living, breathing system that can accommodate your changing needs. A good filling system is both mentally and physically flexible, everyone's needs are different, says Denton, but when devising a filling system, ask yourself: "Where would I look for this?" Create main headings for your filling system, such as investments, Taxes, Children, and so forth, and file individual folders under the main headings. Never overstuff your files.
