第四十三篇 Can Buildings Be Designed to Resist Terrorist AttackIn the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, structural engineers aretrying hard to solve a question that a month ago would have been completely unthinkable:Canbuilding be designed to withstand catastrophic blasts inflicted by terrorists?Ten days after the terrorist attacks on the twin towers, structural engineers from the Universityat Buffalo and the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER)headquartered at UB traveled to ground zer02 as part of a project funded by the National ScienceFoundation. Visiting the site as part of an MCEER reconnaissance visit, they spent two daysbeginning the task of formulating ideas about how to design such structures and searching for clueson how to do so in buildings t at were damaged, but still are standing3."Our objective in visiting ground zero was to go and look at the buildings surrounding theWorld Trade Center, those buildings that are still standing, but that sustained damage4," said M.Bruneau,Ph. D. " Our immediate hope is that we can develop a better understanding as to why thosebuildings remain standing, while our long-term goal is to see whether earthquake engineeringtechnologies can be married to existing technologies to achieve enhanced performance of buildings6in the event of terrorist attacks. " he added.Photographs taken by the investigators demonstrate in startling detail the monumental damageinflicted on the World Trade Center towers and buildings in the vicinity. One building a block awayfrom the towers remains standing, but was badly damaged. " This building is many meters away.fromthe World Trade Center and yet we see a column there that used to be part of that building",explained A. Whittaker,Ph.D. "The column became a missile that shot across the road, through thewindow and through the floor. "The visit to the area also revealed some surprises, according to the engineers. For example, thefloor framing8 systems in one of the adjacent buildings was quite rugged, allowing floors that werepierced by tons of falling debris to remain intact9. "Highly redundant ductile framing systems mayprovide a simple, but robust strategy for blast resistance. " he added. Other strategies may includeproviding alternate paths for gravity loads in the event .that a load-bearing column fails. "We alsoneed a better understanding of the mechanism of collapse" ,said A. Whittaker. " We need to find outwhat causes a building to collapse and how you can predict it. "A. Reinhom,Ph. D. noted that " earthquake shaking has led to the collapse of many buildings inthe past. It induces dynamic response and extremely high stresses and deformations in structuralcomponents. Solutions developed for earthquake-resistant design may be directly applicable to blastengineering and terrorist-resistant design. Part of our mission now at UB is to transfer these solutionsand to develop new ones where none exist at present. Eat Healthy“Clean your plate!” and “Be a member of theclean-plate club!” Just about every kid in the US has heard this from a parentor grandparent. Often, it’s accompanied by an appeal: ”Just think about thosestarving orphans in Africa!“ Sure, we should be grateful for every bite offood. Unfortunately, many people in the US take too many bites. Instead ofstaying “clean the plate”, perhaps we should save some food for tomorrow.According to news reports, US restaurantsare partly to blame for the growing bellies. A waiter puts a plate of food infront of each customer, with two to four times the amount recommended by thegovernment, according to a USA Today story. Americans traditionally associate quantity with value and mostrestaurants try to give them that. They prefer to have customers complain abouttoo much food rather than too little.Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor atPennsylvania State University, told USA Today that restaurant portion sizesbegan to grow in the 1970s, the same time that the American waistline began toexpand.Health experts have tried to get manyrestaurants to serve smaller portions. Now, apparently, some customers arecalling for this too. The restaurant industry trade magazine QSR reported lastmonth that 57 percent of more than 4,000 people surveyed believe restaurantsserve portions that are too large; 23 percent had no opinion; 20 percentdisagreed. But a closer look at the survey indicates that many Americanswhocan’t afford fine dining still prefer large portions. Seventy percent of thoseearning at least $150,000 per year prefer smaller portions; but only 45 percentof those earning less than $25,000 want smaller. It’s not that working class Americans don’twant to eat healthy. It’s just that, after long hours at low-paying jobs, getting less on their plate hardly seems like a good deal. They live frompaycheck to paycheck, happy to save a little money for next year’s Christmas presents.。

Scientists Develop Ways of Detecting Heart AttackGerman researchers have1a new generation of defibrillators and early-warning software aimed at offering heart patients greater protection2sudden death from cardiac arrest. In Germany alone around100,000people die annually as a result of cardiac arrest and many of these cases3by disruption to the heart’s rhythm. Those most at risk are patients who have 4suffered a heart attack, and for years the use of defibrillators has proved useful in intervening within seconds. These devices6a range of functions, such as that of pacemaker.Heart specialists at Freiburg’s University Clinic have now achieved a breakthrough with an implanted defibrillator7of generating a six-channel electrocardiogram(ECG)within the body. This integrated system allows early diagnosis of8 blood-flow problems and a pending heart attack. It will be implanted in patients for the first time this year.Meanwhile, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Mathematics in Kaiserslautern have developed new computer software that renders of ECG data9.The overwhelming10of patients at risk will not have an implanted defibrillator and must for this reason undergo regular ECGs.“Many of the current programs only11into account a linear correlation of the data.We are, however, making use12a non-linear process that reveals the chaotic patterns of heart beats as an open and complex system,”Hagen Knaf says,“13changes in the heart beats over time can be monitored and individual variations in patients taken intoaccount.”An old study of ECG data,based14600patients who had suffered a subsequent heart attack, enabled the researchers to compare risks and to show15the new software evaluates the data considerably better.1.A)come up B)come up with C)come up to D)come up against2.A)to B)for C)with D)from3.A)are caused B)caused C)are to cause D)have been causing4.A)easily B)readily C)frequently D)already5.A)disease-producing B)health-improvingC)life-threatening D)error-correcting6.A)take in B)take after C)take on D)take from7.A)capable B)able C)skillful D)skilled8.A)chronic B)acute C)recurrent D)persistent9.A)precisely B)more precisely C)precision D)more precise10.A)maximum B)minimum C)majority D)minority11.A)get B)take C)bring D)fetch12.A)of B)with C)for D)in13.A)Similarly B)In this manner C)Otherwise D)In this way14.A)in B)for C)upon D)with15.A)what B)where C)that D)when科学家探索发现心脏病的方法德国研究者们发明了新一代的除颤器和旨在为心脏病人提供更多保护,使他们免遭心脏停止导致的突然死亡的早期预报软件。
