Thankfully, she is blessed with good health.I still remember ten years ago when she turned 80, she surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independent birthday”.One day she informed us she'd booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course, that was ridiculous. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question! She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turned out, she had barely spent any time alone, after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for some days. He took her to all the sites—the markets, churches and restaurants. He introduced her to a blanket seller, “a lovely fellow,” and she bought some blankets. The seller took her address details and promised to ship them to Canada. They would be arriving in three or four weeks. My mother beamed (眉开眼笑) as she told this story. The blanket seller and my mother apparently built a friendship and she told him to drop by if he were ever in Canada. To our great shock, her blankets did arrive some weeks later, along with a lovely note from the seller Mustafa. To our even greater surprise, the following year Mustafa himself arrived in Canada. He called our mother to inform her he was in Ottawa.“I invited him over and he came by for a cup of tea. They drink a lot of tea in Turkey,” my mother told my horrified brother and me.Her trip of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realization that life is to be lived. It reminded me of the line from the movie The Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”4.Why did the author's mother go to Turkey alone?A. To make the author and the brother surprised.B. To celebrate her 80th birthday independently.C. To prepare herself to enter her ninth decade.D. To inform the author that she needed independence.5.Which of the following best describes the mother's trip to Turkey on the whole?A. Colorful.B. Boring.C. Dangerous.D. Challenging.6.What do we know about the blanket seller?A. He is poor but kind-hearted.B. He is outgoing and funny.C. He is rich but selfish.D. He is friendly and reliable.7.What can we learn from the text?A. It's never too old to learn.B. East or West, home is best.C. Life should be well lived.D. Time and tide wait for no man.Billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday announced that he has formed a new artificial intelligence(AI) company, xAI, which has employed researchers from Google, OpenAI and other top technology companies. The goal, Musk tweeted, is “to understand reality.”xAI is a separate company from Musk's other businesses, such as Tesla and Twitter, but will work closely with them, according to the new company's website.mention what projects it will be working on, the company noted that its team of 11 researchers are drawn from top tech companies such as Microsoft Research, OpenAI and Google.Musk suggested that the reason he picked July 12, 2023, to announce the start of xAI is connected with a science fiction(科幻小说) classic, Douglas Adams' “The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.” In his tweet, he noted that adding the date 7-12-23 equals 42, which the work of the fiction famously assumes is the answer to life.“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the xAI website states. The company said it will be advised by Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety. Hendrycks pointed out where AI could cause problems. “AIs could be used by bad people to make new deadly bioweapons(生物武器),” Hendrycks said in May. “Or people could make AI that tries to hurt people on purpose. If this AI was really smart, it could be a big danger to all of us.”The first time xAI was shown to the public was after Musk talked about it in April to the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Musk told Carlson that OpenAI's ChatGPT was a bitbiased(有偏见的) and that he wanted to create a different tool that would be a super honest AI that tries to learn how everything in the world works. The new company reflected(反映) Musk's long-voiced concerns about a future in which AI systems could present a risk to human existence. The idea, Musk said, is that an AI that wants to understand humanity is less likely to destroy it.8.What does the underlined word “novice” in paragraph 3 mean?A. Boss.B. Coach.C. Partner.D. Beginner.9.Why did Musk announce the start of xAI on July 12, 2023?A. He chose the date to remember a friend.B. He was influenced by a number in a book.C. It was suggested by a writer at his invitation.D. It was the decision of all the 11 researchers of xAI.10.What does Hendrycks think of AI?A. It is quite worrying.B. It is money-making.C. It will not be smarter than humans.D. It can be used to punish bad people. 11.What did Musk say to Carlson?A. It will take time to create a new AI.B. OpenAI's ChatGPT has its advantages.C. Creating an honest AI is his dream.D. It is hard to change people's ideas of AI.The story about horses in North America told in several written histories is in need of an update, according to a new study. After examining archaeological(考古学的) remains(遗骸) of horses, researchers suggest Indigenous peoples(土著居民) had spread the animals through the American West by the first half of the 1600s — before they met Europeans. The findings agree with oral (口述的) histories from Indigenous groups, which tell of interactions(相互作用)with horses before settlers arrived in their homelands. Meanwhile, written European texts from the 1700s and 1800s stated that horses only spread through the area after 1680.Horses first appeared in the Americas around four million years ago, but by about 10,000 years ago, they had mostly disappeared from the record. Spanish settlers likely first brought horses back to the Americas in 1519. According to the new study, Indigenous peoples then transported horses north along trade networksTo find when the animals spread, researchers examined the remains of more than twenty horses discovered across the Western U.S. Rather than simply walking around the countryside on their own, the horses appear to have been part of Native American culture. Signs of teeth problems on one horse and growths on the bones of the head of another suggested people had put bridles(马勒) on the animals. Certain chemical elements(化学元素) in the animals' teeth suggested they ate maize, an Indigenous plant. And another horse had a previously broken facial bone that had fully recovered, meaning it might have received medical treatment.Researchers compared the ancient horses' DNA with that of modern horses and found that the centuries-old horses had largely Spanish origins(血统).Together, the findings suggest horses spread "from Spanish settlements in the American Southwest to the northern Rockies and central Great Plains by the first half of the 17th century.”The findings also highlight the importance of Indigenous oral traditions in understanding history. “Our cultures have been so misunderstood for so long,” says co-author Yvette Collin. “Too often history has been told around us, without us.”12.What needs to be updated according to the new study?A. When horses showed up in the Americas.B. Who introduced horses to North America.C. When Native Americans first met Europeans.D. Who spread horses through the American West.13.What did researchers find out about ancient horses from the remains?A. They had hardly any Spanish origins.B. They were born with tooth disease.C. They played a role in natives' life.D. They were badly treated by natives. 14.What does Collin think of oral histories?A. They spread easily.B. They show the truth.C. They pass down traditions.D. They unite Indigenous groups.15.What is the best title for the text?A. Written texts explain human-horse interactionsB. Oral histories help us understand Indigenous culturesC. New research rewrites the history of American horsesD. He even trained his captives so that they would become experienced in living in the jungle and could give him a greater challenge when he hunted them. None of those poor sailors had survived the game. Now Rainsford is on his island, another captive. Zaroff “invites” Rainsford to join his hunting game. Though a great hunter himself, Rainsford is now in a different position because in this game, it is he who has to do everything possible to save his own life. This text gives a detailed description of the battle of wits between Zaroff and Rainsford.
Synopsis
The text is the concluding part of the original story where it comes to a climax. Rainsford is a famous American big-game hunter. To him the world is made up of two classes: the hunters and those who are hunted, and he is glad that he is the hunter. As a hunter he never considers how the one being hunted feels—the fear of pain and of death. One dark night, while sailing, probably near the notorious Bermuda Triangle, Rainsford’s hat was blown off by a gust of wind, and in trying to catch it, he reached out too far and fell overboard. There was nothing he could

He had never, in his entire life, had more than a tot al of one year’s schooling. And books? Lincoln once said he had walked to borrow every book within fifty miles of his home. A fire was usually kept going all night in the small house and he read by the light of it.He walked twenty or thirty miles to hear a speaker and, returning home, he practiced his talks everywhere--in the fields, in the woods, before the crowds. He joined several societies and practiced speaking on the topics of the day.A lack of confidence always troubled him. In the presence of women he was shy and dumb. Even when he was in love with Mary Todd, he used to sit there, nervous and silent, unable to find words, listening while she did the talking. Yet that was the man who, by practice and home study, made himself into the speaker who debated with the famous speaker Douglas! That was the man who,in Gettysburg Address, rose to the heights of eloquence (雄辩)that have seldom been achieved in all the human history.Small wonder that, speaking of his own great barriers and painful struggles, he wrote, “If you are determined to make a lawyer of yourself, the thing is more than half done already.”5、Which of the following statements is True?A. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps makes them feel good and warms their hearts. How would you feel if you could not joke with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friends, or even just someone who you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking with. My grandma always f ound humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌) to speak to others who are around you.I know of a few people who don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don’t get the joke that makes othersspace. How can people not get a really funny joke?Laughing is essential to keeping your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medication to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.8、What is the author’s attitude towards the present world?A. Satisfied.B. Critical.C. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, “It’s a little damp (潮湿的) outside.” Or,if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say. “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Underst atement is often used in an unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humour.Mr Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries round the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.12、Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?A. The British often stick to the facts.B. British jokes are involved with many different cultures.C. British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.D. The British try to make out that something is less important than it is.13、The author explains understatement by_____.A. using examplesB. making comparisonsC. following time orderD. describing a process14、Mr Bean makes people laugh by_____.A. telling funny storiesB. copying others’ behaviorC. making jokes about others’ accentsD. using his body movement and facial expressions15、What can be the best title for the text?A. Reading Comprehension (4 points)Read the passages, then answer the questions that follow. (1 point each )Experiencing Culture ShockA When Eliza James arrived at the University of Xian, she was excited to live in a new country, to improve her Chinese, and to experience a culture so different from her own. But soon her excitement turned tofrustration as she encountered one roadblock after another. "I felt like I couldn't accomplish anything. My dorm room had no heat, I couldn't get into the classes I wanted, and every time I asked someone for help they gave me the runaround. I felt like no one was listening to me." Eliza met with administrators, sent letters of complaint, and even contacted the consulate in Beijing, but she got nowhere. What Eliza didn't realize was that her American approach to solving problems was very different from the Chinese one in which patience and negotiation skills are key. She soon learned how to solve problems within the cultural norms of Chinese society instead of forcing her own values onto those around her. "I finally feel like I fit in and that I know what I'm doing. In fact, it's really fun being in a place that's so incredibly different from what I am accustomed to."B Yoshi Yamamoto is a junior at a small college outside of Boston. Although he is an honors student now, Yoshi didn't always have such an easy time studying in America. "Teaching methods are very different here than they are in Japan. It took me a long time to get used to learning in seminars and discussing ideas with my classmates. At first it seemed like I wasn't actually learning anything." Yoshi's reaction was to totally withdraw: he didn't participate in class discussion; he spent lots of time alone in his room, and he even skipped class on occasion. "I thought I could teach myself. Now I recognize the value of the U.S. academic system, and I am able to adapt it to my own learning style."C Both Eliza and Yoshi experienced what is called culture shock: psychological disorientation due to living in a new culture. For many international students, studying abroad can offer exposure to new cultures and an opportunity to study new fields and languages. However, it also offers the greater challenge of trying to function in a foreign culture. Studying and reading about a certain culture is poor preparation for the reality of living in it. According to psychological studies, the four stages of culture shock are 1. euphoria, 2. hostility, 3. gradual adjustment, and 4. adaptation. Culture shock can be manifested in many ways: homesickness, boredom, stereotyping of or hostility towards the host culture, overeating or overdrinking, withdrawal, and inability to work effectively.D Different people experience different levels of culture shock and react in different ways. For example, Eliza got angry while Yoshi withdrew from society. The most important thing to remember is that culture shock is normal; it is not something to be ashamed of. Luckily, there are some things international students can do to make their adjustment to a new country go more smoothly. For instance, they can stay in touch with family and friends from home, join international student organizations, meet people from their own countries, and get involved in campus activities. Most importantly, they can adjust to life abroad by keeping a sense of humor and trying to remain positive.Recognizing Paragraph Topics(choose the paragraph letter)题目27. an explanation of culture shock选择一项:C. (1 point each) Seasonal Affective Disorder: More than Just the BluesA Joshua dreads the winter months, not only because of the cold New England weather--the sleet, snow, wind, and rain--but because as the seasons change from summer to fall to winter, the days get shorter. As the days get shorter, he starts feeling depressed and irritable and spends more and more time at home, eating and sleeping. A graduate student in philosophy, Joshua finds that he gets little work done during the winter months and has trouble paying attention in class and concentrating on his research. "I soon realized that what I thought was just the 'winter blues' was something more extreme than that." Josh visited a doctor who diagnosed him with SAD.B Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a kind of depression that occurs seasonally. It is associated with the long hours of darkness and lack of sunlight during the winter months (people with SAD usually feel worse from December through February). Scientists don't completely understand the exact causes of SAD, but they believe it is related to a biochemical imbalance in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is the basic part of the brain that controls the body's breathing, heartbeat, metabolism, and hormone release. The effects of SAD include moodiness, irritability, low energy, increased appetite for carbohydrates (foods such as potatoes, rice, and bread), difficulty concentrating, and the tendency to oversleep.C Although doctors described SAD for the first time in 1984, humans have probably dealt with the disorder for thousands of years. It is not a coincidence that many cultures have important celebrations during the short days of the winter months. Christmas, Hanukkah, and Winter Solstice celebrations all occur in December. These celebrations involve lighting candles in order to bring light, warmth, and happiness to an otherwise depressing time of year.D So what can SAD sufferers do to feel better? Naturally, they need more light. For people who have mild cases of SAD, exercising in the morning sun could be enough to help them. Phototherapy, or light therapy, is usually prescribed for people who have more serious cases of the disorder. In light therapy, patients sit in front of a light box, a strong artificial light, for up to four hours a day. Phototherapy is effective in over 80% of SAD cases, and patients usually see results within three to four days. Although the symptoms of SAD are similar to those of clinical depression, traditional antidepressants have not proven useful in treating SAD. While psychological counseling cannot treat the symptoms of SAD, it is recommended to help SAD sufferers learn to accept and deal with their illness. (0.4 points each)题目6changes damaging losing global availableThe growing similarities in diet and eating habits around the world are influencing people of various cultures in different ways. For example, Western foods are 6 damaging health in the industrialized island country of Japan. Instead of small meals of seafood, rice, and vegetables, the typical Japanese diet now includes large amounts of meat, dairy products, and desserts like tiramisu, a rich Italian dish full of chocolate, cheese, and sugar. According to Japanese health researchers, such 7 changes in eating habits are related to a great increase in health problems such as heart disease, strokes, cancer, and diabetes. On the other hand, the changing 8 global diet is having the opposite effect on the people in the CzechRepublic. The government of this European nation no longer supports meat and dairy products financially, so the cost of these foods is going up. In contrast, fresh fruits and vegetables are becoming more widely 9 available from private markets and stands. Cooks are even serving salads to schoolchildren, and families are eating healthier home-cooked meals. For these reasons, fewer Czech men are having heart attacks, the women are 10 losing a lot of weight, and most people are living healthier lives.Chapter 4 Exercise(分值7分I. (1 point each)These days, it’s getting easier and easier to find your way around. Some people have GPS devices in their cars to make sure they don’t get lost. GPS stands for Global Positioning System. These devices use satellites in space to “see” where you are and give you directions to where you want to go. And if you don’t have a GPS device, you can simply go online to get step-by-step directions. Websites like and can produce a map and directions in just a few seconds. But how do they do it? MapQuest® uses data (informatio n) from a few different sources to produce directions and maps. Before MapQuest® went online, it sold regular paper maps in places like gas stations. The website uses the data from those paper maps, information from digital mapping companies, and government databases. At the moment, MapQuest® uses more than 30 computers to read all this data and provides users with millions of maps every day.In order to find the best route (way or path) from one place to another, MapQuest® first has to look at all possible routes. Then MapQuest® looks at each part of each possible route. It considers the types of roads on the different routes. Are they dirt roads, paved roads, freeways, or city streets? It looks at how many turns there are in each route and what kinds of turns they are. Are they right turns or left turns? It also considers the speed limit on each road and how many intersections there are. An intersection is “a place where two or more roads cross each other”.MapQuest® can also tell you how long your trip will take you. It does this by doing some math. MapQuest® bases its estimated driving times on the length and speed limit of each part of the route and the amount of time it probably takes to get through each intersection. For example, it allows more time for a left turn at an intersection than it does for a right turn. Someday, maybe we will have cars that can just drive us wherever we want to go, but for now, mapping websites make it a little harder to get lost.题目26.What is the main idea of this article? C. However, few families now fall into this 6 category In fact, if more women decide to have children on their own, the single-parent household may become more 7typica l than the traditional family in many countries. Also, unmarried couples may decided to have more children—or they might take in foster children or adopt. And because people are staying single and 8 living longer (often as widows), there may be more one-person households in the future. On the other hand, some people 9believe similar events happen again and again in history. If this is true, people may go back to the traditional 10 extended or nuclear family of the past. These happy senior citizens, some of them over the age of 90, claim that the natural fruit juice cures—or at least decreases—the pain of their arthritis, a 6 disease of the joints of the aging body. It’s a folk remedy, not a proven medical therapy. Nevertheless, science is beginning to 7 figure out why sour cherry juice might work to improve the health of patients with arthritis. The secret is in the 8 substance that gives the cherries their dark red color. It belongs to a 9 classification of natural nutrients that color blueberries, strawberries, plums, and other fruits—and vegetables too. Moreover, these coloring substances may help to 10 prevent serious health disorders like heart disease and cancer. Reading Comprehension (5 points)Complete the following sentences by choosing the best from the answers A, B, C, or D. (1 point each)AEveryone makes mistakes, or so the saying goes. But have you ever heard about mistakes in Hollywood? When most people think of Hollywood, they think of blockbusters (very successful movies), high-paid actors, glitz, and glamour. But according to one Website, many Hollywood movies are full of mistakes. Some are technical errors. For instance, in a scene of the science-fiction adventure film The Matrix, when the main character steps out of his car, the viewer can clearly see the camera crew in the car window. In another scene, the same character is typing on his computer, yet the computer screen is blank. Other movie mistakes are historical. For example, the epic Gladiator, an Oscar winner, is known for having lots of historical errors. Throughout the movie, the gladiator Maximus refers to his home in Spain, and the other characters call him "the Spaniard." However, in 180 A.D., when the movie takes place, Spain as a country or even as a concept didn't exist yet. At another point in the movie, Maximus says that his homeland of Spain has "the best horses." But horses weren't brought to the Iberian Peninsula until the invasion of the Moors (North Africans) in 711 A.D, more than 500 years after the movie takes place. The historical drama Titanic, another Oscar winner, also has its share of historical blunders. The Titanic sunk in the year 1912. So why is one of the characters wearing a digital watch? In fact, movie watchers have found over 100 mistakes in The Matrix, Gladiator, and Titanic. Can you think of any errors in your favorite films?BHow susceptible are you to advertising? Has a TV commercial or magazine ad ever made you buy the product that was advertised? If so, perhaps you have been subjected to subliminal advertising. Subliminal advertising is a kind of advertising that appeals to the subconscious. The word "subliminal" comes from the Latin "sub" meaning "lower," "beneath," or "under," and "limen" meaning "threshold," (the level at which something begins to happen). Thus, subliminal advertising stimulates your brain at a level below conscious perception. You。

The Most Dangerous Gameby Richard Connell最危险的游戏文章赏析【写在前面】《最危险的游戏》(The Most Dangerous Game)是美国著名短篇小说家理查德·康奈尔(Richard Connell)的代表作,曾在1924年获得欧·亨利短篇小说奖,也是众多英语教材的常用文章。
General," said Rainsford firmly, "I wish to leave this island at once." (表现了Rainsford急于离岛的心情)The general raised his eyebrows; he seemed hurt. "But, my dear fellow," the general protested, "you've only just come. You've had no hunting--"【翻译】“将军,我想马上离开这个岛。
”Rainsford
There were a lot of eyebrows raised at the news of the financial minister’s dismissal.
It never hurts to ask.
3.Protest
补充:Protest that申明Protest against 抗议Under protest 不情愿,被迫的"I wish to go today," said Rainsford. He saw the dead black eyes of the general on him, studying him. General Zaroff's face suddenly brightened.(表达了将军心理的变化,他下定决心一定要留下Rainsford并且对自己很有信心)"Tonight," said the general, "we will hunt--you and I."Rainsford shook his head. "No, general," he said. "I will not hunt."【翻译】“我今天就要离开”Rainsford说。
His face was a study.
Brighten upHe brighten up a bit.
It is undeniable that the economic picture is brightening.
The general shrugged his shoulders and delicately. "As you wish, my friend," he said. "The choice rests entirely with you. But may I not venture to suggest that you will find my idea of sport more interesting than Ivan's?"He nodded toward the corner to where the giant stood, scowling, his thick arms crossed on his hogshead of chest.【翻译】将军不以为然的耸了耸肩,语气微妙地说,“随你的便,我的朋友,这完全取决于。
She was physically delicate and psychologically unstable.
Delicate/Fine balance
The European members are afraid of upsetting the delicate balance of political interests.3.Rest with/upon取决于,责任在于补充:Depends on/opon取决于Hinge on 取决于Does not success or failure hinge on this? He was accused of having no sense of humor, of not being a good sport.
His shoes sported elevated heels.
He was accused of having no sense of humor, of not being a good sport.
He was drinking his double whiskey too fast and scowling.
Chris met the remark with a scowl.
7.Hogshead 啤酒桶Hogshead of chest 宽厚的胸膛(大啤酒桶一般的)"You don't mean--" cried Rainsford."My dear fellow," said the general, "have I not told you I always mean what I say about hunting? This is really an inspiration." The general raised his glass, but Rainsford sat staring at him."You'll find this game worth playing," the general said enthusiastically." Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess!(棋在西方文化中有很高的文化意义,用在这里形容将军和Rainsford之间的竞争非常贴切)And the stake is not without value, eh?"(这里的表达方式体现了将军的残酷)【翻译】“你不会是认真的吧…”Rainsford惊呼道。
