How can you help kids cope with stress? Proper rest and goodnutrition can improve coping skills, so can good parenting. Make time foryour kids each day. Whether they need to talk with you or just be in thesame room with you, make yourself available.Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after a tiring day of work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day—especially if they’ve had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in your kids shows that they’ re important to you.Help your child deal with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up with a few solutions. For example, he should cut back on after-school activities, spending more time talking with his parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal. You can also help by predicting potentially stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For example, let a child know ahead of time, but not too far ahead of time, that a doctor’s appointment is coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably won’t need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress.Remember that some level of stress is normal. Let kids know that it’s OK to feel angry, scared, lonely or anxious and that other people share those feelings, too. When kids can’t or won’t discuss these problems, try talking about y our own concerns. This shows that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with when they’re ready. If a child shows symptoms that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor (顾问)or other mental health experts. Most pa rents have the skills to cope with their children’s stress. The time to seek professional attention is when any change in behavior continues to exist, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behavior is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home.【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文, 讲述的是如何帮助孩子处理压力的事情。

必修4 Unit 4 Body language李仕才一、阅读理解AThe biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called the Scrubba Wash Bag, that worry may be a thine of the past. The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag's design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light. Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage with his invention —dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Bag solves that problem. In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What's even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time. The best part is that the 99dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it's not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Bag, wandering through foreign cities, searching for a laundry, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了Scrubba Wash Bag的产生背景和功能。

Dictionary cautions against confusing it with hugge—another word of the Middle English ug,meaning “to inspire w ith fear or disgust”.Nevertheless,I find myself drawn to the possibility that hug does,in fact, have some connection with ug.It seems to me that at the thought of a tight embrace (拥抱),fear and disgust do come to mind.So why is it that when I go over to your house for dinner, you wrap your arms around me,even though I saw you last Friday at the movies? One arm or two?Should there be space between us?Should I brush my cheek against yours?Maybe even kiss your cheek?I’m willing to believe that some people really love to hug. They rush to enfold not only family and friends but also friends of friends and near strangers. They delight in applying pressure and rocking from side to side.Yet most people are just going through the motions;they’re looking for a way to say hello or goodbye. Not wanting to seem rude,I open my arms, too, submitting to the ceremony of friendship. After one particularly confusing interaction,I looked for advice from experts.Emily Yoffe,an advice columnist, offered her sympathy:“I’m with you on this, but I’ve become a nonhugger who hugs.Recently after breakfast with a new friend,I went in to hug her goodbye, and I could see a kind of horror in her eyes, but it was too late to back off.” That’s me:The girl with the look of horror in her eyes. The Emily Post Institute, which specializes in manners, explains that when greeting someone, you should look him or her in the eyes and smile, speak clearly, add a “glad to see you” and then shake hands with a firm grip, pump two or three times, and then release. The institute suggests adding a hug “if it’s a relative or close friend”.Not any specific information on what a proper hug involves. There are several hug alternatives, among them:the handshake, the cheek kiss, the wave, the arm squeeze, and the nod.Handshakes seem formal, cheek kisses unAmerican.Arm squeezing would be a good solution if it were not for the danger of getting pulled into something more fullbodied. The nod, though, can be very effective when combined with a smile, especially when executed with confidence and with one hand already grasping the door handle.1.What do the first two paragraphs indicate about “hug”?A.The word causes common disfavor.B.The behavior appears disgusting.C.The action is somewhat confusing.D.The manner is unsuitable for friends.2.About the way of embrace, the experts________.A.have a standard conceptB.feel embarrassed and uneasyC.advise people to use other waysD.fail to give an explicit definition3.What’s the author’s attitude towards hug?A.Cautious. B.Hesitant.C.Puzzled. D.Opposed.4.What does the passage mainly discuss?A.Indepth research into hug.B.Specialized opinions on daily manners.C.Appropriateness of daily manners.D.Important reform of greeting manners.Ⅵ.书面表达假如你是李华,对2019年一月出现的严重雾霾记忆犹新,认为绿色生活方式对于改善空气质量十分有益。

Your house may have an effect on your figure . Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off . You can make your environment work for you instead of against you . Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites . In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room . Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.Don’t forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass thana tall, skinny glass.1.The text is especially helpful for those who care about_______.A. their home comfortsB. their body shapeC. house buyingD. healthy diets2.A home environment in blue can help people_________.A. digest food betterB. reduce food intakeC. burn more caloriesD. regain their appetites3.What are people advised to do at mealtimes?A. Eat quickly.B. Play fast music.C. Use smaller spoons.D. Turn down the lights.4.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Is Your House Making You Fat?B. Ways of Serving DinnerC. Effects of Self-ConsciousnessD.Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?【文章大意】此篇文章是一篇饮食与健康有关的话题。

必修4 Unit 4 Body language李仕才一、阅读理解AFacing increasing pressure to raise students' scores on standardized tests, schools are urging kids to work harder by offering them obvious encouragements. Happy Meals are at the low end of the scale. With the help of businesses, schools are also giving away cars, iPods, seats to basketball games, and —in a growing number of cases — cold, hard cash. The appeal of such programs is obvious, but the consequences of tying grades to goods are still uncertain. It's been a common tradition in middleclass families to reward top grades with cash as a way to teach that success in school leads to success in life. But for many disadvantaged minority children, the longterm benefits of getting an education are not so clear, according to experts. No one knows for sure how well cash and other bigticket rewards work in education in the long run. But there are plenty of concerns that this kind of practice could have negative effects on kids. Virginia Shiller, a clinical psychologist, says that it's worth experimenting with cash encouragements but that tying them to success on a test is not a worthwhile goal. “I'd rather see rewards based on effort and responsibility — things that will lead to success in life,” she says.Even if rewards don't lead to individual achievement on a test, they could have a meaningful effect in the school. Charles McVean, a businessman and philanthropist (慈善家), started a tuto ring program which pays higherachieving students $10 an hour to tutor struggling classmates and divides them into teams. During the course of the year, students bond and compete. The team posting the highest math scores wins the top cash prize of $100. McVean calls the combination of peer (同龄人) tutoring, competition, and cash encouragements a recipe for “nothing less than magic”.For its part, the Seminole County Public Schools system in Florida plans to continue its report card encouragement program through the rest of the school year. The local McDonald's restaurants help the poor district by paying the $1,600 cost of printing the report card. Regina Klaers, the district spokeswoman, says mostparents don't seem bothered by the Happy Meals rewar ds. “There are many ways we try to urge students to do well, and sometimes it's through the stomach, and sometimes it's the probability of students winning a car,” she says. “One size doesn't fit all.”【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文,主要论述了物质奖励对学生的成绩是否有促进作用。

All of the books are standout reads, according to the billionaire, most of which are focused on business and economy. Here are Bill's top four picks (with parts of his full review of each book).Business Adventures, by John BrooksBrooks' collection was published in 1969 and remains one of Gates' favorites. He reread it again this year, labeling it the best business book he has ever read.“Shortly after we met, Warren Buffett lent me this collection of business articles from The New Yorker from the 1950s and 1960s. I loved them as much as he did. Brooks' insights (洞察力) into business have aged beautifully, and they are as true today as ever.”Capital in the TwentyFirst Century, by Thomas PikettyPiketty's novel hit the shelves in August 2013 and sparked much discussion concerning income inequality throughout this year. Gates also got to sit down with Piketty himself after reading the nonfiction work to discuss the topic.“As I told him, although I have concerns about some of his secondary points and policy prescriptions, I agree with his most important conclusions: inequality is a growing problem and governments should play a role in reducing it.”How Asia Works, by Joe StudwellStudwell's work, which was published in May 2014, addresses how countries such as Japan, South Korea and China have continued to achieve high growth, and why other countries have failed to do the same.“The agriculture section of the book was particularly insightful. It providedample food for thought for me as well as the whole Agriculture team at our foundation. And it left us thinking about whether parts of the Asian model can apply in Africa.”Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization, by Vaclav SmilSmil's books are a constant favorite of the Microsoft's founder — one of his books makes Gates' list almost every year. Making the Modern World came out late in 2013 and explores the global use of materials, from silicon to wood and plastic.“If anyone tries to tell you we're using fewer materials, send him this book. With his usual skepticism and his love of data, Smil shows how our ability to make things with fewer materials — say, soda cans that need less aluminum — makes them cheaper, which actually encourages more production.”语篇解读:本文介绍了比尔·盖茨喜欢阅读的四本关于商业和经济的书。
