US people have a custom to give money to waiters and waitresses as a tip for their work. But why is this? Shouldn't waiters get paid enough by their bosses? Well, many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage(最低工资) and work for tips to make up for that. According to the American travel website TripAdvisor, some states pay their servers(服务员) only $2. 13(about 14 yuan )per hour. While no one makes you tip, if you are at a sit-down restaurant, it is usually expected that you tip your waiter 15 to 20 percent of what your bill is.It's not just for waiters either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips. But it is much more expected to tip waiters. The US hasn’’t always had this tipping culture. In fact, people were mostly against it until the The US hasnProhibition Era(禁酒令时代) in the1920s. The government said no one could sell alcohol (酒). Then, restaurants had trouble making enough money. So, they started to ask people to tip theirwaiters. This tipping culture has lasted through the years, but most people don’t like it. Some thinkrestaurant bosses use it as an excuse to not pay their workers well. There isn't much action beingtaken to make a change yet.So, for now,be sure to tip your waiter when in the US.1. What causes waves? Most waves are caused by winds blowing over the surface of the water. The sun heats the earth, causing the air to rise and the winds to blow. The winds blow across the sea, pushing little waves into bigger and bigger ones. The size of a wave is decided by how strong the wind is, how long it blows, and how large the body of water is.In a small bay, big waves will never build up. But at sea the wind can build up big, powerful waves. It is believed that the height of a wave(in meters )will usually be no more than one-tenth of the wind's speed(in kilometers ). In other words, when the wind is blowing at 120 kilometers an hour, most waves will be 12 meters high or less. Of course, some waves may come together to form big waves that are much higher.1. What are huge waves greatly harmful to?_________________________2. What cause most waves?_______________________3. Why are there winds?__________________________4.

Most parents always think that they have offered the best things they can to make their children live in a comfortable world. They buy their children pretty clothes, strange but expensive school things, and always a thousand-yuan-cost bike. They think that they have done everything they can to their dear little children. In return, they only want their children to give them good results in the examinations. But why can their children still not understand them? Does it mean that they still want more material things? No. As a matter of fact, what they want is a true family. What does a true family mean?I think it means a place where we can hide ourselves from the outside cold world. From here, we can get warmth, we can get consolation(安慰), and we can get happiness. And one important thing is that we should be stronger and more confident in the outside world because we know that we have a family. So I think that parents should sit down to talk with their children to let them know that they have a true family, so the child and his parents could understand each other more and more.1. What do parents expect all of us to do when they give us so much?(不超过15词)2. What does a true family mean?(不超过15词)3. A forest fire that burned 55 square kilometers was finally brought under control on Wednesday morning. The fire started on Sunday in Black Bear State Park and quickly spread to nearby areas.
On Monday, police evacuated(疏散) the small town of Lawson and ordered the people to leave their homes. The fire destroyed 20 homes in the area and caused heavy damage to 40 others.
Nobody was hurt. Officials said the damage to homes and cars was between $l million and $2 million. The government declared (宣布) the town a disaster (灾难) area. The fire spread quickly in the hot, dry weather. Fire fighting was difficult because of strong winds. Firemen from 55 fire departments in the state joined the National Fire Service to put out the fire. Some kept fighting for 24 hours. Fire engines and helicopters(直升飞机)dropped water onto the fire. In order to control the fire, firemen cleared a way around the fire.
Police closed King Road to traffic on Tuesday because of heavy smoke. Thousands of tourists had to drive an hour north to Queen Road to pass the fire area.
Some people did not follow the police order. Paul Grayson sent his wife and two children to safety, but he stayed. As the fire came within 50 feet of his house, he started thinking, “Am I foolish? Did I stay here too long, just for a house?”

You speak, write a letter, or make a telephone . Your words carry a message. People communicate (交流) with words. But do you know people also communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears (眼泪) in your eyes tell others that you are sad.
When you put up your hands in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake (摇) your head and people know you are saying "No". You nod(点头) and people know you are saying "Yes". Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the door tells you where to go in or out. Have you ever thought that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time? People can communicate in many other ways. An artist(艺术家) can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains , the blue seas and many other things. Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV, radio and films all help us communicate with others.
