ACar washes are a common sight throughout Nigeria, but Madinat Aliyu’s roadside business is special: she is the only woman car-washer in the north of the country.“This job has caused me a lot of problems.” said the 27-year-old, checking cars waiting to be cleaned.Aliyu began her work two years ago, hoping to use the 7,000 naira(about £28) she earned every month to put her younger sisters and brothers through school following the death of their mother, the only one who made money to support the family. But her family begged her to stop doing this job, and she has received “judgment and warnings” from strangers too.“My grandmother cried for many days. Some people thought it was a joke to bring more customers. Others said if I was doing it for money, they would just give me money to stop bringing them shame,” she said to me, as she got water from a well by the roadside. “But I hate laziness and depending on somebody else.”Little by little, Aliyu got admirers. “Some customers only allow her to wash their cars,” said her colleague Shamsudeen Mohammed. “I trained many green hands to wash cars, and I can honestly tell you Aliyu’s work is better than any man’s.” he added.Recently some women came to Aliyu to ask for advice on starting their own business. “Unfortunately a woman’s family discouraged her. I told her, if you listen to them, you will find yourself living a life you don’t want,” she said. Though she is still looked down upon by many, Aliyu has no plans to stop her work. “It is believed men can do something, but I believe I can do it too.”21. As a woman car-washer, Aliyu ______.A. enjoys her family’s supportB. dreams of going to collegeC. is popular with new customersD. sets an example for other women24. Which of the following can best describe Aliyu?A. Shy but smart.B. Independent and confident.C. Honest but lazy.D. Humorous and imaginative.BWhen Lily Grasso recently brought home a letter from her school, her mother, Kristen Grasso, got angry. The letter claimed that Lily’s body mass index(BMI) was 22 and she was at risk for being overweight. The 11-year-old star volleyball player carries 124 pounds on an athletic 5-foot-3 frame and eats healthy foods. “It says ‘at risk’, and then it tells you to go to their website; when you do that, the ‘at risk’then turns into ‘Lily is overweight’.”Grasso said on TODAY. She believes her daughter enjoys a healthy weight and that the Florida Department of Public Health in Collier County made a mistake by sending what’s known by some as a “fat letter” home with her daughter. She thinks that children might feel bad by being labeled as overweight, especially when they are healthy. But Deb Millsap, public information officer of the Collier Country Healthy Department, and Dr. Joan Colfer, the department director, told TODAY that while the letters are sent home with the students, they are in sealed envelops addressed to the parents. Students can’t open the letters, or that means they are reading their parent s’ mail. The letter included the student s’ BMI and information on their vision and hearing as well as whether they are at risk for scoliosis(脊椎侧凸), with data coming from a regular screening process that occurs when students are in kindergarten, the first, the third, and the sixth grades. Florida is one of the 21 states that have laws requiring BMI screenings. Millsap said the healthdepartment was currently in the middle of screenings for this school year, and last year the department tested 13,454 children. About 25 percent had possible vision issues, less than 1 percent had possible hearing problems, about 2 percent had scoliosis, and 43 percent had BMI issues, either above or below normal numbers. Parents can give up the screening for their children, but Millsap and Colfer said 99% of the parents wouldn’t do.“We do not want kids to have self-esteem(自尊) issues,” said Millsap. “Right on the letter it says sports may impact the results.” Athletic children and adults might have a higher BMI because they have more muscle mass. BMI provides general information for doctors to work with, but does not provide an entire picture of a person’s health.25. When Kristen Grasso received the “fat letter”, she _____.A. was worried a lot about her daughter’s healthB. got annoyed and disagreed with the conclusionC. feared that too much sport hurt her daughterD. felt angry because her daughter made mistakes26. What kind of sports does Lily Grasso take part in?A. Soccer.B. Basketball.C. Tennis.D. Volleyball.27. About the “fat letter”, Deb Millsap held that ______.A. it would greatly hurt students’ self-prideB. it shouldn’t be taken home by studentsC. students shouldn’t read it without permissionD. it was wrong for the health department to do it28. We can know from the passage that ______.A. BMI includes information on vision, hearing and scoliosisB. students will have four screenings before the 7th GradeC. half the states of America have carried out the regular screening processD. about a quarter of American pupils have possible vision issuesCChildren are known to be very keen observers and once they are interested in something, it is very likely to stay with them for life. They tend to look at life through the eyes of the person they are close to or want to be like. If their role model is optimistic, there are more chances of themoptimistic. The role model becomes their standard of measurement.Because they follow the actions of their role models so closely, children adopt the personality and attitude of their role models. Children learn to like or dislike certain things by mimicking the personality and attitude of the people they admire. One reason why children keep changing their answers to “what would you like to be when you grow up” is that they are influenced by individuals in a certain field.Children view the social relationships (family or public) mainly in the light of the importance these relationships hold in the life of their role models. Their expression of their feelings is many times a reflection of their role model’s outlook(观点).According to a study, around 56% of teenagers identified with the role models. Out of these, those having personal or direct contact with their role models had higher self-esteem and were better at academics compared to those who didn’t. As such, children who have positive role models, have more self-confidence and are more optimistic about their future. They learn to handle themselves well in social settings and positively interact with those around them.Of course, children who have their parents as positive role models have a well-rounded outlook towards life. They find it easier to deal with the highs and lows of life because they have seen their parents do it before. They find a sense of stability and security knowing that they will overcome failures just like their parents before them. Besides, it becomes easier for parents to discipline(管教) and guide children. So it is no wonder why children who have parents as their role models have fewer behavioral issues.29. This article is mainly about______.A. the relation between role models and childrenB. the importance of role models to childrenC. how to be a good role model for childrenD. how to change children’s personality and attitude30. The underlined word “mimicking” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ______.A. imitatingB. acceptingC. studyingD. changing31. According to the study, after direct contact with their role models, ______.A. there is a decrease in children’s self-esteemB. there are fewer children better at academicsC. children may feel more optimistic about their futureD. children may have a strong desire to succeed32. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that______A. children’s behavioral issues are seriousB. teaching children strategies for security is importantC. people should learn the latest studies on role modelsD. parents should set a good example for childrenDWealth starts with a goal saving a dollar at a time. Call it the piggy bank strategy. There are lessons in that time-honored coin-saving container.Any huge task seems easier when reduced to baby steps. If you wished to climb a 12,000-foot mountain, and could do it a day at a time, you would only have to climb 33 feet daily to reach the top in a year. If you want to take a really nice trip in 10 years for a special occasion, to collect the $15,000 cost, you have to save $3.93 a day. If you drop that into a piggy bank and then once a year put $1,434 in a savings account at 1% interest rate after-tax, you will have your trip money. When I was a child, my parents gave me a piggy bank to teach me that, if I wanted something, I should save money to buy it. We associate piggy banks with children, but in many countries, the little containers are also popular with adults. Europeans see a piggy bank as a sign of good fortune and wealth. Around the world, many believe a gift of a piggy bank on New Year’s Day brings good luck and financial success. Ah, but you have to put something in it.Why is a pig used as a symbol of saving? Why not an elephant bank, which is bigger and holds more coins? In the Middle Ages, before modern banking and credit instruments, people saved money at home, a few coins at a time dropped into a jar or dish. Potters(制陶工) made these inexpensive containers from an orange-colored clay(黏土) called “pygg,” and folks saved coins in pygg jars. The Middle English word for pig was “pigge”. While the Saxons p ronounced pygg, referring to the clay, as “pug”, eventually the two words changed into the same pronunciation, sounding the “i” as in pig or piggy. As the word became less associated with the orange clay and more with the animal, a clever potter fashioned a pygg jar in the shape of a pig, delighting children and adults. The piggy bank was born.Originally you had to break the bank to get to the money, bringing in a sense of seriousnessinto savings. While piggy banks teach children the wisdom of saving, adults often need to relearn childhood lessons. Think about the things in life that require large amounts of money--- college education, weddings, cars, medical care, starting a business, buying a home, and fun stuff like great trips. So when you have money, take off the top 10%, put it aside, save and invest wisely.33. What is the piggy bank strategy?A. Paying 1% income tax at a time.B. Setting a goal before making a travel plan.C. Aiming high even when doing small things.D. Putting aside a little money regularly for future use.34. Why did the writer’s parents give him a piggy bank as a gift?A. To delight him with the latest fashion.B. To encourage him to climb mountains.C. To help him form the habit of saving.D. To teach him English pronunciation.35. The last paragraph talks about ________.A. the seriousness of educating childrenB. the importance of managing moneyC. the enjoyment of taking a great tripD. the difficulty of starting a business第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

You can feel how heavy the ball is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music. All children soon learn what “Don't touch! ”means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy, such as food, clothes and so on. To see something well, we have to touch it.The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a bad floor. All feel different under your feet. There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them! Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things which you can touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show. If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Fill in the numbered blanks by using theinformation from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.Acting is voluntarily entering the psyche(心灵) of another personality and thinking according to a different set of values. It lets you explore the various possibilities of what you could be. Just being your own self can be boring at times but acting gives you an opportunity to be someone else for a while. It lets you deeply explore what it means to be human! To play a role, you must embrace(接受) the character you're acting with open arms. Understand the plot of the play and the psyche of your character. Try to understand why your character behaves the way it does. Learn the lines or dialogues thoroughly and explore the thought behind every sentence. This will help you picture the circumstances in which the character finds itself. To be that person, there is no way you can live the life he or she has, but you can draw parallels from your own life, which will help you relate to the person. You have to draw parallels from your own experience and actually try to feel what the character feels. Say the lines only when you "feel" the way your character does. Let them come out naturally.Only through practice will you get closer to actually be that person, and many acting exercises can help you. Try saying the dialogue giving the correct facial expressions in front of a mirror. Learn the techniques of raising as well as lowering your voice. Practice acting out the expressions like joy, sorrow, laughter, anger, disapproval, satisfaction etc. These facial expressions, if mastered well, can make your acting experience happy. In short, your experience off stage and the awareness with which you live your life are the keys to unlock your acting potential. Confidence, sincerity and the ability to let go of yourself will turn into a great acting performance!Title: How to actI. 71. ___________________of acting●exploring the various possibilities of what you could be●avoiding 72. _____________ by being someone else for a while●exploring the 73. ______________ of being humanII. Adults frequently told me that carrots would improve my eyesight, so that seemed like a good reason to try liking them. There was one person who didn’t tell me this; he actually told me the opposite. My grandfather overheard somebody tell me that carrots would improve my eyesight. He didn’t say anything immediately, but he let me in on a l ittle secret after that person left the room—it was all a big lie. Carrots do not improve your eyesightSure, carrots contain beta-carotene, which metabolizes into Vitamin A and everyone agrees that is essential for maintaining eye health, but it does not improve it (unless the body is deprived of it to begin with). Also, it really has nothing to do with carrots, the necessary vitamins can come from any source. So where did this myth come from?During World War I, the British were particularly good at shooting down Nazi bombers at night, when it’s almost impossible to see other planes. It was as if they had super-human sight, and they did. They had radar.Once news stories started to circulate about these pilots with seemingly super-human eyes, the government needed a good explanation to prevent the Germans from learning about this technology: carrots.Flight Lieutenant John Cunningham, nicknamed “Cats Eyes” for his incredible ability to shoot down enemy planes, had a natural love for carrots. The story wrote itself and they explained that they were feeding other pilots a lot of carrots to improve their eyesight too.81.What function do people usually think the carrot has? Some do it just for fun. Others compete.Climbing takes strength, control and good balance. Climbers have to pull themselves straight up the face of very high rocks or walls. So they have to be strong enough to carry their own weight. And climbers sometimes have to hold onto rocks by only their fingers or toes. There are several kinds of rock climbing. Traditional rock climbing is done outside. Climbers wear ropes and tie equipment to the rocks as they climb many hundreds of meters up. They also connect their ropes to the equipment. If a climber slips, a rope can stop him from falling.Sport climbing is similar. However, in it the protective equipment is placed in the rock all the time. There is also indoor climbing. Rock walls made of wood have places for the climber’s hands and feet.Ice climbing is exactly as it sounds. People climb glaciers or frozen waterfalls instead of rocks. They use special equipment for the ice.And then there is bouldering-climbing rocks (巨石攀岩) between three and seven meters high. It is quicker and stronger climbing. Many climbers like bouldering because they can use less equipment. Climbers often need only special shoes and chalk (防滑粉). All climbers use chalk to keep their hands dry. Most rocks have cracks and holes and parts that stick out. Climbers use these for foot-holds and handholds. Climbers use their legs to climb. They try not to pull themselves up with their hands or arms. Arms and hands are for position and balance.People almost always climb in groups of two or more. Climbing alone is very dangerous. Expert rock climbers say only the very best in the sport should do it.56. To gather data for my paper, I started visiting patients at Dr Sardjito Hospital, where I would review the medical records of patients and then interview them. One evening, I was in a ward(病房), desperately “hunting” for the final three patients I needed to complete my study. Holding a patient questionnaire, I walked towards a room. A patient called Ms A was lying in bed, clearly still weak. There were no relatives or friends with her. Even the bed beside her was empty. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and in a low voice I introduced myself and asked if I could gather some additional information from her. She agreed. After I finished, I prepared to leave. Before I could stand up, Ms A said, “ I haven’t seen you here before, doctor. Are you new?” “Not really, Madam. It’s just that I don’t come here every day,” I replied. Ms A started talking about herself. She shared her difficulties and sufferings, talked about her husband, who was killed in a car accident, and that she struggled to earn money. All I did was nod my head as a way of showing my sympathy.Without realizing it, I had begun holding Ms A’s hand. Finally, Ms A stopped talking. “I’m very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problem, but I feel relieved now. I had no one to pour out my problems to.” Tears fell from the corner of her eyes. Finally, I knew what to say. “It’s OK, Madam. It’s part of my duty.”I stood up and waved goodbye. A few days later, when I returned to the ward, I discovered Ms A had left the hospital as her condition had improved.Ms A taught me the most important lessons a doctor can learn. Sometimes patients do not need expensive medicine. They just need someone with the patience and willingness to lend an ear and spare a little of their time.61. Why did the author interview the patients at Dr Sardjito Hospital?A. Because it was the duty as a medical student.B. Because she needed medical information for her paper.C. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. When I was younger, I thought that boys and grown men should not cry.The tears were signs of being weak and a sissy(胆小鬼), which a man isnot supposed to be. This was even strengthened in my young mind when thesong, Boys Don't Cry, came out in the early 1980s.But just this June, I discovered that courage is not all about tryingto keep all the pain inside in check. Courage is not all about trying to hide the tears. It is the opposite —the tears strengthen the heart's courage. And I saw thisin my father. That day my father cried. My 18-year-old sister eloped (私奔) and from it I saw how weak my father's heart was. My sister and I were used to seeing him as an iron-willed figure and authoritarian father. For three days after my sister eloped, he would not talk. He would just sit quietly outside our house in the dark. On the fourth night, I sat beside him and asked him to tell me what he felt about everything. It has been years since I have laid my hand on my father's shoulder as we have drifted apart (疏远) farther and farther while I was growing up. That night, though, I sensed my father trying to control his pain and I wanted him to be able to let it out. We have all cried over what happened except him. All of us except him.The simple touch and my words, “Dad, it is not your fault.” broke my father's dam. In the darkness, he began to cry. I felt his shoulders shaking as he whispered, "Where did I go wrong? All I ever wanted was for my children to grow up right. Why couldn't your sister wait?"I understood then why he preferred to be in the dark. By being there, he hoped to spare his family of a father's pain. His tears, though we did not see them before that night, were there all the same. I saw his courage, that night when my father cried with my hand on his shoulder, and understood his pain.66. The Tile, a small square linked up to your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth, lets you see how close youare to the missing item, within a 50-to 150-foot range. If the item goes out of your phone’s 150-foot range, it can still be detected (发现) on other smartphones with the same app. When you log into the app on your phone, it shows you, with green bars that increase or decrease, how far away you are from the Tile. You can also program it to make a sound when you get close to the Tile. And you can link up your phone with up to ten Tiles. And if your lost item —a dog, for example, or a stolen bike —goes out ofyour own phone’s 150-foot Bluetooth range, youcan set it as a “lost item”. If any of the phones with the Tile app comes within the range of your lost item, a message will be sent to your own phone, reminding you of its position. The Tile app also has the function to remember where it last saw your Tile, so that you can easily find where you left it.Since the Tiles use Bluetooth rather than GPS, they never run out of battery or need to be charged, and they last for one year before needing to be replaced. The app, which will come into the market this winter, works with iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPad Mini, iPad 3rd and 4th generation, and iPod 5th generation.29.
