During his whole life, Mark Twain carried on many kinds of jobs. From 1864, he became a reporter and travelled in Europe. By the end of his life in 1910, he had become known as the perfect example of American author. Behind the mask of humour and satire, his writing often criticized social morals, politics and human nature, making his literature a unique reflection of the American experience in the latter part of thenineteenth century. In the 1890s Mark Twain became very poor. To recover from the bankruptcy, he started a world lecture tour, during which one of his daughters died. The death of his wife and his second daughter darkened his later years.Mark Twain died on April 21, 1910.Time line of the events1835- Haley's Comet welcomed the birth of Samuel Langhorn Clemens. Huck Finn is drawn from life; Tom Sawyer also, but not from an individual —he is a combination of the three boys whom I knew. Although my book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls, I hope it will not be shocked by men and women, for part of my plan has been to try to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves, and of how they felt and thought and talked, and what strange adventures they sometimes took part in.The Adventures of Tom SawyerThis edition presents Twain's classic American novel in an unabridged text with a reader's guide that's suitable for both children and adults. Mark Twain's classic novel, The Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn, tells the story of a teenaged misfit who finds himself floating on a raft down the Mississippi River with an escaping slave, Jim. In the course of their perilous journey, Huck and Jim meet adventure, danger, and a cast of characters who are sometimes menacing and often hilarious. Though some of the situations in Huckleberry Finn are funny in themselves (the cockeyed Shakespeare production in Chapter 21 leaps instantly to mind), this book's humor is found mostly in Huck's unique worldview and his way of expressing himself. Describing his brief sojourn with the Widow Douglas after she adopts him, Huck says: "After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take any stock in dead people." Underlying Twain's good humor is a dark subcurrent of Antebellum cruelty and injustice that makes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a frequently funny book with a serious message. His quotation: "Love your enemy, it will scare the hell out of them.”“The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man that cannot read them.”“Always tell the truth; then you don’t have to remember anything.”Humor has been well defined as thinking in fun while feelingin earnest.”幽默被人正确地解释为“以诚挚表达感受,寓深思于嬉笑”。

3 With these words ringing in their ears, Allied soldiers prepared for what would become known as D-Day. At dawn on 6 June, thousands landed by parachute behind enemy lines in northern France. Meanwhile, thousands more were journeying across the English Channel to Normandy, protected by fighter planes in the skies above them. Their objective was clear: to reach the Normandy beaches along about 80 kilometres of French coastline. But even in the depths of war, few could have been prepared for the violence and horror they would experience there.

If the sun were to rise in the west, I would change my mind.Ⅲ.阅读理解Most of us line up a large number of times during our lives. Think about it. Banks. Restaurants. Doctors. Waiting lines are such a thorn in our sides at popular destinations (目的地) — Disney World, the Empire State Building — that many of us are willing to pay to avoid lines.Culture has much to do with how we handle waiting lines. The British are the best people in the world at waiting in lines. I've never seen a people less concerned with lines than the British. If you've been to Wimbledon you know what I mean. There are no online ticket salesfor this fortnight of tennis. You queue up for hours, often a halfday or more with 8,000 others on a golf course near the stadium, suffering whatever rain, wind or sun.It is an unwritten but ever present rule at Wimbledon that you never talk about or even admit that the queue exists. You'll hear and participate in every conversation imaginable while waiting. It's not really possible to jump or breakin a queue at Wimbledon because of the stewards and the timedated stamps they hand out, but it's considered bad behavior anywhere by the British. Some places such as restaurants in Canada and in the States are getting wise. The host or hostess greets you, and says almost apologetically (道歉地). “Sorry, but it will be about 45 minutes!” Almost always you'll be seated in just 20 to 30 minutes. It's called managing expectations. But, now you're very happy as if you had something to do with getting a table earlier. Finally, technology promises to save some queuing time. In the years ahead, stores will adopt Apple's methods, with every salesperson capable of taking payments. Then the lines will disappear. With age, perhaps, comes wisdom. I do whatever I can to avoid activities where queues are quite common. But you can't always avoid lines, so I make the best of them.I usually start conversations with total strangers in a queue ... at the very least you open yourself up to an opportunity for an engaging conversation. Queues, like life, have a lot to do with attitudes.A.Lining up makes us hurt.B.We have to pay to avoid lines.C.We spend most of our life queuing.D.Waiting lines are unavoidable in our life.解析:选A 细节理解题。
由第一段可知,受欢迎的景点的长队让人很痛苦,以至于我们宁愿花钱去避免排队。
2.While queuing in Wimbledon, .A.you will be fined if you break inB.everybody is used to waiting longC.people prove the existence of queuesD.the waiting time depends on the weather解析:选B 推理判断题。
由第二段和第四段“It is an unwritten but ever present ruleat Wimbledon that you never talk about or even admit that the queue exists”可知,在Wimbledon,甚至人们都看不到“队伍”的存在,这里的人们都已经习惯了排队等候。
3.What does the underlined part “managing expectations” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A.Reducing waiting times at queue lines.B.Having high expectations for customers.C.Trying to live up to customers' expectations.D.Letting customers wait shorter than they expected.解析:选D 词义猜测题。
由第五段可知,在加拿大和美国的一些餐馆,服务生会告诉人们一个比实际等待时间要长的时间,这样顾客会早于他们期待的时间落座,这被称为“管理期待”。
4.What is the author's attitude towards lines?A.Annoyed. B.Unclear.C.Positive. D.Indifferent.解析:选C 观点态度题。
由最后一段可知,作者学着用智慧来解决排队问题,即使躲避不过,也会很好地利用“排队等候时间”。
故作者对排队持有积极的态度。
Ⅳ.阅读七选五When you are at odds with someone close to you, the OneMinute Drill can show you how to express your feelings effectively and how to listen more skillfully. 1 Set aside at least ten minutes, and then sit facing each other.Decide who willbe the Talker and who will be the Listener. It makes no difference, because later you will change roles. For approximately 30 seconds, the Talker can say anything he or she wants.Your job will be to express your thoughts and feelings. You can discuss problems you've had. 2 When the Talker finishes, the Listener will summarize what the Talker just said, as well as how the Talker was feeling inside, as accurately as possible. The Talker now gives the Listener a grade between 0 and 100 percent to indicate how accurate the summary was. 3 The new Talker can continue with the same topicor move on to something entirely new. However, if the grade is below 95 percent, the Talker should point out what the Listener missed or got wrong, and repeat the process until the overall rating is 95 percent or more. 4The first time you attempt the OneMinute Drill, you may get a low score. 5 Onceyou've tried this exercise a few times, you'll find that you can nearly always get ratings of 95 percent or better on the first or second try.A.Don't worry, because you'll get up to speed quickly.B.If the rating is 95 percent or more, you can change roles.C.Remember to limit yourself to about 30 seconds.D.Thirty seconds of emotionally charged information is sufficiently challengingfor anyone.E.All it requires is two individuals who are committed to improving their relationship.F.If you like, take a few notes, but don't interrupt him or her.G.Then you can change roles and repeat the exercise for as long as you both like.2.选C 本选项呼应本段首句中的“30 seconds”。
