The Importance of ReadingReading is a fundamental skill that opens doors to knowledge, imagination, and personal growth. It is not just a pastime but a vital activity that enriches our lives in numerous ways.Firstly, reading expands our knowledge. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, every book offers new information and perspectives. Through reading, we can travel to distant lands, learn about different cultures, and explore various subjects without leaving our homes. Moreover, reading enhances our vocabulary and language skills. As we encounter new words and phrases, our ability to express ourselves improves. This is particularly beneficial for students and professionals who need to communicate effectively in their academic or work environments.Reading also stimulates our imagination. When we read a story, our mind creates vivid images of the characters and scenes described. This creative exercise keeps our brain active and helps develop our ability to think creatively in other aspects of life.Furthermore, reading is an excellent stress-reliever. It allows us to escape from our daily worries and immerse ourselves in a different world. Many people find that reading before bed helps them relax and sleep better. In the digital age, where we are constantly bombarded with quick information and short attention spans, the importance of reading books cannot be overstated. It teaches us to focus, analyze, and think critically about complex ideas.Reading is not just a hobby but a crucial activity for personal development. It broadens our horizons, improves our communication skills, fuels our imagination, and provides a much-needed respite from the fast-paced world. Therefore, we should make an effort to incorporate regular reading into our daily lives.。

Children Must be Taught to Tell Right from WrongWilliam KilpatrickMany of today’s young people have a difficult time seeing any moral dimension (道德层面) to their actions. There are a number of reasons why that’s true, but none more prominent than a failed system of education that eschews (回避) teaching children the traditional moral values that bind Americans together as a society and a culture. That failed approach, called “decision-making,” was introduced in schools 25 years ago. It tells children to deci de for themselves what is right and what is wrong. It replaced “character education.” Character education didn’t ask children to reinvent the moral wheel (重新发明早已存在的道德标准); instead, it encouraged them to practice habits of courage, justice and self-control.In the 1940s, when a character education approach prevailed, teachers worried about students’ chewing gum; today they worry about robbery and rape.Decision-making curriculums pose thorny ethical dilemmas to students, leaving them with the impression that all morality is problematic and that all questions of right and wrong are in dispute. Youngsters are forced to question values and virtues they’ve never acquired in the first place or upon which they have only a tenuous (薄弱的) hold. The assumption behind this method is that students will arrive at good moral conclusions if only they are given the chance. But the actual result is moral confusion. For example, a recent national study of 1,700 sixth- to ninth-graders revealed that a majority of boys considered rape to be acceptable under certain conditions. Astoundingly, many of the girls agreed. This kind of moral illiteracy is further encouraged by values-education programs that are little more than courses in self-esteem. These programs are based on the questionable assumption that a child who feels good about himself or herself won’t want to do anything wrong. But it is just as reasonable to make an opposite assumption: namely, that a child who has uncritical self-regard wil l conclude that he or she can’t do anything bad.Such naive self-acceptance results in large part from the non-directive, non-judgmental (无是非观的), as-long-as-you-feel-comfortable-with-your-choices mentality that has pervaded (渗透) public education for the last two and one-half decades. Many of today’s drug education, sex education and values-education courses are based on the same 1960s philosophy that helped fuel the explosion in teen drug use and sexual activity in the first place.Meanwhile, while educator s are still fiddling with outdated “feel-good” approaches, New York, Washington, and Los Angeles are burning. Youngsters are leaving school believing that matters of right and wrong are always merely subjective. If you pass a stranger on the street and decide to murder him because you need money—if it feels right—you go with that feeling. Clearly, murder is not taught in our schools, but such a conclusion—just about any conclusion—can be reached and justified using the decision-making method. It is time to consign (寄出) the fads (风尚) of “decision-making” and “non-judgmentalism” to the ash heap of failed policies, and return to a proved method. Character education provides a much more realistic approach to moral formation. It is built on an understanding that we learn morality not by debating it but by practicing it.。
什么是Writing Sample

Writing PracticeUnit 7, B.2Have a look at the sample cause-and-effect paragraph based on the outline below.Topic: Driven out of a storeCause:· wearing casual clothes that hadn't been ironed· going to an upper-scale storeEffect:· drawing prejudice· children's staring and laughing· adults' doubtful looks· clerks' following track· refused to use bathroom· lack of trustSample paragraph:The worst experience I have ever had was the day a friend and I were driven out of a store. One day my friend and I went downtown to shop. We were wearing casual clothes that hadn't been ironed and went to one of the large upper-scale stores. Our down-scale clothing immediately drew prejudice. Some of the children we encountered stared, pointed, and laughed; adults gave us long, doubtful looks. Clerks in stores followed our tracks to watch our every move. And they even refused to let us use the bathroom. Both of us felt that there was no room for us and that the lack of trust and rude stares virtually drove us out of the store.XIV. Write a paragraph on one of the following topics showing a cause-and-effect relation. One topic has been given a detailed outline that you can follow.Topic: My friend has become a workaholic.Cause:· strong desire to prove himself· aim to do everything by himself· unwilling to spend time with his family and friendsEffect: becoming a workaholicMore topics:· The traffic in the city is getting worse.· Xiao Wang has been depressed recently.Your Writing:Sample Writing:My friend Jack has become a workaholic. He has too strong a desire to prove himself. According to him, good enough is never good enough. While others want only to finish a few things, he aims to do everything by himself. Also, he is unwilling to spend time with his family or friends, playing with the dog, or going fishing. He would feel guilty if he did so, because he believes that all his time should be spent working. He even wishes that he could have a day of 26 hours or even more. He has become a workaholic whether he likes it or not.Uint 1, B. 3Have a look at the outline below and the sample composition that has been written in the problem-response-evaluation structure.Topic: The population explosion of urban areasProblem:· slums· regular failures of electric and water services· extensive unemployment, etc.Response:· improving the facilities in rural areas· attracting more people to live in rural areasEvaluation: The problem might be solved if rural areas were to have all the facilities of urban areas.Sample CompositionThe population explosion of urban areas has given rise to a lot of problems such as sprawling slums and regular failures of electric and water services because of the excessive demands. In addition, the urban areas suffer extensive unemployment and strained educational and recreational facilities. The population explosion of urban areas must be corrected. One of the ways to correct the population explosion of urban areas is to improve the facilities in rural areas. Adequate parking facilities, attractive and well-stocked department and food stores, drug stores, gift shops and bakeries should be built in rural areas to convince more people living there to stay where they are. The government should offer lower tax rates and modest homes on convenient terms to those who choose to live in the rural areas. If rural areas were built to have all the facilities that urban areas do, the population explosion in urban areas can be corrected.XV. Write a composition of no less than 120 words with a problem-response-evaluation structure on one of the following topics. As a result, people have started to move out of the area. In response to the problem, the local government has decided to fight against air pollution. It has closed down several factories, which were considered to be the major cause of the pollution. There are many reasons that can contribute to eating disorders. One of the main reasons seems to be that boys and girls want to be thin and pretty like the models they see on television and in magazines. Any mention from parents or peers about weight or appearance can lead to the onset of an eating disorder. Abuse, whether it be physical or emotional, can also contribute to an eating disorder. Such abuse can leave them with a lack of trust and low self-esteem. In addition, an unfavorable relationship with others is also a contributing factor to disordered eating habits.XV. Write a composition of no less than 120 words on one of the following topics starting with a result or an effect followed by causes. One topic has been given a detailed outline that you can follow.Topic: The performance of Chinese and American students in their studiesEffect: Chinese students are doing far better than American students in their studies.Causes:· Chinese students' strong belief in hard work· Chinese students' strong duty to their familiesSample Writing:It is reported that Chinese students are doing far better than American students in their studies. What are the reasons? That Chinese have strong belief in hard work is the first of the two main factors contributing to Chinese students' outstanding performance. Chinese students believe that through hard work and effort, people can perfect themselves and gain a better future for themselves. And they have also set higher standards for themselves. The second factor is that Chinese students have a strong duty to their families. They work hard not just for themselves but for the honor of their families. They have a high sense of responsibility. They believe that they do not deserve the support of their parents unless they do well in their studies. The two important factors are the major causes why Chinese students do so well in their studies.Unit 3, B.3Have a look at the outline below and the sample composition that has been written in the structure of a general statement supported by an example.General statement: There is a relationship between earthquake occurrences and animals’ strange behavior.Example:● the earthquake in Haicheng in 1975● chickens and pigeons not entering their cages● cattle not eating; dogs barking● rats running out from hiding places● catfish coming out of their ponds● horses acting wild around their fieldsSample Writing:Earthquakes and Animals’ BehaviorDr. Smith argues in his recent article that there is a relationship between earthquake occurrences and animals’ unusual, often strange behavior before such events. To prove his point of view he uses the earthquake in Haicheng, China in 1975 as a specific example. According to the report, many local people had observed strange animal behavior before the earthquake. Chickens and pigeons would not enter their cages; cattle would not eat; dogs barked in chorus all over the town; rats ran out from their hiding places and marched fearlessly through houses; catfish leaped out of their ponds; and horses ran wildly around their fields. He concludes in his article that observing animal behavior is one of the reliable ways to predict an earthquake.XV. Write a composition of no less than 120 words on one of the following topics which starts with a general statement supported by an example. One topic has been given a detailed outline that you can follow.General statement:There are serious security problems in Brooklyn, New York.Example:● Marissa Parry, on her way home in the evening● walking through the parking lot toward the entrance of her apartment;● a man attacking her● no one coming to help● Miss Parry lying dead a few feet away from her apartmentSample Writing:There are serious security problems in Brooklyn, New York. As might be expected, it is clear from the data that sedentary pursuits are far more popular nowadays than active ones.Of the 10,000 children that were interviewed, all the boys and girls stated that they enjoyed watching TV or videos in their spare time. In addition, the second most popular activity, attracting 80% of boys and 60% of girls, was playing electronic or computer games. While girls rated activities such as art and craft highly – just under 60% stated that they enjoyed these in their spare time – only 35% of boys opted for creative pastimes. Bike riding, on the other hand, was almost as popular as electronic games amongst boys and, perhaps surprisingly, almost 60%of girls said that they enjoyed this too. Skateboarding was relatively less popular amongst both boys and girls, although it still attracted 35% of boys and 25% of girls.(157 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The diagram below shows how a central heating system in a house works.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.model answer:This diagram provides an overview of a domestic central heating system. It shows how the tank, boiler and pipes ensure a constant flow of hot waterto both the radiators and the taps. The cold water enters the house and is stored in a water storage tank in the roof. From there üflows down to the boiler, located on the ground floor of the house. The boiler, which is fuelled by gas or oil, heats up the water as it passes through it. The hot water is then pumped round the house through a system of pipes and flows into the radiators, located in different rooms. The water circulates through the radiators, which have small tubes inside them to help distribute the heat, and this warms each of the rooms. Some of the water is directed to the taps to provide hot water for the house.Once the water has been through the pipes and radiators, it is returned to the boiler to be re-heated and circulated round the house again.Introduction: First sentence. The internal factors are team spirit, competent boss, respect from colleagues and job satisfaction. The external factors are chance for personal development, job security, promotional prospects and money. On the internal factors above 50% in both age groups agreed that team spirit, competent boss and job satisfaction are essential to make their environment pleasant. Whereas on the external factors, there are contrasting results. On the chance for personal development and promotional aspects, 80% to 90% of the younger groups were in favor while only less than 50% of the older group thought so. A similar pattern is also noted on job security. With regards to money, 69% to 70% on both age group said it is essential. In conclusion, the internal factors have similar responses from the two age groups while they had dissimilar responses on the external factors.(170 words)This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 7 score. Here is the examiner's comment:The information contained in the bar chart has been described accurately and concisely and follows a clear progression. There is a clear introduction followed by effective comparisons between the age groups and a valid conclusion. Good formulaic phrases (the bar chart indicates, these factors are divided), although the candidate uses the same language to describe the factors in the bar chart and does not attempt to rephrase them in any way.You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The graph below compares the number of visits to two new music sites on the web.Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. You should write at least 150 words.model answer:The graph shows people using new music places on the Internet in fifteen days period of time namely personal choice and trendy pop music. The overall trend shows fluctuation with slight Increased towards the end of the period.Starting with Music Choice websites; 40,000 poeple went on this new site on first-day. Half of them backed out the next day. In Contrast to this Pop Parade net sites were visited by 120,000 music lovers on day one which decreased slightly on the next day thereafter regaining the same fame on 3rd day. After 3rd day the enthusiasm for both music lines on Internet dropped slowly- reaching maximum fall of 40,000 on 7th day. Whereas Music choice gained popularity, slightly Improoving to get the original strength of 30,000 viewers on screen, but was getting still less visiters than their opponent Pop group i.e. 40,000 on day 7.In the biegining of the next week both gained remarkable recovery after a few fluctuations for8th and 9th day having 40,000 and 50,000 visiters respectively, reaching to their peaks of one and a half thousand new viewers for Pop Parade on 11th day showing a contrast of very few people visiting Music choice for the same day. Thereafter Music choice gained popularity on12th day for having more than 120,000 new visiters on web.In the end of the period Pop sites were visited by maximum viewers of 180,000 whereas sites located to Music choice were not explored by more than 80,000 explorers on the last day of the report.(257 words)This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 6 score. Here is the examiner's comment:Well organized with some good linking devices and collocations (gain popularity, remarkable recovery, decrease slightly) and some valid comparison of the music sites. However, some sentences are long and confusing (paragraph 5), some collocations are inaccurate (slight increased, reaching to their peaks) and there is some repetition (7th day, 3rd day, 11 th day). Some words are spelt incorrectly (poeple, Improoving, visiters, biegining). You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows the proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia in 1999.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.model answer:The table gives a breakdown of the different type of family who were living in poverty in Australia in 1999.On average, 11% of all households, comprising almost two million people, were in this position. However, those consisting of only one parent or a single adult had almost doubt this proportion of poor people, with 21% and 19% respectively.Couples generally tended to be better off, with lower poverty levels for couples without children (7%) than those with children (12%). It is noticeable that for both types of household with children, a higher than average proportion were living in poverty at this time.Older people were generally less likely to be poor, though once again the trend favoured eldery couples (only 4%) rather than single eldery people (6%).Overall the table suggests that households of single adults and those with children were more likely to be living in poverty than those consisting of couples.(154 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The charts below show the percentage of their food budget the average family spent on restaurant meals in different years. The graph shows the number of meals eaten in fast food restaurants and sit-down restaurants. You should write at least 150 words.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.model answer:Over the past 30 years, the average family has dramatically increased the number of meals that they eat at restaurants. The percentage of the family's food budget spent on restaurant mealssteadily climbed. Just 10 percent of the food budget was spent on restaurant meals in 1970, and 15 percent in 1980. That percentage more than doubled in 1990, to 35 percent, and rose again in 2000 to 50 percent.Where families eat their restaurant meals also changed during that 30-year period. In 1970, families ate the same number of meals at fast food and sit-down restaurants. In 1980, fam¬ilies ate slightly more frequently at sit-down restaurants. However, since 1990, fast food restaurants serve more meals to the families than do the sit-down restaurants. Most of the restaurant meals from 2000 were eaten at fast food restaurants. If this pattern continues, eventually the number of meals that families eat at fast food restaurants could double the number of meals they eat at sit-down restaurants.(164 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows the sales at a small restaurant in a downtown business district. For this reason, some universities insist that all students must complete a Work Experience Requirement. Completing the following six stages results in the requirements’ fulfillment. The process begins with the Application stage. A student reviews an approved list of workplaces and submits applications to places where he would like to work. Next is the Approval stage. When a student receives an acceptance letter, he gives it to the professor for approval. The third stage, Schedule, requires a student to arrange his work schedule. The student should work at least 10 hours/week over 20 weeks. Reports are next. The student must complete a Weekly Report Form and turn it in to the professor every Friday. The fifth stage, Evaluation, takes place during the final work week. A student participates in an evaluation meeting with his work supervisor, who submits an Evaluation Form. The last stage requires that a student submit a Final Report before the last week of spring semester.By following these stages and subsequently submitting the final report, the student receives credit from the university.(192 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.In June 1996, an experimental flu vaccine was trialled in a large country town on females only.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.model answer:The diagrams show data for a flu epidemic which hit a large country town in 1996. Figure 1 gives the number of persons who died; Figure 2 shows the percentage breakdown of females who received a new flu vaccine; and Figure 3 gives the number of cases of flu before and during the epidemic. In Figure 1 it can be seen that the flu was responsible for the deaths of 2 females but no males in the period from March to May. However, from June to August, there were 4 female deaths and 1male death.According to the pie chart in Figure 2, only those females most at risk were given the new flu vaccine; 28% did not take part in the trial. Of those females who took part, 35% were aged (over 65 years old); 24% were babies or children; and 13% were either hospitalised or receiving other medical attention. From Figure 3 it is clear that the new vaccine had a positive effect on the number of new cases of flu reported in females. There were just over 1000 cases reported in March, climbing rapidly to a peak of 3500 in June. Thereafter, the number of cases dropped slowly to about 2800 in August, before levelling off at 2500 for the rest of the year. For males, the figures were lower but showed a similar trend throughout the epidemic.(232 words)The charts below show the main reasons for study among students of different age groups and the amount of support they received from employers.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.∙You should write at least 150 words.∙You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.model answer:The first graph shows that there is a gradual decrease in study for career reasons with age. Nearly 80% of students under 26 years, study for their career. This percentage gradually declines by 10-20% every decade. Only 40% of 40-49yr olds and 18% of over 49yr olds studing for career reasons in late adulthood.Conversely, the first graph also shows that study stemming from interest increases with age. There are only 10% of under 26yr olds studing out of interest. The percentage increases slowly till the beginning of the fourth decade, and increases dramatically in late adulthood. Nearly same number of 40-49yr olds study for career and interest. However 70% of over49yr olds study for interest in comparison to 18% studing for career reasons in that age group. The second graph shows that employer support is maximum (approximately 60%) for the under 26yr students. It drops rapidly to 32% up to the third decade of life, and then increses in late adulthood up to about 44%. It is unclear whether employer support is only for career-focused study, but the highest level is for those students who mainly study for career purposes. This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 8 score. Here is the examiner's comment:This answer summarises the key features of both charts and integrates them well. Clear trends are identified and supported with appropriately-selected figures. The answer could only be improved by adding an introduction to the general topic of the charts. The information is well organised, with a clearly-signalled progression.
