文化异同影响英语作文Title: The Influence of Cultural Differences on English Composition。

Culture plays a pivotal role in shaping language, and English, as a global language, is greatly influenced by diverse cultural backgrounds. In this essay, we willexplore how cultural differences impact English composition.First and foremost, cultural nuances significantly influence language expression. Different cultures have distinct values, beliefs, and customs, which manifest in language use. For instance, the directness of communication varies across cultures. In some cultures, such as American and British, directness is valued, leading tostraightforward and concise language in compositions. However, in cultures where indirect communication is preferred, such as in many Asian countries, English compositions may employ more nuanced and indirect languageto convey messages. Moreover, cultural perspectives shape the content and themes of English compositions. Literature, folklore, and historical events unique to each culture provide rich sources of inspiration for writers. For example, an English composition written by a Chinese student may draw upon Chinese legends or historical figures, offering a different perspective compared to compositions by students from Western cultures. These cultural references not only enrich the content but also reflect the writer's cultural identity.Furthermore, cultural differences influence thestructure and organization of English compositions. Each culture has its own rhetorical conventions and writing styles. For instance, Western academic writing oftenfollows a linear structure with a clear thesis statement, followed by supporting arguments and a conclusion. In contrast, Eastern cultures may employ a more circular or thematic approach, interweaving ideas throughout the composition. These differences in organization reflect underlying cultural norms and thought patterns.Additionally, language proficiency levels may be influenced by cultural factors. Cultural attitudes towards language learning, education, and literacy vary, impacting individuals' language acquisition and writing skills. For example, in cultures where education is highly valued and literacy rates are high, individuals may have greater proficiency in English composition compared to those from cultures with lower literacy rates.Furthermore, cultural differences in communicationstyles may affect collaboration and peer feedback inEnglish composition. In cultures where group harmony is prioritized, individuals may be more hesitant to critique their peers' work directly, leading to less candid feedback. On the other hand, in cultures that value open communication and constructive criticism, peer feedback sessions may be more robust and beneficial for improving writing skills. In conclusion, cultural differences have a profound influence on English composition. From language expression and content to structure and collaboration, culturalnuances shape the way English is written and interpreted. Understanding and embracing these cultural differences not only enriches the diversity of English compositions but also fosters cross-cultural communication and understanding in a globalized world.。

It is the invisible hand that shapes our values, beliefs, and behaviors, often without us even realizing it. Cultural differences, therefore, can have profound impacts on the way we live, think, and interact with the world. At the core of cultural differences lies the contrastin values and beliefs. Each culture has its unique set of values that guide its members in their daily lives. For instance, some cultures emphasize the importance of collective harmony and group identity, while others value individualism and self-expression. These contrasting values lead to differences in how people approach problems, make decisions, and interact with others. For example, in a collectivist culture, decision-making often involves consensus and group discussion, while in an individualistic culture, individuals may prefer to make decisions independently.Communication styles are also significantly influenced by cultural differences. Language, being the primary toolof communication, reflects the unique cultural norms and values of a society. The use of words, tone, and body language can vary widely across cultures. These norms shape our social behaviors and interactions, making it essential to understand and respect them when engaging with people from different cultures.Additionally, cultural differences play a significant role in shaping our identity and sense of belonging. Culture provides us with a sense of who we are, where we come from, and what we value. It shapes our self-perception and our understanding of the world. When we encounter people from different cultures, we have the opportunity to broaden our horizons, gain new perspectives, and develop a more inclusive understanding of the world. However, the impact of cultural differences is not always positive. They can also create challenges and conflicts, especially in a globalized world where people from different cultures interact on a daily basis. Misunderstandings, biases, and discrimination can arise due to cultural differences, leading to conflicts and even social division. It is, therefore, crucial to cultivate cultural awareness and respect for diversity to overcome these challenges and promote harmonious coexistence. In conclusion, cultural differences have profound impacts on our lives, shaping our values, beliefs, communication styles, social norms, and sense of identity. The Influence of Cultural Differences on the Translation of A Dream of Red MansionsAbstract:It can be divided into two approaches to culture involved in translation: SL culture-oriented and Tl culture-oriented. This kind of classification is based on the analysis of translation of figurative use of language in the two English versions ( Xianyi Yang& Gladys Yang and David Hawkes) of the Chinese classical novel A Dream of Red Mansion. The analysis leads to the conclusion that both methods can be justified in their own right if we take into consideration the differences in the objective of translation, the form of the texts, the purpose of the author and the readers.Key words: cultural shock; influence; translation of A Dream of Red Mansions摘要:在翻译中,我们一般将对文化因素的处理方式分为两种情况:包括主要以源语文化委归宿的“异化”和主要以目的语文化为归宿的“归化”。

The same words or expressions may not mean the same thing to the people with different cultures. Because of cultural differences, a serious question may cause laughter; a harmless statement may cause displeasure or anger. Therefore the teaching of culture in the English classroom has been becoming a heated topic and people pay more and more attention to the cultural studies and intercultural communication in recent years.Teaching culture in learning English help students raise the cultural awareness and develop the communicative ability .In order to communicate with foreigners correctly, language learners have to know the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures. Then ,culture dictates every stage of the communication process . We communicate the way we do because we are raised in a particular culture and learn its language , rules and norms .Chapter2 Influence of cultural differences between China and the western countries on English learningRelationship between language and culture are inseparable. If you really want to master the communication tool—English and have skillful language communication ability, you must have a knowledge of the cultural differences between China and the western countries. Nowadays, it‟s very important for English learners to know very well the culture.Because of cultural differences , learners may misunderstand the meaning that exists in intercultural communication. The same words or expressions may not mean the same thing to the people with different cultures. Because of cultural differences, a serious question may cause laughter; a harmless statement may cause displeasure or anger. Because of cultural differences, jokes by a foreign speaker may be received with silence. Yet the same stories in the speaker‟s own country would leave audiences holding their sides with laughter. Therefore the teaching of culture in the English classroom has been becoming a heated topic and people pay more and more attention to the cultural studies and intercultural communication in recent years. And then I show some examples for you .2.1 English learning about folk custom differenceIn China, since thousands of years of traditional culture and thought, people attached great importance to family relationship. People can‟t call the old people‟s name directly. Each family has a name. However, in English, brothers, sisters, table cousins, table hall and sisters are as simple as brother, sister, cousin.2.2 English learning about the way of greetingIn China, we have many different kinds of way on greeting. The most common is “did you eat?” “Where you go?” In fact, we are not interested in these answers. They are merely a way of greeting. In western countries, people dislike these issues and feel strange. The way they greet each other often involves talking about the weather. For example, “Nice day, isn‟t it?” “Yes, marvelous.” They do not have to show their feelings or talk about their private affairs.2.3 English learning about expression of modestModest is a traditional Chinese virtue. They respect their elders and superiors. They don'twant to express themselves so much. However, westerners would accept it. For example, In China, some people praise you that “You speak English very well.” The reply is always “not well, just so-so”. However, foreigners‟ reply is “Thank You.”2.4 English learning about receiving giftsWhen Chinese people receive gifts, they will not open it at once. It seems not impolite. While foreigners receive gifts, they will open it at once and express their gratitude to guests. They often say “Oh, how nice, thank you.” “Oh, I like it, thank you.” and so on.2.5 English learning about thanksGenerally, Chinese rarely use “Thank you”. If use it, pe ople will feel strange and divide us. But foreigners use “Thank you” in almost all occasions between all people. This is the minimum level of courtesy. When someone asks, “would you like something to eat / drink?” Chinese often say,“Don't bother”. The foreigners will say “Yes,please.” or “No,thanks.”2.6 English learning about privacyChinese ask about the age, marriage and income to show their concern when they first meet. But English speaking countries have this more disgusted because these are personal privacy. As in JEFC Book 1Lesson 16, there is such a dialogue, “How old are you, Mrs Read?” “It‟s a secret!” Why Mrs Read refused to tell her age? Because English speaking countries people hope to seem to be full of go and youth in each other‟s eyes, so t hey keep their actual age secret. Further more, it is not welcome that Chinese say “where are you going?”, “what are you doing?” to show their concern. Because in English, it will be a prying judge.Chapter 3 cultural differences between Chinese and western from the superstitious taboos Superstition phenomenon and a country's cultural background, religious belief are closely connected, it represents the cultural characteristics of a country's people and religion characteristics. People in different countries, those who believe in superstition is not the same time, an item for a country who represents luck, but on another country who could represent the unlucky. The superstitious taboos of every nation is out of cultural roots, it‟s very good for English learners to understand a country's superstitious taboo and the history of a nation. Thus ,when we communicate with foreigners we could show respect to each other and not to misunderstand. This article will show some the analysis of typical superstition taboo .3.1 The number superstition tabooLanguage is the carrier of culture . Because number is the important part of language, it also has accumulated a rich cultural information . In the ancient tradition, number has not only holy meaning , but also religious superstition. However , different nations have their own preferences for the choice of digital , and most of these choices are according to the national culture . As everyone knows, the number 13 is definitely a bad luck, not lucky numbers in West . For example, in western countries, you could n‟t see the number 13 on their family address .In the national lottery, never printed number 13. Whether domestic or international flights, aircraft seats don‟t have 13th rows In the cinema, there is no 13 ranked No. 13. Many skyscrapers, residential buildings, apartment building floors are from the twelfth layer to jump to the fourteenth floor, no 13 layer. If you really want to sell out 13 position, only to change it to "12-B" or 12 and a half. However , the fear of 13 the number has affected their daily life, in the 13 day is absolutely not by car, not by plane, because they think the disaster on that day go out probably. If the 13 day just is Friday, that would be a terrible day, people fear the day when a catastrophic event. In many Western countries , there is often no 13th floor in the hotel and residential buildings . Thirteen has been considered an unlucky number for centuries . Additionally , the number 666 has a connection to the devil . Well ,the Chinese are superstitious about a few numbers as well .The number 4 is an unlucky number in Chinese. The word four is a homonym for the noun “death” or the verb “to die ” .2 Therefore ,some Chinese prefer not to live at places that have a number 4 in the address . One of my good local Shanghaiese friends , while house hunting , did n‟t even want to go inside to look at the beautiful garden of a house that had a number 4 in the street address . She explained to me that her husband would rather live in a house numbered 13 than one numbered 4 . By the same token , numbers like 14 and 44 are also inauspicious and avoided . Some hotels in China now don‟t even have a 44th floor because many Chinese guests would not want to stay on it .3 The number 8 , on the other hand, is a very lucky number . It sounds like the word …getting rich ‟in Chinese , especially in Cantonese . Therefore , business love to have the number 8 in any part of their address or phone number . They believe that the usage of the number 8 will actually bring them good luck and prosperity . In fact , people will spend more money to buy phone numbers and license plates that contain 8. So if you see a license plate that has the number 8 for all its numerals , you can be sure the person is a businessman who spent a fortune fo it! Similarly , a real estate property with an 8 in its address will be in greater demand .43.2 The wedding related superstition tabooMarriage is the most important stage apart from the birth and death in our life .Therefore, the wedding relates various customs and superstitions and taboos in the West ,it also has their own characteristics. For Chinese, red is the color of auspiciousness or good fortune . Thus Chinese people almost in all the festive occasion wear in red as possible as they can. In the wedding, the bride is dressed in a red qipao ,or long form - fitting grown . The groom wears a big red sash with a bow over his long black gown .5(Nowadays , many brides and grooms also wear white weeding gowns and tuxedos like in the West , but they will always have a traditional Chinese red costume to change into after ) Wherever possible, all in red, indicates that everything is booming. The wedding guests are also possible to wear red, gift to wrap with red. If in the wedding appeared white or black, it will be considered extremely unlucky, black and white will only appear in the Chinese funeral. While in the western wedding, wear white wedding is a symbol of purity and virginity, it has become the standard of the wedding ceremony clothing color.White is the most fashionable clothing color in the formal occasions In the west, redrepresents the bloodshed, revolutionary and terrorist . It is considered unlucky when someone dresses in red in the weeding . In Chinese wedding, everything is new, means to start a new life. In a western wedding, the bride who must have four things: one is new, old, borrowed and blue . New, refers to the bride wears a white gown, a symbol of the beginning of a new life; old, bride's veil must be mother used old yarn, to not forget the kindness of parents, but also a symbol of a happy life like their parents‟happy life ; borrow, refers to the bride must borrow a white handkerchief from her girlfriend , it means don‟t forget the friendship; blue, refer to the bride wear a blue ribbon, a symbol of her loyalty to love. According to this , the bride has good luck forever .In Chinese, relatives and friends send gifts to the couple should be cautious, because some things can not be sent, like an umbrella, a handkerchief, scissors. These cannot give the bride.Because the "umbrella" homophonic "san",its meaning is discrete or separation, it‟s no doubt a big taboo for Chinese who pursuit to be forever . The function of handkerchief is to wipe tears . So it‟s easy to make people associate cry . However ,cry is not a good sign for the bride , she has a bad luck in the following days . In the western weeding , the cake at first is used to throw at the bride , not for her eat , it means have many babies in the future . Of course, with the development of the times and Chinese the pace of reform and opening up, many people have gradually accepted the western culture . In the modern wedding China, more fashionable is the combination of Chinese and Western wedding, the bride wears a white wedding dress has become a fashion, and a vast number of Chinese accepted this kind of weeding.3.3the superstitious taboo of the daily suppliesEveryday we all contact daily supplies more or less . In western countries, daily necessities also have superstitious taboos. We selected several representative to analyze. Mirror : there is one superstition . It is to break the mirror will have 7 years of bad luck, this argument is not only for religious reasons, but also for economic reasons. Umbrella: opening an umbrella indoors. It‟s known to all westerners that open an umbrella in doors meaning unfortunately . The metal umbrella is very hard to open in 18th century . And if you open an umbrella in a small room suddenly , it would break things or cause quarrel or not .therefore , opening an umbrella indoors is considered to be unlucky . And also can be found in many related to daily necessities superstitious taboo in China. For example, in Chinese is similar to an umbrella and mirrorsuperstitions. I'm afraid this is for practical reasons. There are many superstitions and digital superstition, it comes from "homophonic". Apples symbolize safety and peace in China because the Chinese word for apple , pingguo , shares the same sound as the word for safety , pingan5 . Accordingly , apples are a welcome fruit in winter, especially during Chinese New Year celebrations . Most families will have a big plate of apples on prominent display . By having apples at home , the Chinese hope to have a New Year free of troubles . Pears are not used as gifts or displays during Chinese holiday . This is because pears are called li in Chinese and this is the same sound as the word for “separation” . Therefore , it is traditionally bad luck to have pears during family celebration and holidays .3.4 the superstitious taboo of showerIn west country , friends and families throw baby showers for expectant mothers before they give birth. The idea is to give the expectant family gifts ahead of time so that they have plenty of time to send up the nursery before the baby arrives . In china ,it is unlucky to give expectant mothers baby gifts . Chinese people believe that a gift to the unborn might jinx the birth and give up the baby‟s chance for survival in its early days . In Chinese tradition , which still persists today , no one expect for the immediate family is allowed to see the baby and the mother for the first time after birth . After the first month , only friends and family very close to the mother can pay a visit . Extended families and other friends will not see the baby until he or she reaches 100 days . Not only do the Chinese differ in the timing of baby showers , they also differ in the gifts that they give . In the West , baby gifts predominantly consist of clothing , blankets , and nursery items6 . In China, although people give these types of gifts as well , they are more likely to give traditional lucky charms to the newborn .Chapter 4 Analyzing the reason for its culture differences between West and China From what has discussed, we can easily draw the conclusion that whatever the connotation, performance, there is a certain disagreement between the West and China. The reasons are listed in the following:4.1. Different Cultural BackgroundOne of the cultural different reasons between China and western is cultural background. In Spring and Autumn and Warring s periods of China emerged Confucianism, Taoism and other ideologies .As different ideologies developed and combated each other, the basic framework of Chinese civilization was established. And then Confucianism became the foundation stone of Chinese philosophy system. Confucianism's central doctrine is that of the virtue of Ren. What is Ren? Ren is translated variously as goodness, benevolence, humanity and human-heartedness. In short, Ren means affection and love. For more than 2 thousand years it has molded and shaped the civilization of China and exerted a profound influence upon almost one fourth of human race. Just as DR. Sun-Yat-S en said:” Therefore the old morals of loyalty and piety, affection, and love, faithfulness and righteousness, are superior to those of the foreign countries Let alone that peace and harmony. These high standards of morals are our national spirit. " Different from China, Christianity plays an important role in western. The English speaking countries are generally considered as Christian countries where many people believe in Christianity. Christianity is the region based on the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. He is the founder of Christianity. According to the doctrine of Christianity, the Trinity is the union of the three forms of God, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ the son of the God, and the holy book of Christianity is the Bible, which consists of the Old Testament and the New Testament. However, the power of the church cannot compare with the past time, it still influence many aspects of people 's daily life. For example, there are a few important festivals in the western is concern with Jesus Christ. Christmas day is a festival in celebration of the birth of the Jesus Christ on Dec.25.Virgin Birth refers to the birth of Christ, which Christians believe to have been caused by God rather than by ordinary sexualunion.4.2 The difference of culture , religious beliefs and customs and habitsIn the modern world, the most popular resource that effect the world culture is the western culture originating from Greece and Rome and the Chinese culture originating from the yellow and Yangtze rivers. The culture has the features of regional, nationality and excludability. So in the view of taboos, various forms are performed owing to different culture background. Similarly, some results about college student s‟ superstition are not same. What‟ more, the religion is also different. In west, the Christian is very popular which takes root in there and then it quickly dominates which has profound effect on the western culture. The Christian is holy that are not allowed to violate. In accordance with it, many taboos are relevant to it. While in china, advanced religion is not formed and feudal ethical code overweight religion. The last is customs and habits. As the old saying goes, winds are different within 100 miles. Different regions have various customs and habits. The prevailing western Christianity, took root very early in the Western civilization , and soon occupied a dominant position, has the profound influence of Western culture. Christianity is not sacrosanct, with words related to religion is also regarded as sacred. As previously mentioned, people may because one is No. 13 is Friday and stayed all day dare not go out at home. Compared with westerners, in Chinese and not developed religious culture, ethics and religion, and religious related taboo not so much.Chapter 5 ConclusionThe different local customs and habits are different in Chinese and Western culture, have formed many customs and habits closely related to superstition, sometimes the custom can be said is a superstition. For example, boatman bogey "rice", because in the local dialect "Sheng" and "Shen". This is a superstition, also a kind of taboo, also slowly become a custom. From the above analysis we can see that the difference has its deep roots, difference between different cultures are diverse, but this does not mean that the only difference between different cultures and have nothing in common, the culture of various nationalities have both individual and common characters. From the point of view of Western and Chinese superstition taboo, both also have something in common and similar trend. With the progress of the times, the superstitious has become obsolete ridiculous, people talk about, but also take them as a tradition or custom. Some superstitious people slowly dissolved into the life, people have forgotten its source, gradually become a custom, become people's yearning for a better life.Language learners shouldn‟t just learn language skills, but also learn the culture. It can overcome the cultural breakdowns and promote the intercultural communication ability. The significant influence language has on human behavior is frequently overlooked. The ability to speak and write is often taken for granted. Language is an inseparable part of culture and it is influenced and by culture. “Language without culture is unthinkable” (Kluckhohn 36). Language can never be separated from culture. It is impossible to study a language well, without learning culture. Meanwhile, it helps spread and pass down a culture. Every people have its own culture. Therefore, an English language learner does not only study English, but also learn its culture. We should do our best to cultivate cross-cultural awareness, so that we can know what to say or do and what not to say or do. However, it may take years to achieve this aim, just as the old saying Rome was not built in a day. If we keep on trying and never give up, we will succeed one day.In a word, there are many cultural differences between China and the western countries. We cannot ignore the influence of cultural differences on language. Only in this way can we use the language correctly in real life.Notes1.J.C. Catford once said, “Meaning is property of a language.”2.101 stories for foreigners to understand Chinese people China intercontinental press by Yi S.Ellis with Bryan D.Ellis p893..101 stories for foreigners to understand Chinese people China intercontinental pressby Yi S.Ellis with Bryan D.Ellis p904.同上5.101 stories for foreigners to understand Chinese people China intercontinental pressby Yi S.Ellis with Bryan D.Ellis colors and tradition p866.101 stories for foreigners to understand Chinese people China intercontinental pressby Yi S.Ellis with Bryan D.Ellis Fruity Symbolism p967.101 stories for foreigners to understand Chinese people China intercontinental pressby Yi S.Ellis with Bryan D.Ellis p96BibliographyJahoda, G. 商务英语本科毕业论文Title: The Influence of Cultural Differences on International Business NegotiationsAbstract: As global trade becomes increasingly common, international business negotiations become more frequent. However, cultural differences can have a significant impact on the negotiation process and its outcome. This paper examines the influence of cultural differences on international business negotiations and suggests strategies to bridge cultural gaps in negotiating with partners from different cultural backgrounds.Introduction: International business negotiations play a critical role in the success of multinational corporations. However, cross-cultural communication barriers can significantly affect negotiations, often leading to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and unproductive outcomes. While global trade has grown, cultural barriers remain a major challenge. This research examines the impact of cultural differences on business negotiations and how to overcome such barriers. Background: Culture shapes the way people view and act in the world. Culture encompasses factors such asvalues, beliefs, norms, and practices. The ways in which people communicate, make decisions, and negotiate differs across cultures. Therefore, negotiating with partners who come from different cultural backgrounds can be a difficult and complicated process. Results: Cultural differences can have an impact at every stage of the negotiation process, from the initial contact phase to the final agreement. Language barriers, communication styles, and differences in negotiation approaches are key factors that impact cross-cultural negotiations. Furthermore, cultural differences may cause conflict that could result in a breakdown in communication, which, in turn, may harm the business relationships among negotiators. Conclusion: Business negotiations can be highly susceptible to cultural differences, but companies can better overcome them by preparing for the culture-specific nuances that may arise during the process. Pre-negotiation virtual training, involving cultural briefings and language training, can be highly effective in bridging some of the cultural divides. As global trade continues, businesses will have to navigate increasingly multi-cultural environments and adjust to different norms and values. Negotiators must recognize that understandingcultural differences is always a critical part of conducting successful international business negotiations in the global business environment. Keywords: international business, negotiations, cultural differences, cross-cultural communication, global trade。

Of course, the international business negotiation happens every moment, everywhere. International business negotiation is one of the essential parts of the international trade. A variety of cross-culture business negotiations play a significant role in people’s life, especially in the economic life. However, different cultural backgrounds influence the progress of the negotiation. Negotiators from different cultural backgrounds have different values and thinking mode, so that they have different communication styles. It means that if you want to success in negotiation, you must know the culture of all the countries and recognize the cultural differences in the international business activities. In the cross-cultural business negotiation, negotiators should accept the other parties’culture, and try hard to make others accept themselves. It needs the help of effective communication, without prejudice to the interests of both sides to make a correct evaluation of the premise. It is very important for the success of cross-culture negotiation that in the understanding and acceptance of cultural differences, we should try to play down the cultural differences.Key words: Cultural Difference, International Business Negotiation, Influence, Cross-cultural StrategyInfluence of Cultural differences on the International Business NegotiationLiu HongweiSchool of Foreign Languages 4011201.IntroductionBusiness negotiation, as the special pattern of human communication, necessarily refers to the association of different areas, different nations and different social culture. Then the cross-culture negotiation appears. Before negotiating, negotiators must know the influence of the cultural differences. Only facing the influence energetically can make the target come true.2.Cultural differences2.1 Definition of CultureCulture is a powerful human tool for survival, but it is a fragile phenomenon. It is constantly changing and easily lost because it exists only in our minds. Our written languages, governments, buildings, and other man-made things are merely the products of culture. They are not culture in themselves. For this reason, archaeologists cannot dig up culture directly in their excavations. The broken pots and other artifacts of ancient people that they uncover are only material remains that reflect cultural patterns--they are things that were made and used through cultural knowledge and skills.2.2Causes of Cultural Differences2.2.1Regional differenceRegional difference is that people in different geographical regions have different geographical environment, level of economic development and traditional customs etc.So they have different languages, lifestyles and hobbies, and this will influence their behavior. For example, people in Europe and America value the Christmas Day, but people in some eastern countries even don’t know what Christmas Day is.2.2.2National differenceNational difference is that in the development of different nations, they have their own languages, customs and hobbies. They have their own features on diet, costume, living condition and life. For example, in China, Han people are different from the minority nationalities. They have different festivals, costume and food etc.2.2.3Political differencePolitical difference is that in different countries, there are a variety of political systems and laws which stipulate peoples’ conduct. So people from different countries have different political perspectives. For instance, Chinese like the “golden mean”, so we don’t like aggressiveness war, but some countries i n the world like to fight for scarce resources. That is because they have different political policies.2.2.4Economic differenceEconomic difference is a reflection that economic factor causes the cultural difference. Such as, in western developed countries, people are prosperous and well educated, so they emphasize the quality of life and have strong safety consciousness. But the many Third World countries’ people care more about having enough to eat and wear.2.2.5Religious differenceReligion is a historical phenomenon appearing at a certain stage of development of human society. It has its own process of happening and development. There are three religions in the world, and they are Christianity, Buddhism and Islam. People from different religions have their own Cultural orientation and discipline. It influences their Cognition, behavior norms and values.2.2.6Concept of differenceValue is peoples’ Evaluation criteria of things. It includes concept of time, concept of wealth, attitude toward life and attitude toward risk. On the same question or matter, different people in different society may come to different even opposite conclusion. Regional difference, national difference, political difference, economic difference, religious difference and concept of difference influence people on many aspects such as food, clothing, housing, holidays and rituals etc. So then they influence peoples’ diversity of behavior, value, religion and mode of thinking, and finally, they decide every countries’ or districts’ cultural differ ence.2.3 Importance of cultural difference to business negotiationIn the practice of negotiation, many negotiators usually don’t understand value or mention the important influence of cultural difference to negotiation. On foreign negotiators’ culture, many negotiators maybe have observed the other side’s “different” or “obscure” way of negotiation, but they think that’s not important. Someone blindly believes that foreign negotiations depend on facts and data, and facts and data are general. Similarly, when some negotiators go to other countries to negotiate, for keeping a harmonious relationship, they will pay attention to the cultural factors in common, and ignore the difference.3.Influence of cultural differences on the international businessnegotiationInfluence of culture on negotiation is extensive and profound. Different culture naturally divides people in various categories. This kind of religious diversity can lead to different cultural groups’ mutual estrangement. On the other hand, distinct culture is also peoples’ barrier in communication and contact. So negotiators must accept each other’s culture, and by cultural difference, reveal and understand the other side’s purpose and conduction without any mistakes, and make the other side accept you. Finally, they can reach unanimous agreement.Overall, the impact of culture on negotiations mainly reflects on the following areas: 3.1 Process of communicationInfluence of cultural difference to the process of negotiation communication firstly shows up in the language communication process of negotiation. Language is a bridge for communication in any countries, any areas and any nations. All the companies or individuals that want to hold negotiation must have the language on to this. Difference between the languages of international business activities is the most straightforward. For instance, Chinese "White elephant" brand battery will cause bad associations after it was translated to English. Because “White elephant” has two other meanings besides the name of animal, those are “things useless to owner, but maybe useful to others; useless things”.(Luo Hong, 2000:44) The way to solve the problem of language is easy. You can hire a translator or you can communicate in a common third language with each other. Although the languages used by negotiators have a high adaptability in various cultures, but no matter how it is, the difference is obvious. To Japanese, Brazilian and French cultures, Japanese businessmen’s style of communication is the politest. They often use positive commitment, recommend and guarantee, and use threats, orders and warning remarks less. In their polite talking style, the most outstanding factor is that they usually don’t use “No”, “You” or facial gaze, but often maintain a moment of silence. Brazilian businessmen’s frequency of using “No” or “You” word is higher. Their negotiating styles appear relatively extravagant, and in negotiations, they seem to be unwilling to feel lonely, periodically gaze and touch each other. French businessm en’s negotiating style appears more extravagant.Especially, their frequency of using threats, orders and warning remarks is the highest. In addition, they also frequently use interposition, facial gaze and "no" and "you" word. It is thus clear that only making certain to these differences can avoid the misunderstandings about Japanese silence, Brazilian over warmhearted and French threats, and then obtain the success of international business negotiation. (Zhao Yinde, 2002:25)Influence of cultural difference to negotiating process shows not only in language communication process, but in non-verbal communication process. Cultural difference will lead to the negotiators from different countries or regions have a vast difference in the body language, action and use of language. Even the same action language conveys opposite information. For instance, the vast majority of countries are in favor of ways to nod. But in India and Nepal, they use shaking heads to say “OK”. So they will shake head with smiling face to express affirmation. They often say “You are right. You are right.” But they are shaking their heads. That’s weird.Others cannot know their true feelings. But negotiators’ difference of body, movement, language, understanding and applies also created obstacles to communication. Cultural difference also can lead to the difference of negotiators’ communication styles. People from different cultures have their preferences and habits of communication styles. In cross-cultural negotiation, negotiators usually belong to different culture circle, and have their own communication styles. Both parties who accustomed to different communication styles need indepth communication, and then many problems appear. The way of expression may be definitely different between negotiators from countries with high cultural training and negotiators from countries with low cultural training. Negotiators from countries with high cultural training may use tactful and indirectly way to express themselves. However, negotiators from countries with low cultural training prefer to use oral expression, and they like to express themselves directly. When these two kinds of negotiators from different cultures hold a negotiation, it will always be that one party think the other party is so rude, while the other may consider that side lacking of good faith or believe that that side’s silence means approval. (Wu Xiao, 2005:11)3.2 Negotiating styleNegotiating style is the main bearing and style that negotiators perform in the negotiating act ivities. Negotiating style reflects in the negotiators’ behavior in the negotiation process and the method of controlling the negotiation process. Negotiator’s negotiating style has deep cultural imprint. Culture not only decides the negotiators’ code of ethics, but influences negotiators’ w ay of thinking and personality, so that negotiators from different culture background form distinct negotiating style. Negotiating style has direct influence on the two parties’ communication methods, communication relations, and even negotiating structures in negotiation. Negotiating style can be divided into two features following the cultural difference: oriental type of negotiating style and western type of negotiating style. Oriental type of negotiating style is based on the background of oriental culture, negotiation styles of Asian countries. Among them, Japan and South Korea are typical representatives: (Wang Hongyun, 2005:27)Japanese businessmen are conservative, value the status, think highly of credit and initial cooperation, stress the dependent relationship of each other and have skills in negotiation. Japanese focus on establishing harmonious interpersonal relationship in negotiation. If you had communication with Japanese businessmen once, it is good that recalling the past communication and friendship before holding negotiation. They don’t favor direct and pure business activities. If you establish the trade relationship with Japanese businessmen for the first time, it is significant that principal of high status in your party visit the other side’s principal of equal status. That will make Japanese company value the trade relationship with you. What should also be noted is that Japanese women’s status is low in society, and they are generally not allowed t o participate in the operation and management of large companies. In some important occasions, Japanese businessmen won’t take wives with them. Therefore, formal negotiations encountered in general should not let women in, or they may be skeptical, even showing dissatisfaction. (Song Xianzhuo, 2004:253)South Koreans are quite stubborn. In negotiations, they are often opinionated, not easily give in. In this case, you must not only grasp the strategy, insist and argue, but also be reasonable and master certain sense of proportion. Sometimes patience is needed. On the other hand, in negotiations, South Korean businessmen seldom express their perspective directly. The other side often need try to figure out what they want. In order to accurately understand the meaning of each other, South Korean businessmen may repeatedly ask the same question, in order to ensure accuracy when making decisions. Entering a contract with South Koreans once successfully does not mean that they won’t change. They will also seek to amend for other reasons, or to re-start negotiations with you.Western type of negotiating style is based on the background of western culture, negotiation styles of European and American countries. Among them, America and Britain are typical representatives.Americans always say “business is business”. That means doing business needs to persist the principle of not the person. "Time is money", "money is everything" is the American enduring creed. They are often straightforward and anxious in businessactivities. They talk business straight to the point, always a phone call to talk, to sit down without greeting, straight to the point. They calculated the number of hours and days of progress, tend to make their opponents feel the pressure. In addition, American businessmen most pay attention to economic benefits. They have a sentence of slang named: “Bang for buck”, with minimum capital investment to get the maximum benefit. British businessmen are more formal and conservative than other countries in the world in business activities. Even in today's world into the electronic information age, doing business by phone calls is hard to be accepted in Britain. British businessmen prefer to do well preparation before, and then discuss face-to-face. As long as they believe one detail has not been solved, they won’t sign the agreement, and everything must depend on the principle. The British value the position very much, and the title is also important to them. So choosing an outstanding person as agent influences the business, and the role of political forces and trade unions should not be ignored in the business. (Song Kuiyuan, 2005:79)Of course, in the actual negotiation process you must pay attention to that negotiators from the same culture may have opposite negotiation style influenced by subculture or some other reasons.3.3 Ethics and LegalChinese culture is used to avoid legally considering questions, but focuses on the consideration on the problem from the ethic. Most of the western countries are absolutely opposite. They often consider problems depending on law. In China, the concept “Ethic is supreme” has dominated an important position in peoples’ thoughts. Once there is a dispute, the first thought is how to win the public support. “A just cause en joys abundant support while an unjust cause finds little” has extremely special connotation and meaning for Chinese people. As a result, Chinese people feel not costumed solving some problems which should be solved by law. They have a habit to make “organization” and the public opinion play the role of moral standard. Japanese people don’t like to negotiate with lawyers. They think that holding negotiation with lawyers is an expression of lacking of sincerity because the other party considers the future disputes processing before negotiation. When there is adispute between the two parties, the Japanese will often choose not to resort to law, and be willing to sit down and negotiate again. While the westerners are different, they mostly deal with the dispute by law, not by the role of conscience and morality. For example, in business negotiations, especially in foreign countries, Americans will bring their own lawyers. They always say:” I'm going to consult a lawyer's opinion.”(Zhou Zhongxing, 2003:235)4.How to treat the cultural difference in international businessnegotiationRecognizing and embracing the cultural difference can take in the whole process of negotiation response measures, included the cultural difference that may occur before the negotiation, dealing with the cultural difference correctly in negotiation and follow-up to do a good job for the exchange of cultural differences after negotiation. 4.1 Cultural difference that may occur needs to be understood before negotiationIt is essential to understand the cultural difference before negotiation. Preparations for negotiation includes: negotiation background, the assessment of the situation, the facts need to be verified in negotiating process, the agenda, the best strategy options and concessions. Negotiation background consists of location, site layout, negotiation unit, number of negotiators, channels of communication and negotiation time limits. All these preparations must consider the possible cultural difference. For instance, cultural differences in terms of site layout may be slightly on the impact of co-operation. In the culture of heavier hierarchy, if the room is not arranged properly, more casually, may cause the other party anxiety and even anger. In addition, the ways of negotiating also vary from culture to culture. American culture tends to crowd together to "hammer out an agreement"; while the Japanese culture like to talk to each person individually first, and if everyone agrees, they will arrange a wider meeting. The control of negotiating time limits is also very significant. Different culture has different concept of time. For example, the concept of time is strong in NorthAmerican culture, and time is money for Americans. But in the culture of the Mid-east and Latin America, the concept of time is less, in their view, the time should be enjoyed. Thus, in international business negotiations, the concept of time differences should be prepared.4.2Dealing with the cultural difference correctly is needed in negotiation First, on the chosen and use of the negotiation language, for Western countries, we must take an export-oriented communication; do our best to express our ideas in a simple, clear and frank way. D on’t be ambiguous and vague. For instance, Americans like to argue, and their language is confrontational. They believe that argument is a right to express personal ideas, and is useful to solving problems, and differences in views would not affect relationships. While in the oriental culture, in order to save both parties’ faces, ambiguous and indirect language s are frequently used. Even if they do not agree with each other's views, it's rare to be rejected or refuted directly. They will twist and turn to state their views. "Harmony" of the values of the Chinese people creates a harmonious atmosphere as an important means of negotiations. In negotiating process, they avoid friction; put the friendship on the first consideration. What they want is permanent friendship and co-operation. (Liu Wenqi, 2004:54) Second, on the problem of negotiating way, taking an example of China and America, oriental mode of thinking is the overall orientation, and their way used in negotiation is from whole to part, from big to small, from general to specific. That means reaching a consensus on general principle first, and then guide to develop specific programs to solve problems by this. There is not obvious order in oriental mode of thinking. Usually in the end of the negotiations, all issues will be made in concessions and commitments to reach an agreement. While the Western people are influenced by mode of analyzing thinking and the most important for them is the logical relationship among things. They value specific more than overall, and they eager to start negotiations about the specific terms. As a result, they usually resolve the problems of price, delivery, warranty and service contracts and other issues respectively. Each settlement of the problems has concessions and commitments from start to finish. The final agreement is a collection of a list of little agreements.4.3 after negotiations do the follow-up job well for the exchange of cultural differenceManagement after negotiations related to the contracts management and the follow-up communication behavior. First of all, for contracts, in the countries where people value the relationship among people, such as China, the settlement of disputes usually don’t depend on the law completely, but depend on the relationship of the two parties. In these cultures, the written contract is very short. It is mainly used to describe the two parties’ own responsibilities. But in western countries, such as America, they regard the contract signing ceremony as a movement of wasting time and money, so they usually sign the contract by sending e-mail. To follow-up communication, the American culture emphasizes on "separate the people and things", so they don’t pay attention to follow-up communication. But in oriental cultural countries, such as Japan, keeping the follow-up communication with most foreign customers is seen as an important part of international business negotiation. Long after they sign the contract, they will still communicate with each other by letters, pictures, and exchange visits, etc. (Wang Tengning, 2004:46)5.ConclusionThe above analyzes the cultural differences and their influences on the international business negotiation. Any person working on the cross-cultural business activities should attach great importance to them. Cultural difference is objectively exists. Attitudes of individuals or groups determine the role of cultural differences. They can exaggerate the cultural differences, and they can also lead to lower barriers that cultural differences cause to the lowest point. When people are holding business negotiations, if they can overcome the cultural barriers, and learn to stand on the point of thinking of others, it can promote mutual understanding.
