We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt a highway.Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of p eople. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean. The Adopt-a-Highway Program is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleaning them up.We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs. Lake's room on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then we'll try to pick an area to adopt and clean.I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our roads clean!4. What is the Adopt-a-Highway Program about?A. Giving names to the highways.B. Drawing pictures of highways.C. Picking up litter along the roads.D. Putting up signs near the roads.5. What should the students do first if they want to join the program?A. Pick a spot to care for.B. Go to a meeting on Wednesday.C. Write a letter to their parents.D. Call Mrs. Lake next week.6. What is the purpose of this speech?A. To encourage students to join the program.B. To introduce the traffic system.C. To show drivers how to drive safely.D. To tell a story about adopting a highway.7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Adopt-a-PetB. Volunteers on RoadsC. Ways to Protect the EnvironmentD. Adopt-a-HighwayCUnderstanding one's own history is important for young people's learning and development. Students are often asked to write a story about crown family's history or about a special person in their family. But too rarely do students focus on the history of their own community or their own people, in a way that helps them to understand why they find themselves in a particular place. When people understand their own history, they are able to grapple with the influence of the social structures that sometimes limit the possibilities in their lives. Taking this approach opens the door for young people to be managers of their own learning and development as they understand why they find themselves where they are. Many people I have been talking to about this issue agree that not only schools but also public bodies and families have failed to educate young people about their own history. And I know from my own exp erience how difficult it was for my father to talk about his family's experience in 1944. This may be a reflection of the sadness that people feel about that history and not wanting to make it a burden on their young people. But in today's situation, those I spoke with now clearly see that as a mistake. If our society is ever going to find a way to properly deal with the influence of our own history, including what has happened to our Native American, African-American and Latino friends, our neighbors' schools must step up to help young people understand their own stories. Families and related social bodies must do the same.8. According to Paragraph 1, a good knowledge of our own history can help us____A. become good at writing storiesB. make our influence on the society strongerC. gain a good understanding of our present situationD. understand the importance of learning and development9. What does the underlined phrase “grapple with” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. determineB. recoverC. exerciseD. manage10.It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that the author's family's experience in 1944 was_____A. harmfulB. painfulC. interestingD. surprising11.The passage mainly encourages us to _______.A. write our own storiesB. understand the importance of historyC. learn our own historyD. have a proper attitude towards historyDScientists have never known for sure whether dinosaurs were warm-blooded animals, like mammals and birds, or cold-blooded, like reptiles and fish. A re cent study shows that in fact many dinosaurs might not have belonged to either category but instead have fallen somewhere in the middle.Warm-blooded animals ha ve bodies that are able to make their own heat. Their body temperatures stay about the same whether it is hot or cold outside. Cold-blooded animals can not make their own heat, so their body temperatures depend on how warm the outside temperature is. Warm-blooded animals have much more active lifestyles than cold-blooded ones. When scientists first discovered the bones of ancient dinosaurs in the 1800s, they were sure the huge creatures must have been slow. But as scientists found more bones of smaller, quicker dinosaurs, like Velociraptor, they realized that the creatures may have been much more active than they had thought.A team of biologists began to examine. They knew that warm-blooded animals grow faster than cold-blooded ones. The researcher realized that they could determine whether a dinosaur had been warm-or cold-blooded by finding its growth rate. The scientists examine the growth rings in bones from 21 different dinosaur species. The width of the growth rings showed how much the dinosaurs grew each year, much like the rings in the tree trunk do.“Our results showed that dinosaurs had growth rates th at were actually not characteristic of warm-blooded or cold-blooded animals,” said Brian Enquist, a scientist on the research team. “They didn't act like mammals or birds, nor did they act like reptiles or fish.” Instead, dinosaurs fell somewhere in between. Scientists called the middle-of-the-road creatures “mesotherms”.Being mesotherms gave dinosaurs many advantages. They were faster and stronger than reptiles that had to rely on the sun for warmth. Being somewhat cold-blooded had its benefits too. Cold-blooded animals burn energy more slowly. So they need much less food to l ive than warm-blooded animals. “It is doubtful that a lion the size of T-rex could eat enough to survive,”explains John Grady, another biologist on the research team. By being mesothermic, the dinosaurs could be both fast and big.12. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A. The advantage of cold-blooded animals.B. The disadvantages of warm-blooded animals.C. The differences between warm-and cold-blooded animals.D. The advantages of both warm-and cold-blooded animals.13. It can be inferred that mesotherms grow _______.A. as slowly as cold-blooded animalsB. as fast as warm-blooded animalsC. slower than cold-blooded animalsD. slower than warm-blooded animals14. A lion is mentioned in the last paragraph to stress that ________.A. dinosaurs moved very fastB. dinosaurs had to rely on the sun for warmthC. dinosaurs are large animalsD. dinosaurs needed less food to survive15. The text is mainly about ________.A. how dinosaurs disappearedB. the growth areas of dinosaursC. whether dinosaurs were warm or cold-blooded animalsD. the appearance and behavior of dinosaurs第二节(共5小题;毎小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

AHow would you like to have been born without any ability to feel pain? There are such people. One of them is being studied by doctors at a hospital in New York City. He is a 22-year-old clerk who really does not know the meaning of pain. But he wishes he did. Not long ago a packet of matches flared up(骤然烧起) in his hand. Luckily the burn was not serious. It caused large blisters(水泡)but still did not bother him. He said the burn felt like a fly crawling(在...上爬行) on his fingers. It has been the same story as far back as he can remember. He has never had headaches or sore(疼痛的) muscles. Bee stings, cuts and bruises(疼痛的) do not hurt.Being free from pain is not as wonderful as you may think. The young man has had to have rotted teeth pulled because he never felt toothache warnings. A sudden attack of appendicitis(阑尾炎) could be deadly. Life without pain is as risky as trying to run a cruise ship without fire alarms.1. In the final sentence, the writer uses “fire alarms” to meanA.loud noises that a person hearsB.a signal that something is wrongC.heat warningsD.the ability to smell smoke2.The selection as a whole points to the fact thatA.fire can cause serious injuriesB.life is happier without painC.teeth can be pulled painlesslyD. pain serves a useful purpose3.The young man had to have teeth pulled becauseA.he did not know his teeth were decayingB.he did not take care of his teeth properlyC.he did not like to visit the dentistD.he was born with soft teethBWhen asked to point out one or two things that are most important to themselves, many put friends ahead of homes, jobs, clothes and cars.A true friendship carries a long history of experience that determines who we are and keeps us connected. It is a treasure we should protect. Unfortunately, the better friends y ou are, the more probably you’ll have disagreements. And the result can be what you don’t want--- an end to the relationship. The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended. First, don’t let your pride get in your way. Most of us can forgive each other when differences are brought out in the open. Second, apologize when you’re wr ong ---- even if you’ve been wronged. Over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mistakes. Sometimes, it may be best if the wronged person takes the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your friend a chance to admit(承认) that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your friend’s point of view. And finally, accept that friendships change as our needs and lifestyle change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that have an effect on all relationships. My suggestion: consider friendship as an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture(培养).4. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Easy Ways to Make Friends.B. Ups and Downs in FriendshipC. How to Mend a Troubled FriendshipD. How to Take the Lead in Making Friends5. The “wronged person” underlined in the passag e refers to a person __________.A. who has been mistaken for anotherB. who has been blamed unfairlyC. who has treated friends badlyD. who has admitted his mistakes6. According to the passage, a friendship can be long only if __________.A. we have much in commonB. we know our friends’ mistakesC. We treat our disagreements wiselyD. we have known one another her desires7. What should we do if we follow the author’s second suggestion?A. Make an apology firstB. Avoid making mistakesC. Stick to our own points of viewD. Change our lifestyles.CSometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expe ct someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky( 狡猾的). Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents(天才) and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and p ractice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, although you think it is so, it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective(客观的), and to actively convince(客观的) yourself of your positivequalities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting(提升) a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍) yourself on t he back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!8. You need to build a positive self-image when you _________.A. dare to challenge yourselfB. feel it hard to change yourselfC. are not confident about yourselfD. have a high opinion of yourself9. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?A. To keep a different image of others.B. To make your life successful.C. To understand your own world.D. To change the way you think.10. What is the passage mainly about?A. How to prepare for your success.B. How to face challenges in your life.C. How to build a positive self-image.D. How to develop your good qualities.11. Who are the intended readers of the passage?A. Parents.B. Adolescents.C. Educators.D. People in general.DElectrical devices (仪器) could soon use power made by human energy. Scientists say they have developed an experimental device that produces electricity from the physical movement of a person walking. British scientist Max Donelan and other scientists in Canada and the United States developed the device. The device connects to a person's knee. As the person walks, the device captures energy each time the person slows down. To do this, the device helps with the slowing down movement of the leg. The movements of the walking person push parts of a small machine that produces electricity. Using the device, an adult walking quickly could produce thirteen watts of electricity in just a minute. Donelan says walking at that speed could produce enough power to operate a laptop computer for six m inutes. There are several possible uses for the device. Developers say it could help people whowork in areas without electricity to operate small computers. The device could also be used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers (起搏器). It could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs. The experimental version of the device weighs about one and a half kilograms, but it is too costly for most people to buy. But the researcher s hope to make a lighter, less costly version. An improved version should be ready in one year. The developers hope the device will one day help developing countries. Nearly twenty-five percent of people around the world live without electric power.A similar product was invented in 2005 by Larry Rome of the University of Pennsylvania. He created a bag carried on a person's back that also produ ces power from walking. The knee device does not produce as much electricity as the bag. But the bag requires the walker to carry a load of twenty to thirty kilograms.12. The second paragraph mainly talks about _______.A. who developed the deviceB. how the device worksC. several possible uses for the devicesD. how much electricity the device can produce13. What is the disadvantage of the experimental version of the device?A. It is too heavy for the walker to bear.B. It is too complex for people to use.C. It will slow down one's walking speed.D. It is too expensive for most people to afford.14. Compared with the device designed by Larry Rome, this new device _______.A. produces power without adding more loads to the walkerB. can produce more power in a much shorter timeC. needs to be equipped with a batteryD. can help the walker walk faster15. From the passage, we can learn that the electrical device can _______.A. help housewives operate the micro-wave ovenB. make it much easier for us to go onlineC. produce more electricity than that invented by Larry RomeD. be applied in medicine to operate heart pacemakers第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help y ou to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.Take Fuller NotesNotes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.Study the MiddleThe best time to review is soon after you've learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of th e lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.Sleep on ItStudy before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material you've just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you've fallen asleep.Combine Memory and UnderstandingThere are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables(乘法表), telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by memorizing, while ideas are best learned by understanding. The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again. 4.You can notice your mistakes by ________.A. saying things out aloudB. taking notesC. studying the middleD. sleeping on it5.When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading.A. underline important notesB. write notes in your own wordsC. take down every detailD. write as quickly as possible6.The writer advises you to ________ as it is easier for you to remember ma terial.A. study after a period of activityB. do some exercise after studyingC. study as soon as you get upD. study before going to sleep7.Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?A. Thinking about an idea in different ways.B. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.C. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.D. Going back to what first made you confused and start again.CDo you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering round the shops fill you with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me,it's something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! It's more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food, from the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason: price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called “showrooming”.Showrooming is something I've done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a lower price. I'm not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24%of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.Amy Cashman, Head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that “people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying.”She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around. But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving store discounts or free gifts. We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!8. The two questions in Paragraph 1 are raised toA. give two examplesB. introduce the topicC. compare different opinionsD. get answers from readers9. What does showrooming mean in the text?A. Free gifts will surely promote sales.C. Shops need necessary changes.D. Shops will be replaced by online shops.11. The author's attitude towards showrooming is .A. criticalB. negativeC. casualD. supportiveDMy oldest child, Emma, just returned to campus after a long holiday break to finish up her last period of college. These days, friends and family have begun flooding me with one question: What is she going to do after graduation? The job market is, after all, awfully tough. Just this month the Federal Reserve Bank published a study showing that “recent graduates are increasingly working in low-paid jobs or working part-time.” The bright spot, according to the study, is for students who majored(主修) in STEM —science, technology, engineering and mathematics —areas in which recent graduates “have tended to do relatively well”.But Emma is a student of the humanities(人文) at a small college. She’s an American Studies major with a focus on the politics and culture of food. For quite a while, I think her field of study is so fashionable right now that I’m not the least bit worried she will find a good job. Yet the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve decided to be honest. “I’m not sure what Emma is going to do,” I now say. “But she’s gotten a great education and has really found her interest. — and I know those things will serve he r well over the course of her life.”Nowadays, more and more universities and colleges are being measured by the salaries of their recent graduates. In this climate, encouraging your kid to study the humanities, seems, at best, unwise or, at worst, unconcerned with earning a living. But a college is not avocational(职业) school. And promoting STEM subjects should not be society’s only answer to helping the next generation grow in a competitive world. From the beginning, we never urged Emma to pick a college or a major with an eye on its expected return on money, as more and more families are doing. To Emma, what really matters will be something that we may not be able to measure for quite a long time: Emma’s contributionto the world and how happy she is in it.12. The author’s friends and family_________.A. are worried about Emma’s safetyB. have been worrying about the floodC. are concerned about Emma’s futureD. are worried about the job market13. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. The number of the graduates is increasing.B. STEM graduates can be better employees.C. STEM graduates are in relatively greater demand.D. More and more graduates like to do a part-time job.14. Why did Emma choose a major in the humanities?A. Because she is interested in it.B. Because her mother told her to.C. Because it is increasingly popular.D. Because she wants further education.15. According to the author, what matters most in choosing a major is that_________.A. it should be among the STEMB. it should be fashionable and interestingC. it should allow a good job and a high salaryD. it should bring achievements and happiness第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

AYou may have seen a talking parrot on a TV show, in a movie, or even in someone’s home. The parrot has learned to copy sounds that people make. Birds are not the only animals that can copy the noises they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some apes also copy sounds. Now we can add elephants to this list of copycats.Dr. Joyce Poole is a zoologist. She studies the sounds of elephants. While she was in Kenya, she would hear strange noises made by Mlaika after sunset. Mlaika was a 10-year-old African elephant.Mlaika lived near a highway. Dr. Poole says, “I could not tell the difference between Mlaik a’s call and the distant truck noise.” She and other scientists studied Mlaika’s sounds. It turned out that Mlaika was copying the sounds of the trucks driving by. Why would Mlaika copy trucks that she heard going by on the highway? Animals that are able to copy sounds may enjoy practicing new sounds. When they are kept outside of their natural environment, they may copy unusual sounds. That may be why an elephant would copy the sound of a truck.“Mlaika was not the only copycat elephant,” Dr. Poole says. Calimero is a 23-year-old male African elephant. He spent 18 years with two female Asian elephants. Asian elephants make chirping sounds (sounds made by birds) to talk with one another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Calimero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends. Dr. Poole says that elephants need to form bonds with their family and friends. She says, “They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are separated, they use sounds to keep in contact.”Parrots, dolphins, humans, and elephants show that being a copycat is one way that animals and people make new friends and keep old ones.1. The travel, the adventure, the danger, and the steady pay were all attracting young Henson. One day, he found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. With the help of the ship’s captain and other members of the crew, Henson learned mathematics, nav igation, history, geography, and many other subjects. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was well educated and had become an excellent seaman.Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experie nced men to accompany him. The shop owner knew about his young employee’s skills and experience on ocean journeys, so he introduced Peary to Henson.Using his map-reading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to be a worthy and smart seaman. Peary soon made Henson his assistant(助理), and they became close friends. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be t he first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true. Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole either time. The cold, wind, and ice were worse than either of them had ever imagined. In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship in the arctic cold had made them suffer a lot. This would be their last chance. With four Inuit(因纽特)guides, they made a mad rush straight across the ice toward the pole. Peary’s feet were injured and he had to be pul led on a dogsled. In April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in the snow.In later years, Robert Peary and Henson were greatly honored for their achievements. Originally, the Ivy League was an athletic conference made up of 8 private institutes of higher learning in northeastern United States. However, as time went on, these schools also became known for their excellence in academics besides athletics. Included in the Ivy League schools are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and Harvard University. These 8 schools have been recognized as some of thebest colleges and universities in the United States.Harvard University is a private institution located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The university includes a number of graduate and professional schools, as well as a college for undergraduates. In 2012, Harvard ranked number one in US News’ ranking of national universities again.
