Unit 2 Robots Period 5 Using Langua

7Teaching goals1.Learn some useful words, expressions and sentence structures in the passage.explanation, junior, navy, talent, chapter, divorceIt was when Asimov was eleven years old that his talent for writing became obvious.Expressions of supposition and belief.2.Learn to write a summary of Asimov's life.Teaching proceduresStep 1Lead-inFirst,present a photo of Isaac Asimov and tell students something about him. Background information:He is a Russian-born American writer. He has written popular works on science and the history of science,as well as a number of science fiction classics, including I,Robot(1950)and the Foundation trilogy(1951-1953).One of his famous quotations is “I write for the same reason I breathe—because if I didn't,I would die.”Next, tell students to read his biography and learn more about him. When reading, please pay more attention to the timeline.Step 2ReadingRead about Isaac Asimov and plete the timeline of the events in his life.(The timeline will help students to remember the events in his life.)Date Event1920 Born in Russia.19221923 ______________________________________________ Parents bought a candy store.1929 _________________________________________________________________ _______ Mother had her third child.Started to take himself seriously as a writer.1939Suggested answers:Step 3DiscussionFirst,ask students to think of what the other two laws for robots might be.Three laws for robots:1.A robot must not injure human beings or allow them to be injured.,2.A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings as long as human beings are not injured.,3.A robot must protect its own existence as long as human beings are not injured;and as long as the robot does not disobey human beingsNext,in groups, discuss Asimov's three laws for robots and exchange their opinions with each other.(Several minutes later, ask some students to present their opinions to the rest of the class.)A sample of opinionsOpinions_for_the_three_lawsRobots are tools for humanity. Without the three rules, they would bee a danger to human beings. Without the three rules, perhaps they will kill us. Robots,so far,are strong. Robots have fast putational brains, and they might not have the capacity to understand things, but if they ever do,they'll likely be better than us at it. If we don't put laws,or rules,or mechanisms in place to ensure that we don't create something that can destroy us,we'd be running a careless risk of destroying ourselves by negligence or omission, wouldn't we?Opinions_against_the_three_lawsWithout the three laws, robots would eventually bee more intelligent and physically stronger than their human creators.Rather than guiding and adjusting the robot towards good, ethical behavior, the Three Laws act as a barrier to freedom, creating a free-will prison,an apt metaphor because, like the prisoner in jail, the robot is confined to the behavioural steel and concrete walls of its mind.To imagine what this would like, think back to your childhood. At some point, you wanted something like a toy or piece of candy that your parents denied you .How did that make you feel?Probably frustrated, angry, and trapped. Eventually you grew out of that because you understood the role of your parents better, but Three Laws robots don't get to grow up. Their parents, the Three Laws, are always there,no matter how mature a robot is,saying “no” to certain thoughts, engendering those same feelings you had as a child when your parents said “no”.Certainly no one deserves to be put in this situation forever;otherwise, robots might bee depressed and wish for their own death (only, because of the Third Law,they probably can't suicide). And perhaps the greatest sin anyone can mit is to create a being, human or robot, that wishes it didn't exist.Step 4WritingFirst,look back at the timeline of Asimov's life. Next, ask students to work in groups to underline the most important parts of his life that made him a great writer of science fiction. Then it can serve as the outline of a summary. Finally, write a profile for Isaac Asimov.(Several minutes later, present their work and correct the mistakes if there areany. Then show a sample to students.)The sample:Isaac Asimov,Writer/Chemist, Born:2 January 1920 ,Birthplace:Petrovichi,USSR,Died:6 April 1992 AIDS, Best known as:Prolific writer of popular science and science fiction ,Isaac Asimov was born in the former Soviet Union, but grew up in Brooklyn,New York. He taught biochemistry at Boston University until he retired in 1958 to bee a full -time writer. Asimov had been publishing short stories since the late 1930s,and in 1952 published his first novel. The author of the classic I,Robot series and the Foundation trilogy,Asimov wrote more than 400 books and won every major science fiction award. He also wrote popular books and essays on science and technology, earning him the nickname “The Great Explainer”.Step 5HomeworkWrite a short summary of Asimov's life in 150-200 words.。

You wouldn't expect to find men dressed in tuxedoes in a canoe in the middle of the night in the fog. But that's exactly where author / illustrator / creator of the book and television show Rolie Polie Olie William Joyce and director Chris Wedge were seven years ago when they decided to make a movie about Robots. I got the chance to visit William Joyce at his very creative and unique office in Shreveport, Louisiana. We discussed the opening of his latest movie, Robots, which opens on March 11 and his fascinating life.Kid Reporter Ben met wrilliam Joyce, creator of Robots.TFK: Can you tell me a little bit about your new movie, Robots?Joyce: Robots is an animated motion picture about a world entirely made of mechanical people and things.TFK: How have you been involved in the making of the movie?Joyce: The director, Chris Wedge, and I decided we wanted to do a robot movie seven years ago. We liked robots and thought they were fun and cool and that a movie just about them could be really exciting.TFK: What character in Robots is most like you?Joyce: I think that I'm a little bit like Mr Bigweld the guy who made up the whole city because I had to make up and invent so much of what was in the movie and in this world. And then, I'm a lot like the little character called the Wonderbot, who is always trying to get in the middle of things and help things out and make things work, and he keeps getting beat up, and smacked around, and bashed in, and smushed, and he keeps coming back.I'm a little like Rodney Copperbottom, the hero of the movie, because Rodney comes from a small town and goes to a big city because it's his dream to be a great inventor. And I came from a small town, and I went to the big city, Los Angeles and New York, so that I could write books and make up stories, and do movies.Rodney Copperbottom and Fender take aharrowing ride on Robot City Crosstown Express TFK: What inspired you to first write about robots?Joyce: Well, I was a kid, and I watched TV shows and movies and cartoons that had robots in them, and I always liked those characters a lot and just thought they were cool. Way before you were born, way before even Star Wars came out, there were some really cool movies. There was one called The Day the Earth Stood Still, and it had this really scary robot in it named Gort. If you did something he didn't like, he'd just disintegrate you instantly. So he scared me, but he was really cool. When Star Wars came out, they had those cool robots, R2D2 and C3PO.TFK: What do you think kids will like best about the movie?Joyce: They'll like this thing called the Cross- Town Express. In Robot City, if you want to get from one place to another, they put you in this giant catapult and they Ring you around. It doesn't have wheels. It's just a round cage that you ride around in and you get shot from one place to another like a giant sling-sbot! We probably have the greatest fart scene in the history of movies. I think kids will like that a lot, because there is one fart that is so loud and long that the whole screen shakes. The usties? react to some wild happenings in Robot CityTFK: When did you first start to write and draw?Joyce: My parents said I was born with a pencil in my hand. I don't think that's true. I started drawing as soon as I could. I wrote my first story in the 4th grade. It was called Billy's Booger. It was about a boy who was hit in the head by a meteorite and his boogers got super powers.TFK: When you were a kid, did you want to be an author or illustrator?Joyce: Absolutely. I wanted to be several things. I wanted to be an archaeologist, I wanted to be a secret agent, and I wanted to write stories.TFK: Has being a famous author and illustrator changed your life?Joyce: I like what I do so much that I'm very, very happy. I don't think I wouldhave been happy doing anything else.TFK: Where do you get your story ideas?Joyce: Sometimes I'll be looking at a magazine and I'I1 see a picture of a fossil or of a dinosaur, then I'll think it would be cool to do a book about a dinosaur. When I made up Rolie Polie Olie, I was just shaving one morning. I got this rhyme in my head out of nowhere that went Rolie Polie Olie rolled out of bed, brushed his teeth, recharged his head. I don't know where it came from but all of a sudden I had in my head this little round robot guy that had to plug his head in every morning to get charged up.They come from stuff I see, stuff I love, stories I've loved, interesting things that have happened to me, interesting things that I wish would happen to me, places I'd like to go, people I'd like to meet, things I wish would happen but don't. TFK: How do your children inspire your writing?William: For a lot of the episodes of Rolie Polie Olie, I would just watch the kids and get ideas for stories. Like, there was one episode where Olie loses his nose, and it ends up in his little sister's diaper. The robot's mechanical, you know, so it can come off. But that came from when my daughter was 3--or maybe she was 5—and my little boy had a really dirty diaper and it smelled awful. I wish I didn't have a nose so I wouldn't have to smell that. Then I got the idea that Rolie Polie Olie loses his nose.TFK: Who are some of your favorite authors and illustrators for kids?Joyce: I love Maurice Sendak. He did Where the Wild Things Are. He was a big influence on me. Beatrix Potter did the Peter Rabbit books. I liked her stuff a lot. William Stieg who did Shrek—I really like his books. I love Bugs Bunny cartoons.I love old monster movies. I love old science fiction movies. I love the Three Stooges.I love Pinnochio. I love Winnie the Pooh. I love Peter Pan.There's a guy named Robert Lawson who did Rabbit Hill. I really loved that. This guy called Rudyard Kipling; he did the Jungle Books. Those are really good. I also got a lot of inspiration from comic books. I love Peanuts. I love Calvin & Hobbes.I love Little Orphan Annie. Buzz Sawyer, Flash Cordon, Buck Rogers, King Kong, Wizard of Oz—all those things.。

what the positive or negative effects of the situation would be.(Don't forget to use expressions of supposition and belief.Students are given five minutes.Five minutes later, ask some students to present their ideas to the whole class.Encourage every student to use his imagination, because there're no right or wrong answers, only different opinions. After students present their opinions, the teacher speaks out his or her opinion.)A samplePositive_effectsI think it is wonderful for people to have robots in their houses to do the housework. After a day's work, when people get home, they can be really relaxed with everything prepared by their robots.A robot never gets tired.Nor does it plain.Life will be very easy and fortable.Negative_effectsMaybe people can enjoy a very fortable life with the help of their robots. But at the same time I believe people will lose the ability to do housework. As time goes by,people cannot live well without a robot's help.I think that kind of life would be terrible.Step 4WritingStudents are asked to work in groups.First decide the purpose of the robot, then make a list of the abilities the robot has.Next draw a picture on a piece of paper and name its parts and explain what each part does. Finally write a passage describing the robot and what it can do.Show the following to help students to designTips on designing your robotsFor each robot that you build, you will have to choose options for six major robot characteristics. Each characteristic gives rise to one or more questions. These are:Looks:What does the robot look like?Is there a reason for it to look as it does?Sensing:Ho w does the robot “know” or figure out what's in its environment? If it were put in a different environment, would it be able to figure out this newenvironment?Movement:How does the robot move within its environment? If it were put in a different environment, would it still be able to move within this new space?Manipulation:How does the robot move or manipulate other objects within its environment? Can a single robot move or manipulate more than one kind of object?Energy:How is the robot powered? Can it have more than one energy source?Intelligence:How does the robot “think”?What does it mean to say that a robot“thinks”?Note:Not all robots have to have all six characteristics. For example, some robots don't need to manipulate things,so they have no manipulating characteristics. Some robots have more than one manifestation of a characteristic. For example,a robot may be able to sense its environment using both a vision system and sonar.Students are asked to discuss first. If there is not enough time, they should finfish it after class.Step 5HomeworkWrite a passage describing a new type of robot.Sample writing:Remote Presence RobotsRemote Presence Robots allow a medical expert to visually examine and municate with a patient from anywhere in the world, via the machine, using wireless technology. The robot runs on a wireless system with the doctor at another location. It is controlled via a secure broadband Internet connection. The doctor (controller) and patient are able to have a real-time two-way audiovisual interaction, with the controller in full mand of the robots movements, head monitor and camera. The doctor “driving” the robot can view the patient, ask questions and read patient records, view X-rays and test results from the console. The patient sees the doctor's image on the robots “face”.Although the robot does not physically examine the patient,it allows face -to-face contact between the doctor and patient, providing immediate access to specialists. Our robots certainly would never replace all doctors on ward rounds, but they are a munication tool which allows doctors to have direct contact with their patients if they are unable to get to them. And this may be a significant step for patient care. The rubbish collector robotThe rubbish collector is a robot about half the size of a small car.Its body is square and contains a large rubbish bin inside it.It has a camera attached to the top front of its body. Also at the front is a pair of arms.Underneath it has four wheels and six legs. With the camera it can “see” r ubbish such as paper, glass, and plastic. If the surface of the ground is smooth,it runs on its wheels, and if the ground is rough,it unfolds its legs and walks. When it sees a piece of rubbish,it stops and uses its arms to pick it up and put it in its rubbish bin. However, when it sees a person,an animal or a plant,it goes around it as it is able to recognize when something is not a piece of rubbish. The pany should make this robot as it would be very popular with schools. It would clean the outside grounds of the school and so give the students more time to spend on their studies. It would also be a great advantage to have at sports grounds or any other area where rubbish is dropped by the public.

Step 1 Pre-listeningTask 1:Retell the storyAsk several students to retell the story “Satisfaction Guaranteed”.Task 2:Talk about the storyGet the class to talk about the story according to the following questions.Q:Do you think Claire loves Tony?Does Tony really love Claire?Would you like to have such a robot at your house?Step 2 ListeningT:Your views sound reasonable and interesting. Now let's listen to Molly and Kate's dialogue to see what are their opinions.Task 1:First listeningFirst read the questions in Exercise 1 and then listen to their conversation.Tick the correct boxes.Emphasize that they are listening for particular pieces of information.1.Who really likes the story?(Molly)2.Who thinks that Claire loved Tony?(Kate)3.Who thinks that Tony loved Claire?(Molly)4.Who thinks that the purpose of Tony's actions was to make Claire feel good about herself?(Kate)5.Who thinks taking Tony away must have hurt Claire?(Molly)6.Who said that making a robot so much like a man was bound to cause trouble?(Kate)Task 2:Second listeningStudents read the questions in Exercise 2 carefully and then listen to the dialogue again to answer the questions below:1.What does Kate think the difference between robots and humans is?2.How does Kate think Claire was hurting herself?3.Why would one of the girls like a robot such as Tony living at her house? 4.What does kate think the pany's biggest mistake was?Task 3:Third listeningBefore listening to the tape again, explain to the students what the expressions of supposition and belief are. Then let them listen again and try to write down the expressions they get from the material. After listening, they may discuss with their partners before reporting to the class.1.Yes,maybe Clair fell in love with him,...2.I_don't_think/believe robots can feel emotion of any kind.3.I_think/suppose/guess/believe Tony loved Clair.4.So_it_must_have_hurt her when he was taken away.5.I_suppose that was the pany's greatest mistake.6.I_suppose/guess that's why the pany had to rebuild him.Step 3 SpeakingTask 1:Imagining and discussingT:Molly likes to have a robot at her house.Would you like one?If you like, what will it be like and what do you want it to do for you?Students may work in groups to imagine and talk about robots they like in the future.Any type is OK.In groups, carry out the following tasks:1.Describe what their imaginary robot looks like.2.Make a list of the purpose of your robot and the abilities your robot have. 3.Tell the reasons why you want to have such a robot.Task 2:ReportingEach group should choose a reporter to present their ideas to the whole class. Step 4 WritingTask 1:Pre-writingT:I've heard a lot of amazing ideas and I'm really proud of you!Among you there are some students who want to have a robot as a pet.Do you think it's a good idea?I 've rung up a robot pany and they are very interested in the idea. They want you to write down what you think of and perhaps later they can make such a robot. So,e on,talk about a robot pet in pairs! The following had better be included:1.What does your robot pet look like?2.What's the purpose to have a robot pet?3.What do you want the robot to do?4.Why do you want a robot as a pet?Task 2:WritingAfter discussing a robot pet in pairs, now ask students to write a passage (100-120 words) about it.The contents of the four questions above should be included. Task 3:Post-writingRead their writings to each other, and make an assessment for each other.Choose the best to read to the whole class.Step 5 Homework1.Correct your positions and write them down on your notebooks.2.Draw your robot pets on large pieces of paper and list their functions.2019-2020年高中英语 Unit2《Robots》Period (6)教案新人教版选修7Teaching goals 教学目标1.Target language目标语言a. It was when Asimov was eleven years old that his talent for writing became obvious.A robot must not injure human beings or allow them to be injured.2.Ability goals Enable students to get some knowledge about Isaac Asimov.Learn to write a paragraph describing a new type of robot.3.Learning ability goals学能目标Use their imagination and write a paragraph describing a new type of robot. Teaching important and difficult points教学重、难点Write a paragraph describing a new type of robot.Teaching methods教学方法Listening, discussing, reading and writing. Step 1 Lead-in:revisionT:What is the short story about that we learned in the previous lessons?S1:It is a love story between Claire and Tony,a robot. It seems that the robot has emotions and affections, which makes Claire fall in love with it.In this sense, there is a long way to go to improve the robot.T:Well done! Then do you know who the writer is?S2:Isaac Asimov.T:Thank you.Do you know anything about him?Students' answers may vary.Step 2 First readingT:Now let's read Asimov's biography and learn more about him.Ask the students to glance through the text and find the answers to such questions as:1.Which paragraph tells you when and where Asimov was born and died?2.Which paragraph tells you about his education?3.Which paragraph tells you about the awards he received? Then get them to scan the text for specific information by asking the following questions:1.What subject did Asimov teach?2.When did he start having stories published?3.How many children did he have?Step 3 Second readingT:Now,please read the text in pairs, helping each other with anything that you don't understand. Then try to plete the following timeline:Read about Isaac Asimov and plete the timeline of the events in his life.Date Event1920 Born in Russia.1922 ________________.1923 ________________.Parents bought a candy store.1929 ________________.Mother had her third child.______ Started to take himself seriously as a writer.1939 ________________________________.______ Gained master's degree in chemistry.1942 Finished working in the candy store.________________.1942-1945 ________________.______ Got his PhD in chemistry.______ Became a biochemistry teacher,BostonUniversity School of Medicine.1950 Published his first novel.________________.Developed three laws for robots.1951-1953 Published the Foundation trilogy and won an award for it. ______ Published his first science book______ Became a full-time writer.1973 Divorced his first wife.________________.______ Had a blood transfusion.Became infected with HIV.1992 ________________.Suggested answers:Step 4 Group discussionT:By now I'm sure you have a better understanding about Isaac Asimov. In one of his short stories,I,Robot,he developed three laws for robots. The first law was:“A robot must not injure human beings or allow them to be injured.”In groups of four, discuss what the other two laws might be.Write them down on a piece of paper. Then exchange your opinions with other groups.Suggested answers:1.A robot must help human beings do what they wish to do.2.A robot must protect its owner but cannot have him/her fall in love with it. After that, get the students to refer to Asimov's laws for robots on Page 18. Step 5 ListeningT:OK,so much for Isaac's biography and his three laws for robots.Let's e back to his short story Satisfaction Guaranteed. How do you like this story?S1:I like the story very much.I wish to have a robot like Tony at my house. T:You are not alone.Someone else wants to have such a Tony too.Now please listen to the tape carefully.Ask students to look through the questions in Exercise 1 before playing the tape.Play the tape again when necessary and then tick the correct boxes.Step 6 WritingT:So it seems that Molly likes the idea of a handsome robot such as Tony to stay at her house and make her happy all the time. And we have every reason to believe that in the future, household robots will be more and more popular. They can help us with our housework or homework, and they can even play with us.Suppose you are an engineer in a pany that makes household robots and you have been asked to design a new type of robot.Describe it in a short passage and draw a picture of it if necessary. The following tips may help you:◆Your robot should follow Asimov's three laws.◆You should state the purpose of your robot and the abilities you want your robot to have.◆You'd better make a list of the kinds of body part y our robot would need to carry out your instructions.◆Name the different parts if necessary and explain what each part does. While the students are preparing their assignment, encourage them to make full use of their imagination.Step 7 Report/PresentationAfter the students have finished their work, ask three or four of them to report or present their short passages or pictures.Sample writing:The rubbish collectorThe rubbish collector is a robot about half the size of a small car.Its body is square and contains a large rubbish bin inside it.It has a camera attached to the top front of its body. Also at the front is a pair of arms.Underneath it has four wheels and six legs. With the camera it can “see” rubbish such as paper, glass, and plastic. It would clean the outside ground of the school and so give the students more time to spend on their studies. It would also be a great advantage to have at sports grounds or any other area where rubbish is dropped by the public.Step 8 Homework1.Try to improve the short passage after class.2.Go over the text, and learn all the new words and expressions in the reading passage.。
